NokScoot, the joint-venture low-cost carrier of Thailand’s Nok Air and Singapore’s Scoot, celebrated its first flight to Shanghai when it touched down early Tuesday morning at Pudong International Airport, after departing from Don Mueang International Airport.

Passengers on flight XW858 were warmly welcomed in Bangkok upon check-in with colourful paper lanterns and a mock-up of Shanghai’s skyline, in front of which they could take photos.

NokScoot is initially operating four weekly flights from Bangkok to Shanghai, with frequency becoming daily from March 4.

The new service is part of NokScoot’s commitment to grow its footprint in China.

NokScoot uses Boeing 777-200 wide-bodied twin-aisle jets, configured with a total of 415 seats, on all flights to and from its hub at Don Muang International Airport.

The aircraft is bigger than those traditionally used by low-cost carriers and offers an unprecedented level of comfort, with 24 seats in Business Class and 391 seats in Economy, supported by great fares for its valued customers, the joint-venture airline said in a release.

NokScoot also operates regular flights to Nanjing, Qingdao, Shenyang, Tianjin and X’ian in China, Narita and Osaka in Japan, New Delhi in India, and Taipei in Taiwan.

More routes to India and Japan are likely to follow, as well as the carrier’s first flights to South Korea.

BUDGET AIRLINE Thai AirAsia is further expanding in the Vietnam market by adding a new route – Chiang Mai-Da Nang.

The move reflects its plan to continually grow in CLMV (Cambodia, Lao, Myanmar and Vietnam) markets in 2019, with a special focus on Vietnam. The expansion is expected to enable growth and reduce possible risks from dependence on any single source of travellers.

Nattinee Tawanchulee, director of commercial for Thai AirAsia, said the CLMV markets are strategically important to the airline.

Chiang Mai-Da Nang is the third Thailand-Vietnam route it has announced this year, following the Don Mueang-Can Tho and Don Mueang-Nha Trang routes.

The Chiang Mai-Da Nang flight (one daily flight) will take off on April 12, as the carrier seeks to attract Vietnamese travellers to Thailand during the Songkran holidays.

The Bangkok-Can Tho route (three flights weekly) will launch on May 2, while the Bangkok-Nha Trang route (four flights a week) will begin on May 1.

This year Thai AirAsia has set a target to serve 2.7 million passengers throughout CLMV. That is up from 2.2 million in 2018, of which CLMV accounted for 10 per cent of all passengers it served. The 2018 CLMV figure was up 12 per cent from 2017.

The Chiang Mai-Da Nang flight can now be booked at a promotional fare starting at Bt1,090 one-way from yesterday until March 10 at airasia.com and via all ticketing channels for travel from April 12 to October 26. According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, 15.4 million foreign visitors travelled to that country in 2018, up 19.9 per cent from 12.9 million in 2017, with over 12 million from Asian countries.

A total of 349,000 Thai people travelled to Vietnam last year, up 15.9 per cent from 300,000 in 2017. Vietnam was the sixth choice for Thai visitors, behind China, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia. “Our additional routes and flight frequencies to Vietnam and the entire CLMV not only create opportunities for growth, but also help reduce our dependence on any single source of travellers. The move will strengthen us in the long run,” Nattinee said.

With the three new routes to Vietnam, Thai AirAsia flies to Vietnam from Bangkok (Don Mueang) and Chiang Mai, serving five destinations on seven routes: Bangkok-Hanoi (two flights a day), Bangkok-Ho Chi Minh (three flights a day), Bangkok-Da Nang (three flights a day), Bangkok-Can Tho (three flights a week), Bangkok-Nha Trang (four flights a week), Chiang Mai-Hanoi (one flight a day), and Chiang Mai-Da Nang (one flight a day).

Thai AirAsia aims to fly 23.15 million passengers this year, up from 21.6 million last year.

It will add four new aircraft to its existing 62 planes this year, taking the fleet strength to 66.

Meanwhile, Asia Aviation (AAV), a major shareholder in Thai AirAsia, informed the Stock Exchange of Thailand yesterday on news reports of its interest to acquire Nok Air shares from the Jurangkool group.

AAV clarified that it was currently considering whether such an investment would be appropriate, but there had not been any written agreements or actions taken that were binding on the company regarding the acquisition of Nok Air’s shares.

Tanapong Chankrachang and Suda Tantiveerasut crowned champions in Thailand Action Asia 50

Thailand Action Asia 50, a qualified Skyrunning race supported by Tourism Authority of Thailand and Doi Inthanon National Park finished successfully on February 17.

After a fierce battle, the Overall Champion title is claimed by Thai elite runner, Tanapong Chankrachang in a blistering time of 07:24:55 and another Thai female runner, Suda Tantiveerasut grabbed the women’s 54km title in 09:58:15.

The 54km Overall Champion, Thailand’s Tanapong Chankrachang crossed the finish line in 07:24:55. With 3 years of trail running experience, Chankrachang mentioned that Thailand Action Asia 50 was his first trail race in Doi Inthanon: ‘‘Thailand Action Asia 50 is unique as the course is located in Doi Inthanon so it’s one of its kind. We had comparably cooler weather here today and the scenery was beautiful.

The most technician part for me was the 2nd hill. It was such an interesting course so I would come back for the race next year.”

Another local elite runner, Krist Boonpilai took the 54km Overall 2nd place in 08:17:35 and originally from New Zealand, Chiang Mai resident Ben Price grabbed the 3rd place in 08:31:02. “It was my first time joining the Thailand Action Asia 50 and I really loved the race course especially the 2 peaks. It was cool to run up to the first peak and come down then up to the second peak.

Running through the bush was quite challenging but fun. Hope the course can be extended to 100km in the next version and I would definitely come back for it,” said Price.

The Overall Women’s Champion of the 54km Suda Tantiveerasut clocked 09:58:15. Chiang Mai trail runner Tantiveerasut also came Women’s 4th place at Thailand Action Asia 50 zero edition in 2017. “It was very beautiful throughout the whole race. The course was a mix of runnable roads and technical trails so it was very fun and I really liked it. ”

Local Thai runners Patchara Buakun (10:24:15) and Supaporn Pinchai (10:56:50) grabbed the 54km Women’s 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

In the 31km category, the Men’s title went to Thailand’s Anupong Jomkun in 03:50:30 and the Women’s title was claimed by Thailand’s Chanadda Chananoi in 5:18:12. Jomkun returned to Thailand Action Asia 50 to try a different course and shared: “My favorite part of this race was the U-turn at CP2. It was windy and cooled me down. The view was really nice too. For me, the CP4 was the most challenging part as I had to climb up the hill.”

“I liked the 2nd peak with grass the most as it was very technical and stunning at the same time. I’ m sure I will join the race again,” said Chananoi.

French Hong Kong resident, Pascal Laroumanie and Thailand’s Rapeepat Khamlar grabbed the 15km Men’s and Women’s titles in 01:36:30 and 02:18:37 respectively. Laroumanie said:

“I’m used to running in Hong Kong and this was my first time doing Thailand Action Asia 50. I really enjoyed it. The mountain here was very different as it’s a lot more natural here and trails in Hong Kong usually have many stairs. The trails were also much quieter comparing to the busy trails in Hong Kong,” said Laroumanie.

Khamlar has been running on trails for 2 years and she had thoroughly enjoyed the race day and satisfied with her result. “I liked the first part of the mountain in Padang. The race course of 15km was very suitable for beginner and I would join again in a longer distance next time.’’

Ms Sarima Chindamat, director of the Tourism of Authority of Thailand, Hong Kong, was pleased to support the trail running charity event in Thailand, she said “It’s an honor to collaborate with Doi Inthanon National Park and Action Asia Events at this challenging event bringing athletes from Hong Kong to experience the beautiful scenery in this natural trail, while giving back to the local community in supporting sustainable tourism.”

Action Asia Events, the first and only trail running organization allowed to hold charity event in Doi Inthanon National Park for 2 consecutive editions. In order to encourage different types of runners to experience the breathtaking scenery of orchid and coffee plantations and Thai tribe culture in Hmong and Karen village area, three distances – 15km, 31km and 54km were offered.

Being one of the officially sanctioned Skyrunning events and UTMB qualifying races in Thailand, the longest 54km race course featured a total elevation gain of over 3,139m with over 3,125m elevation loss with the finisher receiving 2 ITRA Endurance Points. The 31km course has 1860m elevation gain & 1860m elevation loss. The shortest 15km course has 604m elevation gain & 604m elevation loss which is suitable for beginners.

This fundraising event is possible due to the generous support of supporting partners Tourism Authority of Thailand-Hong Kong, Doi Inthanon National Park, Outdoor Channel, Tri Action, International Skyrunning Federation, ITRA, UTMB Qualifier and Action X Store.

Allure retained for Chinese tourists

THAILAND was one of the top five global destinations for travellers from mainland China during the Chinese New Year holiday, according to accommodation online platform Airbnb.

Aside from Bangkok the top five destinations are including Taiwan, Osaka, Hong Kong and Queenstown.

The Chinese travel market is embracing a golden age of consumption upgrading and the rise of the experience economy, such that Thailand becomes one of the top destinations for Chinese travellers all year round, and especially during peak festive periods, the Airbnb said yesterday, citing its data.

China continues to grow in importance as a market for Thailand’s tourism and the local host community. Key travel trends include growth and diversity of local tourism. The number of arrivals made by Airbnb guests from China for travel during the break increased 100 per cent compared to last year. Bangkok is one of the top global cities with an increasing popularity of extended trips to secondary destinations such as Chon Buri, Hua Hin, Rayong, Sara Buri and Ayutthaya.

Welcoming more than 44,000 guests, Thai Airbnb hosts earned a total of Bt186 million in extra income. During this peak lunar new year travel season, the typical Airbnb host in Thailand earned more than Bt43,000 within the span of eight days.

More than 80 per cent of bookings made by independent Chinese travellers on Airbnb for the 2019 holiday were made by users born in the 1980s and 1990s. Millennials are one of the most powerful consumer demographics in the travel industry and there are more millennials in China than there are people in the United States.

Nearly 60 per cent of reservations made by Chinese guests for CNY travel are for groups of three or more travellers. Airbnb sees a rise in popularity with Chinese travellers booking Airbnb stays in Thailand. Chinese travellers can connect with locals through cooking classes and biking tours in off-the-beaten track neighbourhoods, which are amongst the most booked activities. With the Tourism Authority of Thailand anticipating an 8 per cent increase in visitor numbers this year, this allows locals to be a part of the tourism ecosystem by allowing passionate local Airbnb hosts to share their culture with Chinese travellers.

Airbnb’s head of public policy for Southeast Asia, Mich Goh, said the positive numbers highlighted the growing importance of the local Airbnb community to Thailand’s tourism economy. “Known for their welcoming hospitality, passionate Thais have become the forefront of an important type of tourism that is people-driven, local, authentic and sustainable,” said Goh. “Airbnb is focused on promoting a more healthy form of tourism that continuously empowers the local Thai host community and helps drive economic activity into communities and neighbourhoods that our hosts call home.”

“Founded in 2008, Airbnb’s mission is to create a world where people can belong through healthy travel that is local, authentic, diverse, inclusive and sustainable,” Goh said.

“Airbnb uniquely leverages technology to economically empower millions of people around the world to unlock and monetise their spaces, passions and talents to become hospitality entrepreneurs. Airbnb’s accommodation marketplace provides access to 5 million unique places to stay in more than 81,000 cities and 191 countries.”

Airbnb, the global travel platform, said Thailand is one of the top five global destinations for travellers from mainland China this Chinese New Year, described as “the world’s largest annual human migration”.

The Chinese travel market is embracing a golden age of “consumption upgrading” and the rise of the “experience economy”, such that Thailand becomes one of the top destinations for Chinese travellers all year round, and especially during peak festive periods.

Myanmar rebrands itself to woo more tourists

DESPITE the current decline in tourists coming from Europe and the Americas due to international media coverage of conflicts in Rakhine state, Myanmar remains confident it can attract foreign visitors in the months to come, according to officials and industry leaders.

The nation will promote its natural attractions and traditions to raise tourists’ interest, May Myat Mon Win, chairwoman of Myanmar Tourism Marketing (MTM), said in an exclusive interview with The Nation.

“We have a lot of unexplored attractions across the country. This does not mean that we are not yet ready [for a tourism boom]. With authenticity and commitment, everything is possible,” she said.

According to her, it is now time to take another step in the “Myanmar, be enchanted” rebranding campaign launched in late 2018. From this year onwards, Myanmar will mainly focus on tourism marketing by participating in international travel shows, maintaining its current attractions and creating new destinations.

As part of MTM’s efforts to promote Myanmar’s tourism, it will have a booth at the ITB Berlin, the world’s largest tourism trade fair to be held in Germany next month.

The presence at such an international event would pave a way for promoting Myanmar’s tourism on the international stage, said the executive.

“We are now trying to improve our image. In the meanwhile, we are also targeting new markets. So, we need to raise visitors’ awareness about Myanmar. In this respect, promotion matters,” she said.

Myanmar has adopted a “Look East” policy to attract visitors from Asia and develop its tourism sector. Yet, May Myat Mon Win insists Myanmar remains optimistic about increasing tourism visitors from the West.

“Definitely we look to the East but will also maintain the West on our radar. We are willing to grow simultaneously but need to be realistic in some cases,” she said.

Last year, Myanmar received far fewer Western visitors than in 2017. The number of European tourists dropped by 25 per cent, those from the Middle East were down 26 per cent, and Australians also declined by 19 per cent. American tourists were down 13 per cent, according to the statistics.

Yet, Myanmar enjoyed 37 per cent growth in Chinese tourists’ arrivals and 9 per cent growth from Thailand, as well as a rise in Indian visits last year compared to 2017.

“This year, we hope to receive more tourists from both Asia and the West. At this point, the most important thing is to ensure more people know about Myanmar and we are striving for that,” she said.

She stressed the importance of key destinations – Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, and Inle Lake, which she described as the “big four”. Additionally, the organisation focuses on helping build awareness of new destinations such as Hpaan, Loikaw, Chin State, Myeik Archipelago and Mogok, to name a few.

“Another move is to expand direct air links to our attractions. We are also trying for that, and hope to see more direct flights to major destinations in the months to come,” she said.

In late January, China’s Hainan Airlines launched a direct flight between Yangon and Chongqing in China, which is now running four times weekly. Earlier last month, Sichuan Airlines launched direct flights from Chongqing to Mandalay. Cambodia and Myanmar last week discussed the possibility of establishing a direct flight between the ancient cities of Bagan and Siem Reap.

May Myat Mon Win repeatedly stressed the need for a national tourism marketing strategy that aligns with international standards.

“It should be properly designed for practical approaches to raise the bar. It needs to be realistic and practical,” she said.

Thet Lwin Toh, chairman of Union of Myanmar Travel Association (UMTA), echoed her view. He also stressed the importance of ensuring sustainability in key destinations.

“We need to strike a balance between demand and capacity. This means we need to ensure all our destinations are not squeezed by over-capacity in the market,” he said.

He suggested investing in infrastructure and capacity building to unlock Myanmar’s tourism potential.

“We need to ensure our readiness before we open the doors. We should have effective strategies to lure luxury tourists in place, and this is another important area we are focused on,” he said.

He lauded the government’s reforms, including approval of visa-free travel for Japanese and Korean tourists, and issuing visa-on-arrival for Chinese visitors. UMTA has urged the tourism ministry to also allow visa-free travels for visitors from some European countries.

“The ministry is now taking it into serious consideration. Later this year, they may allow some Western countries to visit Myanmar without the need to apply for a visa,” he said.

He warned of “zero-dollar tours” by Chinese tour companies. In order to ensure sustainability of locals engaged in Myanmar’s tourism industry, the government needs to set proper mechanisms to ensure that locals benefit from every single tour.

He considers a surge in Chinese tourists as a plus for tourism development in Myanmar. And he foresees a substantial increase in Korean tourists in the coming months.

Aung Aye Han, deputy director-general at the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, agrees. “Following the visa waiver, Japan and Korea are among the most promising countries driving our tourism revenue. We are now reviewing our next steps. You are sure to see another visa waiver for more countries in Asia and the West in the first half of 2019,” he said.

The official said decentralisation of tourism permits to state and regional governments would drive more investments in the industry. He also highlighted the importance of traditional festivals and Inle Lake in attracting tourists.

“We aim to tap some traditional festivals to attract foreign visitors, particularly in the low season,” he said. “Another important move is the conservation of the Inle Lake eco-system. We take the lake’s sustainability seriously, and participate in conservation work in cooperation with environmental experts and international organisations.”

Asia Pacific welcomed 688 million visitors last year: PATA

The overall annual growth rate for international visitors into 40 Asia Pacific destinations is estimated to have been around 7.8 per cent in 2018.

According to the Executive Summary of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) ‘Asia Pacific Visitor Forecasts 2019-2023’, released on Thursday, the growth generated an inbound volume of around 688 million visitors for the year – almost 50 million more foreign arrivals than in 2017.

According to PATA, 40 destinations within Asia Pacific collectively are predicted to show an average growth rate of 5.5 per cent per annum between 2018 and 2023, to host close to 900 million foreign visitor arrivals in 2023.

PATA said Asia will continue its strong growth momentum with an expected annual average growth rate for foreign visitor arrivals of 6.2 per cent between 2018 and 2023, while the Pacific and the Americas follow with average growth rates of 4.4 per cent and 3.1 per cent per year respectively, over the same period.

Driven by its strong average annual growth rate, Asia will receive the bulk of the foreign arrivals between 2018 and 2023.

After capturing a relative share of close to 74 per cent of foreign arrivals in 2018, the proportion into Asia is expected to increase to over 76 per cent by the end of the forecast period (2023).

The impact on the Americas and the Pacific is a slight contraction in their respective relative shares from 22.4 per cent in 2018 to just under 20 per cent in 2023 for the former, and from four percent to 3.8 per cent for the latter, even as their respective numbers of foreign arrivals increase.

Asia will also be the strongest generator of foreign arrivals into Asia Pacific over the forecast period, improving its relative share of arrivals from 63.9 percentage points in 2018, to over 66 percentage points in 2023.

Intra-regional travel flows remain important for both the Americas and Asia, with the former destination region seeing over three-quarters of its foreign arrivals originating within that region in both 2018 and 2023.

Similarly, for Asia, where intra-regional travel flows will increase in relative terms, from almost 94 per cent in 2018 to over 94 per cent by 2023.
