AS MUCH as Bt2.5 billion in sales is expected at the FAST Auto Show Thailand 2019, coming to the Bangkok Trade and Exhibition Centre from June 26-30.

Event organiser Pattanadesh Asasappakij said 11 automobile and motorcycle companies, along with 18 used car dealers will be present at the four-day event, which is expected to attract 250,000 visitors.

Approximately 2,000 orders are expected for new cars while 1,000 used cars would also be sold, Pattanadesh said.

The veteran auto critic and show organiser said political stability in Thailand would help boost the event.

“It will raise consumer spending to boost the Thai economy and in turn help push growth of the Thai automobile industry,” he said

“Meanwhile, automobile companies are continuing their launch of new products and sales campaigns throughout the year,” he said.

“Organisers of the FAST Auto Show Thailand 2019 want the venue to be a place for buyers and sellers of both new cars and used cars. They can all come here. There are many show supporters who will help you achieve your goals and everyone will be satisfied. There will also be sales campaigns by exhibitors as well as financial institutions,” Pattanadesh added.

“Given all the contributing factors, we are confident that the show will benefit the Thai automobile industry, particularly from the mid-year onwards, and contribute to the growth of the Thai economy,” he said.

Customers who place orders at the show are eligible for a grand raffle offering an Isuzu pick-up truck worth over Bt500,000 as the top prize.

Expansive Mercedes-AMG offerings aim to reinforce local embrace of brand

German powerhouse Mercedes-Benz is massively expanding its Mercedes-AMG product lineup in Thailand with the launch of a bunch of new models.

Earlier this week the company staged the official introduction of the Mercedes-AMG GT 53/63 4MATIC+ 4-door coupe, G 63 SUV, E 53 4MATIC+ and C 43 4MATIC.

Since the local introduction of the Mercedes-AMG sub brand in 2017, the company has launched 10 models – GLC 43 4MATIC, GLA 45 4MATIC, GT R, GT C, C 43 4MATIC (CKD), GLC 43 4MATIC (CKD), E 63 S 4MATIC+, C 43 4MATIC facelift (CKD), CLS 53 4MATIC+ and GT S.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the sales of AMG models in Thailand has grown by over 300 per cent thanks to the expanding range of models being offered, along with attractive promotions. During the first quarter of this year alone, AMG sales increased by 79 per cent.

“The launch of five new sports luxury car lines today will not only create a new sensation for Mercedes-Benz Thailand, but it will also fully fill out the portfolio of Mercedes-AMG cars in Thailand,” Frank Steinacher, vice president for sales and marketing, Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) Ltd, said.

“At the moment, we have 18 models in our product offerings with full coverage of the 43, 45, 53, 63, 63 S and the Mercedes-AMG GT families. Moreover, the company is also preparing a surprise for every customer this year with a plan to introduce five more new models of Mercedes-AMG cars, both imported and locally produced.”

He said Mercedes-AMG buyers will enjoy more privileges, such as the AMG Private Lounge in Thailand and overseas, as well as the AMG Driving Academy, which is being set up for the first time in Southeast Asia.

Mercedes-AMG GT 53/63 4MATIC+ 4-Door Coupe

This is the first 4-door sports coupe (many might say it’s a saloon) to be developed in-house by Mercedes-AMG. Mercedes says that the GT combines daily driving comfort with a large number of options for individualisation and the very latest in sports car engineering.

The GT 53 is powered by a turbocharged 435-hp in-line 6-cylinder 48V mild hybrid engine, while the GT 63 comes with a bi-turbo V8 engine with as much as 639hp and 900Nm of torque. They both come with the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission, promising super-short shift times. Acceleration is also quick, with the GT 53 clocking 4.5 secs and the GT 63 clocking 3.2 secs for the 0-100km/h dash.

Inside, there’s a 12.3-inch widescreen infotainment display, along with a Burmester sound system (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and a new touchpad.

Mercedes-AMG G 63

Perfect for any action movie, the G 63 is the ultimate off-roading machine from Mercedes-AMG – and stands out with its large and boxy design.

The body has been strengthened with various grades of steel, while laser-welding on the roof also contributes to higher body strength and better surface quality.

The IWC-design dashboard features a cockpit of two 12.3-inch widescreens blended into a single unit. There’s also a Burmester sound system and an ambient light system with 64-selectale colours.

The 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 engine is capable of pumping out 585hp and 850Nm, and catapulting the G 63 from rest to 100km/h in under 5 seconds, particularly helpful when being pursued by T-Rex’s or rival mobsters. There is a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system (40:60) and AMG Ride Control suspension with adaptive damping with three settings.

Unfortunately, fuel consumption and the emissions level are not its strongest points at 7.6km/litre and 299g/km.

Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC CKD

This is one of the best-selling AMG models in the Kingdom, thanks to its highly competitive pricing enabled by local assembly.

Compared to the standard C-Class, the C 43 gets sporty upgrades such as new AMG radiator grille, aerodynamic kit and 19-inch 5-spoke wheels that helps improve airflow. The exterior trim is in glossy black and there are multi-beam LED headlights with Ultra Range Highbeam that shoots up 650 metres ahead.

A special AMG menu features information, such as warm-up (engine and oil temp.), setup (drive systems and exhaust), G-Force, Race Timer and Engine Data.

Apart from the normal driving modes, a new “Slippery” mode has also been introduced for wet road driving.

The interior features the AMG Matt Silver Glass-Fibre trim as well as AMG sports seats with climate control, new touch control buttons, new seatbelt feeder for front seats, Burmester sound system and 10.25-inch display.

Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ CKD

More affordable than the top E 63 4MATIC+ model launched last year, the E 53 4MATIC+ comes with a much more affordable Bt5.26-million price tag.

You still get 0-100km/h acceleration under 5 seconds from the 3.0-litre powerplant – power comes from a new engine with EQ Boost starter-alternator system featuring 48-volt mild hybrid functions.

The exterior gets AMG treatment, including 20-inch wheels in high-gloss black, AMG twin sports exhaust and a front bonnet with expressive powerdomes. The window frames are also in black, contributing to the aggressive look.

New systems offered in the E 53 4MATIC include Vehicle Setup, the Vehicle Monitoring system, Engine Remote Start, Mercedes-Benz emergency call system, as well as the Communications module (LTE) for the use of Mercedes Me connect services.

For the period of January to March, Mitsubishi Motors Thailand Co Ltd sold 23,991 vehicles, posting a growth of 15.9 per cent compared with the same period in 2018.

Mitsubishi said the total industry volume (TIV) for the quarter was 263,549 vehicles, a year-on-year (YOY) growth of 11.2 per cent. Mitsubishi Thailand’s performance also resulted in a market share of 9.1 per cent, compared to 8.7 percent for the same period in 2018.

“Like last year, we start 2019 on a positive note, on the momentum we created from our range of advanced, outstanding design and award-winning vehicles. I am confident we can carry this momentum moving forward into the year,” said chief executive Morikazu Chokki.

“We will continue to populate the market with more new models and special editions in 2019. This is in addition to the continued upgradation of our people, marketing activities and customer satisfaction,” Chokki added.

Nissan’s X-Trail a better pick than its Terra PPV

Nissan’s X-Trail a better pick than its Terra PPV

Boasting accessories aplenty and a cultured ride, it is a true global model

Nissan has recently created much hype with its Terra PPV (pickup passenger vehicle) that’s targeted at customers looking for a tough seven-seat off-roader.

Though other major pickup manufacturers had all launched PPVs, it took many years for Nissan to cough up the Terra, which obviously interfered (at least in price range) with another SUV model that it offers – the X-Trail.

The pricing of both the Terra and X-Trail start at about Bt1.3 million (Bt1.316-Bt1.427 million for the Terra and Bt1.35-Bt1.66 million for the X-Trail, which is also available in a hybrid version). To me it’s amazing how Thai customers (as well as those in many markets in which the Terra is offered) easily overlook the X-Trail, which is a true global model, and go for a lower-grade regional vehicle with pickup truck technology like the Terra, despite being a great PPV.

For 2019, the X-Trail gets several improvements that makes it even better, although the 2.0-litre engine choice (and an even lower pricing) has been removed, leaving only the 2.5-litre and hybrid.

The facelifted model gets slight cosmetic changes including fog lamps, daytime running lights and bumpers. There’s also new-design 19-inch alloy wheels with sporty 225/55 tires, along with an eye-catching Monarch Orange exterior colour.

The tailgate is electrically powered and has a hands-free function (just move your feet under the rear). Nissan says that the roof rails and panoramic sunroof are wider for this year’s model, while the luggage area has been increased slightly.

The sporty flat-bottomed multifunction steering wheel feels a little out of place considering the type of vehicle we’re in, but there are seven seats (the hybrid version has only five).

Meanwhile, the 2019 model also comes with the Nissan Intelligent Mobility package, which includes Intelligent Cruise Control, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Intervention, Moving Object Detection and Intelligent Around View Monitor. There is also a High Beam Assist system and six airbags.

The 2.5-litre petrol engine that came with the X-Trail was smooth and cultured, with 171 horsepower and 233Nm of torque on tap. The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) also contributes to a smooth performance from the X-Trail, which is something you don’t expect in the Terra.

There are three driving modes to choose from through the rotor switch – 2WD 4WD auto and 4WD. It’s a pity that the 2.5 VL’s 19-inch alloys and low-profile tyres might not suit off-roading , but it’s perfect on road. The ride is smooth while stabilisers front and rear help maintain good control through corners, and disc brakes are vented both front and rear. Now that D-shaped steering starts to make sense!

In addition to Vehicle Dynamic Control (stability control), the X-Trail also comes with Active Engine Braking that is engaged when you lift off the gas pedal or during cornering, as well as Active Ride Control and Active Trace Control that improve stability.

The interior is pretty good, with plenty of space and all the amenities, including powered front seats and an infotainment system with seven-inch touchscreen and navigation.

While confessing that I did not take the X-Trail off-roading or upcountry, I pretty much enjoyed spending time with it. Apart from its high level of usable space and versatility, the X-Trail also offers a cultured performance and lots of comfort.

Subaru assembly plant opens in Bangkok to feed regional demand

Subaru has opened an assembly plant in Thailand to produce vehicles for both the domestic and export markets.

The Bt5-billion, 100,000-square-metre plant, is geared towards achieving a maximum capacity of 100,000 units per year, and is located at the Ladkrabang Industrial Estate near Suvarnabhumi International Airport. It is the third Subaru plant in the world with the first two located in Japan and the United States.

Glenn Tan, managing director of Tan Chong International Ltd (TCIL), the regional Subaru distributor, said the new plant will in its first year assemble 6,000 Forester SUVs from knock-down kit (CKD) parts and market them to Thailand and the region.

Tan Chong Subaru Automotive (Thailand) Ltd (TCSAT), a joint venture between TCIL and TCMA TH (Tan Chong Motor Image Thailand Co Ltd), owns a 74.9-per cent share in the facility, while the remaining 25.1 per cent belongs to Subaru Corporation (formerly known as Fuji Heavy Industries Corp).

The new facility is capable of assembling four different models, with the Forester being the first model to be rolled out. So far, 100 Foresters from this plant have been delivered to Thai customers.

“This is truly a milestone for us, to be able to build Subaru cars ourselves in Thailand. From distribution, dealerships and aftersales, we are now also manufacturing Subaru cars,” Tan said.

“This strategic long-term move will allow us to better manage our supply chain, widen our product line-up, localise better and be less dependent on supply from Japan,” he added. “We will be better able to respond and meet consumer demand for Subaru vehicles in the region, and perhaps even beyond the region in the future.”

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars set a remarkable business record in 2018 to achieve its greatest sales result in the brand’s 115-year history, with 4,107 cars delivered to customers in over 50 countries worldwide.

The Greater China market played a significant role in the marque’s 2018 success story as it became Rolls-Royce’s second-largest market. The company anticipates that China will, at some point in the not-too-distant future, become Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ largest single market.

“I am very pleased with our performance in Greater China. At Rolls-Royce our patrons are our life blood,” said Torsten Muller-Otvos, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “They are our heroes and friends. We are wholeheartedly committed to meeting their diverse needs and desires. For our Chinese customers, being in the Rolls-Royce family is a special experience, like no other. And they are deeply appreciative of our meticulous attention to the most modest details, and we welcome their custom.”

Global car makers face bumpy road as China hosts auto show

Global car makers flock to the Shanghai Auto Show this week with the world’s largest vehicle market facing an unfamiliar sales slump just as China veers toward an ultra-competitive electric future.

Fuelled by rising incomes and government sales incentives, China has been the golden goose upon which the global automotive industry has staked its future.

But after years of strong growth, car sales fell last year for the first time since the 1990s, hit by a slowing economy, US trade tension, and a Chinese crackdown on shady credit practices that has crimped car-financing channels.

Sales dipped 2.8 percent in 2018 to 28.1 million units, according to that China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), a pace that has accelerated in recent months.

“This is the first time since the takeoff of the Chinese market that there has been such a long and sharp decline in sales,” said Laurent Petizon, an auto analyst at Alix Partners.

“We are starting to worry a little bit. It’s a new phenomenon.”

The decline is magnified by a prior buying rush as consumers moved to beat the government’s recent removal of tax rebates for small car purchases.

– Cut-throat –

Major carmakers still see solid potential, particularly in bright spots such as SUVs and electric vehicles, which will account for many of the new models on display in Shanghai.

But cut-throat competition is expected to intensify even in EVs with Beijing moving to phase out policies that encourage the purchase of “green” vehicles.

This mixed picture — optimism combined with worrying new realities — is reflected in the plans of carmakers like Ford.

The US manufacturer this month announced plans to launch 30 new models in China within three years, a dozen electric.

But it also unveiled a strategy to cater more directly to the evolving needs of Chinese car buyers.

This includes incorporating the artificial intelligence technology of China’s Baidu into Ford vehicles, giving Ford’s Chinese joint ventures more freedom on design choices, and other steps.

Although China is the world’s largest “new energy” vehicle market and sales soared 62 percent last year, they remain a drop in the China bucket with 1.3 million units sold, thanks in part to purchasing incentives.

But they represent the future for China, especially with the government planning to impose quotes requiring carmakers maintain a certain percentage of new energy vehicles in their Chinese production.

This has given rise to a number of Chinese EV start-ups seeking to stake out territory that will have to face off against the likes of Tesla.

– Tesla ups ante –

The California automaker, widely seen as the EV standard-setter, is putting more eggs in China’s basket.

Tesla chief Elon Musk broke ground in January on a factory in Shanghai — the company’s biggest overseas move yet.

The new plant will eventually have an annual production capacity of 500,000 vehicles, dramatically increasing Tesla’s output.

Foreshadowing further competition, Beijing has vowed to open its market, removing a requirement that foreign manufacturers form manufacturing joint ventures with Chinese partners.

Tesla’s planned factory is believed to be the first to take advantage of this.

Regardless of short-term jockeying for position, China will remain a crucial market, particularly in electrics, said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, director of the Germany-based Center of Automotive Research.

“The situation will slowly improve. Next year, the market will recover little by little and in three to four years, will have resumed its earlier growth,” he said.

Mazda hails record Thai sales

Mazda Sales Thailand Co Ltd has announced record-breaking performance for the 2018 fiscal year with total sales of over 70,000 vehicles, equivalent to a growth of 25 per cent.

According to the company, the 25-per-cent growth rate is the highest for Mazda worldwide for the second straight year.

Mazda now has a market share of 6.6 per cent in Thailand, which is the second-highest for the brand in the world, and the kingdom is also the sixth-largest market for Mazda globally, the firm said.

The company said it plans to launch said new models in Thailand this year and plans to sell as much as 75,000 vehicles.

Chanchai Trakarnudomsuk, president of Mazda Sales, said: “Mazda has been highly successful this year, with similar calendar year and fiscal year sales.

“For FY2018, Mazda sales were 70,468 vehicles, surging by 25 per cent compared to FY2017 when we sold 56,379 vehicles for a 6.6-per cent market share, which is second only to the Australian market.

“Today Mazda Thailand is being closely followed by others due to the highest growth rate for Mazda worldwide for the second year in a row.

“Important factors that will help stimulate the automobile market in 2019 stems from the Thai economy that is expanding and improving since the start of the year,” Chanchai said.

“Today we have seen that the economy has improved, the stock market is becoming active again, exports are recovering and tourism is back.

“Thailand is still an interesting destination for travellers, while our agricultural products are fetching better prices. There is more purchasing power in the country.

“Many businesses are starting to move ahead, particularly the mega investment projects by the government such as the high-speed railway system or even the launching of the economic corridor project, which is aimed at making Thailand a regional economic, trade and investment centre, as well as serving as the centre for regional transport.”

Commercial banks have been more prudent in their approval of hire-purchases loans after a warning from the Bank of Thailand (BOT), CIMB Thai’s senior executive vice president Adisorn Sermchaiwong said recently.

He added that the bank had been told to be careful in approving such loans by the central bank.

Kasikorn Leasing Co Ltd’s managing director Saranya Lelarasami said that the BOT directive would have an impact on the auto market and expects a five per cent decline in market growth from last year.
