DoubleTree by Hilton is celebrating its 50th anniversary by offering a “Cookie Suite Experiential Package” at the recently opened DoubleTree by Hilton Phuket Banthai Resort, a sweet treat billed as a first for Thailand.

It’s an amazing extension of the chain’s custom of presenting guests at check-in a warm DoubleTree Cookie as a welcome and part of its CARE (Creating A Rewarding Experience) service culture.

Available only until the end of this year, the Cookie Suite package includes a range of benefits ensuring that guests are fully immersed in the new tropical resort.

Guests stay in the cookie-theme King Deluxe Suite, which has a separate living area with a dedicated “cookie bar” decked out with freshly baked cookies, a neon cookie sign and a flat-lay photography corner for photo enthusiasts.

Cookie-scented candles and body-scrub bath amenities extend the experience to the bathroom, and for the young ones there are customised cookie bathrobes and cookie plushies.

Guests in the Cookie Suite also receive a beach kit with a cookie-design beach umbrella and towels to take to Patong Beach, directly across from the resort.

“More than just a delicious treat, the DoubleTree Chocolate Chip Cookie represents our constant dedication to our guests and the thoughtful touches that ensure they feel special and cared for throughout their stay in Phuket,” said general manager Tim Tate.

The Cookie Suite Experiential Package offer is subject to availability when booked before December 30, with a minimum stay of two nights.

Though Phuket is among the world’s most popular tourist destinations, injecting Bt477 billion to the economy and widely advertised as the “Pearl of the Andaman Sea”, its future status has been questioned due to competition from Indonesia and Vietnam.

In response, Phuket is making a move to focus on the city’s “Old Town” to attract more tourists, along with an “Endless Discovery” branding campaign to highlight the variety of local tourist options.

Don Limnantapisit, the president of the Phuket Old Town community, says most tourists have visited just about everywhere in Phuket – except for the Old Town.

Though the Old Town area has for 15 years encouraged tourist visits so that it wouldn’t disappear from Phuket’s map, only in the past two years has it seen much success in attracting tourists – thanks to the power of social media.

As well, CNN recently included Old Town on its list of Asia’s 13 most picturesque towns. In addition, Thailand’s Fine Arts Department and Phuket are working on a plan to register Old Town as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

The new “Phuket Endless Discovery” branding aims to tease the curiosity of travellers, said the president of the Phuket Tourism Association, Bhummikitti Ruktaengam

Statistics show a significant growth in travellers for meetings, incentive travel, conventions and exhibitions in Phuket. The figure for 2018 showed an increase to 2,216,230, up 167.94 per cent from 2017, bringing in Bt19.5 billion.

Travel influencers share tips and tricks for inspiring photos

Four bloggers recently shared their techniques with finalists in the AXA Insurance “Know You Can” photo contest, along with their motivating and empowering stories.

“Taking a meaningful and powerful photograph is not only about technique. It is also about mindset and confidence,” said Satita Sorassa or Ta of Travelista, who is also the vice president of the Association of Thai Tourism Marketing (ATTM), the assistant president of the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) and a member of the Media and Blogger Club.

A former economics news chief at Krungthep Thurakij newspaper Satita eight years ago became a first-generation blogger to fulfil her dream of being a photographer and blogger.

The Travelista page owner said photography and blogging techniques can be learned. “A ‘Know you can’ concept can be well applied here. Everyone is different and unique. Anyone can become a unicorn startup with a billion-dollar business. Anything is possible.”

Seeroong Pongpanich or Roong of the Unseen Tour Thailand fan page said, “You must believe in the ‘Know you can’ concept. Know it in your own heart that you can make it happen. Have passion, hold on to your dream and keep going toward it every day. I strongly believe that one can always find time to do what one loves.”

Taking a truly inspiring photograph requires three key components, said the bloggers. First, be true to your style and create a sense of self in a portrait. Second, follow the emotions that you feel at the time you press the shutter. Third, use the focal point technique for an eye-catching effect. In addition, using new and fresh angles or unseen locations can capture viewers’ attention.

Moreover, the bloggers emphasise the importance of a caption or a description for each photograph. “The first three lines are imperative. A photo caption must be short, concise and catchy,” said Prapas Jarosrum or Tik of “KinKamTui TaluiTiew”. “In the same manner as a news article, a photo caption must answer the question of who, what, when, where and why.

“When I first started my page, I had very few followers. However, I was not discouraged because I firmly believed that one day success would come.”

In short, being true to yourself, believing in your power, and not giving up are key success factors, said Warut Ownnopparatpiboon or Kor, a founder of tieweng.com website that specialises in European trips and a writer of the best-selling “Scandinavian Travel” guidebook.

Bangkok retains No 1 spot for foreign tourists, with over 22m visitors in 2018: Mastercard

Bangkok has again grabbed the No 1 spot in Mastercard’s annual Global Destination Cities Index, with more than 22 million international overnight visitors in 2018, up from 21.1 million in 2017.

Singapore is second with 14.7 million visitors in 2018.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the Thai capital has grabbed the top spot in the global index, which ranks cities in terms of the number of international visitor arrivals, cross-border spending, and other factors. It is also the ninth consecutive year that Bangkok retains the No 1 position in Mastercard’s Asia-Pacific Destinations Index (APDI).

Two other Thai destinations – Phuket and Pattaya – also made the Asia Pacific Top 10 for international arrivals, coming in at seventh and eighth, with 9.9 million and 9.4 million visitors, respectively.

This makes Thailand the only country with three destinations in the Asia Pacific Top 10.

The APDI said Thailand is again the No 1 destination for mainland Chinese travellers, with 27.1 per cent choosing it as their Asia-Pacific country of choice, followed by Japan and South Korea. Thailand also emerged as the No 1 destination in the region for overnight visitors from Malaysia and India.

Results also showed that Thais are increasingly travelling in the region, with Malaysia the most visited country, followed by Japan and Laos.

“Mastercard is proud to be actively supporting growth of the tourism industry in the country, which offers every visitor world-class hospitality, rich cultural heritage and a range of diverse experiences,” said Aileen Chew, country manager for Thailand and Myanmar. “This year, Mastercard launched two new programmes to promote tourism in Thailand – ‘Destination Thailand’ and ‘Priceless Bangkok’ – which seek to introduce the world to the incredible beauty and warmth that Thailand has to offer.”

Overall results from the APDI show that the five most popular destinations for international travellers in the Asia Pacific in 2018 were Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo and Seoul, which together welcomed more than one-fifth, or 22 per cent, of all visitors to the region. Primarily driven by explosive growth in outbound travel from mainland China, these five cities are also capturing more than one-quarter, or 25.2 per cent, of total international travel spending in the region.

Since 2009, overnight arrivals by mainland Chinese travellers in markets across the Asia Pacific surged from 10.5 million to 62.4 million in 2018, representing a 21.9 per cent compound annual growth rate over the period. Mainland China is among the top three source markets of outbound travellers for 82 cities in the Asia Pacific, or more than half of the 161 destinations in the APDI.

In 2018, the Asia Pacific hosted travellers making 342.2 million business and leisure trips, up from 159.1 million in 2009, representing an 8.9 per cent annual growth rate over the nine year period. During the same period, travel spending in the Asia Pacific more than doubled, rising from US$117.6 billion to $281.1 billion (Bt8.6 trillion), equating to a compound annual growth rate of 10.2 per cent.

“While the world’s economic, geopolitical, technological and societal landscapes have all changed dramatically since Mastercard launched this research 10 years ago, one thing has remained constant: the desire of ever-growing numbers of people to explore the world beyond their own borders,” said Rupert Naylor, Mastercard senior vice president, data & services, Asia Pacific. “With the top 20 cities attracting nearly half (49.8 per cent) of all international overnight arrivals to the 161 destinations ranked in the APDI, it is important to understand not only how continuously rising travel numbers impact cities and destinations for the better, but also the challenges they pose. This equips governments, merchants and the global travel industry with the information and insights they need to better serve their residents and visitors.”

The APDI ranks 161 cities based on proprietary analysis of information from third-party sources such as the World Travel & Tourism Council, the International Air Transport Association, the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation, the International Monetary Fund and national tourism boards. Public data is used in deriving the international overnight visitor arrivals and their cross-border spending in each of the 161 destination cities. Forecasts are based on the weighted average of national tourism forecasts and actual 2019 monthly data at the destination level. This Index and all accompanying reports are not based on Mastercard volumes or transactional data, the company said.
