Former champion Ratchanok Intanon is seeking her third title at the Yonex Sunrise India Open as she faces off old foe He Bingjiao of China in today’s final  in New Delhi.

The world No 8 who claimed the title in this event back in 2013 and 2016 survived a close battle against seventh-seeded Han Yue of China 21-15 19-21 21-18 in the Saturday’s semi-finals.

Seeded fourth this week, the Thai badminton star will make the attempt to end her losing streaks against the world No 7 He (0-4 in head-to-head) since they competed against each other in 2016.

Ratchanok has been in impressive form this season, reaching the finals three times including the Malaysian Masters which she won (beating Carolina Marin in two games)  in January and the German Open (losing to Akane Yamaguchi in three games) earlier this month.

Federer ready for Isner shoot-out for Miami crown

Breaking News March 31, 2019 01:00

By AFP

Roger Federer is gearing up for a Miami Open final shootout with John Isner on Sunday after blowing away young-gun Denis Shapovalov in straight sets.

Federer produced a 6-2, 6-4 masterclass at Hard Rock Stadium to leave up-and-coming star Shapovalov, who grew up idolizing the Swiss, chasing shadows during a difficult first set.

The Swiss was superb in dismantling the 19 year-old’s game, but knows with huge serving Isner lying in wait in what will be the former world number one’s 50th ATP Masters final, the key will be to defuse the reigning Miami Open champion’s monster service game.

Isner used it to great effect in his 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/4) win over Shapovalov’s friend and compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime earlier in the day, smashing down 21 aces. He’ll be looking for more of the same against 20 time Grand Slam champion Federer.

“Playing a big server like John is like being in a penalty shootout in soccer, but I enjoy it,” said number four seed Federer who coped brilliantly with Kevin Anderson’s dangerous serve in the quarter-finals, winning the first set to love.

“Sometimes you go with momentum. Sometimes you go with feel. Sometimes you guess maybe a little bit and sometimes you see it. It’s a combination of all sort of things.

“You just hope that the stars align, that you pick the right side, that he picks the wrong side, that maybe he misses a serve, that you can put him in uncomfortable situations time and time again, and at the end somehow you find a way.”

Federer had no such challenge from Shapovalov, playing his fifth ATP Tour semi-final. Even though the Swiss was standing in his way of a first final, the 19 year-old stressed beforehand that it was a “dream” to take on Federer.

It quickly, however, turned into a nightmare.

The Canadian displayed understandable nerves early on, a struggle with his first serve proving as much in a 10 minute opening game which he eventually won.

Yet it didn’t settle him down and when another horribly loose backhand flew long, Federer pocketed a vital early break and stayed in the driver’s seat.

Shapovalov, who will jump to a career best 20th in the world thanks to this impressive run, enjoyed some much better moments in the second set and looked more relaxed, although the match was never in his hands.

He hit just eight winners in response to Federer’s 30 but will learn from this.

“It’s kind of surreal, being on the court against Roger,”admitted the Canadian who joked the only enjoyable moment for him was the warm up.

“Obviously I wasn’t trying to focus on the fact that it’s him on the other side.

“I was just trying to play as good as I can, but he played an excellent match. I wasn’t able stay at his level. I’m just going to try to learn from this and move forward.”

Federer, assessing his own performance, said he played “very well”.

“I had to because when you let Denis play, he’s got some serious power and he gets rhythm going. He can really put you in uncomfortable situations.”

This was the first time since 2007 that two teenagers have reached an ATP Masters semi-finals and although both suffered disappointing defeats, they leave South Florida with their heads held high.

Auger-Aliassime’s dream run finished with the youngster from Montreal competing confidently in the biggest match of his career even if he will rue the chances that escaped him after being broken while serving for the first and second set.

“Unusual,” Isner called it. “It could have been a little bit of inexperience and maybe a little bit of fatigue, also.”

Despite the disappointment etched all over Auger-Aliassime’s face at the end, his run here will give him great confidence moving forward as he, and Shapovalov, aim to prove their Grand Slam credentials.

The 18-year-old is the youngest-ever male semi-finalist in Miami and only the second qualifier to reach the last four after Guillermo Canas reached the same stage in 2007 before losing to Novak Djokovic in the final.

Auger-Aliassime will also see his ranking jump from 55 to 33 in the world.

“I think I did the best that I could,” he said. “It’s a chance you can’t miss, serving two times for the set, and just — I don’t know. It’s just terrible. The biggest lesson I learned was to stay in the present and believe in yourself.”

World number one Park Sung-hyun fired a six-under par 66 on Friday to seize a share of the halfway lead alongside Thailand’s Thidapa Suwannapura at the LPGA Kia Classic.

South Korea’s Park teed off on 10 at Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad, California, and after two birdies in her first nine holes made a big move with four birdies in the space of five holes after the turn.

“Overall, I’m pretty happy with my play today, especially the bogey-free two days in a row,” said Park, a winner in Singapore last month. “The course is not easy actually. The fairways are pretty narrow and the greens are very soft and line is pretty hard to see for me.”

Thidapa had three birdies on each side to also sign for a 66 and join Park on 10-under 134.

“Those greens are not that easy,” said Thidapa, who is also bogey-free over the first two rounds. “Just play solid and hopefully keep making birdies.”

The leading duo were one stroke in front of overnight leader Chella Choi, who carded a 70, and fellow South Korean Park In-bee, who posted a 67.

“It was a really good day out there,” Park In-bee said. “My putter really worked well. Hit the ball pretty solid last couple days.”

Choi was pleased with a “really good comeback” after two early bogeys.

Australian Minjee Lee, the 2017 winner, carded a 69 to head a group on 137 that also included Colombia’s Mariajo Uribe (69), Spain’s Azahara Munoz (68) and Mexico’s Gaby Lopez (70).

New Delhi –  Australia’s Scott Hend continued his fine form to sign for a bogey-free four-under-par 68 at the halfway stage of the Hero Indian Open on Friday.

The big-hitting Australian compiled a two-day total of seven-under-par 137 to trail American Julian Suri by three shots in tied-fourth place at the US$1.75 million event held at the DLF Golf and Country Club.

Suri, who held a share of the overnight lead, extended his advantage by riding on a hot putter to sign for a second straight 67.

He holds a two-shot edge over South Africa’s George Coetzee (66) and Sweden’s Robert Karlsson (68) in second place.

Hend, who clinched his 10th Asian Tour title in Malaysia last week, put up a solid display of golf from tee to green, only missing one green in regulation.

Thai veteran Prayad Marksaeng rediscovered some of his best form at the Gary Player-designed course after trading six birdies against three bogeys to sign for a 69 and lurk four shots off the pace in sixth place.

Australia’s Daniel Nisbet and India’s Om Prakash Chouhan produced the highlights of the day with their respective aces on the third and fifth holes.

Nisbet found the bottom of the cup with his four-iron from 240 yards while Chouhan made his hole-in-one with a six-iron from 190 yards and earned a a return business class trip to Munich for two nights including a trip to BMW Welt and a BMW DRIVE experience in Munich.

The halfway cut was set at two-over-par 146 with 70 players advancing to the final two rounds.

Dovi tops the Termas shuffle as 21 riders finish Friday within a second

By MotoGP

An incredibly tight field sees Ducati, Yamaha and Honda end the day within 0.165

Championship leader Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati) leads an incredibly tight MotoGP™ field at the end of play on Friday at the Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina, topping a manic shuffle to the timesheets at the end of FP2 as riders pushed to make it into that all-important provisional Q2 graduation zone. And Dovizioso may have ended the day on top once the action was over, but the gap back to P2 was tiny as the Italian was just 0.009 ahead of Independent Team rider Jack Miller (Pramac Racing). It only seemed the get closer from there.

The rain mildly threatening overhead ultimately never came to fruition but the seven minute push for a laptime on fresh rubber made for a spectacular end to the day. Third went to Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) as he headed an incredibly close trio, with LCR Honda Castrol’s Cal Crutchlow just 0.001 off the Spaniard and superstar rookie Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) once again showing some stunning pace to complete the top five. The gap between 2018 Argentina GP winner Crutchlow and the newcomer? Just 0.011.

Just under a tenth was the next gap and that was back to veteran Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), the 2015 winner at the venue, before another infinitesimal 0.010 split him from Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar). FP1 leader Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), who also set the pace throughout much of the second Free Practice session too, was deposed down to P8 by the last minute dash. Sophomores Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) and Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) rounded out a top ten split by less than half a second.

So who’s at risk of missing out on Q2 should the rain come down on Saturday morning? Aprilia Racing Team Gresini’s Andrea Iannone and Aleix Espargaro only just missed out in P11 and P12 respectively, ahead of a somewhat out of position Danilo Petrucci (Mission Winnow Ducati), who crashed in the morning. Rookie duo Francesco Bagnaia (Pramac Racing) and Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) lurk close by, too.

Jorge Lorenzo (Repsol Honda Team), meanwhile, had a tough first day as he comes back from injuries sustained to his ribs in Qatar and the scaphoid broken in pre-season. He was P21 on Day 1 and the final man covered by less than a second on an extremely competitive Friday – nevertheless quite a feat in terms of pace as he fights back to fitness and adapts to his new machine.

Another stunning tight set of timesheets sets us up for a barnstormer of a Saturday in South America, with FP3, FP4 and qualifying to come. Will anyone be able to break into the top ten in the third Free Practice session? They’ll be praying for the weather to hold out when the premier class head out on track at 10:50 local time (GMT-3), before qualifying starts at 15:05.

The Nation Weekend

Fight-night promoters at One Championship have no doubt this weekend’s entertainment is going to be spectacular.

“This is going to be the greatest martial arts card in the entire history of the world,” declared Chatri Sityodtong, chairman and CEO of One Championship.

One: A New Era features former UFC champions Dementrious Johnson and Eddie Alvarez and will take place on Sunday at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.

Chatri Sityodtong, chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, said for the first time four world championship fights and 23 world champions would feature on a single card.

“The whole world should be watching this. Let us unite as the continent of Asia around Asian heroes and Asia’s great cultural treasure,” he added.

Dementrious Johnson, Chatri Sityodtong and Eddie Alvarez

The four world championship fights see One lightweight world champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang of the Philippines up against the challenger, former titleholder Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki of Japan; women’s strawweight champion Xiong Jing Nan of China v Singaporean Angela Lee; middleweight world champion Aung La N Sang of Myanmar facing local contender Ken Hasegawa; and bantamweight world champion Kevin Belingon of the Philippines v Bibiano Fernandes of Brazil.

“We don’t sell fights like every other organisation in the world. We build heroes who ignite the world with hope, strength, dreams and inspiration. As a lifelong martial artist, I want the world to see the true beauty of martial arts,” added Chatri, who is half-Thai and half-Japanese.

At the top of the card, Folayang will defend his belt against “son of the soil” Aoki. At their previous meeting in 2016, Folayang scored a third-round TKO to stun the martial arts world and take the title from his rival. This time around, the Filipino is stepping into his opponent’s backyard but is still predicting victory from what should be an exhilarating main event.

Folayang, who won three SEA Games gold medals (2003, 2005, 2011) and one Asian Games (2006) silver from wushu said: “I am well-prepared for this bout. This rematch is three years in the making. It’s an honour to face Shinya again. I believe this event is going to be explosive. History will be made.”

Aoki, 35, from Shizuoka City, will be attempting to make an impression in his first fight at home since 2015. “I am thankful that One Championship is in my home country. This is a great step forward for martial arts in Japan. This Sunday night, I am confident I can achieve victory and become world hampion once again.”

While he may not be competing for a World Title on Sunday night, Demetrious Johnson knows exactly what’s at stake in a showdown against Yuya “Little Piranha” Wakamatsu.

Johnson is the most dominant world champion in the history of mixed martial arts, but he is more than happy to climb back up the ranks on the global stage in the One flyweight World Grand Prix.

“If you look at all my fights, my world title reign, I’m always going out there looking for the finish – either knocking my opponent out or submitting them. So with this, I’m looking forward to going out there, pushing the pace, and hopefully getting the finish,” said Johnson.

Avenging 11 years ago

Two Thais will also be in action this weekend.

Andy Souwer, Chatri Sityodtong and Yodsanklai Iwe Fairtex

Multiple Muay Thai world champion Yodsanklai Iwe Fairtex will face Holland’s world champion kickboxer Andy Souwer in a super series kickboxing catchweight bout. Yodsanklai, a three-time Lumpini world champion, will be seeking revenge over the Dutchman after losing to him fully 11 years ago.

“I’m looking forward to this opportunity to avenge that previous loss and I get to do it in front of the Japanese fans. I promise to deliver an exciting performance for everyone,” Yodsanklai declared.

Rodtang Jitmuangnon, left, Chatri Sityodtong, and Hakim Hamech

The other Thai on the card is former Omnoi Stadium world champion Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon, who takes on two-time Muay Thai world champion Hakim Hamech of France in a super series Muay Thai flyweight fight.

“To be chosen by One Championship means a lot to me because they believe in my talent as an athlete. I promise that I won’t disappoint the Japanese fans,” said the 21-year-old from Phatthalung.

KIRADECH KEEPS HOPES ALIVE WITH WIN OVER DECHAMBEAU AT WGC-DELL TECHNOLOGIES MATCH PLAY

sports March 29, 2019 16:48

Austin  –  Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat battled to a 2 and 1 win over American Bryon DeChambeau on Thursday to keep alive his hopes at the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play.

After losing a closely-fought opening Group 6 match to Australian Marc Leishman on Wednesday, the 29-year-old Kiradech battled for his survival in the US$10.25 million showpiece at Austin Country Club to secure an important first point that will ensure his final group match against Russell Knox of Scotland remains relevant.

Leishman stayed in control of his own destiny after securing a second 2-up group win over Knox and needs a tie or a win against DeChambeau to progress into the knockout phase. If DeChambeau and Aphibarnrat each win on Friday, they will force a three-man playoff with Leishman to determine who progresses from the group.

Under blustery condition, Kiradech won six holes, five of which with pars and the highlight being an eagle two on the fifth hole where he drove the green and landed five feet of the flag to go 1-up in the match. DeChambeau, a five-time PGA TOUR winner, tied the match twice by winning holes 10 and 12 before Kiradech won successive holes at 13 and 14 which he then closed out DeChambeau on the 17thgreen.

“I don’t think we played our “A” game. Me and Bryson weren’t playing good golf. I think I just made one eagle the whole day. No birdies at all and a couple of bogeys. In match play, it just depends on the day, especially on this golf course which is really difficult. If you put the ball in the wrong position, sometimes it’s impossible to get up and down. Sometimes par is good enough to win,” said Kiradech.

“However, I’m really happy with the way we finished. I got the first point. I was really proud of the way I won the match. But there’s a lot of work that I need to do, and hopefully Bryson will play well tomorrow, and I’ll meet him in the playoff.”

Kiradech, who is the first Thai to hold a PGA TOUR card, is determined to fight to the end in his bid to replicate last year’s successful run where he qualified for the quarterfinals. With winds expected to make conditions tough again on Friday, he knows the key is to keep the ball in play.

“The key today was about hitting greens. The wind is really difficult and it’s not easy to hit it on the greens. You’ve got to keep the ball under the wind and give yourself more chances, hit it in the fairways, that is the big key for this week,” he said

As one in a series of four World Golf Championships events sanctioned and organized by the operational committee of the International Federation of PGA Tours, which includes the Asian Tour, European Tour, Japan Golf Tour, PGA TOUR, PGA Tour of Australasia and Sunshine Tour, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play is one of the most exciting and biggest events on golf’s calendar.

New Delhi – Thailand’s Prom Meesawat opened his campaign with a four-under-par 68 to trail first-round clubhouse leaders Stephen Gallacher of Scotland and American Julian Suri by one shot at the Hero Indian Open on Thursday.

The 34-year-old Thai traded five birdies against one bogey to stay close behind the leading duo who posted matching 67s at the US$1.75 million event staged at the challenging DLF Golf and Country Club.

India’s Shubhankar Sharma,  Australia’s Scott Hend, Thai duo Poom Saksansin and Prayad Marksaeng and Japan’s Masahiro Kawamura stayed two shots off the lead following their rounds of 69.

Starting on the tenth hole, Prom remained patient as he tackled the demanding course, rolling in four birdies before stumbling with his only blemish of the day on the eighth hole.

Hend, who was victorious in Malaysia last week, completed an amazing turnaround for his opening efforts. The big hitting Australian recovered brilliantly with three closing birdies after making a triple bogey on the ninth hole where he found the water hazard twice.

Play was abandoned at 6.40pm local time due to fading light. Three players will return at 7.40am to resume their first round with the second round scheduled to start as planned.

Thailand’s Three Day Royal Charity Event The King’s Cup Elephant Boat Race Kicks Off in Bangkok

The spirit and energy of boat racing returned to Bangkok on Thursday with the arrival of the inaugural King’s Cup Elephant Boat Race & River Festival which is taking place at the banks of Chao Phraya River near Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort.

On land, spectators were treated to an opening spiritual blessing ceremony as well as a celebration of Thai culture with dance performances and traditional drumming. On the water twelve teams were competing for the coveted King’s Cup – teams include the Royal Thai Navy Seals as well as international teams. Each team was paddling a specially commissioned boat decorated with artistic elephant heads rising elegantly above the water, and tails inspired by traditional Thai fish motifs.

Each race takes place across 200m with 4 teams per heat, the first to cross the finish line wins and progresses to Sunday’s grand closing Trophy Ceremony.

The atmosphere on the water and in the stadiums was off to an electric start with the heat between Pilipinas Orient Dragons (Philippines); Dongguan Sheen Fine (China); Pradu Thong Goddess (Royal Thai Navy) and Yutthakarnnawa (Royal Thai Navy Seals) the highlight. The international paddlers fared well but they were no match for Thailand’s best. With less than 6 seconds between each elephant boat, the Royal Navy Seals came out on top taking only 46.68 seconds to paddle 200m. Second spot was the Pradu Thong Goddess (Royal Thai Navy) at 48.11 seconds followed by Dongguan Sheen Fine (China) at 49.14 seconds and finally the Pilipinas Orient Dragons (Philippines) at 52.47 seconds.

While the teams battle it out on the river; entertainment at the riverside festival included the Indoor Rowing Asia Cup Tournament with rowers from 10 countries going head to head. Visitors to the three day event are also treated to luxury champagne tents, vintage car displays, and musical concerts by top Thai artists including Atom, J Jetrin, New Jiew and Singto Numchok. The foodie village is well stocked with a host of pop up food stalls by a selection of Thailand’s top restaurants and Bangkok’s favourite chefs.

Tapping into its conservational expertise, Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas is aiming to raise significant charitable donations through ticket sales that will in turn all be donated to elephant related projects throughout Thailand.

Canadian teen Auger-Aliassime stunned by ATP semi run

sports March 29, 2019 08:23

By AFP

Felix Auger-Aliassime’s brilliant run to the semi-finals of the ATP Miami Open has surprised everyone, including the Canadian teen himself.

“I definitely didn’t expect to win,” the 18-year-old qualifier said after a 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 victory over 13th-ranked Croatian Borna Coric advanced him to Friday’s semi-finals against US defending champion John Isner.

“I felt like I had margin over him, had a bit of an edge. I just felt really comfortable out there from the first balls.”

Away from the ever-brightening spotlight, Auger-Aliassime always had confidence in himself.

“I know I belong here,” he said after coming through the Miami qualifiers.

As Coric was dismantled in the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 event, it was impossible to escape the feeling that it was Auger-Aliassime’s breakthrough moment, his run speaking of a coming of age.

Not only did he become the youngest player to reach the last four in the Miami Open’s 35-year history, but when the new rankings are released next week, Auger-Aliassime will become the first player born in the 2000s to reach the top 50 of the ATP rankings.

There aren’t many miles on his lean frame. Auger-Aliassime looks fresh and hungry and moves with a dynamic game mindful of those by Britain’s Andy Murray and Serbian Novak Djokovic, who also went deep in Miami as teens.

Auger-Aliassime’s father Sam was born in Togo before emigrating to Canada, where he met Felix’s mother Marie, a child psychology teacher.

Sam runs a tennis academy and coached his son until age 13 before the National Training Center in Montreal came calling.

Auger-Aliassime won the 2015 US Open junior title at 15 and knew tennis was the career path for him.

“Since I started walking I was playing because my dad was coaching,” he said.

“Tennis has always been part of my life. I don’t remember a time when it wasn’t. When I started watching Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal on TV, when I was around six years old, I knew this is what I wanted to be.”

Auger-Aliassime served notice of his intent by reaching the final in Rio last month and the piano-playing Montreal native isn’t hitting any bum notes in Miami either.

“I think I’m seeing the long term,” he said. “I’m enjoying every match, because you never know what’s going to happen next.”

– Canadian teens rising –

His meteoric rise comes at a boom time for Canadian tennis. Bianca Andreescu, also 18, won the title in Indian Wells earlier this month.

And 19-year-old Denis Shapovalov, the world number 23 who has reached a Miami quarter-final, is also being tipped for the brightest of futures.

“Everyone is super excited back home,” Auger-Aliassime said. “It’s great to hear all these good comments from them. It puts a lot of belief in tennis in Canada.

“I think all the Canadian players from the young kids to Denis and Bianca and I, there’s a lot of belief right now. It’s great to see.”
