Salah in diving storm as Liverpool win at Palace

Mohamed Salah was engulfed in a diving storm as the Liverpool star won the controversial penalty that inspired their 2-0 win over 10-man Crystal Palace on Monday.

Salah was accused of diving by Palace when he tumbled in the penalty area late in the first half at Selhurst Park.

Referee Michael Oliver awarded a spot-kick for Mamadou Sakho’s challenge on the Egypt winger and James Milner converted the penalty.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, working for Sky Sports, claimed it was a dive, saying: “A lot of people won’t like it. If it’s against you, you’ll think it’s soft.

“It is a theatrical fall which we’ve seen a lot of players do.”

Adding insult to injury for Palace, Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off in the second half for bringing down Salah as he raced clear.

Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, Jurgen Klopp’s side made sure of extending their 100 percent start to the Premier League season thanks to Sadio Mane’s goal in stoppage-time.

Palace boss Roy Hodgson was furious with the penalty, saying: “My frustration is I don’t think that’s a penalty. It’s cause for anger and disappointment.

“I’ve been in football a long time. If that’s a penalty the game has changed beyond all recognition.

“Sakho is a defender and he has to try and defend.

“There is no way he is looking to foul the player. Liverpool didn’t deserve to be leading.”

Klopp side-stepped the diving row, claiming he hadn’t seen the incident clearly.

“I didn’t ask Mo about that. I didn’t see it. It looked like it was (a penalty), but I have no idea,” he said.

After Manchester City’s swaggering demolition of Huddersfield on Sunday, it was important for Liverpool to keep pace with the champions, even at this early stage of the season.

This was a statement win for Klopp’s team, installed as City’s most likely challengers, and they move into second place after building on last weekend’s rout of West Ham.

But Klopp refused to talk up Liverpool’s title chances.

“I am not interested in sending statements to Manchester City or anyone else. I want to win football games,” he said.

“I couldn’t care less really. We are not in a race with other Premier League teams each weekend.”

Right from the start, Salah was in the thick of the action when he surged onto Naby Keita’s long pass, but the Egyptian’s chip sailed high over the bar.

Andros Townsend came within inches of giving Palace the lead against the run of play when he cut in from the right flank and unleashed a superb 25-yard strike that cannoned off the crossbar.

– ‘Cheat’ chants –

Klopp’s men finally made the breakthrough just seconds before half-time.

Roberto Firmino’s pass found Salah just inside the Palace area and when Sakho caught him with an out-stretched leg, the Egyptian’s slightly delayed tumble didn’t dissuade Oliver from giving the penalty.

Salah has previous for diving and incensed Palace fans were quick to aim “cheat” chants at him, but there appeared just enough contact to warrant the spot-kick.

Milner, ignoring the sound and fury, nervelessly sent Wayne Hennessey the wrong way with his spot-kick.

After Wilfried Zaha’s run earned a second-half free-kick in a dangerous position, Palace captain Luka Milivojevic whipped the set-piece goalwards, only for Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker to make a superb save low to his left.

Salah didn’t tire despite his prodigious work-rate and it was his blistering break that induced the lunge from Wan-Bissaka which triggered his red card.

The young full-back, who had been left alone as the last line of defence, hardly made contact with Salah, but again Oliver ruled in Liverpool’s favour.

As Palace threw men forward in the final moments, Senegal winger Mane put the result beyond doubt when he sprinted clear, rounded Hennessey and slotted home.

“In these moments the fuel is really low and maybe the players need a bit of help from an angry manager — ‘run or I will kill you’ — and they did that,” Klopp smiled.

Japan go from prostitutes to podium at Asian Games

Teenager Rikako Ikee spearheaded a golden night for Japan’s swimmers on Monday after the expulsion of four basketball players for using prostitutes rocked the Japanese team at the Asian Games.

Ikee, 18, won the women’s 100m freestyle and the 50m butterfly, Kanako Watanabe took women’s 200m breaststroke gold and Japan’s men beat Sun Yang’s China in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Sun, China’s fearsome triple Olympic champion, won the Games’ inaugural 800m freestyle title but Japan still outshone their fierce Asian swimming rivals by four gold medals to three.

It provided a positive end to the day for Japan, who will host the next Olympics in 2020, after the four basketball players were caught paying for sex in a Jakarta red light district.

Yuya Nagayoshi, Takuya Hashimoto, Takuma Sato and Keita Imamura were spotted in the area wearing team jerseys and “paid for the services of prostitutes”, chef de mission Yasuhiro Yamashita said, according to Kyodo news agency.

“I just feel a sense of shame,” Japan’s chef de mission Yasuhiro Yamashita told reporters. “We deeply apologise and intend to give the athletes thorough guidance from now on.”

Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah, president of the Olympic Council of Asia, the Games’ governing body, said the incident would serve as a warning to other athletes.

“At the end of the day, representing your country isn’t only about winning medals,” he said.

– Bollywood epic –

Elsewhere on day two, Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min scored the only goal as South Korea beat Kyrgyzstan 1-0 to reach the last 16 in the men’s football.

Son, who needs Asiad gold to be granted an exemption from his 21-month compulsory military service, volleyed the winner in the 63rd minute to set up a knock-out match with Iran.

In front of noisy crowds at the badminton, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting upset Kidambi Srikanth 23-21, 20-22, 21-10 as Indonesia beat India 3-1 to set up a men’s team semi-final against Japan.

Indonesia’s women will also face Japan in the badminton semi-finals after their 3-1 victory over South Korea. The winner will play China or Thailand in the final.

Indonesia also had a double success in the mountain biking competition when Tiara Andini Prastika won the women’s downhill and Khoiful Mukhib grabbed the men’s gold medal.

China’s Yang Haoran and Zhao Ruozhu were crowned the men’s and women’s 10m air rifle champions, both with Games record scores, and their team-mate Zhang Xinqiu jumped for joy when she edged South Korea’s Kang Gee-eun to win the women’s trap.

“I felt like all my hard work had finally paid off,” she said with a beaming smile. “I was so excited and emotional.”

North Korea won their first two gold medals of the Games when former Olympic champion Om Yun Chol lifted a total of 287kg in the men’s 56kg category and Ri Song Gum won the women’s 48kg.

And Vinesh Phogat became India’s first women’s wrestling champion at the Asian Games to extend a family legacy in the sport which was immortalised in a celebrated Bollywood film.

Phogat outclassed Japan’s Yuki Irie 6-2 to win the 50kg final in Jakarta and was then hoisted on the shoulders of team staff draped in the Indian flag.

The 23-year-old is a cousin of former Commonwealth champions Geeta and Babita Kumari Phogat, whose rise from obscurity to wrestling fame was captured in 2016’s ‘Dangal’, an international hit.

Lin Chaopan won the men’s all-around gymnastics title as China reached 15 gold medals late by the end of day two, ahead of Japan on eight and South Korea’s five.

Additional 25 cards and positioning at stake in upcoming Web.com Tour Finals

NORTH PLAINS, Oregon – The first 25 of 50 available PGA TOUR membership cards for the 2018-19 season were secured on Sunday at the Web.com Tour’s final Regular Season event, the WinCo Foods Portland Open presented by Kraft-Heinz, contested on the Witch Hollow Course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.

South Korea’s Sungjae Im, who has led the money list each week this year after winning the season-opening Bahamas Great Exuma Classic at Sandals Emerald Bay, posted rounds of 65-66-68-67—266 (18-under) to win by four shots over John Chin. The $144,000 first-place check pushed Im to $534,325 in earnings and allowed him to join Martin Trainer as the only players on Tour to win twice in 2018.

The 20-year-old Im, along with the other 24 card earners, will carry over earnings to the Web.com Tour Finals, where positions on the priority ranking list, used to set PGA TOUR fields each week, will be finalized.

An additional 25 cards will be awarded following the conclusion of the four-event Finals, which begin next week in Columbus, Ohio, with the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship. The final three events consist of the DAP Championship (August 30-2), Albertsons Boise Open presented by Kraft Nabisco (Sept. 13-16) and Web.com Tour Championship (Sept. 20-23). The second set of 25 cards will be based on money earned solely in the Finals.

The battle for the 25th and final card came down to rookies Hank Lebioda and Kevin Dougherty, with Lebioda securing the last spot by $1,923.

Lebioda finished up a final-round 71 nearly two hours before Dougherty finished, and was forced to wait and watch the projected money list to see what his fate would be.

Dougherty birdied the par-4 17th and had to birdie the par-5 18th to earn his PGA TOUR card, but fell to his knees in disbelief as his birdie chip from just short of the green narrowly missed going in. The closing par left the former Oklahoma State golfer at No. 26 on the money list, and in turn vaulted Lebioda to the TOUR this fall.

Son keeps eye on Spurs as he chases precious Asian gold

Son Heung-min said he’s cheering on his Spurs team-mates in the Premier League even as he undertakes a difficult mission for gold in far-flung Indonesia that could make or break his career.

The South Korea forward said he had followed Spurs’ “positive” 3-1 win over Fulham from thousands of miles away at the Asian Games, where a gold medal would exempt him from his 21-month compulsory military service.

Son, 26, was speaking after he scored the only goal in South Korea’s 1-0 win over Kyrgyzstan that sent the defending champions into a last-16 clash with Iran.

“Of course I always follow Tottenham — I was very happy because Lucas scored his first Premier League goal for us, and Harry (Kane) scored in August,” said Son.

“I’m following wherever I go. When they play Manchester United I will support them.”

Son is playing at the Asian Games after being granted special permission by Spurs, with whom he signed a new, five-year contract last month.

“I can’t say I’m 100 percent sure to win the gold medal. We are on the way to make something, and to win some trophies,” he said.

“But I’m not thinking about it already, the final… We can enjoy this evening, and from tomorrow we can be ready for the round of 16.”

Before leaving for Jakarta, Son apologised to his Spurs team-mates for his absence for up to three weeks on international duty.

“Of course I’m still very sorry,” Son added.

South Korea were all but certain to reach the round of 16 prior to kick-off, as only an 11-goal loss to Kyrgyzstan would have prevented their passage.

Son, making his first start of the competition, volleyed home from a tight angle in the 63rd minute as South Korea laboured to victory, after their shock 2-1 defeat to minnows Malaysia.

– ‘I will be ready’ –

A few hundred flag-waving Koreans in the stands roared with approval as Son’s name was announced in the starting line-up.

Their chants of “Victory Korea” resonated around the sparsely attended SI Jalak Harupat Stadium, high among the mountains of western Java, 70 miles (113 kilometres) from host city Jakarta.

The defending champions dominated but couldn’t break through in a lacklustre first half, with Son firing a free kick on the edge of the box straight into the wall.

But Son sparked his team into life with his goal just after the hour-mark to ensure a tough clash with fellow World Cup contestants Iran.

“It was very important, we worked very hard,” Son told AFP. “It was a very difficult game against such a team because they were just defending, counter-attack.”

Son had skipped the opening 6-0 romp over Bahrain after arriving late in Indonesia, due to his appearance in Spurs’ Premier League opener at Newcastle, and was a late substitute against Malaysia.

He praised his Tottenham Hotspur team-mate Lucas Moura for his first Premier League goal in the win against Fulham, despite the Brazilian taking his place in the Spurs team during his absence.

“I was very happy when he scored his first goal for Tottenham in Premier League. You know, it doesn’t matter who plays — I will be ready when I get back to Tottenham as well.

“(Having) conversations with Lucas Moura, Eric Lamela, Harry, we have a lot of good players. I think this make our team stronger and stronger.”

Thais settle for silver as Asian Games  organisers indulge in shady practice

Five-time Asian Championships winner Vipavee Deekaballes had to be content with the silver medal in the Asian Games downhill yesterday after being allowed severely limited time to get accustomed to the venue in Subang, Indonesia.

The 27-year-old Chiang Mai cyclist clocked 2:42.654 minutes, nearly 10 seconds behind gold medallist Tiara Andini Prasktika of Indonesia, while bronze went to another host rider, Nining Pornwaningsih (2:42.664).

Vipavee was allowed to train for just three hours on Sunday and only briefly again yesterday as organisers claimed they had no alternative to close the area “due to inclement weather”.

Vipavee Deekaballes

“I came to the race well aware of my disadvantage compared to the Indonesian cyclists. I’m sorry I couldn’t win but I’m also happy as this is my first medal in the Asian Games. I gave my all out there,” said Vipavee, who won the Asian Championships in 2011, and from 2015-18.

Cycling Association of Thailand Decha Hemkrasri also revealed that both South Korea and Japan had withdrawn from the downhill and crosscountry events, claiming unfair practice by the organisers.

“We proved that despite all tactics by the hosts, we still managed to win medals,” Decha said.

The Kingdom’s cycling team also yielded one more bronze from men’s downhill, Suebsakun Sukchanya coming third with a time of 2:18.449 minutes. Indonesian Khoiful Mukhib stole the limelight by finishing in just 2:16.687 minutes, 1.497 second ahead of Chiang Shenshan of Taiwan.

Thailand also won equestrian and weightlifting bronze medals.

The Thai dressage team scored 66.715 points to trail Japan (69.499) and South Korea (68.3445).

2017 World Championships snatch gold medallist Thunya Sukcharoen also finished third in the women’s 48kg after lifting 189kg.

In badminton, the women’s team are also sure of a medal after a 3-0 win over Taiwan that included a stunning 2-0 victory by Ratchanok Intanon over world No 1 Tai Tzu Ying.

In men’s sepak takraw team regu second preliminary round, Thailand’s defending champions surged to the top of Pool A after outclassing South Korea 3-0, following a first-up win by the same score over Malaysia. Thailand, as group winner, will play India in the semi-final on Tuesday.

The women’s team also beat South Korea 3-0 for their second win in Group A.

Luksika Khumkum

However, there was sad news for the Kingdom’s top two female tennis players, Luksika Kumkum and Peangtarn Plipuech. They, along with the No 1 pairing of Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana were all eliminated in the second round.

That represented a dismal outcome for Thai tennis after it returned home from Incheon 2014 with one gold, one silver and one bronze.

And the exit of the Thai men’s football team was also confirmed as Sunday’s loss to Uzbekistan and other results yesterday meant they failed to qualify as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Christian Lee eyeing important bounce-back win against Edward Kelly at ONE: BEYOND THE HORIZON

After falling short in his first bid to capture a world championship in the sport, Singaporean contender Christian “The Warrior” Lee returns to the cage to take on Team Lakay featherweight dynamo Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly at ONE: BEYOND THE HORIZON on Saturday, 8 September at the Baoshan Arena in Shanghai, China.

For the 20-year old star out of Evolve MMA in Singapore, it is a chance to get back on track after suffering just his second career defeat in eleven professional mixed martial arts bouts when he failed to dethrone reigning two-division kingpin Martin Nguyen for the ONE Featherweight World Championship back in May.

Come event night, Lee believes that he and Kelly will be putting on an exciting show for the passionate fans in Shanghai.

Both Lee and Kelly have a knack for finishing their opponents, combining 17 wins via stoppage between the two outstanding featherweight competitors.

“I think that Edward Kelly is a good fighter and a great guy,” Lee shared. “I have been following his career in ONE, and I think we will put up an exciting fight for the fans.”

A lifelong student of martial arts, Lee comes from a family of competitors, with both parents boasting black bets in a variety of disciplines including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Taekwondo.

Meanwhile, Lee’s older sister Angela is the reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion and is arguably the biggest mixed martial arts star in Asia today.

After making his professional mixed martial arts debut as a high school senior just over two years ago, Lee evolved into one of the best young talents on the ONE Championship roster and a bonafide contender in the featherweight division.

Looking at Lee’s last three bouts, all have come against former or current champions such as reigning ONE Featherweight and Lightweight World Champion Nguyen, former ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu Boku and ex-DEEP titleholder Kazunori Yokota, which speaks volumes about the level he is at in his young career.

The well-rounded Lee, whose owns five knockout triumphs and four via submission, believes that he has more tools in his arsenal compared to Kelly.

Being fourteen years Kelly’s junior, Lee will also have youth on his side as he usually does in his matches.

“With all due respect to Edward, I feel that I am deeper in every area of the game,” Lee said.

With Kelly also coming off a loss in his previous bout – a technical knockout defeat at the hands of former ONE Featherweight World Champion Narantungalag “Tungaa” Jadambaa – Lee sees their upcoming contest as a crucial compass as to what the future will hold.

A win puts either man back in the conversation for the ONE Featherweight World Championship picture, while a loss would definitely push either one of them to the back of the line in the talent-filled weight class.

“Absolutely, this is a very important fight for both of our careers. We are definitely going to put on a show,” he guaranteed.

Bertens shocks No. 1 Halep to win Cincinnati WTA title

Dutch challenger Kiki Bertens profited from a third-set collapse from Simona Halep to score the biggest win of her career Sunday, beating the world number one 2-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 in the Cincinnati final.

Halep, who won the Montreal trophy a week ago and came into the final on a nine-match winning streak, ran out of reserves and was unable to stop the mounting Bertens momentum.

“I’ve lost three finals here, but maybe I will able to win one at this tournament because I love to play here,” said Halep, who fell to Serena Williams in the 2015 final of the hardcourt US Open tuneup and to Garbine Muguruza in the title match last year.

The upset took just over two hours and marked the 10th time this season that 17th-ranked Bertens has defeated a top 10 opponent.

“Hopefully we can play many more matches like this in the future,” said Bertens, who claimed a sixth career WTA title.

Bertens saved a match point in the second-set tiebreaker to stay alive.

Halep had looked like ending a quick afternoon with a victory after breaking Bertens twice to sweep the first set.

But the 26-year-old Dutchwoman, who had considered retiring last season due to poor results, began to turn the tide in the second as she broke for a 3-1 lead.

Halep got that break back in the eighth game to make it 4-all, and took tighter control in the tiebreaker.

But Bertens won four games in the decider to take a 4-2 lead and quickly seized the set seconds after saving the match point.

Halep seriously faded in the final set, going down two breaks to trail 1-4.

Bertens kept up the pressure and advanced with a winner on her first match point, posting her second career win over Hale six years after beating her for the first time.

The depleted Halep is still entered as top seed in the upcoming WTA tournament in New Haven, which ends just two days prior to the start of the US Open in New York.

Jose Mourinho admitted Manchester United had paid the price for “incredible mistakes” in their dismal 3-2 defeat at Brighton on Sunday.

Mourinho’s side were blown away on the south-coast as Brighton scored twice in two minutes thanks to goals from Glenn Murray and Shane Duffy midway through the first half.

Romelu Lukaku got one back, but Pascal Gross’s penalty capitalised on more poor United defending to send Brighton into the interval with a 3-1 lead.

United rarely looked like mounting a fightback and Paul Pogba’s penalty with virtually the last kick of the game came way too late.

A shell-shocked Mourinho conceded United‘s players had only themselves to blame for their first defeat of the Premier League season.

“We were punished by the mistakes we made. For me that’s the story of the game. We made incredible mistakes in some crucial moments. Mistakes that killed us,” Mourinho said.

“Especially that third goal — we expected to come at 2-1 with positivity — then the third goal killed us off in the second half. Our second goal came too late.

“The week leading up was good and I expected the team collectively to be better. There are basic mistakes that makes almost an impossible mission to win the match.”

Many of Mourinho’s stars, including World Cup winner Pogba, new signing Fred and French forward Anthony Martial, were anonymous for long periods, but the boss refused to criticise individuals.

“I don’t want to go in that direction. I have to learn from my reality,” Mourinho said.

“Last season when I was critical of my team and was debating openly of the performances I was criticised for being too open about my players.

“I will be open when they are doing well. I cannot criticise the desire of my players.”

France midfielder Pogba took blame for his lethargic display, admitting he had been well below his best.

“I’m disappointed, with my performance and the team performance. We didn’t deserve to win,” Pogba said.

“I will always try. I know I lost a lot of balls which shouldn’t happen.

“I tried, I kept pushing, that’s my personality. I tried to help the team as much as possible. It didn’t happen today.”

Questioning United‘s desire, Pogba said Brighton had wanted the points more.

“Maybe we didn’t have the attitude to break them, to kill them when we had to kill them and to go through the lines. That’s a lesson we have to keep in mind,” Pogba said.

“Today the truth is we didn’t play well enough. They had more hunger than us and the result is the right one for them.”

WOMEN’S POOMSAE TEAM OUTWIT FANCIED S KOREA

THAILAND’S campaign in the Asian Games got off to a promising start with the taekwondo squad bringing the first gold medal in the women’s poomsae team event.

The awesome trio of Phenkanya Phaisankiattikun, Ornrawee Sirisahakit, Kotchawan Chomchuen proved superior in their presentation and accuracy to rivals South Korea, where this martial arts originated, outscoring them 8.210 to 8.200 in the final. They had outperformed Taiwan 7.950-7.650 earlier in the semi-finals.

It was a surprise medal for the Kingdom’s team as poomsae has just been included in the Games as a medal sport for the first time.

“It was really hard,” said team manager Thanathit Raktabut. “Beating South Korea is awesome. Both the athletes and the coaching team deserve full credit for their hard work. They have been well prepared and finally won the gold for the country.”

Earlier, Thailand won a bronze medal in the men’s individual poomsae after PongpornSuvittayarak lost to South Korean Kang Minsung 8.49 to 8.70 in the semi-final. Pongporn’s medal was the first for Thailand in the 18th Asiad being held in Indonesia.

“Pongporn also did an excellent job even though he had to settle for a bronze. We expect to win more when the fighting event starts on Tuesday [tomorrow],” said Thanathit. Taekwondo is expected to yield more medals from the highly promising Panipak Wongpattanakit in the women’s 49 category.

In sepak takraw, Thailand had no problem handling their arch-rivals Malaysia, beating the neighbouring country 3-0 in the men’s team regu Group A preliminary round.

However, Thailand’s national head coach Kamon Tankimhong saw some loopholes in his side, which must be fixed before the next game against South Korea today.

“Our players need to adjust to the conditions here in order to have more time for the warm-up. It’s good we played Malaysia first so we know where we have to improve if we are to meet them again, especially our attacking game,” said Kamon in a post-match interview.

Veteran player Pornchai Kaokaew who has won a total of eight Asian Games gold medals said: “They [Malaysia] served really well against us but we still managed to come back and win the match due to our better teamwork. Malaysia have been improving a lot. We should be careful if we have to play them again in the next stage,” said the 37-year-old long-time national player.

In women’s volleyball first preliminary round in Pool A, Thailand got off to a flying start with a convincing 3-0 over the Philippines 25-22 25-12 25-15.

“We started a bit slow as Philippines knew our style and took some risks with powerful serves. But we took control later in the first game and stayed ahead until the end,” said national coach Danai Sriwatcharamethakul whose side will play Japan on Thursday.

In the men’s badminton team event, Thailand proved no match to the powerful South Koreans who won the first-round match 3-1. The women’s team face Taiwan today in the quarter-finals.

Thailand’s chance to reach the knockout stage of the Asian Games football competition appears slim as they lost to Uzbekistan 0-1 in the last preliminary round of Group B on Sunday.

The Kingdom lost the only goal in the match produced by Uzbek captain Zabikhillo Urinboev in the 17th minute while unfancied Bangladesh beat Qatar 1-0 during the injury time to join Group leader Uzbekistan, with three wins, into the last 16 as second placed finisher.

Thailand, however, still hope to remain in the tournament as there are four more places for best third placed teams from six groups when all preliminary rounds are over on Tuesday.

“We played well for three games but we just couldn’t  get the ball into the goal. We hope that miracle will happen and get us a chance to still remain in the Games,” said national coach Worrawoot Srimaka.

However, the women’s team were already sent packing by Vietnam who beat them 3-2 in Group C. Thailand finished third with Japan and Vietnam advancing.
