Shark fears cancel elite surf competition in Australia

Sydney

An elite global surfing championship in west Australia was cancelled Wednesday after two shark attacks near the event, organisers said.

The world’s top male and female surfers had been taking part in the 12-day Margaret River Pro, which is part of the World Surf League Championship Tour, off Australia’s southwest coast since April 11.

The contest was briefly suspended on Monday morning after a local surfer suffered leg injuries in a shark attack off nearby Gracetown, some 260 kilometres (160 miles) south of the Western Australia state capital Perth.

A second surfer, reportedly from Denmark, suffered a gash to his leg in a second shark encounter, also near Gracetown.

“Today, the WSL has made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the Margaret River Pro, as a result of exceptional circumstances surrounding this season’s event regarding sharks and the safety of our surfers,” WSL chief Sophie Goldschmidt said in a statement.

“The WSL puts the highest premium on safety. This cannot be just talk, and it cannot be compromised.”

They said while sharks were an “occasional reality” of WSL competitions, the current circumstances were “very unusual and troubling”.

The tour’s co-leader, Brazilian Italo Ferriera, took to Instagram on Tuesday to express his fears about being in the water, writing in Portuguese that he did not feel comfortable training and competing near the attack sites.

Fellow countryman Gabriel Medina, the 2014 WSL world champion, wrote on Instagram that he too did not feel safe competing in the area.

Authorities had also issued an alert over a whale carcass off an area beach, concerned the decomposing creature could attract sharks. The carcass was removed from the area Tuesday.

The cancellation came three years after Australian surfing great Mick Fanning, who retired from the sport earlier this month, made global headlines when he fought off a shark on live TV while competing in the WSL’s J-Bay Open in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.

Fanning was not injured and that competition was cancelled after the encounter.

Experts say shark attacks are increasing as water sports become more popular and bait fish move closer to shore, but fatalities remain rare.

Jose Mourinho has warned that Manchester United still face a battle to secure a top-four place in the Premier League despite their ambition to finish second.

Manchester City wrapped up the title without kicking a ball, thanks to rock-bottom West Brom’s shock 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United were a shadow of the side that stormed back to win the Manchester derby the previous weekend, with manager Mourinho saying he would drop floundering stars for Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham.

Before that trip to Wembley comes Wednesday’s league match at Bournemouth, which takes on extra significance following the loss to the beleaguered Baggies.

United can use their game in hand to stretch their lead over third-place Liverpool to four points and all but seal Champions League qualification, which Mourinho believes is up in the air as fifth-placed Chelsea look to build on their victory against Southampton.

“We lost three points,” Mourinho said of the defeat to West Brom. “We lost three points that could give us great stability for the second position.

“Now we still have the fourth position to fight for because Chelsea won and we lost, so we still have to fight for top four.”

Mourinho’s former club are 11 points behind United with five matches to play — the same number as United have heading to Bournemouth, where the composition of the Portuguese’s starting line-up and squad will be closely watched.

Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera performed poorly against the Baggies, so may well be anxious after Mourinho’s cutting post-match remarks.

Juan Mata was another player unable to make an impact on Sunday and is looking for a response.

“Second position was not done before the game,” Mata told MUTV. “It was not done even if we won, so losing — it’s even more important the next game. We know that we have to compete until the last week.

“It has been a long season but we need to make sure we can compete until the end and keep that second position and we fight for being in another FA Cup final and try to win it.

“Plenty (to play for this season). One trophy, FA Cup final. We all know how important it is and then get second in the league, which is not the ideal position, but it is a position we want to finish now.”

Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Scott McTominay were unused substitutes in Sunday’s loss and will hope to be involved on the south coast.

Brazilian superstar Neymar said Tuesday that he won’t be back playing at least until the second half of May, when he is scheduled to have his final medical exam following foot surgery.

“There isn’t an exact date yet. I have the last exam, if I’m not mistaken, I’m not sure, on May 17,” the Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil forward told a press conference in Sao Paulo.

“I’ll be cleared to play. Then I’ll see, it depends on how things develop, it depends on my next exams…. It has not been decided,” he said.

The timing leaves the world’s most expensive footballer in a tight race to feature again for PSG with the freshly crowned French champion’s season ending on May 19 with a game against Caen.

However, his prospects for starring in Brazil’s much fancied side at the World Cup in Russia, which runs from June 14 to July 15, look much better. Brazil open their campaign on June 17 against Switzerland in Rostov.

“I hope I won’t watch the World Cup on TV,” Neymar joked, calling the tournament a “dream”.

“I will have enough time to prepare,” he said at the press conference, where he walked with crutches and his foot immobilized in a medical boot. “It’s evolving well.”

With the enforced rest period Neymar added, “I will arrive better than I was before.”

Neymar, 26, broke a bone in his right foot on February 25 in a Ligue 1 game against Marseille, before returning to his home country for surgery and rehabilitation.

Brazil’s national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar, performed surgery on March 3 and then estimated that Neymar would be out for “two-and-a-half to three months”.

In his absence, PSG were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in the last 16 in March.

Brazil will also face Costa Rica and Serbia in their group, as they target winning a sixth World Cup, four years after the nightmare of their 7-1 loss to Germany in the semi-finals on home soil in 2014.

For now, Neymar said he spends much of his time playing poker, his “favorite pastime,” and “playing video games and going on the computer”.

Not that he enjoys the couch potato experience much.

“There are doubts, of course. I feel them too. But it’s normal for a guy who ended up injured. This was the first surgery in my career,” he said. “It’s really hard seeing my team score and becoming champions without me being with them.”

“Still, I am more rested,” he said. “We have to look on the bright side.”

Thailand lose a thriller to Australia

sports April 18, 2018 07:12

By AFC

Australia needed an injury-time equaliser and a penalty shootout to finally see off a gallant Thailand, in a dramatic AFC Women’s Asian Cup semi-final won 3-1 on penalties after finishing 2-2 after 120 minutes.

After making two major errors during the match, goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold emerged as Australia’s unlikely hero, making three saves in the shootout, leaving Sam Kerr to convert the kick which took them to their third consecutive final.

Thailand, led by the magnificent Kanjana Sung-Ngeon, pushed the favourites to their limit in a performance worthy of one Asia’s top four teams, but fell just short of completing the upset of the tournament.

Matildas head coach Alen Stajcic made six charges to the side which had started against Japan four days earlier, with Sam Kerr, Emily van Egmond, Steph Cately and Lydia Williams among the regulars to be omitted.

Having breezed to a 5-0 win against the same opposition just 22 days prior, Australia were widely expected to have the measure of the Thais but the first half proved to be a much tighter contest than many expected.

Australia dominated possession and early chances, and – despite committed Thai defending – took the lead when Chaba Kaew defender Kanchanaporn Saenkhun unfortunately headed a dangerous Emily Gielnik cross into her own net in the 17th minute.

Thailand immediately equalised when Kanjana Sung-Ngeon got in behind Australia’s high defensive line before lobbing the ball in the direction of Australian goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, who made a dreadful error to fumble the ball across the goal-line.

Australia responded with a number of forays forward, but while their dominance of possession and territory continued, so too did Thailand’s counter-attacking threat.

The Southeast Asians came close to scoring again in the 41st minute when Kanjana rounded Arnold and saw her shot blocked by Laura Alleway, with Ellie Carpenter denying Taneekarm Dangda in similar fashion from the rebound.

Stajcic brought on Catley into the fray at half time, and the defender almost allowed Kanjana to double tally when her error allowed the Thai forward a shot on goal, but Arnold saved Silawan Intamee blazed the follow-up high over the crossbar.

Thailand sensationally took a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute when Thongsombut Rattikan slammed a brilliant 15-metre shot into the top corner after errors from both Arnold and Kennedy.

Australia were in a state of panic, and almost coughed up another goal when Kanjana got in behind the defence yet again to force a save from Arnold in the 68th minute, and Stajcic introduced star striker Kerr at the earliest opportunity thereafter.

The favourites ramped up the pressure; Logarzo’s scooped just above the crossbar in the 73rd minute, and fired a well-struck drive just wide six minutes later, before Kerr missed a difficult chance, then hit the crossbar with a looping header in the 84th minute.

Thailand’s task become more difficult when Wilaiporn Boothduang was sent off just three minutes from time for a second bookable offence, and Alanna Kennedy gave the Matildas a lifeline in the first minute of injury time, when she rose to head home Elise Kellond-Knight’s pin-point corner and make it 2-2.

For the second time in as many matches, the Matildas had scored in the dying moments of a match to stay in the tournament and, with a numerical advantage, entered extra-time a strong position.

Another foiled Kanjana break away had Australian hearts in mouths in the 107th minute, before a goalmouth scramble saved the Thais minutes later.

Kerr had a gilt-edged chance to win the game in the 118th minute but she poked her side-foot volley narrowly over the crossbar from just eight metres out, and the teams headed to the penalty spot to decide the match.

In a gripping shootout, Emily van Egmond’s miss gave the Thais the early advantage, before Arnold went from villain to hero with three consecutive saves, allowing Kerr to slot the decisive kick and take Australia to Friday’s final.

Buriram United successfully advanced into the next stage of the AFC Champions League after they beat Jeju United of South Korea 1-0 in their Group G last game at the Jeju World Cup Stadium on Tuesday.

The victory confirmed that the Thai League champions would follow group leader Guangzhou Evergrade into the last 16.

After a scoreless first half, Buriram broke the ice when Sasalak Haiprakhon found Korrakot Wiriyaudomsiri unmarked at the back post and passed the ball to the latter to tap the ball into an empty net.

Buriram will host the next game with the  winner of Group E on May 8 and play the away match on May 15.

US vows to make North Korea rich if it gives up nukes

Breaking News May 12, 2018 10:06

By Agence France-Presse
Washington

The United States promised Friday that it would work to rebuild North Korea’s sanctions-crippled economy if Kim Jong Un’s regime agrees to surrender its nuclear arsenal.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s vow came as senior US officials expressed growing optimism ahead of the landmark June 12 summit between Kim and President Donald Trump.

Pompeo, who held talks Pyongyang’s young leader over the weekend, even said “we have a pretty good understanding between our two countries about what the shared objectives are.”

He was speaking after talks with his South Korean opposite number Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha to coordinate Washington and Seoul’s preparations for the historic encounter.

Many observers have warned Kim’s regime will try to drive a wedge between the allies as the summit approaches, playing Seoul’s fear of war against Washington’s nuclear concerns.

But both Kang and Pompeo insisted that they agreed on the need for the “total, permanent and verifiable” denuclearization of the divided peninsula.

Trump and South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in are due to meet on May 22 at the White House for the next round of planning.

Pompeo said the United States would remain on board to help develop the North’s economy, which has been devastated by its own mismanagement and crippling international sanctions.

“If North Korea takes bold action to quickly denuclearize, the United States is prepared to work with North Korea to achieve prosperity on par with our South Korean friends,” he said.

Since an ad hoc 1953 armistice put an end to active hostilities between the North and the South, South Korea has emerged from devastation to become a leading world economy.

‘Good conversations’

But the North has remained one of the world’s most isolated states and its outdated economy has been further battered by a UN-backed “maximum pressure” campaign of sanctions.

Over the past year Kim and Trump have added a personal touch to a half-century of international enmity, swapping insults and both openly threatening devastating direct military action.

Kim’s regime also carried out missile tests that convinced US intelligence officials, including Pompeo in his former role as CIA chief, that North Korea could threaten US cities.

But South Korea’s President Moon reached out to the North, reopening direct talks, and when Kim invited Trump to a summit to discuss disarmament the mood changed.

Pompeo flew to Pyongyang for talks and to recover three released American detainees, and now a summit date has been set for June 12 in Singapore.

“We had good conversations, conversations that involve deep complex problems, challenges, strategic decisions that chairman Kim has before him,” Pompeo said.

The pair, he said, talked “about how it is he wishes to proceed and if he’s prepared, in exchange for the assurances that we’re ready to provide him, if he is prepared to fully denuclearize.

“We’ll require a robust verification program, one that we would undertake with partners around the world which would achieve that outcome,” he warned.

But he added: “I’m confident that we have a shared understanding of the outcome that the leaders want, certainly President Trump and chairman Kim, but I think President Moon as well.”

South Korea’s Kang shared in Pompeo’s optimism and was at pains to insist that there is no daylight between how Washington and Seoul are approaching the talks.

“We agreed that the summit would be an historic opportunity for resolving the North Korean nuclear issue, and securing enduring peace on the Korean peninsula,” she said.

“We reaffirmed that our goal is to achieve the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula,” she added, promising “air-tight” coordination.

– Carrot and stick –

Pompeo’s promise of an economic carrot to match the stick of “maximum pressure” may reassure observers who are concerned that Seoul and Washington’s objectives are not exactly aligned.

“There’s a danger here of the peace track moving more quickly than the denuclearization track,” warned Abraham Denmark, an Asia expert and former senior US defense official.

“If that happens, it could give North Korea an opportunity to try to drive a wedge between Seoul and Washington,” said Denmark, now at the Wilson Center think tank in the US capital.

Former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice offered three recommendations to Trump: allow experts to make the deal, don’t negotiate away the “equities” of others including Japan and South Korea, and “don’t be anxious to remove American troops from the equation.”

“If we can hold to those three principles, this might work,” Rice said at Stanford’s Hoover Institution.

So far, the North Korean regime has made vague pledges to “denuclearize” but has not spelled out what that means, when it would happen or how it would be implemented.

In North Korea’s bombastic rhetoric, “denuclearization” has, for years, been a byword for US troop withdrawals from South Korea — an idea that Kang appeared to reject.

After her talks with Pompeo, she took pains to “emphasize again that the US military presence in Korea is a matter for the ROK-US alliance first and foremost.”

Hardliners in the North are believed to see a nuclear weapon as a guarantee against outside efforts to topple the regime, but Trump insists he will not tolerate their growing arsenal.

Immigration DG denies Najib, wife on travel blacklist

Breaking News May 12, 2018 09:39

PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak and wife Rosmah Mansor have not been blacklisted from leaving the country, said the Immigration Department.

Immigration director-general Mustafar Ali said that reports claiming that the former prime minister and his wife as being blacklisted were untrue.

“Both of them are not blacklisted,” he told The Star Online on Saturday (May 12).

A news portal had reported that Najib and Rosmah were on a no-fly list, based on checks on the Immigration Department’s Travel Status Enquiry System (SSPI) using their identity card numbers.

Malaysia’s Najib to take ‘short break’ as flight rumours swirl

Breaking News May 12, 2018 09:04

By Agence France-Presse
Kuala Lumpur

Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak said Saturday he was going to take a “short break” after his shock election loss as speculation mounted the scandal-hit ex-leader was due to jet out of the country.

Journalists descended on an airport near Kuala Lumpur in the morning as reports circulated on social media that Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor were due to board a private jet and fly to Indonesia.

Najib’s long-ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition suffered a shock loss in an election to an alliance headed by Mahathir Mohamad, 92, himself a former premier who came back to take on his ex-protege, Najib.

Since his defeat, there has been speculation Najib and his wife might try to flee the country as the new government has vowed to investigate a massive financial scandal that the ex-leader has been implicated in.

In a series of early morning tweets, Najib said: “I will take a short break to spend time with my family whom I have not seen enough of in recent years.

“I pray that after this divisive period, the country will unite.

“I apologise for any shortcomings and mistakes, and I thank you, the people, for the opportunity to lead our great nation.”

He did not give further details about his plans.

Dozens of journalists descended on Subang Airport, a small airport just outside the capital, after what was believed to be a manifest circulated online showing Najib and his wife were due to board a flight to Jakarta on Saturday morning.

Police were guarding the airport.

Some media reports said the pair were on a travel blacklist and would not be allowed to leave.

But the immigration department’s director-general Mustafar Ali told AFP: “They are not blacklisted so far.”

Mahathir’s victory broke the grip on power of Najib’s Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, which had ruled Malaysia uninterrupted since independence from Britain in 1957.

Najib’s premiership was battered by allegations he oversaw the plundering of billions of dollars from sovereign wealth fund 1MDB. Najib and the fund deny any wrongdoing.

Mahathir, who is the world’s oldest elected leader, has said that the king has agreed to pardon jailed leading politician Anwar Ibrahim, paving the way for his return to politics and to potentially become premier.

Malaysia’s scandal-mired Najib on the ropes after shock loss

ASEAN+ May 12, 2018 01:00

Kuala Lumpur – Billions of missing dollars, an angry population and a powerful new prime minister who has vowed to bring justice to Malaysia do not bode well for Najib Razak, who was turfed from power by an electoral earthquake this week.

Voters came out in force to topple the scandal-plagued leader and the increasingly authoritarian regime that had led the country uninterrupted for more than six decades, handing power to an opposition alliance headed by ageing former autocrat Mahathir Mohamad.

But for the ex-premier, the result could mean more than just the end of his political career — Mahathir has vowed to launch investigations into a headline-grabbing controversy in which Najib is implicated in plundering billions of dollars from sovereign wealth fund 1MDB.

At a press conference after his shock win, Mahathir — who had previously ruled Malaysia for two decades and staged a comeback to oust his former protege Najib — vowed to “retore the rule of law”.

The fund, 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), was set up by Najib when he came into office in 2009 ostensibly to promote Malaysia’s economic development, but allegations soon surfaced that money was missing.

The scandal exploded in 2015 when reports emerged that Najib received $681 million into his personal bank accounts. A domestic investigation cleared him and concluded the money was a donation from the Saudi royal family, and he has denied any wrongdoig.

But the US State Department has alleged in civil lawsuits that $4.5 billion was looted from the fund, and used to buy everything from high-end US real estate to artworks and a luxury yacht.

After being booted out as premier and losing the protection of high office, speculation has been mounting that Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor, a hugely unpopular figure due to her reported love of costly luxury shopping trips, might flee.

But analysts and politicians played down this possibility saying Najib would likely stay in Malaysia — at least in the short term — until the dust had settled in his party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), and in any case there were unlikely to be many countries willing to accept him.

– Few options –

“He does not have lots of options,” James Chin, a Malaysia expert from the University of Tasmania, told AFP.

“The only countries that may give him political asylum will be somewhere in the Middle East.”

Charles Santiago, an MP from the Democratic Action Party, part of the new ruling alliance, said that Najib was still the head of the long-ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition and would want to hold the fort for at leat a while.

He also said fleeing was unlikely as “other countries won’t touch him because of 1MDB”.

Mahathir told reporters this week he believed the new government could get back most of the money stolen from 1MDB.”We have to increase the confidence of investors in this administration,” he said.

He has also indicated that Attorney-General Mohamed Ali Apandi, who cleared Najib over the scandal and closed down domestic investigations, was already in the cross-hairs of the new administration.

But Chin said it was unlikely anything would happen to Najib immediately with regard to 1MDB, as the new government would want to show it was following due process.

“They will have to institute a proper investigation,” he said.

Najib’s position as head of both UMNO and BN looked shaky, with rumblings of discontent growing louder as a senior member — former sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin —  publicly called for “big changes” to be made without delay.

BN strategic communications director Abdul Rahman Dahlan, who lost his parliamentary seat in the election, said he wanted “a peaceful transition”.

“But there has to be a collective decision including from the president (Najib),” he said.

As for Najib’s widely despised wife, Chin said she only had one choice.

“If she wants to be protected, she has to disappear from public view completely,” he said.//AFP

Why Singapore was chosen to host Trump-Kim summit

ASEAN+ May 12, 2018 01:00

By SUPALAK GANJANAKHUNDEE
THE NATION

SINGAPORE’S neutrality and strong security are two of the main reasons why it has been chosen as the venue for the summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on June 12.

“Singapore has a relationship with both the United States and North Korea,” the White House’s principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah was quoted as saying by The Straits Times.

“They [Singapore] can ensure both the president’s security and Kim Jong-un’s security, as well as provide neutrality,” Shah said.

“Singaporeans have been gracious up until now and also in the past,” he said. “In fact, on a historical note, the first meeting between the leaders of China and Taiwan took place in Singapore some years back.”

In 2015, the city-state played host to a historic meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and then-Taiwan president Ma Ying-jeou.

In his Twitter message, President Trump said “the highly appreciated meeting between Kim Jong-un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th. We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace,” but did not give the reasons why they chose the Southeast Asian country.

Singapore’s Foreign Ministry said it was pleased to host the meeting. “We hope this meeting will advance prospects for peace in the Korean Peninsula,” a ministry statement said.

The location for the summit has been speculated on for weeks. Many places, including Bangkok and the demilitarised zone (DMZ) on the border between North and South Korean, were mentioned as potential locations.

“The DMZ already had a historic summit. The optics a second time round would not have been so punchy. And President Trump going there would play into North Korea’s propaganda machine – that the American president is coming to us,” said Will Saetren, research associate at the Institute for China-America Studies in Washington DC.

“Singapore is a logical choice, it avoids those problems. It has diplomatic relations with North Korea and the US also has a big embassy there. And it’s a nice place, the optics will be good.”

Other experts and observers gave more reasons to explain why the country is suitable. The city-state is now holding the chairmanship of Asean. The Asean Regional Forum (ARF) is the only forum, besides the United Nations, where the US and North Korea sit together annually. Pyongyang was a member of the ARF since 2000 when Thailand chaired Asean. Asean has played a significant role in attempts to solve problems in the Korea Peninsula since then.

As the Asean chair, Singapore could take credit that it could bring the regional grouping to work out the tough security challenge in the region and the world and could make Asean sit at the core of the security architecture in the Indo-Pacific.

Geographically, Singapore is located in the Southeast Asia region connecting the Pacific and Indian oceans, known in global strategic terms as “Indo-Pacific”. Having Singapore as the location of the summit would be important symbolically for Asean centrality in the regional security arrangement.

Asean’s biggest economy, Singapore has always been a business hub and could have emerged as the favourite choice for businessman-turned-politician Trump. The Singapore could also be an inspiration for Kim if he is looking for a development model that embraces an open economy but imposes restrictions in the political arena.
