Tech gives nations athletes extra boost

Technology was at the forefront of Chinas strong presence at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, as artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies played a significant role in helping Chinese athletes in training and improving their performance.

Pongbot, an AI-enabled table tennis robot, has become a popular “coach” at the national training base for table tennis players. It can make high-quality shots at will and it never gets tired.

The robot can also adjust the speed and spin of the ball according to a player’s level of aptitude. Through big data, it is able to gather and analyze the trajectory and movement of different athletes, and furthermore simulate competitors’ movements to help their training.

“The AI robot no doubt replaces some of the work for coaches, especially when we have to take care of several tables during training,” said Chen Bin, deputy dean of China Table Tennis College and the coach for retired table tennis world champion Ding Ning.

Codeveloped by China Table Tennis College and Siasun Robot& Automation Co, Pongbot is believed by many industry insiders to be the world’s first AI ball-pitching robot.

“More importantly, it can also imitate the course of different players that human training partners usually find hard, for instance that of Japanese table tennis player Ito Mima. With this, we could offer more targeted training to our athletes,” he said.

At the Tokyo Olympics, China ranked second in the medal count with 38 gold, 32 silver and 18 bronze medals, just behind the United States. In sports including volleyball, running, swimming, rowing and weightlifting, a large number of the country’s athletes adopted high-tech training methods.

China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) highlighted the important role of technologies in driving the digitalization of key areas including sports. A guideline released by the State Council on the high-quality development of sports said that the nation will accelerate the application of smart manufacturing, big data and AI in the sports sector.

Quan Hongchan, the 14-year-old talented Chinese diver at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, said on her Weibo account that behind her gold medal was not only her own efforts, but also the three-dimensional AI training system of the national diving team.

The advanced system, developed by internet company Baidu Inc, restructures the three-dimensional body posture of divers upon standing at the springboard. This feedback will be sent back to coaches in real-time.

Fei Xiang, a senior engineer from Baidu, said that such high-tech equipment is important for sports events that have high precision requirements.

The China Academy of Aerospace Electronics Technology also helped six world swimming champions by using precision measurements during their preparations for the Tokyo Olympics.

Its waterproof measurement device only weighs 16 grams and is able to gather data within a second on a swimmer’s posture, breathing and stroke frequency, as well as turning times and other technical metrics.

Huang Haiyan, a professor of sports events and industries at Shanghai University of Sport, said: “Technology will have a multiform and in-depth impact on the country’s sports industry. Computer technology, virtual reality, somatosensory technologies, AI and big data will see explosive applications in the sports sector in the coming years.

“The use of technologies in the sports industry will help to enhance the nation’s overall competitiveness in sports,” Huang said.

Tokyo 2020+ In Review / Gen Z skateboarders take sport beyond competition

Misugu Okamoto sat in fourth place going into her third and last run as the last competitor in the final of the women’s park skateboarding event on Aug. 4. Bidding to move up and win a medal, the 15-year-old Japanese executed tricks one after another — until the last one, when she fell on the landing.

Tokyo 2020+ In Review / Gen Z skateboarders take sport beyond competition

Sobbing as she left the course, Okamoto’s competitors came up to her one by one and embraced her in a hug, then gathered to hoist her onto their shoulders. That changed her tearful face into a smile.

“It’s magic because I have a medal on my neck, but also because I was able to write history alongside my friends,” Brazil’s Pedro Barros, 26, who won a silver medal in the men’s park skateboarding, was quoted as saying. “It’s all about making the sport a better place and a better world, sharing love and respect.

“Skateboarding is a community and lifestyle that goes way beyond just a sport.”

In the Olympics, athletes and their supporters alike have a strong tendency to expect medals and settle for nothing less. This leads to “medal supremacists” for whom results are everything.

However, the world of skateboarding draws a line with traditional sports. Videos of spectacular tricks posted on social media quickly get “likes” from around the world, which some skaters value higher than good results in competitions.

Others replay the video over and over, aiming to imitate the tricks. Their smartphone becomes their coach. By making the spectacular tricks public, it allows every skater to get better.

Skater fashion also attracts attention. At the root is likely the underlying desire to have fun in the sport.

The women’s park final consisted of eight skateboarders including Okamoto. The oldest was 23, and the average age was 17. They are members of Gen Z, a generation of digital natives in their mid-teens to mid-20s who have been exposed to the Internet from the day they were born.

They want not just to compete, but to have fun and spend time with their friends. A fresh wind is blowing through the Olympics, started by a new generation in a new sport.

SL can avert 18,000 deaths by Jan. 2022 if lockdowns are imposed: WHO experts #SootinClaimon.Com

SL can avert 18,000 deaths by Jan. 2022 if lockdowns are imposed: WHO experts

The 5th Independent Expert Group Meeting, convened by WHO Sri Lanka, has said Sri Lanka will be able to avert about 18,000 deaths by Jan 2022 only if the level of stringency is immediately increased similar to May 2021, for four weeks.

SL can avert 18,000 deaths by Jan. 2022 if lockdowns are imposed: WHO experts

The experts have said that lockdowns will give authorities time to accelerate vaccination and achieve the level of protection following the second dose of vaccines, and enable the health system to recover from the overwhelming case load.

“Immediate actions are crucial and critical because it takes a few weeks before measures show a positive impact on the number of infections and hospital admissions. Any delay in implementation will lead to an increase in deaths and will require even more stringent measures with longer duration to regain control,” they said in their report handed over to the Health Ministry on Thursday.

ADVERTISEMENTx

They also recommended the government to; 1. Strictly enforce movement restrictions, including inter-district travel except for essential services. The effective implementation of these measures may require the enforcement of a curfew for a short period, in large geographic areas or nationally.

2. Restrict /cancel all public events for 3 weeks.

3. Provide care and protect the health workers and augment staffing in hospitals to minimize disruption of essential health services.

4. Develop and implement an effective communication plan to engage the public and to update them on the control measures.

5. Accurate reporting of both cases and deaths to get a better picture of the ground situation. May also use proxy indicators such as observed Test Positivity Rate (TPR), trends measured using weekly moving averages and time series analysis, mobility data, etc.

6. Prioritize vaccinating all those over 60 years old and those with comorbidities, preferably with Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca because even a single dose of these vaccines provides some degree of protection until the second dose is given.

Below are excerpts of the recommendations of the Expert Group: “The Experts noted with great concern the current surge in COVID-19, nearly overwhelming the capacity of the health systems to provide the required adequate care for the people. The trends given below indicate that Sri Lanka could soon face a health crisis of unprecedented proportions.

“Sri Lanka is showing a rapid increase in daily reported number of cases and deaths (111 deaths reported on 09 August 2021 representing a doubling of deaths in a short space of time).

” Bed occupancy rates at all levels of care facilities (over 85%) and ICU’s (over 90%) have increased progressively and is now in full capacity. Patients dependent on oxygen have significantly increased from 528 last week to 646 patients yesterday. If this trend continues, there is an inevitability of a serious shortage of oxygen supply and interruption of care.

“Many areas of the country show a high PCR test positivity rate of over 20%.

“As of 31 July 2021, more than 60% of sequenced samples are Delta variant, which is highly transmissible with a shorter incubation period. It is now the dominant variant in Western Province and will soon spread to other areas. Delta variant spreads rapidly as has been shown in several countries. The crisis will be magnified once Delta variant has spread countrywide because most of the other provinces are not as well vaccinated as the Western province.

” For the vaccine that is used most widely, community vaccination will take 2-3 weeks after the second dose to provide adequate protection from severe disease and death. As of 09 August, less than 15% of the population is fully vaccinated. The newly vaccinated, single-dose vaccinated or unvaccinated groups are at very high risk of severe illness and it is very likely that there will be further increase of cases and deaths, particularly in densely populated areas.

“Significant number of health workers are getting infected with a consequent pressure for curtailment and closure of services. All indications are that the “Amidst this situation, there is sustained high level of mobility and social mixing among population despite the nationwide restrictions (Oxford ‘Stringency Index’ was 85% (i.e. very effective restrictions in movement) in May, 49% in July and 29% by this week (i.e. dangerously low levels of movement restrictions).

The figure given in the Appendix and linked pdf shows a very clear inverse relationship between Sri Lanka’s stringency index value (black line) and the number of cases and deaths brown areas.”

[Myanmar] CBM denies the rumours of abolishing bank notes and the closure of banks

The rumours of Ks10,000 and Ks5,000 bank notes would be revoked and the banks would be closed, are not true and banks have been instructed to provide regular banking services, according to Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM).

The rumours of abolishing Ks5,000 and Ks10,000 and the closure of the banks are came out and some people are worried about the rumors and withdrew their money, announced the CBM on August 13.

The public can continue to use money with confidence without worrying about money and banking operations, and the banks have been instructed to provide regular banking services, it said.

“The closure of three banks is just a rumour. It is trying to disrupt the stability of the country’s economy and the banks’ ability to operate in accordance with the rules and regulations, and is adding to the plight of the people, who are suffering from epidemics, deaths and distress. At present, the central bank does not take any action or try to close any banks,” said Win Thaw, Vice Governor of the CBM.

The CBM is focusing on stabilizing the financial system. Banks are providing services in accordance with the regulations, the statement said.

The Ministry of Information has announced banks, offices and schools will be closed from August 16 to 22 to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

According to the Transferable Contracts Act, all banks will be closed from August 16 to 20, 2021, as these are public holidays, according to the CBM.

“Banks have not been included in the ongoing government holidays. All offices are closed except for the CBM and banks that the required medicines and medical equipment can be imported easily and people can do what they need to do in the wake of the economic downturn while suffering from the effects of the COVID-19. It’s been three weeks now. As a result, the spread of the disease has been steadily declining. However, as the central bank and banks did not close, their staffs are infected. For this reason, the banks will be closed on public holidays this time. The reason not close the banks, is not to interrupt the commodity flow and to make it easy to import necessary items. Now, the government has allowed banks, including the central bank, to close for this week,” he said.

WHO trial to study potential of 3 anti-malarial drugs against Covid

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced a clinical trial to study three antimalarial and anti-inflammatory drugs as potential treatments for patients with Covid.

The drugs — artesunate, imatinib and infliximab — were selected by an independent expert panel for their potential in reducing the risk of death in hospitalised Covid-19 patients, the WHO said in a statement.

The drugs are already in use for other conditions: artesunate is used for severe malaria, imatinib for certain cancers, and infliximab for diseases of the immune system such as Crohn’s Disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

“Finding more effective and accessible therapeutics for Covid-19 patients remains a critical need, and WHO is proud to lead this global effort,” WHO Director General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said in the statement.

“I would like to thank the participating governments, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, clinicians and patients, who have come together to do this in true global solidarity,” he added.

The trial involves thousands of researchers in over 600 hospitals in 52 countries. Artesunate will be administered to Covid-19 patients intravenously for seven days, imatinib will be given once daily for 14 days, and infliximab will be injected in one single dose.

The drugs’ manufacturers, Ipca (artesunate), Novartis (imatinib) and Johnson & Johnson (infliximab) donated supplies to the trial, the WHO said.

None of the drugs are currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in coronavirus patients.

A WHO-led trial, last year, evaluated four drugs — remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir and interferon. The results showed that the drugs had little or no effect on hospitalised patients with Covid-19.

Meeting in Washington shores up ties #SootinClaimon.Com

Meeting in Washington shores up ties

Envoy vows to work for constructive relationship between China and US

In the latest meeting with key United States diplomats, Beijing’s new top envoy in Washington Qin Gang said the ties are “at a new crossroads”, and he used the words “rational, stable, manageable and constructive” to outline the expected China-US ties he is working toward.

His meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman on Thursday was a testament to Beijing’s hope that the two sides can jointly steer the relationship away from further worsening, experts said.

It is also “a critical chance for communication on China-US ties” that projects a strong readiness from both sides to deepen their understanding of one another, experts added.

Beijing and Washington have seen tensions rise between them over the past few months on a series of topics such as Taiwan, COVID-19 origin tracing and human rights.

At the meeting, both sides traded goodwill sentiments, as Sherman told Qin that the State Department will provide convenience and support for the performance of his duties in the US, and Qin thanked the US side for providing support and assistance.

Qin said he will follow the spirit of the telephone conversation between President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden on the eve of Chinese New Year, and enhance communication and dialogue with the US side.

The two sides “exchanged views on issues of mutual interest and agreed to maintain close dialogue and communication”, according to the Chinese embassy.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Qin said, “Both sides agreed that China-US relations are very important and it is necessary for the two sides to manage differences and disagreements, resolve issues through dialogue and communication and work together to improve bilateral relations.”

US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said Sherman “expressed the United States’ commitment to continuing discussions”.

Su Xiaohui, deputy director of the Department of American Studies at the China Institute of International Studies, said Qin’s comments on controlling divergence are “good news for the ties”.

The “rational, stable, manageable and constructive” ties Qin has vowed to work for sent a signal that “China expects the relationship to stabilize before moving on to the next phase of talks on cooperation at a higher level”, Su said.

“Beijing has no illusion on the ties, as Washington has yet to take major steps in terms of damage control on the negative impact the US has had on the ties since (the beginning of) Donald Trump administration,” Su added.

Prior to Qin’s arrival, Sherman visited Tianjin on July 25-26 for talks with Vice-Foreign Minister Xie Feng. She also met State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The Thursday meeting is one more step forward to bolster mutual understanding, and “the worst thing for both sides is misjudgment rather than differences”, Su said.

During Sherman’s China trip, Beijing singled out three areas-China’s political system, development and sovereignty-as no-go-zones that the US must not enter.

At Thursday’s meeting, Qin clearly stated China’s position on the Taiwan question. He told reporters that the Taiwan question is “the most important and sensitive issue” in China-US ties.

Su, the CIIS scholar, said “the US is expected to take heed of the warning issued by China”.

“If the US further miscalculates and challenges the one-China bottom line of the Taiwan question in an incremental approach like slicing a sausage, it will certainly lead to an uncontrollable end result,” Su said.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Friday that China strongly opposes the US’ finger-pointing and gross interference in China’s legitimate actions, after the State Department asserted earlier this week that “each country should be able to determine the contours of its own ‘one-China’ policy without outside coercion”.

Qin arrived in Washington and started self-quarantine exactly two weeks ahead of his first meeting as ambassador with Sherman on Thursday.

Diao Daming, an associate professor of US studies at the School of International Studies of Renmin University of China, said the arrangement of Qin’s schedule reflects his great sense of duty and “Washington’s willingness to embark on communication with Beijing as soon as possible to bolster dialogue”.

Diao endorsed Qin’s public diplomacy in the first two weeks, as the envoy sent a series of tweets covering a wide range of areas, such as his congratulations to TeamUSA for winning the most medals at the recent Tokyo Olympics.

“This shows that Qin is ready to make the gate for China-US ties open even wider by tapping into more collaboration and dialogue to keep the ties’ growth afloat,” Diao added.

Japan logs over 20,000 new virus cases for 1st time

The nation reached a new and disturbing milestone on Friday by recording over 20,000 new cases of coronavirus infections for the first time, according to a Yomiuri Shimbun tally.

Atotal of 20,240 new cases were confirmed across the country, with record daily highs logged in more than 10 prefectures, including Tokyo (5,773), Kanagawa (2,281), Saitama (1,696), Chiba (1,089) and Kyoto (450).

The nationwide number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients also reached a record high, with 1,478 as of midnight Thursday night.

Samsung’s Lee Jae-yong walks free on parole #SootinClaimon.Com

Samsung’s Lee Jae-yong walks free on parole

De facto leader of Samsung still subject to parole conditions

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong walked free from prison Friday after he was granted parole, about 11 months before scheduled release.

The de facto leader of Samsung Group walked out of the Seoul Detention Center in a southern suburb of Seoul at 10 a.m. Friday. He is one of 810 prisoners scheduled for release Friday as part of South Korea’s annual tradition of clemency for Liberation Day, which falls on Sunday.

“I apologize for causing this much concern to fellow citizens,” Lee told reporters upon exiting the correctional facility. “I am well aware of concerns, criticism, worries and big hopes on me. I will live up to them.”

The Ministry of Justice said it decided to grant parole to Lee after taking into consideration the current conditions in the global business environment.

Justice Minister Park Beom-kye said he also endorsed Lee’s release based on public sentiment and his conduct in prison. Lee had spent 18 months of his 30-month sentence in prison, meeting the Justice Ministry’s minimum requirement of having served 60 percent of an inmate’s total jail term to be eligible for parole.

He was put behind bars in January after the Seoul High Court sentenced him to 2 1/2 years in prison for paying 8.68 billion won ($7.43 million) in bribes to former President Park Geun-hye. He had already spent almost a year behind bars when the ruling was made.

Releasing Lee on parole or granting him a special pardon has been a highly contested topic.

His release was believed to be aimed at vitalizing the struggling economy, as Samsung Group, without its leader at the helm, appeared to have slowed down on making decisions on business initiatives.

The Samsung heir is required to abide by parole conditions, which means he has to report to the parole office in advance if he plans to move residences or leave the country for more than a month. Lee is not qualified for exemptions of these conditions.

Yet Lee faces hurdles in returning to his role at Samsung Electronics, as he is bound by a five-year employment ban. An order based on the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes prohibits those convicted of embezzling more than 500 million won from being employed by any entities that were linked to the crime.

Lee lost his board seat at Samsung Electronics in 2019 and will have to apply for an exemption with the Ministry of Justice to lift the restriction. But the Justice Ministry had said prior to Lee’s release that it has no plans in doing so.

Trains to arrive next month for trial run of Laos-China railway

The Laos-China railway project will bring in locomotives, electric multiple unit (EMU) trains and other equipment to conduct the first trial run of the railway in October.

The plan was presented at the 10th Laos-China Railway Project Steering Committee Meeting held in Vientiane on Wednesday, attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning and Investment Dr Sonexay Siphandone.

Officials in charge of the project said the project management committee is drafting a memorandum relating to the opening of temporary railway checkpoints so that locomotives, EMU trains and other equipment can be brought into Laos in September in preparation for the trial run.

As of July 25, construction of the Laos-China railway from the Boten border crossing in northern Laos, bordering China, to Thanalaeng in Vientiane was 93.82 percent complete.

It is expected that the railway will be finished according to plan and will open for public use on December 2.

From July 26-30, a technical team from the Department of Railways, Project Management Committee, Border Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Laos-China Railway Company carried out an inspection and on August 16 will inspect the Chinese side of the railway to determine the connection points to be completed this month.

The inspection committee will carry out further checks from October 21 to November 19, involving committee members, all technical staff under the steering committee, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. The areas through which the railway runs will be inspected, while other groups will conduct readiness checks before the opening of the railway on December 2.

A Railway Law was promulgated in 2019 and a decree on the authority of the railway signed on July 16, 2021. The decree is derived from the Railway Regulation Act, which covers railway police and railway inspectors.

The Department of Railways and the Department of Railway Police have drawn up a draft agreement on the movements of authorities inspecting the railway and railway police, which is expected to be promulgated in September. The agreement will ensure security on trains and at railway stations.

The railway, which connects Vientiane to the Chinese border, traverses the provinces of Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Oudomxay and Luang Namtha and passes through 75 tunnels with a combined length of 197.83km.

Construction of the US$5.986 billion (37.4 billion yuan) railway began in December 2016.

The Laos-China railway is a strategic part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative and the Lao government’s plan to transform Laos from a landlocked country into a land link within the region.

Vietnam strives to have homegrown vaccines next month

HÀ NỘI — Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has asked for more efforts, determination and effective coordination among ministries, agencies and individuals to be able to have the first made-in-Việt Nam COVID-19 vaccines ready next month.

He spoke at a meeting held with scientists, units and businesses involving in COVID-19 vaccine research and production yesterday to seek solutions and promote vaccine production.

The Government has put special attention on promoting the production of vaccines as soon and as much as possible to vaccinate people amid the global shortage and complicated development of the pandemic.

The Prime Minister has had five meetings to discuss the research, technology transfer and production of homemade vaccines during a short period of time and visited vaccine research and production facilities in Hà Nội and HCM City, which demonstrated the Government’s special attention to this task.

In order to have COVID-19 vaccines, it was necessary to comprehensively implement the import of vaccines, transfer of vaccine production technology and research and production of homegrown vaccines, he said. Of which, the research, technology transfer and production of homemade vaccines played an important role.

He asked participants to make clear difficulties in vaccine research and production in order to work together to find solutions.

All sides needed to coordinate closely and proactively implement assigned tasks with full responsibilities, he said.

At the meeting, the Ministry of Health and related agencies reported the situation and progress of vaccine production technology transfer, research, clinical trials and production of homegrown COVID-19 vaccines, including the research, production and clinical trials of the Nano Covax vaccine which is produced by Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology JSC based on recombinant DNA/protein technology; the Covivac vaccine which has been researched and produced by the Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals under the Ministry of Health; and ARCT-154 vaccine which was purchased with technology transferred to VinBioCare Biotechnology JSC, a unit of Việt Nam’s leading multisectoral conglomerate Vingroup, from Arcturus Therapeutics Holding Incorporation, USA.

Lieutenant-General Đỗ Quyết, Director of the Military Medical University, which joined the research and clinical trials of the Nano Covax vaccine, said the determination of the Government and the Prime Minister encouraged scientists and research and production agencies and affirmed they would strictly abide by professional and scientific regulations and processes and ensure objectiveness and honesty in vaccine research and judgement of human trials of vaccines.

Chairman of the Advisory Council for the Registration of Circulation of Drugs and Medicinal Ingredients Lê Văn Truyền said the council will implement assessments as soon as possible to submit to the Ministry of Health for granting circulation certificates for the vaccines in line with regulations after the ministry’s Ethical Evaluation Committee in Biomedical Research evaluated the vaccines following the results of trials.

Deputy Prime Minister Vũ Đức Đam said it was essential to speed up the research and production of homegrown vaccines to soon get a licence for emergency use as more vaccines are needed to inoculate as many people as possible at this time.

After October, more vaccines will arrive in Việt Nam in a large quantity with 60 million doses of vaccines scheduled for the fourth quarter. Projects receiving vaccine production technology transfer from foreign partners have started to be implemented. Homegrown vaccines will soon complete human trials.

PM Chính urged scientists, management staff and producers to speed up the progress and simplify administrative procedures but ensure tightened professional and scientific factors in the spirit of speed, safety and efficacy as this task is related to the health and live of people. VNS
