A decade ago, Thailand native KK Limbhasut came to America with his father, four suitcases and no real plan – other than wanting to play professional golf.

Limbhasut (the Ks stand for Khem Khon) was 14 when he touched down in Los Angeles not knowing what was next. He and his father, who had introduced him to the game five years earlier, were planning to go to San Diego but ended up in Loma Linda – about 90 minutes east of Los Angeles’ international airport. There, a family friend helped them to move in and get settled.

At 14, he was away from his mom and sister, and looking back now, he admits it was tough. But he came with a dream, and it’s now very nearly fulfilled.

Limbhasut started the 2020-21 Korn Ferry Tour season with just conditional status, but after a T12 result at the El Bosque Mexico Championship by INNOVA, followed three months later by a T10 at the Korn Ferry Challenge at TPC Sawgrass, he has bolstered his position in the reshuffle entering a busy summer stretch of the schedule.

“I’m just really glad to be back and playing full time,” said Limbhasut after the approximately three-month pandemic hiatus.

Born in Bangkok, Limbhasut started playing golf as an 8-year-old, enjoying rounds with his family. He said his dad played a lot of golf, but it quickly became something his whole family would do.

“If (my dad) was going to play golf by himself, he’d be gone for half a day. Instead of doing that, he would tell my mom and me to pick up the game and we could all play together,” said Limbhasut.

“That’s how it all started.”

One day, Limbhasut recalled, he went to the course with his dad and played with a competitive junior golfer. It was the first time Limbhasut thought that someone else was really good and it was ‘cool’ to play golf.

“That’s why I wanted to play tournaments,” said Limbhasut, who was 9 at the time. Five years later he and his dad wanted to pursue both education and competitive golf together. That system, Limbhasut said, doesn’t exist in his native Thailand.

Although he grew up around many of the other Thai names in professional golf these days –and Kiradech Aphibarnrat on the PGA TOUR, and the Jutanugarn sisters on the LPGA Tour (“She is amazing,” said Limbhasut of Ariya Jutanugarn, former world No. 1) – there wasn’t an opportunity for him to both get a great education and play golf at a high level. It was one or the other, he said.

He spent two summers playing golf tournaments in the U.S. before moving to California full-time, and Limbhasut said there was a culture shock when he first came to America. He went to a private international school in Thailand, so he learned English, but it’s not unlike how Spanish is taught in the U.S. – it would be rarely outside the classroom. He was among a class of 30 in Thailand, and at his public-school in California, he was one of approximately 700.

But he got adjusted, making friends on the golf course and tracking down some solid Thai restaurants. “It took a while,” he jokes.

He was comfortable in California. When it came time to choose a college, he wanted to stay in the state and specifically join a Pac-12 school. That meant UCLA, USC and Cal-Berkeley were tops on his list. Limbhasut decided on Cal, where he met future TOUR winner – and fast friend – Collin Morikawa.

Morikawa, who has made 22 consecutive cuts including securing a victory to begin his PGA TOUR career as a pro, said their friendship grew when Limbhasut finished runner-up to him at the 2016 Sunnehanna Amateur.

“We’ve been super close for a while and we talk almost every day. We talk like he’s my brother,” said Morikawa. “It’s awesome to see players that are my age, who I know really well, play well on the Korn Ferry Tour and hopefully make their way out here.

“You see the relationships guys (on the PGA TOUR) have and they’re really close. And yeah, I’ve got a handful of friends out here but I’m not as close with them as I am with KK.”

We’ve been super close for a while and we talk almost every day. We talk like he’s my brother.

Limbhasut said he and Morikawa – who majored in business together – learned a lot from one another. They kept pushing each other to be the best player in college they could be. They competed, Limbhasut said, in everything – not just golf. And they practiced together almost every day because they had the same class schedule.

Morikawa describes Limbhasut as “super consistent,” with a “deadly” short game. The TOUR winner said he spent almost every day during their college tenure trying to learn from Limbhasut on his short game.

“That’s where he’s going to score. When he has shorter courses and he can hit short irons, that’s when he’ll go really low,” said Morikawa. “But he’s an awesome guy, just really mellow and a really nice guy.”

Don’t be fooled by that nice-guy persona, though. Limbhasut wants to win, and he wants to get to Morikawa’s level. “We kept pushing each other to be the best golfer in college as we could, and we both have done pretty good,” said Limbhasut. “He’s on the PGA TOUR doing some pretty big stuff, but I’m on the Korn Ferry Tour, which is not too far from where he is.”

And Limbhasut, despite coming to America full of unknowns, is now just one step away from achieving his ultimate goal: getting on the PGA TOUR and joining Morikawa.

As it turns out, the journey from Thailand to the TOUR isn’t too far at all.

Christian Lee on Potential Matchups at Lightweight and Becoming Two-Division ONE World Champion

Jun 24. 2020Christian Lee Christian Lee

By THE NATION

When Christian Lee captured the ONE Lightweight World Championship last May 2019, no one expected the young Singaporean to hold a candle against such an iconic and dominant champion in Shinya Aoki, let alone dethrone him.

But the young man nicknamed “The Warrior,” who just recently turned 22, shocked the world and became the youngest male mixed martial arts world champion in history by putting together an impeccable performance, not only beating Aoki, but finishing him inside of two rounds.

Like a true champion, Lee does not mind taking on the best challengers in his division to further prove his claim to the lightweight throne as legitimate.

Undefeated Moldovan Iuri Lapicus is the current number one contender at lightweight. He owns two high-profile victories over top talents including Thailand’s Shannon Wiratchai, and former featherweight king Marat Gafurov.

Sitting at the number two spot is Turkey’s Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev, who Lee already once defeated in another one-sided affair during the final round of the ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix Championship. Lee stepped in as a late replacement for American Eddie Alvarez, and ended up winning the tournament.

Needless to say, Lee is in pole position right now, as far as the hottest athletes go in ONE Championship.

“I will defend my belt against anyone, anytime. The lightweight division is the most stacked division in ONE Championship, so I feel like it will only be right to start with the number one contender and work my way down until my division is cleared out,” said Lee, about his plans to defend his title.

Not looking past Lapicus, however, Lee says he is also open to making other high-profile bouts, particularly against legends in Alvarez and two-time former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard Folayang of the famed Team Lakay.

A showdown with Alvarez, the former UFC lightweight champion, would effectively pit the best in the east versus the best in the west, something that combat sports enthusiasts have long clamored for.

Lee is wise not to take any opponent lightly.

“Eddie [Alvarez] has done enough in his career to make him a legend of this sport, so I would love to share the ONE Circle with him when the time comes. I think that our styles would make for an exciting fight for the fans,” said Lee.

“I think that Eddie is a very well-rounded mixed martial artist. He has great striking, wrestling, and just recently displayed great Jiu-Jitsu in his last outing against Eduard Folayang. He’s a very complete fighter who does not have too many weaknesses. It would be a big mistake to underestimate his skill set.”

As for Folayang, who is regarded as a national icon by many in his native Philippines, Lee says it would be an honor to share the stage with one of Asia’s most beloved sports heroes.

“I would love to share the ONE Circle with Eduard Folayang. I have a lot of respect for all that he’s accomplished in his career, and I think that we could put on a great show for the fans,” said Lee.

“Eduard is a very good striker, and is now rounding out his wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu. However, I feel that his main strengths are his heart and his killer instinct. He’s the two-time former ONE Lightweight World Champion, so he doesn’t have many weaknesses. I think he’s a great fighter.”

Despite many potentially incredible matchups against the lightweight division’s elite, Lee says he also aims to eventually become a two-division ONE World Champion by taking on a familiar adversary. As soon as his first title defense at lightweight is out of the way, Lee is gunning for Australian Martin Nguyen’s ONE Featherweight World Title.

“After I successfully defend my belt, I plan on going back down to featherweight to challenge Martin Nguyen for his title,” said Lee.

“I am the reigning and undisputed ONE Lightweight World Champion, and also the number one contender in the featherweight division. The only reason I go back down to featherweight will be to fight for the title.”

Lee has had two tries at defeating Nguyen in the past, coming up short on both occasions. However, the young “Warrior” continues to improve with every bout, and promises to show “The Situ-Asian” something different if and when they meet in the Circle once again.

Driving into the unusual scores at TPC River Highlands

Jun 24. 2020

By PGA Tour.com

TPC River Highlands, site of this week’s Travelers Championship, isn’t the hardest course on the PGA TOUR. It’s also not the easiest, which raises this question: Why have there been so many remarkable scoring performances there during the last dozen years?

The golf course, part of the PGA TOUR’s TPC network that includes THE PLAYERS Championship’s TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and TPC Scottsdale, home of the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Arizona, has been the host of the Travelers Championship since 1984 when the course was known as the TPC of Connecticut. A rebranding took place in 1991, to its current name that describes the landscape and water features in this Hartford suburb.

The course’s history began in 1928 when it opened as Middletown Golf Club. In 1934, it became Edgewood Country Club, its name until the PGA TOUR bought the property in 1983 and hired famed architect Pete Dye and his protégé Bobby Weed to redesign the course to TPC standards so it could host a PGA TOUR event. Since becoming a TOUR host, TPC River Highlands has had a knack for being the place to some very special rounds.

Yet, in the last 10 years, the course has been right in the middle when it comes to the TOUR’s toughest-course rankings, averaging as the 27th-hardest among the TOUR’s some-50 courses it plays each season. So, not everybody is slaying the course, yet some are. In the 36 times the best players in the world have visited the course for the Travelers Championship, a few notable players have turned in several remarkable scoring feats, led by Jim Furyk’s 58 in the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship, the lowest score in PGA Tour history.

The course also yielded a 60 to UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay, in 2011 still the TOUR’s lowest 18-hole score by an amateur. River Highlands has also witnessed five different 61s and a PGA TOUR record seven consecutive birdies by Kevin Streelman to finish his tournament and secure victory in 2014. It’s also not just one-round dominance. In the TOUR’s storied history, only 10 players have enjoyed lower 72-hole scores than the 258 Kenny Perry shot when he won the 2009 Travelers.

Furyk thinks he knows why so many historic rounds have occurred at the course 24 kilometers from downtown Hartford.

“It’s a very liked golf course on the PGA TOUR, and a lot of players love coming here to play. I think one of the reasons why is they say that it really doesn’t favour [one] style,” says Furyk. “You’ve got a guy like Bubba (Watson, winner in 2010, 2015 and 2018), who bombs it, and he loves the golf course, and then you’ve got guys who are much shorter hitters. I think the fact that it doesn’t weed out a bunch of players is the reason folks like it.”

While subscribing to that theory, Furyk was admittedly surprised his 58 came at TPC River Highlands, a course he had only played twice—in 2001 and 2011—prior to his record-breaking performance in his third visit to the property.

“It’s funny, I thought the same of Conway the first time I played it, and my two lowest rounds ever on the PGA Tour are places that I’m not ultimately the most comfortable, if that makes sense,” said Furyk, noting his next-lowest 18-hole score, a 59, that came at Conway Farms, host of the 2013 BMW Championship outside Chicago.

The last of Streelman’s two PGA Tour titles was at the Travelers Championship. Entering the final nine at TPC River Highlands, what he calls his “favorite nine holes on the PGA Tour,” Streelman trailed by seven shots. Because he enjoys those nine holes so much, he said he never felt out of contention. His seven consecutive birdies to finish the tournament not only gave him a one-stroke win over South Korea’s K.J. Choi and Spain’s Sergio Garcia, his string of circles on the scorecard also broke a 58-year-old TOUR’s record held by Mike Souchak when Souchak won the St. Paul Open on the final day with six birdies in a row to finish his round.

“I love this back nine. I just kind of felt at peace this week that I was going to go have fun and enjoy it, and you know, to do what we did was pretty amazing,” Streelman added.

Hunter Mahan won the 2007 Travelers Championship winner, and he shot his career-low PGA Tour round, a 61, on Sunday in 2012, probably summed it up best.   “It’s a great course, a great tournament. Travelers does a great job. It’s a fun place to play. This week always gets me excited,” he said.

Chez Reavie won the tournament last year which has attracted another stellar field this week.

The yellow shirt Webb Simpson wore on Sunday at the RBC Heritage wasn’t a casual fashion choice.

He didn’t take it out of his closet because it would look good with that red tartan jacket that goes to the winner of the tournament, either. Of course, turns out that it did.

No, Simpson wears yellow on Sundays because it was his late father Sam’s favourite colour. And in an unusual quirk of scheduling due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the RBC Heritage, once cancelled and later postponed, was concluding on Father’s Day.

“This morning I thought about him, and when I was on the golf course, I thought about him,” Simpson said. “… So still feeling my dad all around me from memories. He loved golf. He would have loved watching today.”

Indeed. Sam’s son took control of the RBC Heritage on the back nine, making birdies on five of his last seven holes for a 7-under 64 to earn the seventh victory of his PGA TOUR career by a single stroke from Mexican rising star Abraham Ancer. With the win, Simpson climbed to the top of the FedExCup standings as well as to No. 5 in the world.

Of course, the U.S. Open, which was postponed until September, usually is the tournament that ends on Father’s Day. So, this actually marks the second time Simpson has celebrated victory on this holiday – and Sam was still alive when his boy won the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club.

“I’ll never forget calling my dad after on the way to the press conference, and when he picked up the phone, he just was laughing,” Simpson said. “That’s kind of what he did when he was happy, he would just laugh. So, I’m going to miss that laugh today for sure.”

For Simpson, who lost his dad jn 2017, the ascent is part and parcel of the hard work he’s put in over the last three years after finding himself on the outside looking in when everyone else was playing in the TOUR Championship and making Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup teams like he used to do.

“I really have a desire to be in that top 10 or 15 guys in the world ranking all the time and have chances to win, not just twice a year, but as many times as I can,” Simpson said. “So that led me to just look at every part of my game, whether it’s working out or the mental approach, and see if I can get better.

“That was three years ago probably. So, yeah … it feels great to see the hard work pay off and see that the process I’ve put in place is working. But we’re nuts. We always think we can get better, and I think there’s room to grow.”

Sunday’s final round was a roller coaster of emotions that featured as many as seven players tied for the lead. Turning up the heat, too, on this steamy afternoon was a different kind of race – this one to finish before darkness after a weather delay of two hours and 35 minutes.

Simpson, who also won THE PLAYERS Championship in 2018 on Mother’s Day, had held at least a share of the second- and third-round leads. But he had to come from behind over the final nine holes, chasing Tyrrell Hatton, Ancer and Joaquin Neimann, among others to seal the win.

“Honestly, the last kind of 10 holes were a blur because guys are making birdies, we’re trying to finish before night comes,” Simpson said. “And so, to finish with five birdies like that was really special, especially after going kind of yesterday and the first 10 holes, 11 holes today not making putts.

“To see the putts go in when I needed them, that was really fun to see the ball going in the hole.”

The feverish competition worked in Simpson’s favor, too. As he saw birdies being posted, he knew he had to be a little more aggressive after giving up ground on the front nine. He played the final nine holes with authority and confidence, and was rewarded at the end.

“It’s typically not a golf course where you can force it, but today after the storm, it softened things out, not much wind, we could go attacking,” Simpson said. “Guys kept making birdies. I was blown away with the scores, but there I hit my run, 12 through 17, and ultimately that’s what made the difference.”

And Simpson, who has five kids of his own, now has a new celebration for Father’s Day.

Liverpool edged a point closer to their 19th league title on Sunday, after the English Premier League restarted on bended knee following the Covid-19 lockdown.

Sunday’s Merseyside derby ended in a 0-0 stalemate with Liverpool dominating possession but Everton almost clinching three points when Tom Davies hit the post at an empty Goodison Park in the 80th minute. It began with all players taking a knee before kick-off as part of the Black Lives Matter protest against police brutality.

Liverpool can seal the title at Anfield on Wednesday with a win against Crystal Palace, but only if Manchester City fail to beat Burnley tonight (June 22).

The EPL relaunched last Wednesday (June 17) with second-place Man City scoring a 3-0 win over Arsenal. Leicester, in third, were held to a 1-1 draw away at Watford while fourth-place Chelsea improved their chances of Champions League football next season with a 2-1 win at Aston Villa. Manchester United, who drew at Spurs, and Wolves who beat West Ham 2-0, round out the top six.

Thai athletes told to go ‘faster, higher, stronger’ ahead of Olympics

Jun 22. 2020

By The Nation

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan has ordered Thai sports to strive for greater success on the global stage to maintain the country’s honour.

The order comes as Thai athletes begin preparing for the Tokyo Olympics, which have been postponed till 2021.

Prawit instructed the Sports Authority of Thailand and Thai Olympic Committee to prepare for the return of international competitions as the Covid-19 crisis eases, and boost Thai sports’ level in order to win more titles.

He also expressed gratitude towards Thai athletes and sports officials who have devoted themselves to training for competition despite the Covid-19 lockdown.

Defence Ministry deputy spokesman Col Patchasak Patirupanon said sports were funded under the 2020 government budget.

World Boxing Council minimum weight champion Wangheng Menayothin retired from professional boxing on Sunday night with a world record of 54-0.https://if-cdn.com/1GwZZWJ?v=1&app=1

Dubbed as “the Dwarf Giant “ due to his height of 158cm, Wangheng – originally known as Chayaphon Moonsri – made the announcement on his Facebook page.

“I’ve made a clear decision to retire from boxing,” the 34-year-old posted. “No one knows my body better than I do. Everybody wants money but I’d rather save my body,” the Maha Sarakham native wrote.

Throughout the span of his career dating back to February 2007, Wanheng had been indomitable, equalling Floyd Mayweather’s 50 unbeatable records with a knock-out victory over Panama’s Leroy Estrada in May 2018. Later that year he boxed his way past this mark with a win over Pedro Taduran of the Philippines in August. He beat Simphiwe Khonco of South Africa in his last fight (54th win) last October.

However, all his wins including 18 knockouts took place on home soil. In fact, he was committed to his first overseas title defence against Filipino Marco John Rementizo in the United States in April but the match was cancelled due to the Coronavirus crisis.

Lee believes grappling experience gives her the edge against Zamboanga

Jun 20. 2020Angela Lee Angela Lee

By THE NATION

It’s been eight months since reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee stepped into the ONE Circle to defend her title.

Denice “The Menace Fairtex” Zamboanga

That five-round war against strawweight queen Xiong Jing Nan in Tokyo last October brought the best out of the 23-year-old, with Lee turning in an impeccable performance to exact vengeance on the athlete who gave her the first professional loss of her career.

She was slated to return to action later this year, but when the global health crisis struck hard early, plans on Lee’s next bout were shelved.

As the situation with Covid-19 eases throughout the world, however, and ONE Championship is able to resume hosting live events once again, Lee is ready to climb back into the Circle at the soonest possible time to defend the title against her next challenger.

“I’m just excited to get back in the ONE Circle again. I’m feeling extremely motivated for my next matchup. I think it’ll be a great fight,” said Lee.

While there is no official confirmation of who her next opponent will be, Lee is expected to face number one ranked female atomweight contender Denice “The Menace Fairtex” Zamboanga of the Philippines.

Zamboanga punched her ticket to a world title shot with a masterful and dominant performance over veteran and former two-time ONE World Title challenger Mei Yamaguchi just this February in Singapore.

The Filipina warrior, who trains with Stamp Fairtex at the famous Fairtex Training Center in Pattaya, Thailand, burst onto the scene with a shocking upset victory over highly-regarded Jihin Radzuan last December, and then followed up that performance with the win over Yamaguchi.

“I think Denice is very well-rounded. She’s an up-and-coming fighter. I also think that her team did a great job in creating a smart game plan for her in the Yamaguchi fight, and she was able to execute that plan and get the decision win,” said Lee.

“She’s young, hungry, and well-rounded. She is the new breed of MMA fighter that can do it all. She can strike, wrestle, and grapple. But I think she may be inexperienced in certain areas of the game.”

Lee is most likely referring to the area of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), in which she has shown exceptional skills. “Unstoppable” is known for her tricky ground game, as the majority of her opponents have had difficulty escaping from the clutches of her top game as soon as action hits the mat.

7 of Lee’s 10 career victories have come by way of submission, including the infamous ‘Twister’ submission she successfully executed against English-Filipina striker Natalie Gonzales Hills in 2015 — one of the rarest submission maneuvers ever seen in mixed martial arts competition.

Despite having trained in BJJ since she was young, one major factor contributing to her skill growth is being able to roll with her husband, highly-decorated BJJ champion Bruno Pucci. Pucci, himself a ONE Championship athlete, met Lee when they became teammates at Evolve MMA, and the results of their hard work have certainly shown.

The two now live in Waipahu, Hawaii, where they established United BJJ, a branch of their family-owned gym United MMA which focuses on the grappling arts.

“I love training with my husband. He always pushes me hard and brings out the best in me,” said Lee.

“I’m very grateful to have him as my partner in life and in training. Bruno is a second degree BJJ black belt and a two-time No Gi world champion. He has a lot of knowledge and I really appreciate everything that he shares with me.”

While all bouts begin on the feet, Lee has a knack for scoring quick takedowns, bringing her opponents to the ground where she enjoys a sizable advantage. Needless to say, Zamboanga must be prepared for when that happens.

Lee is confident she can retain her title, and put together another amazing performance fans will be happy with.

“I just think it’ll be a great fight. The fans will love it. It will definitely be exciting. But when that final bell rings, you will hear the words, ‘and still,’” she said.
