Symetra Tour Set for Return to Play July 24-26 in Michigan

Jun 18. 2020

By THE NATION

The Symetra Tour announced today that it will resume the 2020 season with the seventh annual FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship at Battle Creek Country Club in Battle Creek, Mich. from July 24-26.

This event will mark the first tournament to be played by the LPGA Tour family following a three-month hiatus. It is also the first of nine tournaments on the remaining 2020 Symetra Tour schedule, making an even 10 tournaments for the 2020 campaign.

“We are extremely grateful to our partners and host venues for continued flexibility and support,” said Mike Nichols, Chief Business Officer of the Symetra Tour. “They have worked tirelessly to keep all hopes and dreams alive for the next generation of LPGA Tour stars. In addition to Symetra Tour sponsors, the ANNIKA Foundation recently showcased an unparalleled form of generosity with their Crisis Relief Fund providing $50,000 in grants to Symetra Tour players financially affected by the coronavirus.”

Two Symetra Tour events have changed dates, including the Founders Tribute in Mesa, Ariz., at Longbow Golf Club, a recent addition to the schedule. Originally set for Aug. 27-29, it will now lead the West Coast swing from Aug. 14-16, followed by the IOA Championship presented by Morongo Casino Resort & Spa from Aug. 21-23. Meanwhile, the Four Winds Invitational at Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend, Ind., will now be played Sept. 4-6 instead of July 31 through Aug. 2.

The Symetra Tour will conclude the season in the southeastern United States, starting Sept. 18-20 with the Guardian Championship in Prattville, Ala., at the Capitol Hill Senator Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The Tour will then head to Florida for two weeks, competing at the IOA Classic brought to you by RP Funding from Sept. 25-27 in Longwood at Alaqua Country Club, followed by the Symetra Classic from Oct. 1-4 on the Jones Course at LPGA International in Daytona Beach. The 2020 season will then conclude with two weeks in North Carolina, with the Carolina Golf Classic from Oct. 28-31 at Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst and the season-ending Symetra Tour Championship from Nov. 3-6 in Davidson at River Run Country Club.

Purses are still being finalized, but players on the Symetra Tour will be competing for greater than $1.5 million during the season. Additionally, the Symetra Tour will once again award LPGA Tour Membership to the top players on the Volvik Race for the Card money list at the end of the year. However, five cards will be available instead of the 10 that have been distributed each year since 2008.

2020 season to resume with new LPGA Drive On Championship at Inverness Club, followed by Marathon LPGA Classic presented by Dana at Highland Meadows Golf Club

The LPGA Tour announced today that it will resume its 2020 season with back-to-back events in Northwest Ohio.

The Marathon LPGA Classic presented by Dana, which had been scheduled to take place July 23-26 at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio, has accommodated the LPGA request to shift its dates and will now be held Aug. 6-9. One of the longest running events on the LPGA Tour, the Marathon LPGA Classic will allow spectators on site following recent approval from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.

This schedule adjustment allows the LPGA Tour to add a new three-day event in the Toledo area and provide its Members with an additional playing opportunity during the shortened 2020 season. The Tour will now return to competition with a new event for the 2020 season, the LPGA Drive On Championship. The three-day, official tournament will be held July 31 to Aug. 2 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Televised on Golf Channel, the LPGA Drive On Championship will feature a field of 144 players competing for a $1 million purse and will take place without sponsors, pro-ams or spectators. It will provide LPGA Tour players and TV viewers with an early look at the famed Inverness Club, which has hosted U.S. Opens and USGA National Championships, PGA Championships, NCAA Championships and is the venue for the 2021 Solheim Cup.

“Thanks in part to the generosity of our partners who could not reschedule their events in 2020, we are adding a valuable additional playing opportunity for our LPGA Tour members,” said LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan. “We are so appreciative of our longtime partners, Marathon and Dana, as well as the memberships at Highland Meadows and Inverness, for adjusting their schedules and helping us create a valuable two-week stretch in the Toledo area as we work to safely return to competition. This new event will allow us to test our COVID-19 protocols before we get to welcome back our fans at the Marathon LPGA Classic presented by Dana.”

NBA pitches players on life in the bubble: Luxe hotels, golf and lots of social distancing

Jun 17. 2020

By The Washington Post · Ben Golliver · BUSINESS, SPORTS, HEALTH, BASKETBALL

In a memo sent to all 30 general managers Tuesday, the NBA painted the most detailed picture yet of what daily life will be like for teams and players when the 2019-20 season resumes at a single-site campus next month in the Orlando, Fla., area.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver painted the broad strokes of the health and safety protocols during an interview with ESPN on Monday, noting that the restrictive environment “may not be for everyone” and that players would not be punished if they chose to stay home. In the memo, which was sent by Byron Spruell, president of league operations, the league outlined additional health and safety guidelines, including onboarding, housing and recreational opportunities. A copy of the 2,400-word memo, which was first reported by The Athletic, and an attached 33-page player handbook was obtained by The Washington Post.

In recent weeks, players have raised a variety of concerns about the plan, including questions about the specifics of the health and safety protocol, doubts about quality of life on the campus, and a rising sentiment that basketball’s return could distract from ongoing social justice protests. The memo and handbook sought to pitch the benefits of the Disney properties and facilities, while Spruell noted that NBA’s goals for the restart included “combating systemic racism, expanding educational and economic opportunities across the Black community, enacting meaningful police and criminal justice reform and promoting greater civic engagement.”

Upon arrival at the campus, all staff and players will be placed into an in-room quarantine for 36 hours after undergoing two separate coronavirus tests. While on campus, players will be required to maintain at least six feet of social distance and wear masks, unless they are eating, in their own rooms, outside and socially distant, or actively engaged in basketball activities. Everyone on campus will also be “prohibited from entering another person’s sleeping room due to limited space, smaller volume of air, and less frequent cleaning.”

Each team will be limited to a 35-member travel party to include players (up to 17), coaches, and other mandatory representatives like a trainer, a strength coach, an equipment manager, a security official and a senior basketball representative. To pool resources and limit the total number of attendees, the NBA will make available physicians, a mental health professional and shared public relations staffers on campus.

The 22 invited teams will compete at three basketball facilities on ESPN’s Wide World of Sports complex – the Arena, the Visa Athletic Center and the HP Fieldhouse – and utilize a total of seven practice facilities, which will be outfitted with four baskets, a weight room and a training room, reserving the spaces in a three-hour block each day. Because the practice facilities are shared, they will be cleaned before and after every session.

Teams will be housed at three hotels spread across Disney World’s sprawling property. The current top four seeds in each conference will stay at the Gran Destino Tower, the bottom four playoff seeds will use the Gran Floridian, and the six remaining teams, including the Washington Wizards, will live at the Yacht Club.

Within those hotels, each team will have access to its own training room, a TV-equipped meeting room for video review, and a “flex space” for socializing and other meetings. Each hotel will also have an indoor “players only lounge” equipped with table tennis and video games, and an outdoor space for card games and other social activities.

While any player or staffer who leaves the campus without approval would be subjected to a 10-day quarantine period as a preventive measure against the coronavirus, all campus residents will have access to golf, bowling, boating, tennis courts, a pool, and running trails, as well as other entertainment options like movie screenings and DJ sets through a concierge service.

They will receive at least three meals a day from Disney chefs, and will be able to dine at restaurants at their hotels, which will be limited to 50 percent capacity and serviced by employees wearing Personal Protection Equipment. Players will also have access to barbers, hair braiders, manicurists and pedicurists, as well as mail and laundry services, and they would be allowed to make arrangements for meal deliveries from their personal chefs at their own expense.

Teams would arrive at the campus no later than July 9 and games would commence July 30. Each team would play eight regular season games, meaning they would be on campus for more than a month. After those seeding games were completed, play-in games for the eighth seed would take place on Aug. 15 and 16 before the standard 16-team playoffs began on Aug. 17.

The last two teams would be kept in isolation for roughly three months given that the NBA Finals would begin Sept. 30 and could run through Oct. 13. Each player on a team that advanced past the first round of the playoffs would be permitted to reserve a guest room for family members to live on campus.

A different victory that tastes just as sweet for Berger

Jun 15. 2020Daniel BergerDaniel Berger

By THE NATION

Fort Worth, Texas – First, Daniel Berger put on the plaid jacket that has been awarded to each winner at Colonial since the early 1950s. Then he received a belt buckle, befitting this city’s motto as “Where the West Begins.” Then the big check, of course. And finally the Leonard Trophy, the 42-inch, 55-pound piece of hardware that probably requires a remodel of every recipient’s trophy case.

Berger stood on the 18th green at Colonial Country Club on Sunday afternoon, the newest champion of the Charles Schwab Challenge thanks to his one-hole playoff win over Collin Morikawa. He held the trophy high in the air. A handful of photographers snapped his picture.

Near the clubhouse, a couple of people clapped. Other than that … well, it’s how it will be for a few weeks now. While the taste of victory is always sweet, this one Sunday was definitely a unique flavour.

“A little different for sure,” Berger said, “but in the end, I was holding the trophy – and that’s all that matters to me.”

In this most unusual of weeks for the PGA TOUR and its return to golf, Colonial found a winner who somehow managed to stay hot during the three-month long suspension of this season. Berger’s last three starts before the conoravirus pandemic changed everything? A T9 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, a T5 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and a T4 at The Honda Classic. Scoring-wise, he rolled into Cowtown with 24 consecutive rounds under par.

In retrospect, we should’ve seen this coming, but given a field with so many big names, including the world’s top-five ranked players, it might’ve been easy to overlook a guy who ranked 107th in the world and 45th in the FedExCup, and whose last TOUR win came three years ago – prior to a wrist injury that developed in 2018 and eventually put him on a Major Medical Extension entering this season.

But he obviously found something before the break, and he didn’t lose it while back home in Jupiter, Florida. Entering the day two shots off the lead, he made his move with three birdies in his first eight holes, including both par 3s on the front side. He never wavered from his mindset starting out Sunday.

“I just kept telling myself, why not me today?” Berger said.

Despite the new environment, the testing protocols, the social distancing rules and the lack of fans due to safety and health concerns, Berger never felt really out of sorts this week. He had rented a house in the neighborhood and could basically walk to the course. His uncle came into town and cooked his breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

He did not venture out anywhere else. If he wasn’t at the course, he was at the house. No where else.

“I thought about the virus very few times this week,” he said. “You know, it’s been such a big part of our lives for the last two months, and I feel like I just tried to do everything I can to be safe, and that’s all you really can do. You wash your hands, you don’t touch your face, you wear a mask when you can, you social distance, and obviously we got tested early in the week, so I knew I was healthy before I got here.

“We had the temperature readings before we got on-site every single day. I knew that all of the employees and staff that were here were doing the same thing. I felt completely safe.”

His game was completely safe, too – especially after his one hiccup of the day at the par-4 ninth when he found a greenside bunker and couldn’t get up-and-down. Once the back nine, Berger was bogey-free while sprinkling in a couple of birdies … including the pivotal one at the par-4 18th with a 10-1/2 foot putt.

Sunday’s win comes against the deepest field in tournament history – and it sends a message that Berger is healthy now and ready to get reclaim some of the territory he had carved out on golf’s landscape before his wrist problems.

“There was so many times today where I could have given it up or let the pressure get to me,” Berger said, “but I hung in there and I played practically some of the best golf I’ve played the last six years the last five holes today.”

ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong
By THE NATION

ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong plans to take a very measured approach before action resumes on the global stage.

Although Sityodtong would love to squeeze in as many world-class spectacles throughout the remaining half of 2020 once restrictions due to the COVID-19 global pandemic loosens up, the lifelong martial artist admits that safety of the staff, fans, and athletes is his top priority.

The world’s largest martial arts organization – which came in fourth in terms of cross-platform views in 2019 with 5.6 billion views, a whopping 1.8 billion views more than UFC – has given fans four incredible events since the start of the year.

Their most recent event, ONE: KING OF THE JUNGLE in Singapore this past February, was done in a closed-door and audience-free setting.

“At ONE Championship, we have the same level of intensity, but I would say we are a little more prudent, because safety is our highest priority,” Sityodtong said.

“We are not in a rush to come back just for the sake of coming back due to our financial commitments to broadcasters and brands and whatnot.

“We want to come back in an environment where we are sure that we can do it safely for all parties involved.”

Apart from the safety of everyone in attendance, Sityodtong admits there are many other factors involved when it comes to producing world-class spectacles at iconic venues across Asia.

Dealing with different countries and various stakeholders means there are different rule sets to abide by. And, with the COVID-19 situation still present, each nation has tightened up their border security to halt the spread of the virus.

There may be some challenges, but Sityodtong has been in talks with government officials to get ONE Championship’s event calendar back and running in the shortest time possible.

“Different governments have different policies on their borders, as well as their lockdown policies, so that’s been a little bit tricky in getting everything up and running,” he said. “But my team and I have been working on it nonstop, and we feel pretty good about it.”

Once the organization finalizes its plans, fans can expect the largest sports media property in Asian history to give them more extraordinary shows over and over again.

NFL commits $250 million over 10 years to ‘combat systemic racism’

Jun 12. 2020
By The Washington Post · Mark Maske · NATIONAL, BUSINESS, SPORTS, RACE, FOOTBALL

The NFL pledged Thursday to contribute $250 million over 10 years to programs that address racial injustice, bolstering the league’s social justice initiatives first established in cooperation with a group of players amid the national controversy in late 2017 over players’ protests during the national anthem.

The announcement came six days after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a video released last Friday evening that the league was wrong not to listen previously to its players and now will encourage their peaceful protests.

“The NFL is growing our social justice efforts through a 10-year total $250 million fund to combat systemic racism and support the battle against the ongoing and historic injustices faced by African Americans,” the league said in a written statement. “The NFL and our clubs will continue to work collaboratively with NFL players to support programs to address criminal justice reform, police reforms, and economic and educational advancement. In addition to the financial commitment, we will continue to leverage the NFL Network and all of our media properties to place an increased emphasis on raising awareness and promoting education of social justice issues to our fans and help foster unity.”

The league would be willing to work with Colin Kaepernick to determine how to use the funds from its latest commitment, according to a person familiar with the NFL’s planning.

Owners of several NFL teams expressed support Thursday for the latest efforts by Goodell and the league, which come amid the national unrest and protests that have followed the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis.

“As someone who has personally lived through episodes of racism and injustice, and can unfortunately relate to what the majority of NFL players encounter on a daily basis, I can say with complete conviction that we now have a real effort at the NFL to bring real and overdue change,” Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan said in a written statement released by the league. “Results won’t come automatically. Success will require constant attention, partnership and hard work. But, as a league, we’ve never been in a better position to answer our obligation to the players, everyone who loves the NFL and to the communities we serve.”

The league said last week on social media that it had donated, to that point, $44 million to its social justice initiatives and was committed to spending another $20 million.

“I want to add my voice and the voice of our organization to the calls for equality and reiterate our firm stance against all forms of racism,” Tennessee Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a written statement released Thursday by the team. “Hearts, minds and institutions need to change throughout our country. Those who face racism need to be heard, and more importantly, understood by those who haven’t listened before.”

Strunk joined Goodell in expressing support for peaceful protests by players.

“Hearing our players and coaches speak over the last two weeks has been constructive to this vital discussion,” she said. “I support our players using peaceful protests and their platforms to advance us as a nation. I would encourage those who haven’t thought about these issues before to understand the pain, anger and frustration of the black community. Black lives matter. We should all agree on that.”

Goodell’s video last Friday was released one day after a group of prominent NFL players, including star quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans, released a video about Floyd’s death and called on the league to act. Goodell’s comments were made with little input from owners, people familiar with the matter said at the time. One of those people said that most but not all owners would be supportive of Goodell backing players’ protests.

The league’s social justice initiatives were established in consultation with the Players Coalition, a group founded by New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins and former NFL wide receiver Anquan Boldin, during the polarizing national debate after President Trump said in the fall of 2017 that owners should fire any player who protests during the anthem. The league also struck an entertainment and social justice partnership last year with music mogul Jay-Z.

Kaepernick, while with the San Francisco 49ers, began the players’ protest movement during the 2016 season by refusing to stand for the anthem to bring attention to racial inequality and police mistreatment of African Americans. Trump and some fans have characterized the players’ protests as unpatriotic and disrespectful to the flag, country and military. Players have said their protests have nothing to do with the military or flag.

Trump recently renewed his criticisms of players’ protests, first after comments by Saints quarterback Drew Brees and then following the NFL’s release of Goodell’s video. Brees apologized after saying in an interview that he would never agree with anyone “disrespecting the flag.”

The Rev. Al Sharpton said during Floyd’s funeral Tuesday in Houston that the league’s apology was insufficient unless Kaepernick is signed by an NFL team. Kaepernick has not played in the league since the 2016 season and settled a collusion grievance accusing the NFL and teams of conspiring improperly, in violation of the collective bargaining agreement, to keep him out of the league.
