Football world in jubilant after Wild Boars rescued

Football celebs and English Premier champions extended their congratulation messages to the Wild Boars after 13 team members trapped inside the Tham Luang cave were finally recued on Tuesday.

Freshly after helping France to the World Cup semi-final win over Belgium 2-1, Les Bleus’ midfielder  Paul Pogba dedicated the victory to the Mu Pa football team on his instagram.

“The victory goes to the heroes of the day, well done boys, you are strong,” he wrote.

Earlier, Pogba’s English Premier League side Manchester United announced on their official Facebook the Wild Boars are invited to a game at the Old Trafford in the new season.

“We would be honoured to welcome the team from the Wild Boars Football Club and their rescuers to the Old Trafford this coming season.”

The invitation should bring smiles on the faces of the 12 Thai boys and their assistant coach who were trapped inside the cave in Chiang Rai for more than two weeks. As they have to spend a week at a hospital for recovery, they are unlikely to accept the invitation from FIFA president Gianni Infantino to the World Cup final in Russia this Sunday.

England’s defender Kyle Walker tweeted his appreciation on the suucessful recue operation and at the same time asked for address of the trapped boys with a picture of one of the victims wearing England’s national jersey. However he later removed the post.

“I’d like to send out shirts to them. Is there anyone who can help with an address?,” wrote Walker whose team will face Croatia in the other World Cup semi-final tonight.

Former England captain David Beckham also posted on his instagram, saluting the rescue team especially Saman Kunan who passed away during the operation.

“These boys are heroes, as is the coach, the men and the women who risked their lives rescuing them and the incredible Saman Kunan,” Beckham said.

On Tuesday’s morning former English Premier League champions Leicester City released a clip to show support message for the Thai team, saying in Thai “Mu Pa, Klab Baan” (Wild Boars, Come home!).

Paul Pogba dedicated France’s World Cup semi-final win against Belgium to the 12 boys who survived a harrowing ordeal trapped underground in Thailand.

The final five members of a young football team were rescued from a flooded Thai cave on Tuesday after spending 18 harrowing days trapped deep inside, completing an astonishing against-the-odds rescue mission that captivated the world.

Elite foreign divers and Thai Navy SEALs extracted the final batch of four boys, plus the 25-year-old coach, via a treacherous escape route that required them to squeeze through narrow, water-filled tunnels in darkness.

Following the 1-0 win in Saint Petersburg, Manchester United midfielder Pogba tweeted: “This victory goes to the heroes of the day, well done boys, you are so strong.”

FIFA boss Gianni Infantino had invited the boys’ Wild Boars football team to Sunday’s World Cup final last week.

But FIFA said it had been informed “that due to medical reasons, the boys will not be in a position to travel to Moscow”.

“FIFA’s priority remains the health of everyone involved in the operation and we will look into finding a new opportunity to invite the boys to a FIFA event to share with them a moment of communion and celebration,” a spokesman said.

The Thai footballers, aged from 11 to 16, had been stuck deep underground after setting off to explore the cave with their coach after training on June 23.

FIFA also expressed condolences to the family of a Thai Navy SEAL who died after running out of oxygen during the rescue operation on Friday. “Our thoughts are with his family,” FIFA said.

The Royal Cup, held in honour of King Rama X, is to return to the 2018 Asian Tour schedule from July 26 to 29 at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club, it was confirmed yesterday.

India’s Shiv Kapur, who won for a record third tour title last season, is expected to defend his title against a talented field when he returns to the course which has hosted two events: the Ladies European Thailand Championship and Queen’s Cup.

The 2018 Royal Cup, which offers total prize-money of US$500,000, will be held in conjunction with the 66th birthday of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, which falls on Saturday, July 28.

Man-of-the-moment John Catlin of the United States, who became the first player to win twice on the Asian Tour in 2018 with his victory at the Sarawak Championship last week, will headline a 156-man field alongside countryman and one-time winner Paul Peterson.

A strong Thai contingent, featuring Pavit Tangkamolprasert, Prom Meesawat and Panuphol Pittayarat, will also aim to recapture the prestigious trophy, which marks the Tour’s fourth stop in Thailand this season.

The Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club also hosted the Queen’s Cup, where Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond claimed his second Asian Tour title last month. The tournament was held on the Mountain Course (front nine) and Ocean Course (back nine).

The Asian Tour will return to the same venue for the Royal Cup, with the front nine being played on the Lake course and the back nine being played on the Mountain course. The par-70 set-up measures 6,716 yards in total.

A qualifying tournament offering 10 spots for the Royal Cup will be held at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club on Monday, July 23.

Sitthikom boosts Thai hopes

2013 semi-finalist Sitthikom Thammasin emerged the only successful Thai to qualify for the men’s singles main draw of the Toyota Thailand Open badminton after he won two qualification matches at the Nimibutr National Stadium on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old former Asian Games international beat Wang Yuehang of England 21-12 21-10 in the first round and sealed his berth by seeing off Rahul Chittaboina of India 21-14 21-12.

“Before the qualifying round, I just hoped to make it to the maindraw  But as I achieved that already, I aim at the quarter-finals now,” said Sitthikom whose semi-final appearance five years ago was still his best result up to date.

“The tournament is bigger now as it’s World Tour Super 500. It won’t be easy anymore,” he added.

However, a series of high ranked players including world No 4 Shi Yuqi of China, No 5 Kidambri Srikanth of India and world No 7 and reigning Olympic champion Chen Long withdrawing, this for Sitthikom will open doors for Thais.

“They may get exhausted from two straight event (Malaysia and Indonesia) before Thailand. So everybody stands a better shot including Thais.”

Sitthikom’s presence in the 32-field lifts Thailand’s representation in the men’s event to six players, including No 1 Khosit Phetpradab and in-form No 2 Kantaphon Wangcharoen.

The main singles matches get under way this morning without women’s defending champion Ratchanok Intanon, who was forced to withdraw on Monday with a back injury.

In the mixed doubles first round, Thai hopes Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai had to dig deep before outlasting Taiwanese Lee Yang and Hsu Ya Ching 19-21 21-10 21-17.

Wimbledon won’t budge on World Cup final clash, happy with phone viewing

Wimbledon won’t budge on World Cup final clash, happy with phone viewing

sports July 10, 2018 12:00

By AFP

London – Wimbledon chiefs insisted again Monday that the men’s final will start at its traditional time despite clashing with a potential England World Cup triumph but will have no objection if the Centre Court crowd want to take sneak peeks of the action from Moscow on their phones.

The All England Club has come under increasing pressure to rethink its 2pm (1300GMT) start time for Sunday’s men’s singles final with the football showpiece in Moscow kicking off at 4pm in the UK (1500GMT).

Should England defeat Croatia in Wednesday’s semi-final then the national team will feature in a World Cup final for the first time since lifting the trophy in 1966.

“It is purely our decision to stay at 2pm. It will stay this year, it will stay next year,” said All England Club chief executive Richard Lewis.

However, Lewis said he would have no objection if many of the 15,000 fans inside Centre Court wanted to follow the football on their devices — as long as they did not disturb the players.

“Our attitude is if people aren’t affecting other people’s enjoyment of the tennis because they’ve got it on silent or whatever, or they are listening with an earphone, or whatever, that’s fine,” he said.

Defending champion Roger Federer, who is more than likely to be playing in Sunday’s final, joked that maybe the World Cup final should move to accommodate the Wimbledon title match.

“I’m more concerned the World Cup final will have issues because the Wimbledon final is going on,” said the eight-time champion after seeing off France’s Adrian Mannarino in straight sets on Monday.

“They’ll hear every point, Wow, Love-15, 15-30. The players (at the World Cup) are going to look up in the crowd and not understand what’s going on at Wimbledon!

“That’s how important Wimbledon is to me and to us over here.”

Lewis also insisted that there were no plans to show either Wednesday’s semi-final or Sunday’s final at the World Cup on Wimbledon’s giant TV screen attached to one of the sides of Court One.

Last Saturday, England made the semi-finals with victory over Sweden as action at Wimbledon took place.

“Saturday was one of the most special days I can remember at the championships. The tennis was very good and there as an historic football match going on,” added Lewis.

“People followed the football on their devices thanks to modern technology without disturbing other spectators.

“You can tell when England scored and it was wonderful but we didn’t receive any complaints that the enjoyment of tennis had been spoiled.”

“I am sure the same again will happen on Wednesday — and hopefully on Sunday.”

He added: “People get Wimbledon and we get the balance right.”

– ‘Support World Cup’ –

Lewis has become exasperated by stories that the All England Club has been indifferent to the national wave of affection which has engulfed Gareth Southgate’s football team.

“We have a very strong public wi-fi signal and it worked brilliantly on Saturday,” he said.

“That indicates that we are supportive of the World Cup and that we are not turning down the signal strength!

“We are a tennis tournament but we are aware that there is something special going on elsewhere.”

“I have met Gareth Southgate, he’s a great guy. Jeremy Dier (the father of England star Eric Dier) is a member of the club. I have known Eric since he was a teenager.”

Should England make the final on Sunday, it’s possible that the men’s final may not even be over — especially if Federer and Rafael Nadal involved.

Ten years ago, Nadal triumphed over his great rival in a five-set epic which ended at 9.16pm (2016GMT).

Meanwhile, Croatia’s Donna Vekic, who was knocked out of Wimbledon by Julia Goerges of Germany in the fourth round on Monday, said she will be sending “good vibes” to her country’s football team in Russia.

“I think it would be huge if we win. We are a country of four million people,” said the 22-year-old.

“I saw a few pictures the size of Croatia compared to size of Russia, and I think if we are already to be in semi-finals is unbelievable, but if we can make it further, it’s really good, as well.”

Tom Boonen says, “I am pleased to support this superbly inclusive cycle festival as an ambassador for this, the 2nd year of Bangkok Bank CycleFest in Thailand. We have seen continuous growth of the cycling sports across the world – in Europe, which was already highly developed as a cross-border cycling community, but especially here in Asia. It is also important that we can help ensure that all cyclists, both amateur and professional riders, are correctly educated about cycle safety – a particular issue when considering road safety environments such as Thailand where there is room for improvement. This of course requires all parties and communities to help provide a safe cycling environment on the roads. This is how we are best able to support everyone who wants to get active and improve the lives of people”.

Other ambassadors for the race include actor Nut Devahastin Na Ayudhya and VarnVarn Aroonnapa Panichjaroon. The group of Bangkok Bank executives, together with the celebrities, aim to drive the charity aspect of the event, as well as encouraging their colleagues to saddle up and enjoy the ride.

Mr. Robbie Henchman – Senior Vice President, International Strategic Partnerships, Endeavor said, “With a great start in 2017, we look forward to building on that momentum for an even bigger and better Bangkok Bank CycleFest in 2018.  The support of Bangkok Bank and all the sponsors is crucial to the success of the event and we thank them for their continued support this year as we gear up once again to offer cyclists of all ages and abilities a safe and beautiful setting to ride in.”

‘I’m just getting started’: Serena warns Wimbledon rivals

sports July 10, 2018 07:57

– London, July 9, 2018 (AFP) –

Serena Williams has warned her Wimbledon rivals she is nowhere near her best despite powering into the quarter-finals without dropping a set.

Williams is chasing an eighth Wimbledon crown and the American star showed why she is the title favourite with a 6-2, 6-2 demolition of Evgeniya Rodina in the fourth round on Monday.

In her 13th Wimbledon quarter-final, Serena faces Italian world number 52 Camila Giorgi on Tuesday.

The path to the title appears wide open for the 36-year-old after every female top seed crashed out before the last eight for the first time in Wimbledon history.

Garbine Muguruza, Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Sloane Stephens have all been eliminated.

The carnage at the top leaves 11th seed Angelique Kerber — beaten by Serena in the 2016 Wimbledon final — as the highest ranked player left.

Williams isn’t complaining about the high number of shock results, but she couldn’t resist at jab at the Wimbledon organisers who only seeded her 25th despite her remarkable record.

“I faced a thousand and three seeds in my life, so I’m okay,” she said.

“Things happen. On both sides, men’s and women’s, there’s been a tremendous amount of upsets.

“I don’t think this has happened to this extreme. But also I’ve never been ranked where I am when this has happened before, so usually I’m one of those few seeds left that’s still fighting and still in the tournament.

“Now that I’m not, it kind of happened!”

It’s not as if Serena needs much encouragement to dominate at Wimbledon, where she has already reached nine finals.

Having shaken off the rust following her lenghthy lay-off after the birth of her daughter Olympia in September, she is rounding nicely into form for the business end of the tournament.

Ominiously for the other seven women left in the draw, the 23-time Grand Slam champion, who missed Wimbledon last year but won the title on her previous two visits, insists there is still plenty of room for improvement.

“There’s a lot to improve on. This is only my fourth tournament back,” said Williams, who has won all three of her previous meetings with Giorgi.

“For me, there’s so much farther I want to go to get back where I was, and hopefully go beyond that.

“I’m always striving for perfection. There’s a lot of things that, I don’t know if you can tell, but I really need to work on. Hopefully I can get there.”

– No pressure –

Of ther other quarter-finalists, only Kerber and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko have won Grand Slams.

Kerber, who won the Australian and US Open in 2016, takes on Russian 14th seed Daria Kasatkina.

“I’m not feeling the pressure because I’m not looking on the seeded or who is left or not,” Kerber said of her improved title chances.

“For every single day that I’m here trying to do my best. This is all I’m focusing on. It’s still a long way until the end.”

Latvian 12th seed Ostapenko plays former Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova.

“At the French Open I had all that pressure, now it’s gone,” former junior Wimbledon champion Ostapenko said.

“I’m just not afraid to miss. I’m just going for the shots.”

Kiki Bertens took care of the last of the top 10 with a 6-3, 7-6 (7/1) victory over Czech seventh seed Karolina Pliskova.

Bertens, who was contemplating retirement last year after losing her enthusiasm for the sport, is the first Dutch woman to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals since Michaella Krajicek in 2007.

The 26-year-old faces German 13th seed Julia Goerges, who beat Donna Vekic to seal her first Grand Slam quarter-final berth at the 42nd attempt.

“This is for me something pretty special,” Goerges said.

“It sounds pretty strange when you saw my record from the last five years here. I didn’t expect it, honestly.”

England thrive in World Cup ‘bubble’ ahead of Croatia semi-final

sports July 10, 2018 07:44

By AFP

Repino, Russia – As excitement builds in England in the run-up to the country’s first World Cup semi-final for 28 years, midfielder Dele Alli insists Gareth Southgate’s team are keeping a cool head in their tournament “bubble”.

England’s matches so far in Russia have attracted huge television audiences at home and wild celebrations, with affable coach Gareth Southgate and his vibrant young squad capturing the hearts of a nation.

In sharp contrast to the feverish atmosphere, Alli and his teammates are in relaxed mood in the sleepy seaside resort of Repino, 45 kilometres (28 miles) northwest of Saint Petersburg.

“You are in your own little bubble when here — training camp, coming back, getting ready for the next game. It is not until you look at social media and the internet that you realise how big it is,” Alli said on Monday.

“Obviously we know we are playing in the World Cup, in the semi-final. We are so focused on the games that you forget what we have done so far.

“It is important that we stay like that, keep going and hopefully we achieve something to make it even more special to get to the final and win it.”

Alli scored his first World Cup goal as England cruised into the last four with a 2-0 win over Sweden on Saturday.

A much tougher test is expected in Moscow on Wednesday against a Croatia side that swept past Argentina in the group stages and boasts the midfield talents of Real Madrid’s Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic of Barcelona.

But while many pundits and even England fans are surprised by their progress, Alli says the squad always believed they could go far.

“We had to believe and we know how talented we are as a squad,” he added. “We know we have some unbelievable players and a great manager and everyone is clear on what we want to do.

“When you have such a solid foundation, you have the basics and clear understanding of what we want to do and achieve, it’s not a surprise that it’s going well for us.”

– Croatia defy controversy –

The calmness in England’s camp on and off the field is in stark contrast to Croatia’s experience.

In the latest in a series of controversies, former international Ognjen Vukojevic was kicked out of their delegation on Monday and fined by FIFA for posting a pro-Ukraine video clip following their penalty shootout victory over Russia on Saturday.

Defender Domagoj Vida, who scored against Russia, escaped with just a warning from FIFA, which bans political statements, for also appearing in the video and shouting “Glory to Ukraine!”

Earlier in the tournament, AC Milan striker Nikola Kalinic was sent home, reportedly over a disagreement with coach Zlatko Dalic about his fitness.

Croatia’s build-up to the tournament was overshadowed by the graft trial of former Dinamo Zagreb chief Zdravko Mamic and charges against captain Modric for alleged false testimony in that case.

Despite that, Modric’s three man-of-the-match performances and two winning penalties from Rakitic in shootout wins over Denmark and Russia have seen them match Croatia’s best-ever World Cup performance 20 years ago in France.

Physical exertions to reach the last four could take their toll but Dalic believes his side will have the energy reserves to end England’s dream.

“Of course there is some power left for the English,” said Dalic. It will be a battle again but I trust us. I have belief in us.”

Federer, Nadal close in on dream Wimbledon final

sports July 10, 2018 07:27

London – Defending champion Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal closed in on a dream Wimbledon final as the sport’s two greatest players swept into the last-eight on Monday.

Eight-time champion Federer needed just 16 minutes to win the opening set on his way to a 6-0, 7-5, 6-4 defeat of France’s Adrian Mannarino to reach his 16th All England Club quarter-final.

World number one Nadal, the two-time champion, reached his first quarter-final at Wimbledon since 2011 — when he went on to finish runner-up — with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 win over Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic.

Federer will be playing in his 53rd Grand Slam last-eight when he tackles Kevin Anderson, the eighth-seeded South African.

Top seed Federer, 36, has now won 32 consecutive sets at Wimbledon, just two behind his record set from the third round in 2005 to his title triumph in 2006.

He has also held serve for 81 successive games at the tournament, a run stretching back the first set of his semi-final win against Tomas Berdych in 2017.

“It was crucial for him to stay in the match at the beginning of the second set and then it got tougher,” said 20-time major winner Federer.

“You always tend to play better against better players and I’m happy to be back in the second week of Wimbledon.”

Federer boasts a 4-0 career record against 2017 US Open runner-up Anderson, who reached the quarter-finals for the first time with a 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 7-6 (7/4) win over France’s Gael Monfils.

Anderson is the first South African man in the Wimbledon last-eight since Wayne Ferreira in 1994.

Nadal, like Federer yet to drop a set, routed world number 93 Vesely on the eve of the Czech player’s 25th birthday.

Monday’s win took Nadal, 32, into a 35th Grand Slam quarter-final.

“It was an important victory as since 2011 I have not been in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. So it’s an important moment,” said Nadal, the 17-time Grand Slam champion who has made four successive quarter-finals at the majors for the first time in six years.

Next up for Nadal is either Juan Martin del Potro, the fifth seeded Argentine, or unseeded Gilles Simon of France.

Del Potro was leading 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (7/5), 5-7 when his tie with Simon was halted for the night due to darkness.

Novak Djokovic reached the quarter-finals for the 10th time with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win over Russia’s Karen Khachanov.

“He’s got weapons, a big serve and a big forehand,” said Djokovic of the world number 40.

“I got a lot of first serves in, made him hit the extra ball. I served well when I needed to.

“It was difficult in the last few games. It was dark so I couldn’t see the ball that well and it was very windy.”

Three-time champion Djokovic, seeded 12, will next face Japan’s 24th seed Kei Nishikori.

It will be Djokovic’s 41st appearance in a Grand Slam quarter-final and he will start favourite against Nishikori who will be in his first last-eight at the All England Club.

Former world number one Djokovic has a 13-2 winning record against the Japanese player.

Nishikori overcame a right arm injury to reach his first Wimbledon quarter-final with a gritty 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (12/10), 6-1 win over Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis.

“It’s always like a big war for me when I play Novak. I always enjoy playing against him,” said Nishikori, who has beaten the Serb just twice in 15 meetings.

The 28-year-old Nishikori is the first Japanese man to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon since Shuzo Matsuoka in 1995.

American ninth seed John Isner also reached his first Wimbledon quarter-final with a 6-4, 7-6 (10/8), 7-6 (7/4) win over Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Isner, 33, will be playing in his first quarter-final at the majors since the 2011 US Open when he faces former Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic.

Raonic fired 37 aces and 74 winners to defeat Mackenzie McDonald of the United States and reach the quarter-finals for the fourth time.

The 27-year-old Canadian, runner-up to Andy Murray in 2016, triumphed 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-2.

The 13th seed won all 20 of his service games.

TWO-TIME WBC super-flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai will defend his title on home soil in a non-compulsory fight at the “One Championship: Kingdom of Heroes” event in October.

The 31-year-old boxer, who beat Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico to defend his crown in February in California, will fight at home for the first time in two years after a TKO win over countryman Oley Taladklangadsawai in Nonthaburi in December 2016.

“I’m very excited at the opportunity to defend my crown at home for the first time in two years,” said Srisaket who is unbeaten in his last 18 matches.

“To be able to compete in the One Championship arena is an honour. I’m determined to defend my belt in front of the home fans,” added the Thai, who appears to have recovered from his high-profile break-up with long-time girlfriend Patchareewan Kanha in May.

His promoter Thainchai Pisitwuttinan of Nakhonloung Promotion said the bout was not compulsory but would be sanctioned by WBC. The camp is looking for a challenger from Asia or Latin American.

“It depends on who has the guts to challenge Srisaket. We still have enough time to find his match. It will be a dream come true to see a Thai defend his belt in his motherland,” said Thainchai.

The Kingdom of Heroes stop is due at the Impact Arena on October 6.
