Koepka, DeChambeau share Masters lead, Kiradech 3 behind

Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau burst out of the crowd Thursday at Augusta National, firing six-under par 66s to share a one-shot lead over Phil Mickelson after the first round of the Masters.

Hours after 14-time major champion Tiger Woods electrified the crowd by briefly putting his name atop the leaderboard, Koepka lit up the fabled course with five birdies in the space of six holes to break free atop a crowded leaderboard that at one point saw nine players sharing the lead.

But DeChambeau had an answer, roaring home with four straight birdies — and six birdies in his last seven holes.

Mickelson, the three-time Masters winner who at 48 could become the oldest major winner ever, kept pace with the 20-something leaders with five birdies in the last seven holes in his five-under 67.

That matched his opening round in 2010 — the year Mickelson claimed his third green jacket.

He nearly aced the par-three 16th and a birdie at 18 put Mickelson one shot in front of 43-year-old Ian Poulter and 34-year-old Dustin Johnson, who shared fourth place on 68.

Former champion Adam Scott of Australia, Spain’s Jon Rahm, Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat, South African Justin Harding and American Kevin Kiser were a shot back on three-under 69, with Woods heading a big group on 70.

On a day when red-hot Rory McIlroy was left to regret six bogeys in his one-over 73, Koepka didn’t put a foot wrong.

He nabbed the first of his six birdies at the par-five second to make the turn at one-under.

Koepka rolled in a five-footer at the 10th and after a par at 11, he drained a putt from off the green at 12, rolled in a four-footer at 13 and curled in a 16-footer at 14. He hit his third shot to two feet for a birdie at 15 as he stretched his lead to as many as two strokes.

DeChambeau, however, kept the pressure on. He, too, nearly aced 16 and his 195-yard second shot at 18 rattled the flagstick but didn’t drop, leaving him a last tap-in birdie.

There was little in the early scores to predict the late afternoon fireworks.

Woods pronounced himself pleased with his two-under effort — which matched his first-round score for three of his four Masters triumphs.

– Tiger thrills crowd –

He thrilled fans with back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14 to join a big leading group on three-under.

But he couldn’t make a further gain at the par-5 15th, and he missed a nine-foot par-saving putt at 17.

“I felt like I played well and I did all the things I needed to do today to post a good number,” said Woods, despite missed chances from inside 10 feet that cost him on the front nine.

“I drove it well, hit some good iron shots, speed was good on the greens.

“And it was tricky,” he added. “The wind puffs up, it goes down, it switches directions. It’s typical of this golf course. It’s hard to get a bead on exactly what it’s doing at all times.”

But Woods noted that the winds often died down in the afternoon, and when they did Poulter was among those taking advantage.

He grabbed three birdies in a four-hole stretch starting at the par-five 13th. At the par-three 16th he stuck his tee shot three feet from the pin.

“My whole game was together, from the first hole to the 18th hole,” said Poulter, who was a rare bright spot for England on a day on which world number one Justin Rose carded a 75 and in-form Paul Casey signed for an 81.

Arsenal, Chelsea put one foot in Europa League semis

Arsenal and Chelsea closed in on the Europa League last four on Thursday after the Gunners saw off highly-fancied Napoli 2-0 at the Emirates, while Marco Alonso’s late header earned Maurizio Sarri’s side a hard-fought win at Slavia Prague.

Unai Emery’s Arsenal hold a healthy advantage going into next week’s second leg thanks to a fine early strike from Juventus-bound Aaron Ramsey and an unfortunate Kalidou Koulibaly own goal midway through the first half, and can rue missed chances that would have put the tie completely beyond the Italians’ reach.

“To keep a clean sheet and score a couple of goals is a lovely way to start the first leg. We’re delighted with that,” said Ramsey, who should have added the third when he blazed over with nine minutes left, to BT Sport.

“We can go into the second leg with a little bit of a cushion, but we know it will be a difficult place to go… They are a quality team.”

Chelsea meanwhile escaped from Eden Arena after a bitty display that saw Kepa Arrizabalaga have to make some fine saves to keep the Czechs out before Alonso nodded home Willian’s pinpoint cross four minutes from time to seal a 1-0 win.

The Blues remain unbeaten in the Europa League, keeping eight clean sheets in the competition this season, and it was that solidity that saw them through on a tricky evening in Prague.

The Premier League pair remain on a collision course for the final in Baku, with both sides set to avoid each other if they make it through next week’s second legs.

Arsenal were all over Napoli from the kick-off and got their deserved opener with 14 minutes on the clock, Ramsay waltzing in at the end of a beautiful passing move to calmly stroke home Ainsley Maitland-Niles’s neat lay-off.

Napoli were completely out of sorts, barely able to get the ball out of their own half at times, and 10 minutes later the Gunners doubled their lead.

Former Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira won possession in midfield and charged towards goal before letting off a weak shot that flicked off Koulibaly and flew past a bamboozled Alex Meret in the Napoli goal.

Arsenal should have made more of their first-half dominance over Carlo Ancelotti’s slipshod side, but were not punished by the Serie A outfit, who through Piotr Zielinski should have bagged an away goal to take back to Naples in the second half.

“I was surprised by the lack of courage and personality from my players at the start,” Carlo Ancelotti told Sky Sport.

“Turning this around will be difficult now, but we’ll be home at the San Paolo, and our supporters will help us.”

– Record-breaking Felix –

Arsenal will almost certainly take on Valencia should they hold on at what will be an intimidating Stadio San Paolo after the La Liga side scored twice in stoppage time to win 3-1 at fellow Spaniards Villarreal.

Goncalo Guedes scored twice, including what could be the decisive third three minutes into added time, as Marcelino’s side struck with two clinical breakaway goals to give them a great chance of making the semis.

Chelsea meanwhile will likely play Benfica should they go through after 19-year-old Joao Felix became the youngest ever player to score a Europa League hat-trick and set up the other goal in 4-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt that leaves the Bundesliga side, who had to play with 10 men for 70 minutes, with an uphill task to make the last four in Germany next week.

Felix, a revelation in his first season in the Benfica first team, got the ball rolling from the spot in the 21st minute after Evan N’Dicka was sent off for shoving over goal-bound Gedson Fernandes.

He put the hosts back in front just before the break after Luka Jovic — on loan from Benfica — scored a shock leveller against his parent club in the 40th minute.

Ruben Dias made it three when he headed in Felix’s flick-on a from a corner, and the 19-year-old side-footed home Alex Grimaldo’s cross to complete his treble nine minutes into the second half, before Goncalo Paciencia pulled one back with his head from a corner to keep the tie alive.

Thai ace Ratchanok Intanon seeks a vengeance against world No 4 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan as they confront this afternoon in the quarter-finals of the Singapore Open.

The eighth-ranked Ratchanok, who won this tournament in 2016, rallied back from a poor start to beat Han Yue of China 19-21 21-11 21-13 in the second round on Thursday.

Yamaguchi had a much easier time as she cruised past Chua Huo Zhen Grace of Singapore 21-6 21-11.

The Japanese third-seeded player leads the head-to-head series against the Thai 12-9. She beat Ratchanok 16-21 21-14 25-23 in their latest shodown during the German Open final last month.

While there’s no other Thai singles players left in the tournament, two doubles teams of the Kingdom still remain.

Fifth-seeded Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai take on Liu Xuanxuan and Xia Yuting of China in women’s doubles quarter-finals.

In mixed doubles, Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai will play Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Reddy N. Sikki of India.

Jakarta – The OB Golf Invitational will celebrate its second edition on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) when it gets underway in Indonesia from May 7 to 10.

The US$65,000 event will be staged at the highly-acclaimed Royale Jakarta Golf Club, a world-class Championship course that is a regular host venue of the Indonesian Masters on the Asian Tour.

A talented 144-men field comprising of 86 players from the ADT, 50 players from the PGA Tour of Indonesia (PGATI) and eight invitees are set to compete in the event, which marks the Tour’s first stop in Indonesia this season.

The inaugural OB Golf Invitational in 2018 welcomed a worthy champion in Japan’s Shohei Hasegawa who clinched his maiden ADT victory and first professional win by one shot.

Indonesia’s George Gandranata emerged as the highest-placed local finisher, compiling a three-day total of seven-under-par 206 to take fourth place.

Jimmy Masrin, owner of OB Golf, hailed the return of the tournament which will provide more opportunities for Indonesian players to improve their ranks on the OWGR and boost their chances of representing their country at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“We are thrilled to be back on the ADT schedule, that has proven to be a successful platform for aspiring golfers to gain valuable competitive golf experience.

“We are certain that the staging of this event will once again present an exciting opportunity for our home-grown players to pit their skills against the best in the region and improve on their rankings with the OWGR points on offer,” said Masrin.

Cho Minn Thant, Chief Operating Officer of the Asian Tour, lauded the return of the event on the growing ADT schedule.

“We are delighted to be back in Indonesia for another successful staging of the OB Golf Invitational. The country has produced top-notch players like Danny Masrin, the highest-ranked Indonesian on the OWGR, as well as George Gandranata, a one-time winner on the ADT.

“On behalf of the Tour and our players, we would like to express our appreciation to OB Golf for promoting the event and the PGATI for sharing in the mission of the ADT in supporting the growth of the sport in the region,” said Cho.

The leading seven players on the final ADT Order of Merit will earn playing rights on the premier Asian Tour for the 2020 season.

All ADT events offer Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points. The winner will receive at least six OWGR points while the top six players and ties will also earn points based on a sliding scale.

“It’s a very tricky track”: riders saddle up for Austin

sports April 12, 2019 05:36

By MotoGP

The Pre-Event Press Conference kicks off stateside festivities.

A race weekend doesn’t really get in gear before the traditional pre-event Press Conference, and ahead of the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, reigning Champion and undisputed King of the Circuit of the Americas Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) was joined by Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati), Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar), Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) and American Moto2™ rider Joe Roberts (American Racing KTM) to talk about the weekend ahead.

First to speak was Marquez, who took his first win at the track in 2013 and has won every year since, although it’s far from a swagger for the seven-time World Champion on the way into the event – key words being “won’t be crazy”. The numbers don’t lie but Marquez refuses to get carried away.

“Yeah of course Austin has been a really good circuit for me since 2013 so let’s see. It is true that this year we arrive in very good shape, in Argentina we won and almost in Qatar, we have a solid base. It’s important and I feel comfortable but let’s see here. We will start from FP1 like always and won’t be crazy, try to ride like I know and then let’s see. Let’s see the opponents and also the weather, it looks like Saturday will be so so but apart from that try to enjoy this amazing circuit.”

Asked about his secrets to the venue, Marquez didn’t give anything away but did talk a little about the spectacular circuit: “It’s true that it’s a circuit where to have a perfect lap is impossible. Impossible because it’s a really long lap, many corners, many hard-braking points and easy to make a mistake. The most difficult thing is to be consistent over all the laps because it’s a two-minute lap, many hard braking points and it’s so difficult, really bumpy. It’s a track you sometimes have to change the lines each lap.”

Another topic Marquez – and Rossi – were asked about was the handshake seen between the two men after the Argentina GP.

“It was the moment. Like when you kiss a girl in the right moment, it’s the same! We were there in the right moment and we were alone, so we shook hands on the podium after a nice race.  I never had a problem so it’s no problem to have a respectful relationship.”

Laughing at the chosen analogy, Rossi agreed if in slightly different words. “It was right, I congratulated him because he put together a very fast race, a very fast weekend so I think it’s normal.”

So, back on the main agenda, Dovizioso was second to speak. The Italian has been on the podium before at COTA but also seen some bad luck come his way. Pace in Argentina was encouraging, however, which could bode well.

“I´m really happy about the weekend in Argentina. Our speed was really good, we didn’t expect that so I’m happy because it confirms our good pace. It would be nice if it’s like this. For sure, Marc has shown in the past he is the king of this track so it will be very difficult for everybody to fight with him. But anyway, we have to bring the maximum points so we are focused on that and during the weekend anything can happen. We have to see the tyres, the weather, the conditions so I’m relaxed. We have to work like everybody. Our base is quite good, so I expect to be more competitive than last year.

“I think we are a bit more balanced than last year so I think we can be a little bit better everywhere. So that’s why in Argentina our speed in every practice was quite good and I think this is the reason why we can be competitive from the beginning here. I don’t think we have the perfect balance to be really competitive and fight for the victory here but you never know.”

On that topic, Dovizioso, Rins and Rossi were all asked about whether Marquez was unbeatable – but that’s not the way a racer approaches a weekend despite the stats.

“It would be very difficult but nothing is impossible,” was Dovi’s response – something echoed verbatim by Rins just after. Rossi adds, “the numbers say Marquez is unbeatable but you don’t set off from home saying someone is impossible to beat. You try to always improve.”

Rossi was the man who spoke about the weekend ahead next, too. Back on the podium last time out for the first time since Germany last season, that’s where he started.

“One of the best parts of getting a good podium result is the next week because you can be happy and more relaxed. I stayed at home and tried to prepare the maximum for this race. It’s one of the most particular, difficult, technical tracks of the season; up and down, 20 corners, so it’s a long way until the end of the lap.

“The first year I was very slow. I needed a bit more time to understand the track. From 2014 I had a problem with the tyre in the race but I was quite fast. I took some podiums. In 2017 I finished second. It’s a very tricky track, there are a lot of points where you can lose a lot but our bike isn’t too bad, so we’ll try to be strong.”

Next to debrief Argentina a little and gear up for Round 3 was the aforementioned Rins. The Suzuki rider took a top five from well back on the grid last time out and a Hamamatsu factory machine was on the podium in Austin in 2018.

“For sure in races we are very strong. We saw in Qatar, also in Argentina we recover a lot of positions. Btu I think we are going in a good way, we have good speed in practices, good speed in the races, I think we need to improve the speed in qualifying to be in the front positions in the first laps of the race. Overtaking riders destroys the tyres, so we need to think why we start at the back and we need to improve.

“Last year I remember we had some problems on the front of the bike. Race by race we improved the feeling. In Argentina and Qatar the front feeling was very nice, and as Marc says, I think this track is difficult to do all the laps on the same line. It’s very hard, a lot of lines but Andrea did a great race last season. If we qualify better we can be more at the front, but we will see.”

Miller – top Independent Team rider in Argentina – spoke after Rins, and echoed the sentiments of Rossi earlier after equally taking a positive result.

“It was great to be there in the top five. As Vale said, it’s nice to go away from a weekend with a decent result. You know in Qatar I went away almost depressed after the seat flew off so it was definitely good to get that one out of the way. It got difficult at the end of last year I think to do with being on the GP17 as the other bikes developed through the year we stayed where we were. It’s nice to know this year we should be able to fight throughout the whole season with them. We’ve shown in Qatar and Argentina we’ve got good pace. Austin’s normally a track I like. I struggled a little bit here last year, I had a small injury, so I’m looking forward to being 100% fit this year and see how many whoops are on the back straight.”

The Australian was also asked about the difference now he’s riding a GP19 Ducati as opposed to the GP17 last year.

“I know when I come onto the straight I’m not losing metres, I don’t have to brake like an idiot and cook the front tyre, so that helps. I think we’ve got really good pace. And I feel I’ve matured as a rider and in practices we’re doing a lot of work for the race simulation. We need to keep that mentality and keep on working.”

Finally, it was time for home hero Joe Roberts to take to the mic. Despite a difficult start to the season the American is optimistic ahead of his home round, and loves the track.

“It’s fantastic to be here, I always love coming to Austin. Before I was even racing at a world level, it was always a favourite city to visit. Just to be here with all the fans and everything, it’s always a nice feeling. In terms of how the year’s gone, to be honest, it’s been a bit of a difficult start; it’s not where I hoped to be in Qatar. We made a lot of progress in the last round, during the race I was on for my best gap to the front before I crashed. With the new team, everything’s new, sometimes it takes time and you’ve got to look at the positives and take that forward. I think this weekend, this track is quite a hard-braking track and something that I took from last weekend is that we’re really good on the brakes, so I’m hoping that’s going to work here. I’ve always love this track, so I’m excited.”

Roberts was also asked about joining the Press Conference line-up for the first time – and was pretty happy about it.

“Every single one of these guys here has given me some sort of inspiration during my career and being here with them is definitely something special and it’s great.”

That’s it from Thursday Press Conference talk for the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, next up comes the rodeo itself. FP1 begins on Friday morning at 9:55 (GMT -5), with the race on Sunday 14:00.

Super siblings cheer Kiradech ahead of Masters

Thailand’s top golfer, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, had his favourite support crew in attendance as he prepared for his opening round at the Masters in Augusta yesterday (Thailand time).

The Kingdom’s super siblings, Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn, both got a chance to caddie for their fellow Bangkokian at the traditional warm-up event, the Masters Par 3 Contest.

The sisters had been playfully teasing Kiradech and the media for weeks about which one he would choose as his caddie for this year’s contest.

Last year Ariya caddied solo but by happy coincidence, yesterday was recognised throughout the US as National Siblings Day, so it was only right that she and her older sister shared caddie duties.

They were in fine company – Kiradech played the nine-hole, par-27 course with Britain’s former two-time Masters champion Nick Faldo and European Ryder Cup member Jon Rahm during the Wednesday afternoon fun event.

The trio all hit from the tee at the elevated par 3, 9th hole … and to everyone’s amusement the sisters fared better than the 42nd-ranked Kiradech.

Once the golf was finishe the Thai trio attended the Golf Writers Association of America’s annual dinner, where Ariya was honoured as the Female Golfer of the Year for 2018. She was also recognized by the organisation with the same award in 2016.

Ronaldo on another level, says Juve’s Allegri

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri hailed star striker Cristiano Ronaldo as being in a class of his own after he bagged a precious away goal in their 1-1 Champions League quarter-final draw at Ajax on Wednesday.

Ronaldo put Juventus in front on the stroke of half-time with a diving header to take his record goal tally in the competition to 125, only for Brazilian winger David Neres to level almost immediately after half-time to put the tie on a knife edge ahead of next week’s return leg in Turin.

“Ronaldo showed that he is on a different level. His timing and movement is different to everyone else’s, there’s nothing you can do about it,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

“He is a player who just has a different technique than the others.”

Ajax piled on the pressure at the Johan Cruyff Arena, going close on a number of occasions before Douglas Costa nearly delivered a late sucker punch for Juve when he struck the woodwork.

Their spectacular comeback from a 2-1 first-leg home defeat to Real Madrid with a thumping 4-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu in the previous round showed that the tie is far from over.

“It’s a good result because we scored away from home, the tie is still open,” added Allegri, who is looking to guide Juve to their first Champions League since 1996, when they beat Ajax in Rome.

“We were good defensively, the team was nice and compact, there is good reason to think we can get to the semi-finals.

“We are not worried, we have great respect for Ajax but you have to be ready.

“One each is better than 0-0, in Turin we will have to play to win.”

Beating Barcelona tougher than PSG, admits Solskjaer

Beating Barcelona tougher than PSG, admits Solskjaer

sports April 11, 2019 09:17

By AFP

Manchester United face an even tougher task to turn around the 1-0 deficit from the first leg of their quarter-final with Barcelona than their miraculous comeback away to Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16, coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted on Wednesday.

United became the first side to ever overcome a 2-0 first leg defeat at home to reach the last eight with a 3-1 win in Paris last month.

But Solskjaer, who scored the winner when United won the Champions League at the Camp Nou in 1999, believes Barca’s prestigious European history makes beating the Spanish champions a different prospect to PSG.

“Of course the PSG performance away gives us hope and belief we can do it, but we know we are playing against probably the favourites for the tournament,” said Solskjaer.

“It will be a greater achievement winning that one with the history of Barcelona. They are not used to losing at home.”

Luke Shaw’s early own goal was all that separated the sides on the scoresheet, but Barca comfortably edged towards a first Champions League semi-final in four years as United failed to register a single shot on target.

“It leaves a good taste in the mouth to win here, but we know it is not a big enough lead given what happened (with United) in the last round,” said Barca coach Ernesto Valverde.

Much has been made of Luis Suarez’s Champions League goal drought on the road and while the Uruguayan has still not officially netted an away goal in the competition since September 2015, he had a huge hand in Barca’s winner.

Lionel Messi drifted in behind the United defence and his cross hung up to the back post was headed goalwards by Suarez, the ball flicking off Shaw on its way past David de Gea.

An errant offside flag briefly threatened to spoil Suarez’s delight. However, the goal was quickly given on a VAR review and the former Liverpool striker took extra glee at having the last laugh with a fist pump in front of the Stretford End.

“The value of the goal doesn’t change if another player gets the last touch or not,” added Valverde.

The early goal should have settled the Catalans into their stride as their dominance of possession touched close to 90 percent in the opening stages.

Yet they offered United plenty of encouragement with Sergio Busquets in particular off the pace.

“It is very difficult over the course of a season to always be at the highest level,” said Valverde.

“To win away from home in the Champions League you have to suffer.”

– Messi roughed up –

United defender Chris Smalling had said “bring it on” at the prospect of facing Messi on the eve of the game.

And he left the Argentine bloodied from the nose as he careered into an aerial challenge on the half-hour mark.

Messi was quickly back on his feet and into the heart of the action, but it was Philippe Coutinho who came closest to extending Barca’s advantage before the break with a thunderous low shot that De Gea did brilliantly to repel with his feet.

Moments later United could easily have been on level terms, but the hosts’ best chance of the half fell to the wrong man as Marcus Rashford picked out Diogo Dalot only for the Portuguese to completely miscue his header across goal.

However Rashford also failed to make proper contact with his big chance early in the second-half when Ter Stegen could only punch a cross into his path.

The Red Devils have now failed to score and have lost in four of their last six home Champions League games.

“Those statistics are not bright, we cannot defend not scoring goals at home,” added Solskjaer.

“But away from home we beat Juventus, we beat PSG and we have to go to Barcelona and win that one.”

The result could have been worse for Solskjaer’s men as Suarez fired into the side-netting before De Gea used his feet to good effect once more to deny Jordi Alba.

Manila –  The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship  in collaboration with City of Dreams Manila, recently held the ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR Official Kick-Off Press Conference last Tuesday, 9 April at the City of Dreams in Manila.

In attendance were main event competitors, reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion Martin Nguyen and challenger Narantungalag Jadambaa, co-main event participants, reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Yosuke Saruta and challenger Joshua Pacio, as well as Chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, Chatri Sityodtong.

Chatri Sityodtong, Chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, stated: “ONE Championship is back in Manila, and it’s always a pleasure to visit the Philippines. We’re here to celebrate Asia’s greatest cultural treasure — martial arts. We’re not here to sell fights, we’re here to build martial arts heroes who ignite the world with strength, hope, dreams, and inspiration. By telling their stories, we share the true values of martial arts with the world, which will always be our mission. See you all this Friday night for ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR. It’s going to be a fantastic show.”

Martin Nguyen, ONE Featherweight World Champion, stated: “It’s my fourth time competing here in Manila, and I’ve always felt at home here. It’s an honor to share my talent with you all. Thank you to all the fans for the support. Challenging the legend Jadambaa himself, it’s such an honor. I would like to thank ONE Championship for placing their trust in me. I’ll bring a hundred percent into the cage, and god willing, I’ll walk out of the arena still champion.”

Narantungalag Jadambaa, ONE World Title Challenger, stated: “First of all, I would like to thank ONE Championship for the opportunity to compete for the ONE World Title once again. This is not about age, this is about passion. Martial arts is my life and I hold the utmost respect for anyone who has the courage to step inside that cage. I will bring even more courage into the cage this Friday. I respect Martin Nguyen for what he has done for our sport and it is an honor to face him. I will do my best and the best man will walk out of the cage with the title.”

Yosuke Saruta, ONE Strawweight World Champion, stated: “Coming to the Philippines and representing Japan and the Japanese culture, it is such a huge honor for me. I know Joshua Pacio has a lot of fans here, and I respect him as a martial artist. All I can say is that we will both bring our best into the cage this Friday night. It’s going to be an exciting fight, and I plan on getting my hand raised in the end as the victor. Thank you all for having me.”

Joshua Pacio, ONE World Title Challenger, stated: “I would like to thank ONE Championship for giving me another chance to fight for the title. I know the magnitude of this matchup and how important this rematch with Yosuke Saruta is. I wasn’t at my best in that first fight, so I want to go out there and prove that I can do much better. He’s a great fighter, and I have so much respect for him. But I have the hopes and dreams of an entire country on my shoulders, and I can’t let the fans down. I’m coming to regain the belt. It’s going to be a war this Friday.”

ONE Championship has just announced the complete card for ONE: FOR HONOR, set for 3 May at Istora Senayan in the bustling Indonesian capital of Jakarta.

Once again, the absolute best in world-class martial arts talent will storm the ONE Championship ring to showcase their incredible skills. In the main event, ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao of Thailand will defend his title against Jonathan Haggerty of the United Kingdom.

ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao is ready to return to action and defend his World Title against Jonathan Haggerty in the main event of ONE: FOR HONOR.

Over the course of a stellar 25-year career spanning more than 400 bouts, multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion Sam-A has captured titles across several weight classes, and is now known as one of the very best Muay Thai kickboxers of all time.

Born to a family of farmers in Buriram, a province in northeastern Thailand, Sam-A began his competitive Muay Thai career at the young age of 9. Seeking to take his career to the next level, Sam-A moved to Bangkok when he was 15 years old, and he began training at the famed Petchyindee Muay Thai academy before making his debut at the prestigious Rajadamnern and Lumpinee stadiums. His hard work and dedication soon paid off as he blazed a trail in the sport to emerge as a living legend in the ring.

The challenger, Haggerty, is already an accomplished martial artist, despite his relative youth. He began training in Muay Thai at the age of 7 under the watchful eye of his father, John, who was himself an active competitor.

Haggerty quickly racked up multiple accolades in the sport of Muay Thai as an amateur becoming a three-time English Champion, three-time British Champion, and winning a European title as well. As a professional, his resume is still growing, but he has dominated almost everyone he has faced to date, winning almost all of his bouts via knockout while facing the sport’s elite. Now he gets the chance to challenge Muay Thai legend Sam-A Gaiyanghadao for the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Title.

Japanese legend Yushin “Thunder” Okami of Japan is set to make his ONE Championship debut opposite Kiamrian Abbasov of Kyrgyzstan.

Okami is one of the most prolific martial artists to emanate from Japan over the last two decades. With a career that began in 2002, Okami has competed in numerous weight classes — from light heavyweight all the way down to welterweight — in various Japanese promotions including Pride and Pancrase.

A Prime Selection GP Welterweight Champion, Abbasov was raised by a single mother in his hometown of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital city. There, he began his martial arts journey with Greco-Roman wrestling, and later added boxing to his arsenal.

Early in his career, he won two tournament championships, including a one-night tournament in December 2016, where he beat three different men in one night. Today, he is one of Kyrgyzstan’s top martial arts athletes. He is now tasked to welcome Okami to ONE Championship.

A battle between talented grapplers is set to go down at featherweight when Japan’s Tetsuya Yamadameets Russia’s Marat “Cobra” Gafurov.

Yamada is a promising young martial artist with a distinct ability to seek out highlight-reel stoppages. He made his ONE Championship debut in January of 2016 in an extremely high-level wrestling showdown against Eduard Folayang of the Philippines.

A seasoned grappler, most of Yamada’s victories have come by spectacular finish, with the ability to end bouts either by submission or knockout.

Former ONE Featherweight World Champion Gafurov is looking to forge a comeback trail on the way back to World Title contention. The veteran martial artist is a strong and powerful grappler, with the ability to seek out devastating submissions in any situation. Nicknamed “Cobra,” Gafurov’s constricting style has proven difficult to overcome as he has defeated some of the biggest names in ONE Championship including Narantungalag Jadambaa, Martin Nguyen, Ev Ting, and Kazunori Yokota.

Taking on Yamada, Gafurov will be put to the test against a fellow skilled grappler in what should be a technical feast for the fans.

In a ONE Super Series Muay Thai contest, Thailand’s Yodpanomrung Jitmuangnon will take on Tyler Hardcastle of Australia.

Yodpanomrung is considered by Thai boxing pundits as one of the top pound-for-pound Muay Thai practitioners in the world. Having 300 professional bouts under his belt, Yodpanomrung has built a reputation as being an explosive striker with stunning knockout power. He has won numerous championships throughout his career, including the WMC and WPMF World Championship titles.

In a women’s atomweight showdown, Indonesia’s own Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol is looking to bounce back from a slow start in 2019 when she takes on Cambodia’s Nou Srey Pov.

Indonesian national wushu champion Lumban Gaol had an exceptional 2018, competing for a total of six times and going 5-1 on the year. She has emerged as one of Indonesia’s fastest rising stars, having turned in a series of spectacular performances to captivate the local audience.

On the other hand, Nou Srey Pov is a Kun Khmer World Champion with a 91-8-2 record in the discipline. She made her ONE Championship debut last February, defeating the popular Rika Ishige at ONE: CLASH OF LEGENDS. She is now looking for the second victory in her mixed martial arts career.

Making his ONE Championship debut is Thanh Le of the United States who takes on Russia’s Yusup “Maestro” Saadulaev.

Thanh Le sports a professional record of 8-2. A powerful striker, seven of Thanh Le’s victories have come by knockout, and one by submission. A bonafide finisher, he takes on dangerous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Saadulaev in what should be an exciting matchup.

Indonesian mixed martial arts star the “Terminator” Sunoto will also see action. The veteran athlete will face countryman Paul Lumihi, in his ONE Championship debut.

In addition, Chinese martial arts prospect Ayideng Jumayi will go up against former ONE World Title challenger Dae Hwan Kim of South Korea.

Malaysian superstar Keanu Subba, who hones his skills at the renowned Bali MMA in Indonesia, is back in action.

Former MIMMA Featherweight Champion Subba is the younger brother of Gianni Subba, who is one of ONE Championship’s top flyweights. Following in his older brother’s footsteps, Keanu became interested in mixed martial arts in 2005, after watching a reality TV show which centered around the sport.

Today, he is one of the most highly-regarded featherweight prospects in ONE Championship. Since making his promotional debut in October 2015, Subba has stopped several opponents, all in the first round. Subba is tasked to welcome newcomer Ryogo Takahashi of Japan to the promotion.

In a ONE Super Series Muay Thai contest, Japan’s Kenta Yamada will meet Deividas Danyla in an exciting matchup between striking superstars. Yamada is a former WBC Muay Thai Japan Champion who hails from Tokyo.

Danyla is a former IMC Muay Thai World Champion. After great success in the Lithuanian and European scene, where he captured four national and two regional championships, Danyla moved to Thailand in 2017 in search of a greater challenge. He has since faced a host of elite competition in Muay Thai, and proved he has what it takes to be counted amongst the world’s best.

Unbeaten Indonesian mixed martial arts prospect Rudy Agustian makes his highly-anticipated return to ONE Championship opposite Cambodia’s Chan Rothana.

Agustian and Rothana are known as two aggressive offensive innovators, with Agustian coming into the matchup on the heels of three impressive victories, including two submissions. Rothana, on the other hand, is a Kun Khmer champion and a powerful striker with imminent knockout power.

In a ONE Super Series Muay Thai contest, Scottish Muay Thai prodigy Andrew Miller takes on Malaysia’sMohammed “Jordan Boy” Bin Mahmoud who makes a quick turnaround after ONE: A NEW ERA.

In ONE Championship’s Japanese debut, Mohammed impressed with an incredible performance despite dropping a unanimous decision to Cyprus’ Panicos Yusuf. “Jordan Boy” now looks to get back on the winning track by taking on the skilled Miller.

Indonesian rising star Adrian “Papua Badboy” Matheis is a martial artist competing in ONE Championship’s talented strawweight division. He takes on India’s Himanshu Kaushik.

In the ONE: TITLES & TITANS strawweight tournament in August 2016, Matheis defeated both Rustam Hutajulu and Roso Nugroho via scintillating knockouts in one night to be crowned tournament champion. In his most recent outing, Matheis defeated countryman Abdul Aziz Calim via second-round submission.

Kaushik will be looking to use Matheis as a springboard, however. The seven-time Indian Wushu Champion wants to prove he is a top contender, and he can accomplish that by defeating the Indonesian warrior.

Kicking off the action at ONE: FOR HONOR are Indonesian strawweights Guntur and Angelo Bimoadji.
