The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) is planning a five-year venue development model scheme (2019-2023) with the intention of promoting the Kingdom as Asia’s MICE business hub that meets international standards, as well as the centre for MICE education within Asean.

Following its overwhelming success to date, the TCEB has set its sights on making more than 1,200 industry-standard rooms available by 2023, and featuring the largest number of MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) venues in Asean.

Additionally, Thailand Sustainable Event Management Standards, or TSEMS, will be launched next year in response to the world’s trend towards business operations with social and environmental concerns, TCEB president Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya announced on Monday.

He also described Thailand MICE Venue Standards, or TMVS, as one of the key projects aiming to leverage the capabilities of Thailand’s MICE industry to grow on a par with its international competitors with genuine competitiveness, in accordance with the government’s policy to feature MICE as one of the businesses that generates major income for the country.

“Standardisation is a key element of trustworthiness and is a tool to assure the country’s readiness. It reflects the professionalism of Thailand’s MICE venue operators in regard to attracting events, as well as domestic and international organisers to choose industry-standard venues.

“Launched in 2014, the project has been warmly welcomed by venue operators. Thailand is the first in Asean to initiate MICE venue standard certification, and push forward as Asean MICE Venue Standards, or AMVS,” Chiruit explained.

Achievements of the project have fulfilled the previous five-year venue development model scheme (2015-2019), which comprises six key strategies: the development of a Thailand MICE Venue Standard to conform to international standards; the development of personnel capabilities; the development of IT systems; public relations and marketing support; promotion of a venue standard among Asean countries; and enforcement of a MICE venue standard towards sustainability.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index closed last year at 1,563.88 points, down 10.8 per cent from 12 months earlier, while the average daily trading value of the SET and the Market for Alternative Investment surged 15.1 per cent to Bt57.67 billion during the course of the year.

SET senior executive vice president Soraphol Tulayasathien said on Monday that the SET Index in 2018 had been weighed down by external factors, while Thailand’s economic fundamentals remained robust and economic growth had outpaced the level achieved in the previous year.

Foreign investors’ selling spree in Thai shares was in tandem with most Asian stock markets, he said.

The Thai bourse’s average daily trading value in 2018 rose from the preceding year, with a year-on-year increase in the first three quarters before dropping in the fourth quarter, in line with most Asean markets as investors became more cautious on global capital-market investment amid global trade disputes, Soraphol explained.

Recycling gets the nod under ‘circular economy’ projects

The Nation

As Asian countries face a future of evermore waste being generated, they are considering a shift to the “circular economy” to drive sustainable growth for their nation.

Support for a shift to a circular economy has been growing since the World Economic Forum (WEF) undertook a multi-year collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation under the Project Mainstream to accelerate a transition.

Project Mainstream is a CEO-led initiative that helps to scale business innovations related to the circular economy.

The idea behind the circular economy is to reuse and recycle resources multiple times to keep them in use for as long as possible and minimise waste.

Building on the work of the WEF and the MacArthur Foundation, the Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy – PACE was launched in 2017 as a public-private collaboration.

It is co-chaired by the CEO of Philips and the heads of the Global Environment Facility and UN Environment, along with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the International Resource Panel, Circle Economy and Accenture Strategy as knowledge partners.

The World Economic Forum hosts and facilitates the Platform.

The Global Leadership Group currently includes over 40 CEOs, ministers and heads of international organisations committed to leading a portfolio of projects and activities. Project focus areas include plastics, electronics, food and bio-economy, the business model, and market transformation across China, Asean, Europe and Africa.

Following the trend across Asia, businesses are increasingly discarding the decades-old “take, make, waste” model in favour of the circular economy in which waste is minimised and products are kept in the market in one virtuous loop.

The approach has the potential to spur a new industrial revolution, EcoBusiness Magazine reported recently.

For example, in Taiwan, used coffee grounds collected from Starbucks cafes are turned into T-shirts, socks and soaps by Taiwanese firm Singtex. Lighting giant Philips gives office landlords in Singapore free lights in return for a share of the energy saved. In the Philippines, discarded fishing nets are sold by local communities to carpetmaker Interface to make fresh carpet tiles.

All over the world, including in Asia, home-sharing platforms Airbnb and PandaBed, along with car-sharing services Lyft and Tripda, and goods-sharing apps SnapGoods and Rent Tycoon are fuelling collaborative consumption and changing the way people use goods.

In Thailand, Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Ltd (MQDC) has collaboration with PTT Global Chemical Plc (GC) to develop upcycled building materials from plastic waste. The materials were used in the construction of MQDC’s residential projects starting last year.

The first project features construction of a 5-kilometre network of footpaths that will take at least 160 tonnes of plastic waste. The plastic is being provided by GC, which collects it from the sea. Later, the company’s Research & Innovation for Sustainability Centre will carry out research and development into the use of other such materials in infrastructure at its projects.

The World Economic Forum estimates that 80 per cent of the US$3.2 trillion (Bt103 trillion) value of the global consumer goods sector is lost irrecoverably each year due to the current inefficient linear “make, take, waste” model.

Rebound seen amid global bearishness

Investors are bearish on the outlook for the world economy as reflected in the falling global bond yield from the mass exit from equities to safe-haven assets.

Last week, the market-implied US policy rates suggested that investors were expecting the Federal Reserve System (Fed) to hold their rates this year and possibly a cut in early 2020.

At its December 2018 meeting, the US Federal Open Market Committee’s dot plot showed a median of 2 rate hikes this year, followed by another one in 2020. The huge gap between the market and central bank’s expectations needs to be narrowed.

During this period, the market will certainly be volatile. Nonetheless, given the over-bearishness, we expect a sharp rebound.

But a more sustainable recovery hinges on two major factors: if the Fed turns more dovish and if the ChinaUS trade talks are successful.

Selective plays on key stocks remain our key recommendation. Real estate investment trusts should benefit from peaking interest rates. – Thanawat Patchimkul, Head of Research, DBS Vickers Securities (Thailand)

Poll a key factor

The Thai stock market has moved with high volatility for the past two weeks, sinking to a low of 1,546 points amid concerns over the possibility of a global recession. However, the Thai bourse rose on the last trading day of 2018, driven by the buying spree from LTFsRMFs.

Last week, the Thai Stock Exchange was off to a bumpy start this year, beset by negative news such as postponement of the Thai national election, the US government shutdown and weakening global purchase managers’ index.

The SET Index is not expected to rebound in January despite likely progress in US-China trade talks. An uptrend in the SET Index may occur when a clearer picture emerges on the election. We estimate the support line at 1,540 points and the resistance line at 1,585 points.

This week’s investment strategy: We see limited downside risks as seen in previous sharp drops. The SET Index is technically targeted at 1,600 points in April if a new election date has been announced. This week, we pick stocks with growth potential or dividend plays to mitigate impact from the slowdown.

Our choices are KKP (good earnings growth prospect and high dividend) and PTG (good earnings growth prospect). BJC and WHA stocks in our portfolio have been sold to cut loss. We prefer to hold BTS (launch of extension and expected dividend payment this month. Its targeted price is revised up to Bt9.90), and CK for brighter business prospects (rise in liquidity this year from auction worth more than Bt300 billion).

Stock picks

l KKP: Technical fair price at Bt69.75

l PTG: Technical fair price at Bt10.00

– Tisco Securities

Sideways upside

The SET Index will swing up sideways this week with the support line at 1,550 points and resistance line at 1,6001,620 points. The stock market has been supported by net buy of local institutional investors and rising crude prices. Strategically, we prefer to hold big caps with high dividend (PTT, SCC, ADVANC, BBL, KTB) which have outperformed the market.

Factors for monitoring this week:

1 US-China trade talks in Beijing, January 78. It is the first face-to-face talks after the 90-day halt to new tariffs since December 1. If progress is made, global risk sentiment will improve.

2 The ECs comments on the election schedule and the possibility of an announcement this of a new election date. If it’s certain that the poll will be held in March, it will boost market sentiment.

3 Progress in the US government shutdown. We still view it as pressuring the US dollar and indirectly positive for the baht.

4 Return to discussions on Brexit. The Brexit deal will be voted on by members of parliament in the week beginning January 14.

This will be a year of “breakthroughs” in all sectors and see Vietnam striving towards “the highest achievements”, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc wrote in an article on the socio-economic developments in 2018 and ambitions for 2019.

Despite an array of challenges from the global economy and internal weakness, 2018 was a year with many resounding successes for the Vietnamese economy, wrote Phuc.

GDP growth reached US$238 billion, translating to year-on-year growth of 7 per cent, the highest since 2008 – putting the country amongst those with the strongest growth in the world.

He said impressive growth was achieved while macroeconomic indices remained stable and on an upward trend, with inflation and the consumer price index (CPI) kept under control.

The “strongest driver of growth” came from manufacturing industries with a growth figure of 13 per cent, he wrote, pointing to the country’s reduced reliance on extractive industries and credit.

Phuc said several records had been achieved for the Vietnamese economy, with export value – especially agricultural products – reaching an all-time high of US$245 billion and Us$40 billion, respectively.

Vietnam has become a leader in several areas, from agriculture products like rice, shrimp and fish to high-tech industries like smartphones, electronics and automobiles.

The ratio of non-state investment reached 43.3 per cent of the total investment in the country, which includes US$19 billion from foreign direct investment, showed that the Party Central Committee’s resolution on the development of the private economic sector has proved a success, the prime minister said. He added that experts and observers consider Vietnam amongst the most attractive destinations for investment in the Asia-Pacific region.

Vietnam drew 15.5 million foreign tourists in 2018, up 19.9 per cent compared to last year, forming a solid basis to achieving the target of 20 million arrivals during 2020, he said.

Phuc predicted that the country would fulfil all goals set out in the five-year plan by 2020.

GHB also offers a special 3 per cent a year interest rate for the first three year for renovation of homes for new and existing customers.

And for customers who had their homes destroyed and cannot work, the bank will suspend loan payments for the first four months and offer zero per cent interest rate for the first year.

As well, the bank will restructure the debt of customers who lose their earnings due to the storm and offer 1 per cent interest rate for the first year.

Consistency in education reforms stressed

AN INCOMING elected government should give priority to pushing ahead with education reforms in order to ensure the country has workers with sufficient skills, a forum has been told.

Kamalinne Pinitpuvadol, executive director of the International Institute for Trade and Development (ITD), said that a government to be formed after the scheduled national election in February should focus on continuity of national policy regarding skills development – especially in education – as a crucial factor in driving the economic development of the country.

“The reform of the education sector, which plays a significant part in people’s development, should be pursued in the same direction throughout the country.

“For this reform, we need a good brainstorming session from all stakeholders, including academics, the labour sector, civil society, and community,” he told the forum, which was entitled “The trend of human capital development strategy in Thailand: Building Thai citizen 4.0 to the |new world”. The event was hosted by ITD.

Kamalinne said that workers’ skills should be developed so that they can keep up with the changes in technologies, especially in the area of Big Data analysis and the use of computers, as well as in entrepreneurship. Their skills will increasingly rely on interpersonal communication, and the inter-dependence of community society and environment, he said.

“Thailand’s educational sector should be developed in accordance with the new industrial and business contexts, which have been changed dramatically,” he said.

“They should be also connected perfectly with the dimension of international trends and the pluralism of society,” said Kamalinne, adding that all stakeholders need to change their mindset in the development of workers’ skills to be in line with the disruptive transformation of the technology, economic and societal spheres.

He said the government and other authorities should make an in-depth analysis on the industries and jobs of the future, as far out as the next 20 years, as those industries and jobs will be impacted.

With the emergence of digital and robotic technologies, workers will be replaced by robots and automated processes in many areas of works such as in front-office services, finance and banking, and the manufacturing industry. Nhabhat Chaimongkol, assistant director of the Office of Strategy and Organisational Communication, ITD, said that to develop skills in a more sustainable way, Thailand needs to settle the problem of inequality in training as its strategy for the digital era.

“The key challenge in the development of human capital is that many people, especially marginalised persons, cannot access the educational system,” he said.

“Another challenge is the health problems that obstruct many people from achieving greater productivity. They also should be able to access the public health system effectively.”

Nhabhat said that Thailand should promote a positive identity of the Thai people in the eyes of foreigners, such as their traits of working hard, their circumspection, diligence, and honesty.

Urgent need for industry to speed up technology change, KPMG study finds

Economy January 04, 2019 01:00

By   THE NATION

THE FOURTH industrial revolution (Industry 4.0 or i4.0) requires transformational change at a pace that the majority of manufacturers will fail to meet if they continue on their current trajectory, according to new research from KPMG International.

KPMG yesterday issued a warning to manufacturers that they are vulnerable to disruption from competitors and new market entrants. KPMG is calling for CEOs to create a top-down strategy and implement large-scale change now in order to meet the realities of manufacturing in today’s market.

“Few organisations have developed holistic, end-to-end interconnectivity – our definition of the highest level of i4.0 maturity – among today’s breakthrough i4.0 tools and technologies. Most are still at the beginning stages, where investment is made due to projected cost savings.

The digital revolution is about so much more than efficiency, and manufacturers not embracing a new business model will likely face threats to their survival in the very near future,” the research concluded.

In the new report, “A Reality Check for Today’s C-suite on Industry 4.0 – Experimentation is Ending”, KPMG has identified a false sense of security held at the top levels of many manufacturers. As organisations implement single-project, bottom-up approaches to transformation – from physical plant changes, |to integration of big data – cost efficiencies are cited as proof of i4.0 transformation.

Companies may see their bottom lines increase in the short term, but KPMG has found that individual initiatives are proving to cost more and yield less in the longer term when a business has to correct its course due to the incredible pace of change experienced by the manufacturing industry.

Tidarat Chimluang, head of industrial markets at KPMG in Thailand, said that many companies in the country are struggling to keep up with the pace of change and making the necessary technological adoption to reach industry 4.0. This is especially true in the agricultural and food processing industry, a staple industry of Thailand.

According to a study done by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, less than 3 per cent of small businesses and less than 5 per cent of medium-sized businesses in the industry are considered part of the digitally-focused 4.0 era.

The hope is that the government’s Thailand 4.0 scheme will help push industry in the right direction. Importantly, companies must realise they need to prepare for the future, envision a big-picture strategy that best suits their firm and make the firm agile for change.

KPMG suggests manufacturers define what the organisation needs to look like tomorrow in order to be competitive or disruptive.

With that in mind, they should design a strategy with a detailed plan and create a culture that supports wholesale change. Organisations with that foundation are well placed to lead the change we are seeing in industrial manufacturing today. “If manufacturers aren’t well on their i4.0 journey by 2020, they will have a problem keeping up with new market entrants,” said Tidarat. “They don’t have to have completed the journey, but they must have the foundation in place: a strategic approach, a holistic plan of transformation and the right culture to embrace change.”

Hunt for yield, fragile property market high on BOT watch list

Hunt for yield, fragile property  market high on BOT watch list

Economy January 04, 2019 01:00

By   THE NATION

THE Bank of Thailand (BOT) is keeping watch on risks to the financial system posed by factors ranging from investors’ search for yield and fragility in the property market to high household debts and increasingly large swings in capital movements.

However, the central bank notes that domestic financial institutions are strong and the overall financial system is stable.

The financial system’s stability – particularly on the external front – remains sound and this reflects a consistent current-account surplus and high foreign reserves, the BOT report said. Debt in proportion to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) is low, helping the Thai economy to deal with risks from global money-market fluctuations.

Thailand’s financial institutions have strong finances, mirroring the high capital base of the commercial banks. This should help them cope with risks if there are more loan impairments, the report said.

However, the central bank is continuing to monitor some risks. The main one, it says, is investor behaviour driven by the search for yield, possibly leading to the underpricing of risks as a result of prolonged low interest |rates.

Investors’ search for higher yield through savings cooperatives is continuing, the BOT said in its report.

These cooperatives recorded high growth in assets and deposits and risks to credit and liquidity remained and needed monitoring as some large cooperatives made more short-term borrowings for securities investment.

Also, firms’ capital raisings through debt and equity instruments for overseas expansion could make their financial structure more complex and lead to the underpricing of risks, the BOT said.

On another front, the central bank is waiting to see the results of the new measures for residential loans that will come into force on April 1. In the lead-up, demand for homes may rise if buyers rush to make borrowings for second homes.

The BOT said that oversupply in the property sector was also on watch as, earlier, demand from foreigners for condominium units had risen. Caution in this sector may be required if the Chinese economy slows down more than expected, as the Chinese have been a key force in the ranks of foreign buyers.

Another risk lies in the high household debt even though it has declined slowly and prolonged low interest rates could help households to make new borrowings.

This would likely reduce their ability for future repayments and lead to a reduced ability of households to deal with the economic uncertainties.

Some small enterprises, particularly those impacted from structural changes, have registered a weak financial status.

They included rice mills and retail businesses. The situation was in line with the high level of commercial banks’ high non-performing SME loans, at 4.7 per cent.

Yet another risk relates to the higher volatility of capital movements on the back of a list of concerns ranging from the US trade sanctions, the US upward interest rate trend and uncertainty over Britain’s exit from the European Union. These factors could affect the cost of borrowings through bond markets and the extension of short-term debt instruments.

Although most firms have launched debt instruments with credit ratings of “A” or higher, the global upward trend for interest rates could trigger higher costs for borrowings through debt instruments. Some issuers that a low credit rating – most of which are in the property sector – may have to roll over their debts.
