Indonesia announces surprise bid for 2032 Olympics

Indonesia unveiled surprise plans to bid for the 2032 Olympics on Saturday as it rides high from its successful staging of the Asian Games.

President Joko Widodo revealed Indonesia’s intentions after talks with Olympics chief Thomas Bach and Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, head of the Olympic Council of Asia.

The announcement came on the penultimate day of the two-week, 40-sport Asian Games, the biggest sporting event in Indonesia’s history.

“Indonesia has planned to immediately register itself as a candidate for the 2032 Olympics host,” Widodo said.

“With our experience in hosting this 18th Asian Games we, Indonesia, believe that we can and are capable to be a host for bigger events,” he added.

Bach, who is expected to attend Sunday’s closing ceremony, welcomed the announcement and said he was impressed at the Asian Games.

“I could congratulate the president on the great success of the Asian Games which is very impressive,” said Bach.

“Therefore the IOC really appreciates the candidature of Indonesia for the Olympic Games in 2032,” he added.

Indonesia’s announcement reflects the growing clout and resources of countries in Asia, which is hosting three Olympics within the space of four years.

After this year’s Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Tokyo is holding the 2020 Summer Games and Beijing will host the winter edition in 2022 — becoming the first city to organise both the summer and winter Games.

The 2032 Olympics are the next Summer Games up for grabs as following Tokyo 2020, Paris will host in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028.

Indonesia stepped in at the last minute to host the Asian Games, which with 17,000 athletes and officials is similar to the Olympics in size.

Despite only having four years to prepare, after original host Vietnam pulled out over financial concerns in 2014, the venues were finished on time and any problems proved to be minor.

Ticketing was one major headache for organisers, along with Jakarta’s notorious traffic, while some athletes baulked at competing in the capital city’s unhealthy levels of air pollution.

The Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, a port city on Sumatra island, featured 40 sports — seven more than the Tokyo 2020 programme, including the full Olympic roster.

Thailand claimed the fourth gold medal from the Asian Games sepak takraw competition on Saturday after the women’s quadrant team ousted Vietnam 2-0 in the final round in Palembang.

Spearheaded by the highly experienced Payom Srihongsa and the powerful Masaya Duangsri, Thailand won in straight sets 21-8 21-10 to capture the 11th gold medal for the Kingdom in the 18th Games.

The sepak takraw team have won all events they entered including the men’s and women’s regu teams and the men’s team doubles.

Thailand have won 26 out of 39 gold medals from Asian Games sepak takraw competition.

For Payom, she has won five gold medals from four Asian Games (2002, 2010, 2014 and 2018).

Thai ‘dwarf giant’ boxer surpasses Mayweather record with 51st win

Thai boxer Wanheng Menayothin grabbed his 51st straight victory Wednesday in a long but lop-sided bout against a fighter from the Philippines, defending his WBC title and surpassing the undefeated record of boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The 105-pound minimumweight champion, nicknamed the “dwarf giant” for his compact build and heavy hitting style, won on points after a bruising 12 rounds against Pedro Taduran in the Thai city of Nakhon Sawan .

Wanheng started strong, landing several hard rights in the early rounds that seemed to daze Taduran and signal a quick route.

But the 21-year-old southpaw from the Philippines lived up to his alias “Rattle Snake”, enduring the abuse and biting back in the fifth round with a flurry of punches.

The brief comeback was put down as Wanheng kept his composure in the second half of the bout, delivering clean hits that left Taduran visibly tired.

Wanheng, 32, shot to unlikely fighting fame in May when he dispatched Panamanian Leroy Estrada, equaling “Money” Mayweather’s win streak.

All three judges scored in his favour after the final round.

Wanheng’s record-busting quest has generated buzz in Thailand and in boxing media outlets.

But it has also been shrugged off as a statistical quirk because of the two very different careers of the famous, flashy American and the soft-spoken Thai.

Wanheng has fought undistinguished rivals on home turf while Mayweather defeated some of the sport’s all-time greats including Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya.

Mayweather’s fights also come with huge purses, like the $100 million on offer when he was teased from retirement last year to take on MMA star Conor McGregor.

Wanheng’s legal name is Chayaphon Moonsri but he also fights under the alias “Five-Star Grilled Chicken” due to a sponsorship deal with a Thai food company.

His latest win brings him level with Mexican flyweight Ricardo Lopez, who retired with 51 wins, one draw and no losses.

The ride of his life Cyclist Jai lifts spirits after near-decimation in boxing ring

Unfancied Thai-Australian Jai Angsuthasawit captured the long-awaited 10th Asian Games gold medal for Thailand after he crossed the finish line first in the men’s cycling keirin final at the Jakarta International Velodrome on Friday.

On a day that Thai hopes were shattered with three male boxers losing their semi-final bouts, the 23-year-old cyclist came out of nowhere to lift the Kingdom’s spirits fully five days after skeet shooter Sutiya Jiewchaloemmmit won the ninth and last of the country’s golds.

Jai, or TJ, suddenly sprinted past Japanese Yudai Nitta in just a fraction of second to finish in 10.009 seconds, just 0.003 ahead on the line.

“I was confident I would medal. But I wasn’t sure that I’d win,” said Jai, who had to compete in the repechages for a spot in the final after failing to get through the morning’s qualifying round.

“I saved a lot of energy following the Japanese guy and made my move at the right time. I’m so proud to make this history for Thailand,” added Jai after his biggest and most surprising career win. He finished ninth in the keirin at the Asian Championships in Malaysia earlier this year.

Jia whose favourite Thai food is green curry sets his next target in the World Championships and in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Jai’s triumph, the first ever for Thailand in keirin, underlined the surprise success of the Thai Cycling Association, which achieved its target in Indonesia, claiming one gold, two silvers from mountain bike and BMX, and three bronzes from the mountain bike and road events.

Earlier, three Thai boxers all suffered semi-final losses at the hands of Uzbek fighters.

Flyweight Yuttapong Thongdee had no match for the aggressive and quick-punching former World Championships bronze medallist Rogen Ladon of the Philippines, who trounced him 5-0.

Lightweight Rujakran Juntrong was then bombarded by a series of rapid punches by Shunkor Abdurasulov of Uzbekistan and lost the battle of the southpaws, also a 5-0 unanimous decision.

Things got even worse as welterweight Saylom Ardee, a quarter-finalist at the Rio Olympics, succumbed 4-1 to yet another Uzbek, Bobo Usmon Baturov.

Saylom, 32, from Khon Kaen, did at least win his first medal in four attempts as he waved farewell to the Asian Games.

Sudaporn Seesondee (red)

It was left to one of Thailand’s female fighters, Sudaporn Seesondee, to save the nation’s blushes, outclassing home fighter Huswatun Dasanah 5-0. She will face South Korean Oh Yeonji in the final on Saturday.

In the evening’s session, defending light welterwight champion Wuttichai Masuk was dethroned by old foe Chinzorig Baatarsukh of Mongolia 2-3 while Nilawan Techasuep lost to Yin Junhua of China 0-5 in women’s featherweight.

In sepak takraw, the women’s quadrant team lived up to expectations as they stormed into the final following a 2-0 win over Laos. Thailand will play Vietnam who ousted host Indonesia 2-1 in Saturday’s final.

In sailing, Thailand won two bronzes, in the 49er FX women and 470 men, plus one bronze, in the windsurfing women’s RSX.

Thailand stun South Korea to win at least Asiad silver

Jakarta – Thailand rewrote a new chapter of volleyball history after stunning title-holders Korea in pulsating four-setter to advance to the Asian Games final for the first time in 56 years.

Securing a place in the final has earned Thailand at least a maiden silver medal they have never won since the Asiad women’s volleyball competition debut in 1962 in Jakarta. Thailand have yet lost to any rival heading to the Friday’s semi-final clash against the Koreans, powered by scoring machine Kim Yeon-Koung. Against the formidable rivals who beat them 3-1 in this year’s VNL, the Thai players were on red-hot form from the first whistle in the first set, which turned out to be one-way traffic.

Thailand captured the comfortable set 25-15. With the win in their sails in the second set, Thailand proved once again a well-oiled machine as Pleumjit, Wilavan and Onuma Sittirak yielded crucial points for the team’s 25-20 victory. Going down two sets, the Koreans made a promising start in the third set, with Kim unleashing a barrage of fierce blows to thrash the errors-strewn Thais 25-20 to reduce the margin to 1-2. In the fourth set, the injury-prone Thailand, with powerful hitter Chatchu-on Moksri sidelined with her left ankle sprain and Ajcharaporn Kongyot unable to move easily with her minor right knee injury, tried to claw back into the game.

Nonetheless, the Koreans stayed in front with a 5-point clear at 6-11. With Wilavan Apinyapong and Pleumjit Thinkaow orchestrating their defence, Thailand improved their fortunes to trail the tough rivals with just two points behind at 18-20.

Despite a strong challenge from Korea, Thailand performed well to seal the deal 25-22. It is the first time that Thailand have made it this far in the Asian Games. At the previous edition in Incheon, Korea four years ago, Thailand took a maiden bronze medal after beating Japan in the third-place playoff. In the Sunday’s final showdown, Thailand will go up against the winners between world No.1 and Rio Games champions China and Asian winners Japan.

Marina Alex stormed into the lead at the Cambia Portland Classic on Thursday, equalling the course record with a 10-under-par 62 on a day of low scoring in Oregon.

The 28-year-old from New Jersey, still chasing a first tournament win after six seasons on the LPGA Tour, took advantage of perfect conditions Columbia Edgewater Country Club to produce a flawless round.

Alex reeled off 10 birdies and eight pars in a superb display which saw her close with four consecutive birdies down the stretch to take her to 10 under.

“I just started hitting it really well and just kept making great rolls on my putts on the back nine,” Alex said. “It just turned out to be a great day.

Alex benefitted from the expertise of veteran caddy Travis Wilson, who last year worked the bag for the winner of this event, Stacy Lewis, who is currently on maternity leave from golf.

“It’s been a blast,” Alex said of her link-up with Wilson.

“The timing was great. He wanted to work a couple more events before the season ended and I was looking and Trav is awesome, so much fun, really lighthearted, so we’re having a great time.”

But Alex, who has posted three top 10 finishes this season, will be looking nervously over her shoulder at the chasing pack on Friday.

Her pursuers are led by Canadian star Brooke Henderson, who reproduced the sparkling form that fired her to victory in the Canadian Open last weekend with an eight-under-par 64.

Henderson started slowly with five straight pars before a trio of birdies on the 6th, 7th and 8th holes kick-started her round.

She then reeled off five more birdies in her closing six holes on the back nine — including a birdie on the last — to close to within two of the lead.

She joined Australia’s Minjee Lee in a tie for second place on eight under.

Lee, who teed off on the 10th, might have finished closer to Alex had it not been for a bogey on her 18th hole, the only blemish in an otherwise flawless round that included nine birdies.

The 22-year-old from Perth made a sensational start, unfurling five straight birdies in her opening five holes in a dazzling early charge.

“I think it was a combination of everything,” Lee said. “Most of the day I struck it pretty well with my iron shots. I had pretty good control of the yardages. And I hit some solid putts.”

Robynn Ree was a further shot back after a seven-under-par 65. Ree missed the chance to go level with Lee on eight under after bogeying her last.

England’s Georgia Hall was four shots off the lead after a roller coaster six-under-par 66 which included nine birdies, three bogeys and six pars. Australia’s Su Oh and Katherine Perry of the United States were also at six under.

Roger Federer on Thursday set-up a US Open third round clash against Nick Kyrgios who found himself at the centre of an impartiality row after an umpire climbed down from his chair to tell him: “I want to help you”.

Second seed and five-time champion Federer, 37, made it 18 wins in 18 second round appearances in New York by seeing off error-plagued Frenchman Benoit Paire 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.

“I think it’s always tricky against Benoit, never quite the same point. Sometimes he plays very deep in the court, then he plays up in the court,” said Federer.

Also going through were Wimbledon champion and two-time US Open winner Novak Djokovic as well as Maria Sharapova, the 2006 champion in New York.

However, women’s second seed Caroline Wozniacki was knocked out by Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine.

Kyrgios reached the third round by seeing off France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3, 6-0.

The match created a huge storm after respected umpire Mohamed Lahyani lost patience with the under-performing 30th seed and climbed down from his chair to tell the Australian, trailing by a set and 3-0, to try harder.

“I want to help you,” Lahyani could be heard saying. “This isn’t you. I know that. You are great for tennis.”

A furious Herbert said that Lahyani had over-stepped the mark.

“The umpire doesn’t have to talk to him at all. The only thing he can tell him is pay attention, because if you continue like this, I’m going to give you a warning,” said the 27-year-old,

“They can tell him from the chair. He doesn’t need to go down. He doesn’t need to say the words he said on the video. That is not his job. I don’t think he’s a coach, he’s an umpire.”

Kyrgios, however, played down the incident.

“He said he liked me. I’m not sure if that was encouragement,” said the Australian who nevertheless won 19 of the last 25 games following Lahyani’s unprecedented intervention.

“He just said that it’s not a good look. I know what I was doing out there wasn’t good.”

– Two-point penalty –

Novak Djokovic of Serbia

US Open chiefs didn’t help matters by claiming Lahyani was forced to step from his chair as the crowd noise meant that Kyrgios could not hear him.

“Lahyani was concerned that Kyrgios might need medical attention,” said tournament referee Brian Earley.

“He also informed Kyrgios that if his seeming lack of interest in the match continued, that as the chair umpire, he would need to take action.”

Djokovic downed Tennys Sandgren of the United States 6-1, 6-3, 6-7 (2/7), 6-2.

“I thought I played very well for the first two and a half sets and then I just lost it mentally. I got pissed off,” said 2011 and 2015 champion Djokovic.

Next up for sixth seed Djokovic is Richard Gasquet of France who he has beaten 12 times in 13 meetings.

German third seed Alexander Zverev made the third round for the first time in four tries after a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory over lucky loser Nicolas Mahut.

Australian Open champion Wozniacki went down 6-4, 6-2 to world number 36 Tsurenko who claimed a second top 10 win this month having also defeated Garbine Muguruza in Cincinnati.

“She played the game I should have played,” said two-time runner-up Wozniacki who has endured a Grand Slam letdown since winning in Australia.

She lost in the fourth round at Roland Garros and exited in the second round at Wimbledon.

She follows top seed Simona Halep, a first round loser, out of the tournament.

Sharapova took her night time record at the tournament to 21 wins in 21 matches with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Sorana Cirstea of Romania.

The Russian, who committed 33 unforced errors, next faces 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber kept her bid for a second US Open title on track, outlasting Sweden’s Johanna Larsson 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

Kerber will next take on Dominika Cibulkova after the Slovakian beat Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-4 despite being docked two points for returning late from a heat break.

Belarus 26th seed Aryna Sabalenka continued her red-hot summer by seeing off 2010 runner-up Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 7-6 (9/7).

Sabalenka, who won the New Haven tournament last week and reached the semi-finals in Cincinnati, has made the third round of a Slam for the first time.

Maria Sharapova thwarted a second-set comeback bid by Sorana Cirstea, beating the Romanian 6-2, 7-5 on Thursday to reach the third round of the US Open.

Sharapova, the 2006 champion at Flushing Meadows, coughed up 10 double faults as she got off to a slow start on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

But she improved to 21-0 in night matches at the tournament — recovering from a break down in the second set to finish it off in straight sets after the clock had ticked past midnight.

“You’ve got to be crazy to be here after midnight,” she said, giving the fans who stayed a nod of appreciation.

Sharapova could have worked even later, but with Cirstea two points from forcing a third set Sharapova clawed back a break, and broke again in the final game to seal the win.

“There’s a saying we use a lot: It’s not how you start it’s how you finish,” she said.

The five-time Grand Slam winner booked a meeting with former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner over American Taylor Townsend.

“It only gets tougher from here,” said Sharapova, the 22nd seed.

“Being seeded in the 20s you know you’re going to get tough draws. You know you’re going to play Grand Slam champions.

“She’s a competitor, a great opponent. I look forward to it.”
