The video has since gone viral on social media.

Official Nitichai Rungpaiboonwong and a lawyer filed the complaint on behalf of park chief Kanchit Srinoppawan at the Moo Si precinct, alleging the man endangered the animal, made noise to disturb wildlife and violated park regulations, which could lead to a maximum Bt1,000 fine, up to one month in jail or both.

Elephants and other wildlife in the national park, which spans the four provinces of Nakhon Ratchasima, Sara Buri, Nakhon Nayok and Prachin Buri, have been disturbed by the increasing number of vehicles and tourists using the park’s roads over the past decade. There have been many incidents of animals being alarmed and displaying dangerous behaviour near disruptive tourists.

Dr Nantarika Chansue from Chulalongkorn University’s Veterinary Madical Aquatic animal Research Centre (VMARC) led a veterinarian team to perform a health check-up for the turtles, which came from the same pond as the green turtle “Ormsin”, or “piggy bank”.

Ormsin became famous after surgery was performed on the animal to remove coins from its digestive system. The turtle died soon after the procedure.

Nantarika said the VMARC and the Marine and Coastal Resources Department (DMCR) veterinarian team had conducted X-rays and blood tests on the nine turtles.

“The DMCR team leader will carry on with the treatment we discussed and we will continue monitoring them,” she said.

Last month, Krabi resident Somsak Riangnguen claimed that the elephant named “Yo” was stolen from him 14 years ago, whereas shelter staff claims they purchased the animal from Tak Province.

The shelter, named “Amazing Bukit Safari”, is located in Chalong.

“We came here with the intention of bringing the elephant back to Krabi, but we found that the shelter has their own documents with an official seal, stating that Yo was purchased by them. At this stage, we are trying to ensure that their documents are legal and authentic,” said Lt-Colonel Winai Poonsawas of the Ao Nang Police.

He added that authorities in both Surin – where Somsak says the elephant is from – and Tak provinces would examine the documents before a final decision is made.

Until then, the disputed animal will remain in Phuket.

The Royal Thai Armed Forces is conducting mandatory conscription for men above the age of 21 who meet health requirements until April 12.

“I asked for a delay in conscription because I am serving the country by studying and that I think it is useless to serve the country by being recruited into the military,” he said.

Royal Thai Armed Forces’ Thailand Mine Action Centre officers, together with Thai Civilian Deminer Association personnel, placed mines and explosives retrieved from the Thai-Cambodia border area in one-metre-deep holes before detonating them during the ceremony.

The landmine clearance activities are important to prevent landmine accidents from causing accidental deaths, particularly of villagers in the border area, and to provide safe areas at border crossings to facilitate trade.
