Nabemono is a well-established Japanese culinary tradition that has been embraced by foodies the world over.

“Nabe” refers to a large Japanese pot in which a selection of meats, fish, seafood and vegetables are cooked together in a seasoned broth to provide a wonderful communal meal. Often described as a winter specialty, a nabe hotpot stew can last for many hours as the heat beneath the pot is replenished and ingredients are added as desired.

One variation of Nabemono – Chankonabe – has become synonymous with Japan’s famous Sumo wrestlers, because the nutritional mix of ingredients boost the high protein levels the wrestlers need to gain the weight required to make them competitive.

Even today, Chankonabe remains a favourite among Sumo practitioners, from the lowly novice to the highest-ranked Yokozuna grand champion.

This winter, Up & Above Restaurant is offering a healthy version of Chankonabe.

Giving a real eneargy boost it comprises a selection of udon noodles, chicken, king crab, prawns, sea bass, mussels, clams and vegetables in a chicken and dashi broth. Wholesome and nourishing, it is the ideal winter meal to enjoy with family and friends.

The Chankonabe hotpot promotion is available daily from noon to 10pm, from January 1 to March 31, 2020.

Up & Above Restaurant is located on the 24th floor of The Okura Prestige Bangkok.

Uno Mas, the upmarket Spanish restaurant at Centara Grand at CentralWorld, goes wild for the authentic, feel-good Spanish dish – paella. Uno Mas, however, serves it in a different way, in a split “half & half” bowl that features some of the finest imported products from the Mediterranean.

On one side is Dels Pirineus which has the richness of Iberico pork, Botifarra sausages, wild mushrooms and black truffles. On the other side, it’s Lobster Socarrant, which has succulent carabineros shrimp and delicate lobster – making this one paella dish like no other in Bangkok.

Michelin and TripAdvisor, with its subsidiary TheFork, have entered into a content and licensing partnership to combine the gastronomic selection expertise of the Michelin Guide with the power of TripAdvisor’s large customer audience and TheFork’s advanced booking service.

All of the 14,000 restaurants selected by the Michelin Guide inspectors worldwide will be clearly identified with their ratings Star, Bib Gourmand and Plate distinctions on the TripAdvisor website and apps leading to significantly improved accessibility of the Michelin selection.

A website that provides foreign language translations of local menus was launched Wednesday.

According to the state-run Korea Tourism Organization, Food Trip in Korea (foodtrip.or.kr) was launched Wednesday afternoon with translations of 8,500 Korean dishes in English, Japanese and Chinese as its main feature. The service had been previously provided via the agency’s Visit Korea (visitkorea.or.kr) site.

The tourism organization plans to add a mobile page of the website, various menu designs and information on local eateries and popular Korean delicacies for foreign visitors.

Commemorating the website’s launch, the agency will hold an event from Dec.12-21, with the first 300 applicants winning a physical copy of their new foreign language menu.

Inaccurate translations on menus had long been a subject of criticism, even ridicule, among foreign visitors, with small restaurant owners often resorting to free translation services.

Among common mistakes making news were “gomtang” translated as “bear soup,” a confusion that derives from the word “gom” meaning both bear and boiling soup. Other common mistakes include “dynamic stew” (dongtae jjigae) and “six times,” (yukhoe) which the National Institute of Korean Language recommended translating to “pollack stew” and “beef tartare” in an official guide distributed in 2014.
