Mercedes-Benz Leasing Thailand recorded a 20.4-per-cent growth in 2018 compared to the previous year, the company announced in a press release.

Sichan Song, managing director of Mercedes-Benz Leasing (Thailand) Co Ltd, said: “We achieved the growth due to our ability to provide one-stop financial service solutions.”

He said the company offers a comprehensive range of customised financial service options, such as promotional campaigns with lower down payments and 0-per-cent interest monthly instalments for selected models.

“We have also strengthened our digital outreach to customers through online marketing campaigns, as well as co-promotions in partnership with Mercedes-Benz Thailand.

“The total business performance of Mercedes-Benz Leasing Thailand in 2018 showed growth in almost all segments, including Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, trucks, buses and vans,” he added.

Last year Mercedes-Benz sold more than 15,000 vehicles in Thailand.

Mercedes-Benz said it was the top-selling luxury car brand in Thailand last year, with record sales of 15,785 vehicles.

This is the 18th consecutive year that the German brand has finished the year in the top position, it said.

Globally, it also achieved record sales for the eighth straight year with 2.31 million vehicles sold in 2018.

Roland Folger, Mercedes-Benz Thailand, said: “Asia-Pacific was noted as a region with the highest annual sales as 943,473 Mercedes-Benz cars were delivered solely in this region. Regional growth of 7.8 per cent was highlighted as a growth figure higher than the year before.

“Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz significantly delivered more cars to consumers in Japan, India, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam than previous years.

“For Thailand, in particular, our sales record and annual growth hit a new high with 15,785 vehicles delivered and 9 per cent growth respectively. We, therefore, remain Thailand’s top player in the luxury auto market for 18 continuous years.”

He said the company plans to introduce over 20 new models in Thailand this year under all its brands – Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach and EQ. With four new dealerships being appointed this year, the Thai network will be expanded to 36 within the end of 2019.

More models are also being picked for Thai assembly, with the latest two being the CLS53 4MATIC+ priced at Bt5.35 million and the E53 4MATIC+ coupe set at Bt6.99 million.

While Suzuki has a strong position in the eco-car market, the Japanese automaker is hoping to expand its customer base in Thailand by introducing other models as well.

It recently launched the second-generation Ertiga subcompact MPV priced from Bt655,000 to Bt695,000, and plans to sell over 2,500 of the seven-seater annually. Last year Suzuki sold a total of 28,500 vehicles in the kingdom, achieving growth of 14 per cent compared to 2017. It sold 3.3 million vehicles worldwide last year, it said.

Wallop Treererkngam, Thai sales boss, said: “Suzuki would like to create a new phenomenon with the new Suzuki Ertiga as we would like to expand our consumer base to attract a wider consumer group. These consumers are building their families while continue maintaining their quality time with their friends.

“They also tend to look for vehicles with cutting-edge design and advanced functions.”

Kasikorn Leasing Co Ltd says its 2018 performance for loans totalled Bt105.6 billion and profits Bt1.4 billion thanks to the brighter auto market at home which recorded the highest sales in five years.

In 2019, the focus will also be on an expansion of its online service channels and development of a digital platform for service capability with respect to financing approval and after-sales assistance. KLeasing will work with its business partners and car dealers nationwide with the aim of extending more than Bt110 billion in new loans.

Sasawat Virapriya, KLeasing chairman, said KLeasing’s operating results in 2018 showed total loans of Bt105.6 billion, rising 24.4 per cent from 2017, consisting of auto hire purchase, leasing and car registration loans of Bt43.5 billion, and floorplan loans of Bt62.1 billion.

On the domestic car market, KResearch expects between 980,000-1,010,000 vehicles will be sold this year, shrinking by 2-5 per cent when compared to 2018, adjusted toward normalcy after a rapid surge in the previous year.

Eco-cars are seen to have bright prospects. The March general election and expanding public investment should also contribute to a growing pickup market in Thailand, the bank said.

Sasawat said: “KLeasing will continue to penetrate the auto financing market in 2019 by focusing on digital innovations for all types of auto loans and using KBank’s strengths in service networks and customer base to expand our online and offline businesses.

“Such attempts are aimed at offering auto loan products that meet the lifestyle needs of our customers, who use digital technologies in their daily life. KLeasing will also improve various platforms to offer more convenience for our clients and provide auto financing products and services to meet their needs by taking into account their ability in making instalment payments, our credit approval and after-sales service.”

Mercedes crossover a perfect fit for wilds of the city

The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC crossover impresses with versatility of the SUV and road dynamics of a sportscar – and for not too much Baht

Luxury crossovers have gained tremendous popularity in recent decades as they responded to the changing lifestyles of consumers.

While markets like the United States have for years seen passenger cars increasingly lose out to the more versatile lifestyle vehicles, the trend is now catching up in Thailand though not yet to the same degree.

Mercedes-Benz is the current leader in the Thai luxury car market, and the company has a lot to offer in this segment. The German automaker assembles a large number of models at the Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant (TAAP) in Samut Prakarn, including the GLC 43 4MATIC that is sold under the Mercedes-AMG performance sub-brand.

With local assembly, Mercedes has been able to lower retail pricing significantly when compared to equivalent imports. With the GLC 43, the price tag is Bt4.73 million.

The GLC is the first AMG model in the midsize SUV segment, and one of a new breed of crossovers that offer both the versatility of SUVs and the road dynamics of passenger cars. Unfortunately, off-roading isn’t something you want to do in this type of vehicle.

Compared to the standard GLC, the GLC 43 gets special AMG treatment for both the exterior and interior. Apart from the front and rear AMG aprons, aluminium side steps and sports exhaust, it also carries 21-inch alloy wheels with low-profile tyres that are designed for sporty, rather than rugged, driving.

The cabin features sports seats with red seatbelts, carbon fibre trim and a flat-bottomed multi-function steering wheel. There’s enough space for the occupants and the materials are top-notch, but don’t expect as much luggage space as found in conventional SUVs – due to the rear-end design.

You get a full infotainment package, including a Burmester sound system that sounds really good, particularly at the mid- and high-frequency ranges.

What many people love best about the GLC 43 is the sheer driving performance. The same 3.0-litre bi-turbo V6 used in the C 43 Coupe produces 367 horsepower and 520Nm of torque to propel it from 0-100km/h in just 4.9 seconds. That’s truly sportscar performance.

The power is transmitted to all wheels via a sporty nine-speed automatic and the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, which sends 31 per cent of forces to the front wheels and 69 per cent to the rear.

The AMG DYNAMIC SELECT switch allows you to choose from five drive programmes, and AMG RIDE CONTROL lets drivers choose from three damping adjustments.

The AMG-tuned gearbox offers lots of fun, with a double-declutching function during downshifts. When the Sport Plus mode is selected, shift times are shorter and crisper. There are shift paddles for sporty driving, and the transmission stays in the selected gear and doesn’t shift up even when the maximum engine speed is reached.

The variable ratio steering in the GLC 43 is sharper than you’d think during the first half-turn. It gives the GLC 43 lots of nimbleness when driving in the city. The steering weight is also nice, both at low and high speeds.

The front 4-link and rear 5-link suspension is based on AIR BODY CONTROL, and provides a nice ride quality along with loads of grip on the road when working with its all-wheel-drive system. It’s pretty easy to drive the GLC 43 fast, despite its weight and size, thanks to serious AMG tuning.

Stopping power for the 1.8-tonne GLC 43 comes from 360mm perforated discs up front with 4-piston calipers, plus 320mm discs at the rear.

There’s a long list of safety features, as well as Distance Pilot DISTRONIC that maintains a safe distance when running with cruise control and Active Parking Assist.

It’s true that the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC may not be a capable off-roader that’s going to wade through rivers in the wild – look elsewhere if you need that.

But for a crossover for use in the city and for driving upcountry, it is surely one of the sportiest you can get, and with pretty good pricing too.

Ford opens Bangkok community centre

Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, in Bangkok announced plans for a new Ford Resource and Engagement Centre (FREC), which will serve as the new home for some of the city’s most innovative, environmentally conscious NGOs.

The Bangkok centre is a partnership between the Ford Fund and several NGOs, aimed at investing in and bringing new resources to Bangkok’s historic Nang Loeng neighbourhood. Ford Fund hosted a kick-off event that brought NGO partners residents together to preview the facility and learn more about plans for the new community centre.

“Our mission at the Ford Fund is to strengthen communities and help make people’s lives better, and that’s exactly what our Ford Resource and Engagement Centres are designed to do,” said Mike Schmidt, director of the Ford Motor Company Fund. “Around the world, each of our FRECs provide access to resources and services that reflect the needs and culture of the surrounding community. We have excellent partners at FREC Bangkok, and we look forward to working together to bring new programmes and opportunities to the residents in this community.”

Ford Resource and Engagement Centers are an innovation from the Ford Motor Company Fund that bring non-profit partners together in a collaborative environment to support the surrounding community and help make people’s lives better. The newest center complements two that already exist in Detroit, in the US; and one in South Africa (2017) as well as one in Craiova, Romania (2018).

FREC Bangkok is modeled after the original Center that opened in 2013 in Detroit, which has become an anchor in the vibrant community, assisting more than 85,000 people with food distribution, tax return preparation, education and job initiatives and legal assistance.

“Ford strives to build strong relationships and support communities where we operate, and FREC will takes Ford’s community outreach in Thailand to a new level,” said Wichit Wongwatthanakan, managing director of Ford Thailand. “FREC Bangkok will foster meaningful relationships between Ford and residents of the community, delivering mutual and tangible benefits.”

Mitsubishi sees boost in domestic sales

Mitsubishi sold 84,560 vehicles in Thailand last year, posting a 21.3-per-cent growth year-on-year.

In comparison, the automotive market grew 19.5 per cent with a total industry volume (TIV) of 1,041,739 units.

The automaker’s market share also grew to 8.1 per cent, Morikazu Chokki, Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand)’s president and CEO, said in a press conference.

He explained that Mitsubishi’s outstanding performance in Thailand came from an improvement in hardware, including newly designed showrooms.

“Soft skills, such as dealer service and operations, have also been successfully implemented,” he said.

On export, Mitsubishi grew 4.2 per cent year-on-year with combined built-up (BU) and knocked-down (KD) volumes totalling 347,000 units, surpassing earlier projections. At supporting sister plants in Indonesia, Philippines, Russia and Brazil, BU exports were steady and further propped up by a massive 37-per cent growth in KD volume.

In terms of production, Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) registered a significant 11.2 per cent growth, with 444,000 vehicles leaving the assembly lines at Laem Chabang Port.

This year, the Japanese automaker plans to continue focusing on growing market share, bolstered by strong models like the Triton, Xpander and models with minor changes.
