TK Park puts screening on hold

lifestyle April 25, 2019 01:00

By THE NATION

The opening film of TK Park’s 2019 contemporary world series “Ready to Roll. Exterminator” (“Gotowi na wszystko.Exterminator”) from Poland has been postponed until further notice as the venue is closed, due to the damage caused by the recent fire on the 8th floor of Central World.

The film is supported by Polish Embassy in Thailand and was scheduled for Saturday, May 18 at 4pm. A new date for the screening will be announced when TK Park reopens to the public on July 1.

The film depicts five devoted friends who shared a great dream when they were kids – to rock the Polish metal music scene and draw big crowds to their concerts as the band Exterminator. The band broke up and now its leader, Marcys, works in his father’s store and his relationship with Magda is in crisis.

Guitar virtuoso Lizzy is a bank employee, bassist Jaromir punches a time card at a polyurethane foam factory and struggles to live up to his responsibilities of head of a family, and drummer Makar is in a mental institution. The fifth member, Cypek, emigrated for financial reasons. However, one day, old memories return. The mayor turns out to have been a great fan of Exterminator and promises to finance their reunion. But there is a catch: The guys have to betray their ideals and perform at a number of fairs, playing songs quite distant from their usual repertoire. Their male pride won’t let them compromise, and their long-standing friendship as well as their relationships with women will be put to a true test.

The film created a wave at festivals abroad and was a big hit at home.

Tiger roars again

lifestyle April 25, 2019 01:00

By THE NATION

Rolex Testimonee and one of the greatest golfers of all time, Tiger Woods made an historic return to the Major-winners circle with a momentous victory at Augusta National Golf Club in the 83rd Masters Tournament earlier this month.

Demonstrating the spirit of perpetual excellence, championed by Rolex, the 43-year-old, Woods, who made history and inspired a generation with his first Major win at the Masters in 1997, has made one of the most remarkable comebacks the game has ever witnessed. He began to show the extent of his extraordinary return to elite golf first in 2018, coming close to victory in two Majors before winning the Tour Championship.

Eleven years since his last Major victory, and on the famed fairways of Augusta National where the Californian has won four times previously, the legendary golfer was rewarded for his exceptional perseverance.

Woods held off fierce competition from fellow multiple Majorwinner and Rolex Testimonee Brooks Koepka to earn the revered Green Jacket for a fifth time, taking his tally of Major wins to 15, and PGA Tour victories to an extraordinary 81.

With this historic win, Woods has closed the gap on two longstanding records currently held by fellow Rolex Testimonee Jack Nicklaus of 18 career Major wins and six Masters victories.

Exemplary rounds of 70, 68, 67 and 70, put Woods atop the prestigious field of 87 of the world’s leading golfers and past Masters champions. Joining Woods in the top 10 from the Rolex family were Australian Jason Day, USA’s Rickie Fowler and Brooks Koepka, and Spaniard Jon Rahm.

Acknowledging the magnitude of his win after putting on the Green Jacket, Tiger Woods said: “It’s overwhelming. To now be the champion 22 years between wins is a long time. It’s unreal for me to experience this. My mom was here, and she was there in 1997 as well and so I just couldn’t be happier and more excited.”

“It’s one of the hardest I’ve ever had to win, just because of what has transpired over the last couple of years of trying to come back and play. I was close last year a couple of times with the chance in the last two Major championships – I applied what I learnt from those two and was able to seal the deal today.”

2019 is already a poignant year for Rolex, which this year celebrates a 20year relationship with this inimitable Tournament, but with Woods’ win, the 83rd edition of the Masters Tournament will live long in the memory as a cause for double celebration.

Happy feet with Geox

lifestyle April 25, 2019 01:00

By THE NATION

Thanks to Geox’s technological innovations for footwear, the 2019 spring and summer season collection once again revolutionises the concept of breathability and aeration, bringing a new way of living and walking no matter the time of day.

For men, the adaptable, everyday-use Aerantis is a new simple, elegant walking shoe that has curved lines and tonal colour matching. Inside, it conceals an air circulation system, built from a sophisticated mix of technologies. Thanks to circular, geometrical elements of varying sizes, the sole provides excellent support and boosts the breathability of the Net Breathing System and the new Ventilation System, an EVA midsole, which helps air to circulate, while the upper ensures all-round breathability, thanks to a lining with air pockets and a new soft touch covering that helps heat to dissipate.

The star feature of the new Nexside model is the Side Transpiration System, a technology developed to ensure superior breathability through holes in the sides of the sole. Between the midsole and the tread are agrooves that increase shock absorption and form chambers of air that are connected to the outside through holes on the edge of the tread. What’s more, Nexside not only features the Inner Breathing System, but also the Ventilation Arch, a breathable mesh insert placed in the shoe over the arch.

For women, feisty forms, deft details, uncommon combinations and original takes on old classics and sketch the contours of a strong sense of femininity in a collection that looks eagerly to modern trends yet stays loyal to those features of breathability, impermeability and absolute comfort.

Loafers and sports shoes are a harbinger of one of the main themes of the season – strikingly sturdy soles that in these pieces of footwear bring to the fore the contrast between dazzling white and the soft camel shade of the suede leather, embellished with folksy fringes.

This mishmash of influences has been accented with small studs and golden pythonprint details. Studs crop up again in degrade detailing to claim their rightful place as a focal decorative element and means to emphasise the design of leather sandals featuring a squared heel. These sandals are elevated with a refined pale beige palette or come in black, tan or darkbrown, in a flat version or boasting oversized buckles whose masculinelooking silhouette is counterpointed by a wedge.

MINIMALISM for the wrist

Danish watch brand bulbul offers some unusual designs

PEBBLES are not symmetric, square or round so why, Danish brand Bulbul asked, should a watch called Pebble be? The timepiece, best described as rounded and slightly asymmetrical, recently made its debut in Bangkok, along with other models from the stylish and minimalist brand.

Founded in 2013 by Jacob Juul, Bulbul draws on KiBiSi for the design of its funky but functional watches. Considered as one of Scandinavia’s most influential design teams, KiBiSi is led by Bjarke Ingels, Lars Larsen and Jens Martin Skibsted and works across a wide range of disciplines, creating everything from furniture and household objects, to bicycles and aircraft, and signature designs to new functional and aesthetic hybrids.

Available at the multi-brand M Market on The Emporium’s ground floor and at TheseCoolThings.com, Bulbul gets it name from a passerine songbird and offers meticulously designed and creatively crafted watches with movements made from genuine 14K Swiss gold and premium316GL stainless steel and boasts crystal sapphire dials plus straps made of German stainless steel and Italian leather. Water resistance is up to 3 atm and each watch comes with a two-year warranty.

Defining an international hybrid of heritage and openness with precise Swiss movement, the watches are made to last.

“Pebble is the first watch in the timepiece world to break the traditional rules with its asymmetrical dial that means all four corners have different angles and radiance. Indeed, the watch is complicated to produce even though it looks very simple. It is rare to see a new shape in the watch world. Normally the watch shape is driven by geometry; round or square. We spent two years developing this innovation and we are super happy that it became an instant hit as an item worth owning and is still very popular,” notes Juul.

“Bulbul is now five years old. It goes against the grain of the classic watch industry, which is quite conservative and very technical. Danish design is different. It is more playful and very minimalist, and has a long life cycle in the design. I always hoped that the two worlds could meet. So I contacted KiBiSi, the stars of the Danish architectural world. I told them to try and design a watch that they would like to wear. They are the optimal target group – people from the creative industry. They came up with the first design that became the Pebble watch.”

A golden version of Pebble comes with a traditional material surface in a matte finish, with traditional brown leather and an all white dial and hands – a hybrid of contemporary clean expression and heritage – while the all steel version is an elegant fusion of classic steel mesh and contemporary design.

In 2015, KiBiSi designed the round and refined Facette watch for the Bulbul collection. Facette, a subtle design in precision engineering, incorporates distinct design details while paying homage to an iconic watch shape. The markers float almost unnoticeably on the underside of the sapphire crystal. The Italian leather strap connects exactly in the middle of the steel casing, creating an unusually stylish fit. Inside Facette lies a Swiss-made, 14 Karat gold-plated Ronda movement, with up to 10 years of battery life.

Adding to Bulbul collection, KiBiSi then designed the classic Oblong, a rectangle with a slight curve, which comes in eight styles matched with leather and metal straps creating a subtly flamboyant contrast to the sharp, minimal aesthetic.

Juul says, “Our watch is a lesson in ultra-simplicity. It is what a watch looks like when you remove everything. So simple, it is beautiful in itself. When it is nothing, it is something. Our watches are for people who love an elegant, cool design that is clean and minimalist yet of high quality, going beyond the rules of seasonal fashion that only a Nordic design can offer. The Pebble reflects the philosophy behind Bulbul – the desire to do things a little differently, just enough to be interesting.”

Starbucks introduces reusable cups

lifestyle April 24, 2019 01:00

By THE NATION

As part of its efforts to reduce its environmental footprint and positively impact the communities it serves, Starbucks is launching reusable hot and cold cups in its Thai stores.

For Bt150, the reusable cup is nearly identical to Starbucks iconic white cup and made from polypropylene, which is specially designed to make the cup sturdier than paper. Customers also receive a Bt10 discount for each purchase with a reusable cup.

Globally, an estimated 600 billion paper and plastic cups are distributed annually. Since 2014, Starbucks has offered the reusable cup in the US, Canada and the UK and so far, has sold more than 25 million globally.

“We’ve seen an increase in public awareness and concern for the plastic waste issue in recent years. We’re proud to provide a reusable option in all Starbucks stores in Thailand without making sacrifices to our customers’ daily coffee ritual,” said Nednapa Srisamai, managing director of Starbucks Coffee (Thailand). “We’ll continue to work with all related parties to find solutions and encourage our customers to choose reusability whenever possible.”

Since the beginning of its business operations in Thailand in 1998, the company has been encouraging customers to reuse their cups, and since 2013, has offered a Bt10 discount to those who purchase a beverage with their personal cups. Together, Starbucks and customers in Thailand have helped save more than 10 million single-use plastic and paper cups.

In addition, the company joined the US Green Building Council (USGBC) in 2001 and collaborated with them to develop the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for new construction and commercial interiors and achieve “greener stores”. As of 2019, Starbucks is operating more than 1,500 LEED-certified stores in 20 countries. In line with the company’s global direction, Starbucks Thailand has committed to the green store initiative and achieved more than 50 LEED-certified stores and aims to design, build, and operate 10,000 stores globally by 2025.

Last year, Starbucks committed US$10 million to develop a fully recyclable and compostable hot cup, in partnership with Closed Loop Partners, through the NextGen Cup Challenge, and just announced plans to trial cup technologies in several markets worldwide over the next year. The company is also working to phase out plastic straws from its more than 30,000 stores worldwide by 2020, eliminating more than 1 billion straws a year – a goal that was announced last July. Plastic straws will be replaced by a newly redesigned, lightweight recyclable strawless lid that will begin rolling out this summer in select cities.

Bathing Ape and Neighborhood graphics spice up Adidas sneakers

lifestyle April 24, 2019 01:00

Adidas Original introduces a new edition of POD 3.1 and NMD STLT sneakers in collaboration with A Bathing Ape (BAPE) and Neighborhood (NBHD), two Tokyo streetwear brands have been recognised for their creative graphic designs for more than two decades.

This summer the POD3.1 shoes fuses modern Boost cushioning with design details from the decade that spawned both BAPE and NBHD, resulting in a perfect synthesis of heritage inspiration and forward-thinking.

Famous for their eye-catching effect, each brand employs their own memorable graphics: a two-tone camouflage featuring APE head and NBHD’s skull and crossbones motif splits each shoe in half, while BAPE’s shark teeth and eyes are rendered across the outside of the uppers.

With minimalist styling, the NMD STLT series boasts a Boost mid-sole and socklike Primeknit uppers that make the style tailor-made for streets. BAPE and NBHD meanwhile maintain the minimalist silhouette and deceptively high-performance functionalities of the model, everything else about the shoe becomes bright and bold in their hands.

The uppers feature a distinctive co-designed pattern, while a bolt of lightning yellow lends an unmissable splash of colour to both the inside and outside of the uppers. The lacing system is also reworked, with a co-branded lace cover with bold letters and magnetic lace puller offering a sleek but striking addition to the footwear.

Launched 1993, A Bathing Ape brand has conveyed Japanese fashion culture through street fashion and created such iconic patterns and characters as Ape Head, BAPE Camo, BAPE Sta, Shark Hoodie and Baby Milo.

Founded by Shinsuke Takizawa, Neighborhood takes inspirations from motorcycles and the various associated counter-culture movements. The brand has cultivated an aesthetic built on reinterpreted motorcycle, military and outdoor clothing, refined for an urban lifestyle environment and revered around the world.

Australia, New Zealand remember their fallen comrades

lifestyle April 24, 2019 01:00

By THE NATION

Tomorrow, April 25, is a national day in remembrance of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, or Anzac, of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the First World War and is being marked by both the Kiwi Pub on Sukhumvit Soi 8 and the Australian Pub & BBQ on Sukhumvit Soi 11.

While the event commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who have served in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations, Anzac Day itself marks the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, on April 25, 1915.

When war broke out in 1914, Australia had been a federated nation for only 13 years, and its government was eager to establish a reputation among the nations of the world. When Britain declared war in August 1914, Australia was automatically placed on the side of the Commonwealth.

In 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The ultimate objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany.

The Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli on April 25, meeting fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated from the peninsula, with both sides having suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. More than 8,000 Australian soldiers had died in the campaign. Gallipoli had a profound impact on Australians at home, and April 25 soon became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who died in the war.

Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the actions of Australian and New Zealand forces during the campaign left a powerful legacy. The “Anzac legend” became an important part of the identity of both nations, shaping the ways in which they viewed both their past and their future.

Australians recognise April 25 as a day of national remembrance, which takes two forms. Commemorative services are held across both nations at dawn – the time of the original landing, while later in the day, former servicemen and servicewomen meet to take part in marches through the major cities and many smaller centres. Commemorative ceremonies are more formal, and are held at war memorials around both countries.

The Kiwi and Australian pubs will show the Gallipoli Dawn Service live at 9.30am and the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial Service at 10.30am.

During the day, The Kiwi Pub raises a toast to those who served with Tiger beer at Bt99, Bundy & coke at Bt120 and a Gunfire Breakfast including Black coffee & rum at Bt99. In addition, the pub will have a free BBQ from 6pm with live music to pay tribute to all heroes.

For more information and reservation, please call (02) 653 3144.

The Australian Pub & BBQ, meanwhile, toasts those who served with Singha beer at Bt99, Bundy at Bt120 and Gunfire Breakfast including black coffee & rum at Bt99. In addition, the pub will host a free sausages sizzle from 6pm and live music from Seventh Sense later in the evening.

Let me print you a heart

The first 3D print of a heart with human tissue and vessels is unveiled

Scientists in Israel unveiled a 3D print of a heart with human tissue and vessels last week, calling it a first and a “major medical breakthrough” that advances possibilities for transplants.

While it remains a far way off, scientists hope one day to be able to produce hearts suitable for transplant into humans as well as patches to regenerate defective hearts.

The heart produced by researchers at Tel Aviv University is about the size of a rabbit’s.

It marked “the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an entire heart replete with cells, blood vessels, ventricles and chambers,” said Tal Dvir, who led the project.

“People have managed to 3D-print the structure of a heart in the past, but not with cells or with blood vessels,” he said.

But the scientists said many challenges remain before fully working 3D printed hearts would be available for transplant into patients.

Journalists were shown a 3D print of a heart about the size of a cherry, immersed in liquid, at Tel Aviv University as the researchers announced their findings, published in the peer-reviewed journal Advanced Science.

Researchers must now teach the printed hearts “to behave” like real ones. The cells are currently able to contract, but do not yet have the ability to pump.

Then they plan to transplant them into animal models, hopefully in about a year, said Dvir.

“Maybe, in 10 years, there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the world, and these procedures will be conducted routinely,” he said.

But he said hospitals would likely start with simpler organs than hearts. In its statement announcing the research, Tel Aviv University called it a “major medical breakthrough”.

Cardiovascular disease is the world’s leading cause of death, according to the World Health Organisation, and transplants are currently the only option available for patients in the worst cases.

But the number of donors is limited and many die while waiting.

When they do benefit, they can fall victim to their bodies rejecting the transplant – a problem the researchers are seeking to overcome.

Their research involved taking a biopsy of fatty tissue from patients that was used in the development of the “ink” for the 3D print.

First, patient-specific cardiac patches were created followed by the entire heart, the statement said.

Using the patient’s own tissue was important to eliminate the risk of an implant provoking an immune response and being rejected, Dvir said.

“The biocompatibility of engineered materials is crucial to eliminating the risk of implant rejection, which jeopardises the success of such treatments,” said Dvir.

Challenges that remain include how to expand the cells to have enough tissue to recreate a human-sized heart, he said.

Current 3D printers are also limited by the size of their resolution and another challenge will be figuring out how to print all small blood vessels.

But while the current 3D print was a primitive one and only the size of a rabbit’s heart, “larger human hearts require the same technology,” said Dvir.

3D printing has opened up possibilities in numerous fields, provoking both promise and controversy. The technology has developed to include 3D prints of everything from homes to guns.
