The government and private sectors must improve gender equity to boost sustainable growth in the Asia-Pacific region, speakers at the Apec CEO Summit in Bangkok said on Friday.

Timothy D Dattels, Canada’s Apec Business Advisory Council member, told the session on “Creating Gender Equity to Drive Growth” that the issue had reached a tipping point in his country thanks to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s commitment to gender equality within the Cabinet.

“PM Justin Trudeau ran a campaign on gender equality and delivered,” he told delegates at downtown Bangkok’s Athenee Hotel.

He also highlighted the link between gender parity and business performance.

North American companies in the top quartile for gender equity outperform their peers by 27%, he pointed out.

“Organisations need to rethink training, hiring and incentivising structures, particularly to address gaps at the entry level,” he said.

Meanwhile, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Thailand, Gita Sabharwal, said sustainable development starts by promoting gender equality in organisations.

She said social protection programmes are needed to promote gender equality as many women work in the informal economy where social welfare is lacking.

“In Asia, every other woman works in the informal economy, with low pay, low skills and very little social support,” she said.

She advised upskilling women in information communication technology (ICT) and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to allow greater participation in developing industries.

“Financing for female entrepreneurs also should be strengthened to open new opportunities,” she added.

Kasikornbank (KBank) CEO Kattiya Indaravijaya argued that equal opportunities should be offered to women at the education level as well as in the workforce.

“Equality extends not just to women, but also LGBTQ+ identities as well,” she said. “All genders, including LGBTQ+, should have equal opportunities.”

She added that equal opportunity among all genders is crucial to driving sustainable growth.

“When we talk about growth, it is not just about the economy but people’s well-being and happiness,” said the bank chief.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron highlighted the importance of a multilateral world and urged Apec countries to join hands for win-win solutions on Friday.

Macron made the plea in his keynote speech, “Navigating a Turbulent World”, for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit at the Athenee Hotel in Bangkok.

The French leader said the world faced a turning point over three scenarios: the Russia-Ukraine war, climate change, and the confrontation of superpowers. All three were undermining the global order, trade and investment, he added.

Macron said the US-China trade conflict had done damage by forcing other countries to choose sides.

“Are you on the US or the China side?” was the question asked, said Macron, who added, “But we need a single global order.”

Countries must re-establish international rules and multilateralism in order to maintain global peace and stability, he told the CEO summit.

To avoid new conflicts, it was imperative to establish a new equilibrium and stability at the regional level, he said.

” A dynamic balance is the best way for nations to avoid being forced to choose between superpowers. Countries have to pursue inclusive, sustainable development to address inequality and instability,” he said. “You compete, all of us want to win. But you have to respect the sovereignty of the other one.”

He also told business leaders at the summit that capitalism’s DNA must be recalibrated to make global trade and development more inclusive, equal and sustainable.

Joint statement unlikely at end of Apec 2022, says ministry

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2022

The Foreign Ministry believes Apec 2022 may be wrapped up with a statement from Thailand as chair of the meeting instead of a joint statement from all member countries.

This idea was aired by Natapanu Nopakun, the Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman, at the daily media briefing on Friday.

He said a joint statement may or may not be issued because the Apec leaders did not just discuss economic matters.

However, he said, the most important thing is for each Apec country to take concrete action after the summit.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern shared her experience in implementing inclusive growth with executives from Google and Toshiba Thailand in an effort to support an inclusive economy in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) region.

Ardern stated during an open forum discussion on “Promoting Inclusive Growth and Development in APEC” that inclusion is always her guiding principle when launching any policies or regulations after discovering that some people in her country are still living in poverty even as the country grows.

“We ensure that national development means improving people’s lives. We measure by prioritising people’s happiness and welfare … for example, by educating girls and young children, who will change the lives of the entire community,” Ardern said.

She mentioned some of her government’s projects to help indigenous people and micro, small, and medium-sized businesses so that no one in New Zealand is left behind.

She admitted that while some of her projects are not perfect, they do help her government learn and do better the next time.

Her efforts drew thunderous applause from the audience.

An inclusive economy, along with sustainability, is one of the buzzwords at this year’s Apec CEO Summit, as countries around the world reopen their borders but struggle to connect with one another.

Ardern insisted that inclusion and cooperation are critical for driving economic growth in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Karan Bhatia, Google’s Global Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy, and Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Toshiba Thailand’s chairperson, both agreed with her.

They emphasised that for sustainable growth, everyone must participate and benefit.

Bhatia said one factor contributing to negative public perception of globalisation is a lack of inclusive growth.

Hence, establishing an integrated region with opportunities for all will significantly aid expansion of the Asia-Pacific.

He highlighted the significance of technology and digitalisation as another secret weapon for increasing people engagement and providing enormous opportunities for small businesses and underrepresented individuals to scale upwards.

So, it is critical to educate people in digital skills and literacy, according to Bhatia.

Kobkarn added that inclusive growth should be the responsibility of all parties, including policymakers, the private sector, and local citizens.

She emphasised the importance of collaboration, which must be accompanied by real action and based on long-term sustainability as a goal.

“Collaboration does not imply another memorandum of understanding. You must believe in your ability to make a difference. Start with yourself and we can change the world,” Kobkarn stated emphatically.

Although it is easier said than done, Ardern encouraged everyone not to lose hope, to hold on to the benefits of integration, and to ensure that they reach everyone.

Buakaw Banchamek is a well-known boxer dubbed the god of Thai boxing, with many wins under his belt. Muay Thai is a popular martial art, with many Thais learning it not just as a pure form of self-defence but also as a way of life.

This Muay Thai demonstration is one of the few special events organised by Thailand’s Foreign Ministry which didn’t fail to capture the attention of Thai and foreign media alike.

The activities included a demonstration called “Wai Kru”, a ritual performance by Muay Thai fighters which pays homage to trainers both past and present. On the heels of the performance was a workshop, inviting media members on stage to get one-on-one training by boxing star Buakaw himself.

None other than Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanee Sangrat, who took part in the workshop, showed his boxing skills on stage.

Buakaw is considered the most successful Muay Thai fighter, having won many tournaments, such as the K-1 World Max Championship, Shoot Boxing World Cup and World Muaythai Council World Championship.

Many Muay Thai boxers use the sport to break through poverty, resulting in a number of boxing camps popping up all over the country, with temple boxing and other big competitions bringing entertainment and providing a way to sustain many Thai families.

It may look like a dangerous and painful sport as fighters need to undergo heavy training, but it is also considered an entertainment sport for both Thais and foreigners, attracting international fighters and fans from across the world to training camps in Thailand.

The sport is so popular that more than 4,000 Muay Thai camps have emerged in 36 countries, especially in Brazil, Iran, India, The United States and Hong Kong.

Thailand’s famous Muay Thai champion and martial artist, Buakaw Banchamek, wishes to teach Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) leaders powerful punches and kicks of Thai traditional boxing.

The multiple times Muay Thai champion said after a demonstration and media workshop at the media centre on Wednesday:

“If I get the chance to teach them [the leaders] Muay Thai, I’ll show them how to punch, kick, and elbow. These are the fundamental but powerful and dangerous moves of Muay Thai,” he explained.

The demonstration was one of several special events organised by Thailand’s Foreign Affairs Ministry in collaboration with CP Group to promote the country’s culture.

He expressed his joy at being one of the Thais invited to the Apec Summit 2022.

“When it comes to Thai culture, Muay Thai is one of the best known in the world. When foreigners think of Thailand, they remember not only how beautiful we are, but also a martial art that has been inherited for a long time.”

Buakaw and his Lanna Fighting Camp team demonstrated many Thai traditional martial arts, beginning with a worship ritual, Muay Thai training, and a fighting and media workshop.

The event drew a lot of attention from Thai and foreign media, as well as Buakaw fans.
