NBTC MOVE PUSH FOR TAX ON OTT PLAYERS IN OWN COUNTRIES

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) will propose to the meeting of the Asean broadcasting and telecom regulators in Thailand late this year that all Asean regulators should slap VAT and corporate income tax on the over-the-top (OTT) players in their countries to ensure a level playing field to all players in the digital content field.

NBTC secretary general Takorn Tantasith made the remark yesterday at the opening of the two-day seminar, International Symposium on Converging Technologies & Disruptive Communications-Moving Forward, which was hosted by the NBTC in Thailand.

Takorn added that the Digital Advertising Association (Thailand) estimated that total spending on digital media advertising will reach more than Bt14 billion by the end of this year, growing about 21per cent from last year, and Facebook will remain the most popular platform followed by YouTube.

On the other hand, the overall ads spending on terrestrial TV channels has declined by about 10 per cent per year on average from more than Bt2.5 billion in 2015 to about Bt2 billion at the present.

The OTT operators are those delivering media content to viewers, such as films and TV programmes, via the Internet.

Normalisation of monetary policy could impact global stocks, expert cautions

STOCK prices could take a hit if there is a reduction in global money supply, Pornchai Prasertsintanah, Thailand’s country manager and head of South Asia Equities of Credit Suisse Securities (Thailand) Ltd, said.

In the next two to three years, the global money supply will be the most important factor in influencing the change in global stock prices, Pornchai said at an annual press interview.

“From 2008 to today, there has been a significant increase in global money supply, which is one of the key factors pushing up global stock prices and asset prices”, he explained. “Hence, if there is a reduction in the global money supply, it will have a big impact on stock prices.”

Credit Suisse is one of Thailand’s top foreign institutional brokers, a leading investment bank in Thailand as well as a wealth management firm. It established itself in Thailand in 2000 and led Thailand’s first-ever concurrent convertible bond offering and equity placement in 2017. In the past 10 years, Credit Suisse has completed 27 equity and equity-linked transactions, raising US$9.1 billion for Thailand-listed companies.

“The biggest swing factor in global money supply in the past five to six years has been the role of the government in different countries. Governments are trying to normalise their monetary policy, which has been ‘super easy’ since the 2008 global financial crisis. I believe this will be the most important factor influencing stock prices in the coming years,” said Pornchai.

Normalisation in monetary policy will involve an increase in interest rates, which will decrease money supply in the economy, which in turn will lead to a fall in stock prices.

Speaking about the global trade war, Pornchai warned investors to be more on the cautious side in the next 12 months. There is a high level of difficulty in forecasting what the trade policies of the US and China will be, hence it constitutes a risk factor investors should be aware of.

“Despite this worry, we think the trade war is more of a negotiation game,” he said. “All parties involved in this trade negotiation want what is best in the economic interest of their respective countries. Hence, both sides will eventually settle for negotiations and avoid an all-out trade war.”

Pornchai said that despite these geopolitical risks, there were promising prospects for economic growth and stock market stability for the rest of this year. However, he said there would be a higher risk for investors with regard to the stock market next year, as trade wars often have a lagged effect on the economy.

Meanwhile, the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) has been performing relatively well with increased investments in new types of bonds as well as investments abroad, Pornchai said. Various investors in Thailand are becoming more interested in investing abroad. Since 1997, Thailand’s government has been implementing capital control measures and gradually loosening the extent of control over capital flowing out of the country, according to Pornchai. As Thai investors have mostly been investing in Thailand, a large portion of their total investment capital is in Thailand. Therefore, Thai investors are now looking to invest in foreign markets to diversify their risks and to capitalise on profit opportunities in foreign emerging markets, he says.

This growing interest to invest abroad has led to the purchasing of new investment instruments such as perpetual and convertible bonds in Thailand’s stock market, said Pornchai.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives will today ask the Ministry of Energy (MOE) to buy 100,000 tonnes of rubber in stock as a measure to ease price impact on rubber growers.

Grisada Boonrach, agriculture and cooperatives minister, said that the rubber of 100,000 tonnes is a part of total rubber of 310,000 tonnes bought by Rubber Authority of Thailand (RAOT) during the Yingluck Shinawatraled government’s Farmers’ Institute capability development project to stabilise rubber prices and this government’s buffer fund.

PPP panel gives nod to fast-track motorway project

THE Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Committee is going ahead with the Nakhon Pathom-Cha-am motorway project at a cost of Bt79.01 billion to facilitate transport to the South of Thailand, and has urged related agencies to propose projects under the fast track PPP scheme within this year.

The PPP Committee meeting yesterday, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, and attended by Prapas Kong-ied, director-general of the State Enterprise Policy Office and director and secretary to the PPP Committee, explained that the committee had agreed in principle to the Department of Highways’ proposal to build the Nakhon Pathom-Cha-am motorway under the PPP fast-track scheme.

The PPP investment will be based on net cost basis. Under this model, the state would pay for land rights and invest Bt55.8 billion for civil works, while a private enterprise will spend on construction expenses, consultancy services, operation and maintenance, and rest area management for 30 years from commencement of service.

The Nakhon Pathom-Cha-am motorway project is expected to help alleviate traffic congestion on Highway No 4, called Phetkasem Road, and also serve as a high-quality motorway to the South.

The PPP Committee also urged the Transport Ministry and state agencies, which are the owners of the projects under the fast track PPP scheme, to implement their projects on schedule. These projects include the Purple Line’s southern extension between Taopoon and Kanchanaphisek Outer Ring Road, and the Orange Line section from Thailand Cultural Centre to Min Buri.

Line, TV, Facebook top

A RESEARCH by the College of Management of Mahidol University (CMMU) found that the top 3 medias most accessed by seniors were Line (50 per cent), television (20 per cent), and Facebook (16 per cent) while the least popular among this group are newspapers, YouTube and websites.

The five types of advertisement most viewed by the seniors were television commercials, video clips, photos, articles and infographic, it said.

Moreover, the research team found that 93 per cent of the seniors knew how to use Search Engine for information. In this regard, the CMMU hosted an event titled “Silver Age Content Marketing”.

The college’s head of marketing department Boonying Kong-aachapat said that as Thailand would become an aged society in 2025, issues concerning healthcare and well-being of the elderly are taking on importance.

Thailand has a population of 64.5 people, 9.4 million of whom over 60 years old or 14.5 per cent of the population. The number increases by 500,000 per year, and it is expected that in 2025, Thailand will be an aged society with about 14.4 million seniors or more than 20 per cent of the total population.

The study was conducted among 604 seniors aged 55-70 years. It has found the reasons behind the popularity of the top three medias used by them :

Line: Its easiness to use for communication. The findings revealed that when an elderly saw their favourite contents, they would use a sticker instead of texting to respond because it was not convenient for them to text.

Television: It is the original media that is still influential to the elderly. Most elderly left the television on without changing channels and watched it to overcome loneliness.

Facebook: The elderly considered Facebook more difficult to use than Line. When they wanted to share information with others, they were not sure which button to press and they had to press it many times. They relied on others to help them. Thus, the elderly did not often use Facebook because they did not want to bother others.

US-China tariff dispute ‘may escalate to full-blown war’

Economy September 07, 2018 01:00

By The Nation

The direct economic effect of the US-China tariff dispute has so far been limited, though that may change as the countries escalate their rhetoric – and their actions – in what could soon be a full-blown trade war, S&P Global Ratings reported yesterday.

An escalation of the current US-China trade dispute that adds a 25-per-cent tariff on all non-fuel goods could shave roughly one percentage point off the US GDP by 2021. For China, the loss to GDP would be around six-tenths of 1 per cent, an article titled “Global Trade at a Crossroads: It’s Hard to See Any Winners in a US-China Trade War”.

“Attempts to help those hurt by globalisation via higher tariffs or other forms of protectionism, even if well meaning, will raise prices and hurt all consumers, especially poor and middle-class families,” US senior economist Satyam Panday said. “Not to mention damage the competitiveness of companies that import raw materials and components from other countries and folks who work in export industries.”

European firms wooed for creation of financial hub in EEC

Thailand plans to attract leading European financial institutions to help develop a financial centre in the country’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) to forge a financial link with Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV).

Industry Minister Uttama Savanayana held discussions with Geoff Donald, executive director of the Europe-Asean Business Alliance (EABA) and representatives from 15 leading European firms who called on Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak yesterday.

Uttama said: “Thailand has the proper location to become a financial hub and Somkid has told us about the policy to promote Thailand as a regional financial hub, especially linked to CLMV.”

The EEC also has a plan to set up a financial centre for convenient financial transactions.

“We insist on supporting the policy” to promote Thailand as a financial hub, particularly linking Thailand to the CLMV, Uttama said in response to a question from Netherlands’ leading financial institution ABN Amro.

The representatives of the 15 European firms who met Somkid yesterday came from the finance, medical services, bio-industry and cybertechnology industries. EU direct investment in Thailand is the third highest behind Japan and China.

Moscow-based security software-maker Kaspersky Lab is interested in setting up a research centre, while Swiss healthcare company Hoffmann-La Roache AG is interested in establishing a research centre on biotechnology and biology. Both have been encouraged to invest in the Eastern Economic Corridor of innovation (EECi).

The Thai government has prepared an action plan on business and financial hubs (2017-21), aiming to develop a special economic zone in the East as a pilot area for Thailand 4.0 and focusing on innovation and technology development.

Among the key targets are to make the EEC a centre for investment for targeted industries, business and financial transactions, aiming to lure investors and firms to set up their operations ranging from international headquarters, international trading companies, treasury centres to financial institutes. The area has been earmarked as business and financial hubs in the future.

Both offshore and onshore transactions are targeted for transactions in this area, while some measures and legal issues will be adjusted. An example is allowing foreign financial institutions to set up more branches in the area and drafting the land and building law for ease of doing business.

SET teams up with Clearstream in drive for Thai mutual funds

Economy September 07, 2018 01:00

By   THE NATION

THE STOCK Exchange of Thailand (SET) and Clearstream Banking S A, one of the world’s leading international securities depositories, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen the joint-investment funds’ business through the online linkage between SET’s FundConnext mutual fund platform and Clearstream’s Vestima global fund processing platform yesterday.

This marks the unprecedented cross-border cooperation and aims to broaden promising opportunities in the Asian investment fund markets for international investors.

The linkage between these two platforms is in response to foreign investors’ demands for the Thai funds’ market investment.

The collaboration includes order routing facilitation, asset servicing and settlement services of investment funds for Thai domestic investment funds. The link is to go live in early 2019.

In the future, it will also provide access to the international investment fund markets for Thai investors.

SET President Pakorn Peetathawatchai said that this groundbreaking collaboration marks a key milestone for the Thai fund industry’s transformation in connecting the Thai investment fund market to global investors, thereby accelerating the growth of the Thai mutual fund industry.

FundConnext has been built in close collaboration with the Thai mutual fund participants and the support of the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission as one of the capital market’s open architecture and interoperable platforms.

This is the first and only platform that streamlines mutual fund processing in Thailand.

Within just one year from the first day of operation, FundConnext can now expand to serve foreign participants and take the Thai mutual fund industry to the international level by serving as a gateway for investors in 56 countries to capture investment opportunities available in the Thai mutual fund industry with an asset of Bt4.6 trillion (EUR 121 billion).

“We are delighted that Clearstream will be the first foreign participant to utilise this standardised infrastructure to enter into Thailand,” he said.

Philippe Seyll, Co-CEO of Clearstream Banking SA and head of Investment Funds Services at Clearstream, said the cooperation with SET continues the development of our Asia funds strategy allowing more international investors to gain easy access to the local fund markets.

Rapee Sucharitakul, Secretary-General, The Securities and Exchange Commission, Thailand stated that the initiative of FundConnext is a proven solution for processing the Thai mutual funds. It helps standardise working processes across the entire industry. The linkage between FundConnext and Clearstream is a key move of FundConnext to drive the growth of Thai mutual funds. The SEC congratulates on this success and will continue to provide regulatory support.
