Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is expanding its base with a new range of 34 luxurious Residences by Mandarin Oriental in Barcelona that are scheduled to complete in 2020.

With a prime location at the intersection of Passeig de gracia and Avinguda Diagonal, all apartments will be designed in a contemporary style and provide panoramic views of the city’s landmarks.

Owners will have access to a private lobby, a club lounge, a variety of meeting and entertaining spaces, fitness facilities and a luxury spa suite. A connecting footbridge will lead to an outdoor recreation deck and swimming pool. There will be also high-end dining options and private parking on offer.

“We are delighted to be introducing the first standalone Residences by Mandarin Oriental in Europe. We look forward to bringing the brand’s legendary hospitality to the owners of these prestigious private homes,” said James Riley, group chief executive of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.

The Residences will provide owners with easy access to the city’s leisure, business and cultural attractions. Passeig de Gracia is considered the city’s most exclusive retail street and is also home to some of Barcelona’s most celebrated architecture, including two of Gaudi’s works: Casa Mila and Casa Batllo.

The project is a redevelopment of an existing office building. Barcelona-based OAB, which is the studio of eminent Catalan architect, Carlos Ferrater, has been appointed as lead architect and the interior design is being created by the London -based Muza Lab.

With visitors from China falling off, Taiwan turns its attention to Southeast Asia and Australia

FROM HALAL fried chicken to hot springs hotels with prayer facilities, Taiwan is adapting its traditional tourist draws to woo Muslim visitors as Chinese arrivals dwindle.

Mainland tourist numbers have slid dramatically as China relations deteriorate, with speculation authorities there are turning off the taps to pressure Taiwan’s Beijing-sceptic government.

Taiwan is now looking to boost relations with 16 South and Southeast Asian countries, as well as Australia and New Zealand – what it calls its “southbound policy” – and is seeking more visitors from the region.

That has meant a growing number of tourists from Muslim-majority countries, such as Malaysia and Indonesia. Taiwan welcomed 30 percent more visitors from Southeast Asia in 2017.

Taoism is the prevalent religion in Taiwan, with Muslims making up less than two per cent of the population, but tourists say they are surprised how welcome they feel

“I really like the natural scenery in Taiwan and the people are very nice,” says Ashma Bunlapho, 40, a Muslim tourist from Thailand on a five-day trip with her husband.

She found halal restaurants using Google Maps, including a shop selling beef noodle – a Taiwanese favourite – and felt free to pray where she chose, taking her mat with her to famous nature spots including Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan. Malaysian tourist Dean Idris adds that halal eats are easily accessible as he visits Taipei with his two young children, taking in the zoo, a night market, and a historic district close to the city’s best-known temple.

“I learned that Taiwan, Taipei especially, is actually very Muslim-friendly,” he says, standing outside a mosque in the capital, where he had gone to pray.

Thailand, South Korea and Japan are among Asian nations that have been tapping into the Muslim travel market, which has been fuelled by growth in cheap flights and a booming middle class in countries such as Indonesia.

Fried Chicken Master, a small shop not far from Taipei’s Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall – one of its most famous landmarks – has adapted to the trend, selling a halal version of the snack, which is also a Taiwanese favourite.

“We hope to be able to serve tourists, exchange students, or Muslims living in Taiwan. As Taiwanese we are proud of our food,” says Louis Tsai, a spokesman for Super Qin Group, which owns the shop.

A trip to one of Taiwan’s hot springs resorts tops most tourists’ to-do lists and Gaia Hotel in mountainous Beitou, best-known for its natural pools, provides guest rooms with prayer direction signs and prayer schedules.

Minibars there are alcohol-free and cakes do not include pork-based gelatin. To obtain its halal certification, the hotel kitchen created a separate cooking and dining area.

“Since the number of Chinese tourists has decreased, and Southeast Asia is quite a sizeable market with many Muslims, this is an area we have to actively pursue,” Jack Chang, Gaia’s operations manager, explains.

On a recent visit to Istanbul, Taipei mayor Ko Wen-je met with Turkish lawmakers who want to fund the building of a third mosque in Taipei, according to the city government.

Taiwan is also trialling visa waivers for Thailand, Brunei and the Philippines. It eased visa rules last June for six southbound countries, including Indonesia, India, and Cambodia.

But some doubt whether the growth in Muslim tourism is enough to offset the lost income from the mainland.

Chinese visitor numbers dropped by a fifth last year, and have fallen since Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen came to power in May 2016.

Beijing still sees self-ruling democratic Taiwan as part of its territory and relations have become increasingly tense as Tsai refuses to acknowledge it is part of “one China”.

Salahuding Ma, secretary general of the Chinese Muslim Association, the largest halal certification body in Taiwan, says it is hard for the new wave of tourists to compete with their Chinese counterparts.

“The Chinese have wealth and spend lavishly,” he says.

“If you are talking about Southeast Asia, which countries can even compare?”

Ma says Taiwan would have greater success if it overcame the language barrier by encouraging students from “target countries” to work in the island’s tourism sector.

For Thai visitor Bunlapho, her lack of Chinese and limited English proved an obstacle when trying to find transportation to Taroko National Park on Taiwan’s east coast, famous for its deep gorges and sweeping cliff faces.

“I couldn’t figure out how to get there,” she laments.

“Next time. I’ll come back.”

According to Chinese beliefs, many aspects of people’s lives are determined by the 12 Chinese zodiac signs. Hence, in this Lunar New Year, United States online home-rental service Airbnb has shared several travel destinations suggested for the 12 signs.

Those who fall under the rat sign (1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 and 2008) are recommended to visit South Korea, Canada(https://www.airbnb.com.sg/rooms/5636845), Russia and China.

Meanwhile, those born in the Year of the Ox (1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997 and 2009) may consider traveling to Taiwan, Japan, Australia or Bali, where you can ride the waves on Legian Beach by signing up for a surf lesson by Bang through an Airbnb Experience.

Spain is among destinations suggested for people born under the tiger sign, especially because you can stay in a cave with a garden facing the historical Alhambra in Grenada. Other countries that are recommended for you to visit are South Africa, France and Italy.

If you are born in the Year of the Rabbit (1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999 and 2011) it is recommended to travel to Australia, Turkey or India, where you can learn how to dance Bollywood style with choreographer Gilles.

People with the mythical dragon as their sign, which includes 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988 and 2000, are advised to go to Russia, Thailand, Poland or Denmark.

Among the recommended destinations for people born under the snake sign, those born in 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989 and 2001, are China, Vietnam, the Philippines and Brazil, where you have the chance to discover Rio de Janeiro from the sea and visit famous Brazilian landmarks, such as Copacabana and the Christ the Redeemer statue.

Aside from being an auspicious destination for the ox sign, Australia also suits people born under the goat sign (1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991 and 2003).  Savor the flavors of native Australian foods with a professional chef. Other countries that may bring prosperity to your sign are Singapore, Indonesia and Greece.

People who born in 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992 and 2004 or under monkey sign should travel to Mongolia, Malaysia, Canada or the US and stay in a treehouse.

For roosters (1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993 and 2005), fly to South Korea, Taiwan, Romania and Japan as they can learn calligraphy in the historical Zojoji Temple in Tokyo.

Those who are born in the Year of the Dog (1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994 and 2006) are recommended to take a trip to US where they can stay in a giant Beagle Bed and Breakfast in Idaho. They are also suggested to travel to Australia and Malaysia.

Last, those who fall under the pig sign (1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995 and 2007) are advised to go on a trip to Canada, the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates, where they can try sandboarding.

M Social Singapore, the award-winning lifestyle design boutique hotel nestled along the Singapore River at Robertson Quay, aims to become a new meeting ground for both artists and travellers with the launch next month of its M Social Communities.

M Social is an exciting experiential programme developed by Millennium Hotels and Resorts through its pilot Marketing Innovation Programme, an Singapore Tourism Board (STB) funding initiative, that awards and amplifies marketing campaigns that push the boundaries of innovative marketing and tell a great Singapore story.

M Social Communities aims to incorporate Singapore’s arts scene into the quintessential M Social experience by providing an experiential setting for local creatives and artisans who are deeply rooted in their communities, to share their craft with visitors from around the world. Art, design and technology have always been the cornerstones of the M Social brand identity. Through this programme, M Social Singapore encourages guests to “discover yourself” through the unique cultural characteristics of Singapore’s diverse creative community.

Beginning with the programme’s launch on March 2, the hotel’s social calendar will showcase a curated line-up of local craftsmen and creatives, each featured for two-week instalments that include exhibitions, talks and workshops. Through a variety of events, overseas guests and members of the public can interact with the works of Singapore’s most creative individuals, meet them in person and learn about their inspirations and processes first-hand, thereby enriching their Singapore experience with new concepts, stories and ideas.

From music and photography, to fashion and crafts, M Social Communities’ diverse spectrum of creative disciplines and shared social experiences offers exciting opportunities for guests to integrate and engage with the local community.

“We believe in making real-life connections in an increasingly digitised world, and this project is our way of working with local creatives to bring authentic, home-grown experiences directly to our guests. We hope to promote cross-learning and idea-sharing between Singapore’s artistic community and our guests from around the world, enabling both groups to learn and grow from each other’s experiences,” said Lee Richards, vice president of operations, South East Asia, Millennium Hotels and Resorts.

“We are pleased to support the M Social Communities campaign under STB’s pilot Marketing Innovation Programme. Theirs is a promising idea that will enable guests to share in the passion and pride that fuels artists and their work, and profiles Singapore as a destination where visitors can deepen and share their passions,” added Jacqueline Ng, director, marketing partnerships and planning of STB.

The Shanghai Hospitality Design & Supplies Expo (HDE) taking place at Shanghai New International Expo Centre from April 26 to 29 has an added component this year – the 2018 Hotel Plus Mockup Room Show which, as the name implies, will display several well-designed hotel rooms, along with high-end boutique hotels.

“China’s hotel industry is still booming and diversifying. The HDE provides a platform for hotel professionals to understand the market status quo and think about future developments,” said Mark Lu, Deputy General Manager of UBM Sinoexpo, the organiser.

Many domestic and foreign hotel groups will use the Mockup Room Show to introduce their new brands including Holiday Inn Express, a mid-priced hotel chain within the InterContinental Hotels Group family.

As an express hotel, it focuses on offering limited services at a reasonable price. Standard amenities lean toward the convenient and practical, which cater to business travellers and short-term stays. There are around 2,500 Holiday Inn Express hotels featuring over 250,000 rooms and 740 hotels under construction worldwide.

In 2016, InterContinental Hotels Group launched a new franchise model for its Holiday Inn Express brand in China. The new model, called Franchise Plus, is specifically tailored for the Chinese market and, the company claims, providing owners with all of the benefits of operating a franchise model, but with additional benefits and features from IHG’s managed model.

In 2014, New Century Hotel Group was awarded the Top 60 Hotel Groups in China and ranked 27th among global hotel groups. The company manages more than 260 hotels and has more than 60,000 guest rooms across China.

New Century Hotel Group now covers numerous business and tourist cities and regions across China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui, as well as Frankfurt, Germany and Eindhoven, Holland. New Century Hotel Group provides guests with service that perfectly integrates oriental culture and international standards.

Fairfield by Marriott is a moderate selected business brand of hotels that creates flexible business space for the new generation of business people with the pursuit of efficiency and the quality of life.

Fairfield is Marriott’s second largest brand and is growing fast. It’s currently present in United States, Canada, Mexico and India, with more than 800 operating hotels. Fairfield strives to become the world leader in mid-scale hotel segment.

Every year, HDE invites the most influential hotel management companies and star designers to present well-designed display rooms of hotels and commercial properties, including InterContinental Hotels, Starwood, Hilton, Marriott International, Wyndham, BTG Hotels, New Century Hotel, Greenland International Hotels Group, Shimao, Huazhu Hotels Group, Eastern Crown, Wanda Hotels & Resorts, Jinling Hotel, Dossen International Group, Fairfield by Marriott and design institutes like Studio HBA, Woods Bagot, James TU , ICDL, Ling Zida, Cathy Wang, Kim Huang, Italy WT and Hong Kong DOMO.

The show has been held for six years and has proved popular with real estate developers, investors, owners, hotel management groups and designers.

Hong Kong sets a vibrant example for celebrations in the Year of the Dog by hosting an international night parade, flower markets and enormous outdoor carnivals to mark this momentous changing of the guard.

Local and international performers will come together for a rocking night of entertainment at the annual International Chinese New Year Night Parade. Named one of the world’s best events, this world-class spectacle will be held on Friday (February 16). Watch colourful floats sail past and enjoy lively performances with thousands of other spectators along Tsim Sha Tsui’s main streets, while soaking in the electric, buzzing atmosphere.

Further out in the city, the track comes alive at the Sha Tin Racecourse for the Chinese New Year Raceday on February 18. Horseracing is a British colonial legacy embraced enthusiastically by the local population, and the Hong Kong races have the highest turnover in the world. For the very first race of the Year of the Dog, thousands of Hongkongers and visitors will flock to the racecourse for an exciting, fun-filled New Year programme, complete with live entertainment and activity booths.

Adding to the festivities is the Great European Carnival at the Central Harbourfront Event Space, which will be transformed into a fun-filled outdoor amusement park from December to February. Take a ride on the giant swing carousel, try your luck at a games booth, and enjoy a circus performance.

Every Chinese New Year, the Che Kung Temple is awash in a sea of colourful spinning “wheels of fortune” decorations that dance along with the breeze – a breath-taking sight to behold. It’s famed military-commander-turned-deity Che Kung’s birthday, which happens to fall on the second day of Chinese New Year, making the celebrations at the Che Kung Temple a doubly auspicious affair. Join thousands of well-wishers as they pay their respects to Che Kung and celebrate the New Year all at once.

The Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees are another popular destination for Hongkongers during the New Year. Located in Lam Tsuen Village in Tai Po, the original trees were believed to bring good fortune, and villagers would toss joss papers into their branches in the hope their wishes would come true. Every Chinese New Year, the village is crowded with overwhelming requests for luck from visitors from all over the city.

Also worth the trip are the colourful Flower Markets, which are packed to the brim with everything you need for Chinese New Year, from traditional decorations, souvenirs and delicious treats to vivid and exotic blooms. Various “lucky plants” carry their own auspicious omens: for instance, kumquats represent “wealth”, and peach blossoms symbolise “romance” and “longevity”.

Poon Choi — or one-pot casseroles — are a hallmark of traditional village dining culture, and are especially prevalent during Chinese New Year. Made from layering different types of ingredients, from meat and poultry to seafood and vegetables, on top of each other in a giant pot or basin, Poon Choi is a heart-warming communal dish that is perfect for big groups and celebrations. Visitors can sample this distinct dish at select restaurants across the city.

There are also plenty of auspicious-sounding ingredients in Cantonese cuisine that make perfect New Year dishes. For instance, tongyuen dumplings, which sound similar to the word “reunion” in Cantonese, symbolise the coming together of family and make for an ideal dessert during this happy time. Dried oysters (“ho si” in Cantonese) are phonetically reminiscent of “good business”, and are especially popular with Hong Kong entrepreneurs. Glutinous rice cake or pudding (“neen go” in Cantonese) sounds like “tall year”, which can be roughly translated as “reaching higher skies each year”.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) announced Osaka as the first scheduled destination for its new Boeing 787-10 fleet with services expected to begin as early as May.

SIA will be the world’s first airline to operate the 787-10. SIA has 49 Boeing 787-10s on firm order, with the first aircraft due for delivery from Boeing’s North Charleston, South Carolina production facility in March.

Prior to the introduction of regular services to Osaka, the 787-10s will be operated on selected Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur flights for crew training purposes.

SIA will also debut its highly-anticipated new regional cabin products on its 787-10s, fitted with 337 seats in two classes, with 36 seats in Business Class and 301 seats in Economy Class.

“We are honoured to be the first to fly the highly advanced Boeing 787-10. It will be a key element of SIA’s overall growth strategy, enabling us to expand our network reach and strengthen our operations,” said Singapore Airlines Senior Vice President Marketing Planning, Tan Kai Ping.

“The introduction of our new regional cabin products on the 787-10s is part of our commitment to continuous product innovation and leadership, to enhance the premium travel experience for our customers.”

Measuring 68 metres in length, the 787-10 is the longest variant of Boeing’s Dreamliner range of aircraft, which are constructed using technologically advanced lightweight composite materials.

In addition to the 49 firm orders for 787-10s, the Airline has a firm order with Boeing for 20 777-9s, which are due for delivery from the 2021/22 financial year.
