Urgent : Leading Australia wedding magazine shuts over gay snub

Sydney – A leading Australian bridal magazine has shut after being ditched by advertisers for refusing to feature same-sex couples, one year after the country changed its marriage laws.

The Christian founders of “White”, Luke and Carla Burrell, said they did not feature gay weddings in their magazine as they had “no desire to create a social, political or legal war”.

In a farewell blog on Saturday, the couple said they were targeted by activists because of their stance and forced to “pick a side”.

As a result, several advertisers withdrew their sponsorship making their publication “no longer economically viable”, the pair added.

Australian MPs late last year voted in favour of changing the Marriage Act after decades of inaction amid political wrangling.

The shift followed a contentious nationwide voluntary postal vote in support of legalising same-sex marriage.

Nearly 80 percent of eligible voters took part in the poll and almost 62 percent of those who voted chose “yes” on their ballots.

To placate the right wing of the conservative ruling coalition the government then commissioned a report into religious protections.

Parts of the review, which called for faith-based schools to legally be allowed to discriminate against gay students and teachers, were leaked last month.

It sparked a public backlash and led the government to introduce a bill to prevent sexuality-based discrimination in schools.

‘Waria’ told to leave their home in Jakarta amid anti-LGBT campaign

Seven transgender people in Sumur Utara, Klender, East Jakarta, have been told by residents to leave a boarding house they are currently staying at.

“We, kampung Sumur residents, reject the presence of LGBT groups”, states a banner put up in front of the boarding house on Saturday. The neighborhood unit (RT) head, who is reportedly a member of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI), was collecting signatures from residents to expel the waria, said Rere Ayu Wulandari, 23, one of the seven people affected, using a local term for transgender people.

Rere said they had been accused of prostitution. The boarding house is home to eight people; the eight room being occupied by a midwife, Rere said, adding that many more transgender people resided in the area.

“We have never broken any rules. We always abide by the regulations set in the neighborhood, including not receiving any guests,” Rere told The Jakarta Post on Sunday. “Our landlady defends us, but now she is being called an atheist and disgusting and [blamed for] stirring up social tension.”

Rere has stayed in the boarding house for the past five years; some of her friends have lived there for 10 years or longer and have never been threatened until now. “We have not been physically abused so far, but we do not know what will happen,” she said.

Yulianus Rettoblaut, a well-known rights activist that leads the Indonesian Waria Communication Forum (FKWI), lamented the situation. She attributed the threats to rising anti-LGBT sentiment in the country particularly ahead of the presidential and legislative elections next year, as anti-LGBT statements have been employed by politicians to get votes.

“Our [state ideology of] Pancasila guarantees equal justice for all, but we all know transgender people always face discrimination,” she said. Yuli suggested that Rere and her friends seek assistance from rights groups, such as the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH Jakarta) or Human Rights Watch (HRW) to make sure they got justice.

HRW researcher Andreas Harsono said the local residents could not trespass onto their private lives, as long as the landlady did not mind their presence.

How Jho Low ‘stole’ Christmas

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian humour strikes again! This time it’s making Christmas a “Jho-lly” good time with Christmas gifts featuring an unlikely mascot resembling 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fugitive Low Taek Jho or better known as Jho Low.

Apom Store, a lifestyle shop selling witty products that showcases the quirky side of Malaysian culture, has released a line of Christmas gifts showing a bespectacled rotund man on the run.

There are T-shirts featuring a caricature in the likeness of Low donning a Santa hat with the words “Spend it like you stole it” while another says “Lari Party Jholly Repeat”.

In line with the spirit of Christmas, a red and white mug says “Jho! Jho! Jho! Tis the season of giving… back”.

Two other mugs summarise the notorious life of the fugitive businessman with “Drink it like you stole it” and “Money, Party, Jholly, Repeat”.

In this age of social media, sending Christmas cards may no longer be in vogue.

But a Jho Low-inspired festive greeting that reads “Wishing you a Billion dollar Christmas!” in the front and “Spend it like you stole it” inside the card might just reverse the trend.

There are other Christmas gifts with similarly mischievous quotes in the form of coasters, a tote bag, and a “Finding Jholly” book similar to the popular children’s book “Where’s Waldo”.

“Finding Jholly” is an illustrated game where readers have to spot the mascot dressed in a black and white stripped prison guard from a busy scene.

And just like the real life events that it has inspired, the book is about “a nationwide search adventure”.

Cops called on Chinese envoys as APEC summit tensions boil over

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea – The police were called when Chinese officials attempted to “barge” into the office of Papua New Guinea’s foreign minister, it emerged Sunday, as APEC summit tensions boiled over.

The Chinese delegates “tried to barge in” to Rimbink Pato’s Port Moresby office Saturday, in an eleventh-hour bid to influence a summit draft communique, but were denied entry, three sources with knowledge of the situation told AFP.

“Police were posted outside the minister’s office after they tried to barge in,” one source privy to summit negotiations told AFP, requesting anonymity.

The diplomatic incident came with tensions already high at a summit of Asian-Pacific leaders that has been overshadowed by a spat between the United States and China.

Pato had refused to meet with the delegates, according to a source, who said: “It’s not appropriate for the minister to negotiate solo with the Chinese. The Chinese negotiating officials know this.”

The minister himself sought to downplay the incident, telling AFP: “There wasn’t an issue.”

The Chinese delegation has yet to comment publicly on the incident but was set to hold a news conference later Sunday.

APEC nations usually agree on a joint statement but officials are struggling to bridge deep divides on trade policy and admit that a formal communique may not be issued.

This is not the first time Chinese officials have been involved in a tense incident at a regional meeting.

At the Pacific Islands Forum in September, Nauru’s president demanded China apologize after its delegation walked out of a meeting when the host refused to let an envoy speak until island leaders had finished.

“They’re not our friends. They just need us for their own purposes,” President Baron Waqa said at the time.

Cats tend to make some weird sounds at night, especially when fighting or when there’s a female in heat. But one cat from Japan decided to showcase its weird vocal range from out of nowhere.

While western culture tends to label cat sounds as “meow,” the Japanese label them as “nyao” or “nyaa.” A cat named Chobimaru had other things in mind when it went up to its owner and started going “loliloliloliloliiiiloli,” as reported by SoraNews24.

Twitter user LLR (@llritotomohiro) shared the odd behavior through a video tweet on Nov. 12. It turned out it wasn’t the first time Chobimaru went “loliloli” instead of “nyaa.” He wrote, “Chobimaru is talking again…. Scary.”

Video : Weird cat cries out ‘loliloli’ instead of ‘meow’

Rather than sounding cat-like, Chobimaru could be mistaken as some drunk person attempting to do a chant to summon some dark power into being. Chobimaru’s loud sniffing in between his “lolilolis” could even be heard, which could add to the confusion of “what” exactly was making the weird sound.

The clip has been viewed over 3.4 million times and other Japanese Twitter users were equally weirded out. One commenter wrote, “Sounds to me like he’s trying to cast a magic spell.”

Fellow cat owners who had similar experiences noted that whenever their cats sounded weird, it was usually a warning of incoming trouble. LLR thanked the commenters for their concern and reported that Chobimaru returned to normal after the cat had its fill of chanting “loliloli.”

Whatever it was that prompted Chobimaru’s chanting, it would be safe to say that most cat owners can just chalk it up to the wonderfully weird and mysterious ways of their feline overlords (pets).

Trump to visit as more than 1,000 missing in California fire

Breaking News November 18, 2018 01:00

Chico, United States

President Donald Trump was to arrive Saturday in California where more than 1,000 people are listed missing in the worst-ever wildfire to hit the wealthiest US state, which is at the forefront of resistance to Trump’s environmental and other policies.

The deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California’s history, the so-called Camp Fire, has now claimed 71 lives after authorities found eight additional sets of human remains.

The fire has devoured an area roughly the size of Chicago.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told reporters the number of people unaccounted for almost doubled from 631 to 1,011 in 24 hours as authorities received more reports of people missing, and as emergency calls made when the fire broke out are reviewed.

“I want you to understand that this is a dynamic list,” he told reporters. He said that on a positive note, 329 people who had been listed as missing since the fire broke out had so far been accounted for.

“The information I am providing you is raw data and we find there is the likely possibility that the list contains duplicate names,” he said, adding that some people who had escaped could be unaware they were listed as missing.

Paradise lost

The inferno erupted November 8, laying waste to the town of Paradise at the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains and sending thousands fleeing.

Trump would “meet with individuals impacted by the wildfires,” a White House spokeswoman said, but in an interview with Fox News ahead of his trip, the president said he was going “just to see the firefighters.”

In the interview he also reiterated an earlier claim that mismanagement of California’s forests was to blame for the fires, though he acknowledged climate change may have contributed “a little bit.”

“You need forest management. It has to be,” Trump told Fox.

Roslyn Roberts, 73, forced from her home in Paradise, said she voted for Trump but would disagree with him if she has the chance on Saturday.

“I would tell him that this fire has nothing to do with forest mismanagement. Thousands and thousands of homes got destroyed with no trees around,” she said amongst other evacuees at a shelter set up by the American Red Cross in a church.

In the community of Chico, just west of Paradise, volunteers had erected a tented encampment for others forced from their homes.

“Just trying to make it day by day. It’s all we can do. Just take the resources that they’re giving us and then try to make it the best,” Dustin Kimball, who worked at the Paradise cemetery, said in front of a tent.

Democratic Governor Jerry Brown’s administration and President Donald Trump’s Republicans have repeatedly clashed over issues including environmental and immigration regulations, as well as “net neutrality” governing access to the internet.

Days ago Trump threatened to cut federal funding to California over its alleged “gross mismanagement” of forests but late Friday he tweeted that he was looking forward to meeting Brown and his newly-elected successor Gavin Newsom.

“We are with you!” Trump said.

The Camp Fire has burned 146,000 acres (59,000 hectares) and was 50 percent contained by Friday, California’s fire service said.

Authorities said 47,200 people had been evacuated because of the fire and nearly 1,200 were living in shelters.

Losing hope

Smoke from the fire forced the closure of public schools in San Francisco on Friday and the shutdown of the city’s iconic cable cars as the Air Quality Index soared to 271, comparable to Dhaka, Bangladesh and worse than Kolkata, India.

A blanket of haze enveloped the region and the Golden Gate Bridge was shrouded in thick smog.

Much of the rescue work is now focused on Paradise, a community that was home to many retirees who found themselves unable to get out in time.

Hundreds of rescuers, backed by sniffer dogs, have been conducting a painstaking house-to-house search, as authorities collect DNA from relatives of the missing to help with body identification.

“I’m still going to keep on looking and hope for the best,” said Jhonathan Clark, who was hunting for his brother, sister-in-law, and nephew.

“My dad is starting to lose hope a little bit,” he told AFP.

Adding to the misery

Three other people have died in southern California in another blaze dubbed the Woolsey Fire, which engulfed parts of Malibu, destroying the homes of several celebrities.

That inferno, which is about two-thirds the size of the Camp Fire, was close to 80 percent contained by Friday, and authorities predicted they would have it under control by Monday.

Adding to the misery of Camp Fire survivors, an outbreak of the highly contagious norovirus has been reported at several shelters.

Public health officials said 41 people had been sick with vomiting and diarrhea as of Wednesday evening and 25 had to be hospitalized.

While the cause of the Camp Fire is still under investigation, a lawsuit has been filed against the local power company, PG&E, by fire victims claiming negligence.

Pence says US to partner in Papua New Guinea military base

Pence says US to partner in Papua New Guinea military base

Breaking News November 17, 2018 17:07

By Agence France-Presse
Port Moresby

The United States said Saturday it will join forces with Australia in the development of a new naval base in Papua New Guinea, a project seen as a move to curb China’s influence in the Pacific.

Australia, which has long-standing military ties with the US, has already announced plans to redevelop PNG’s Lombrum Naval Base on Manus Island.

China’s desire to build a military facility on Fiji’s Blackrock, Manus or Vanuatu has spooked western officials from Canberra to Washington, who fear it would tilt the balance of naval power in the South Pacific in Beijing’s favour.

They have been scrambling to respond with their own plans.

To that end, Vice President Mike Pence said Saturday on a visit to Papua New Guinea, which is hosting the APEC regional summit, that the US would join forces in the Australian project.

“The United States will partner with Papua New Guinea and Australia on their joint initiative at Lombrum Naval Base,” he said.

“We will work with these two nations to protect sovereignty and maritime rights in the Pacific Islands. ”

China has been showering billions of dollars in infrastructure loans on island nations in the Pacific, a region that is vital to international shipping and provides a stepping stone to project military and economic power.

Pence later told reporters the base would show US commitment to an “open and free Indo-Pacific” but would not been drawn on what US footprint there would be.

“Our commitment is to stand with countries across this region who are anxious to partner with us for security.”

Australia has been critical of Beijing’s “soft diplomacy” and rising influence in the region, and Prime Minister Scott Morrison warned this month that confrontation must not define China’s relationship with the US.

“Inevitably, in the period ahead, we will be navigating a higher degree of US-China strategic competition,” Morrison said in a speech where he navigated a careful line between the alliance with the US and engaging a more assertive China.

Australia — a member of the “Five Eyes” Western intelligence alliance — now finds itself in the middle of one of the 21st century’s geopolitical hotspots as a battle for influence in the South Pacific unfolds.

The Papua New Guinea naval base move came after reports that China had approached Vanuatu about the possibility of opening a military base there.

US Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday dismissed reports of a rift with his boss President Donald Trump, saying the pair laughed about the suggestion in a phone call.

Following a New York Times report that suggested Trump was privately questioning the loyalty of his deputy, Pence told reporters in Port Moresby that they had still had a good rapport.

“I’m just tempted not to dignified it with a comment,” he said after a pause, adding that the pair had spoken by phone and “it came up.”

“We had a good laugh,” said Pence. “We’ve got a very strong relationship.”

“I’ve been honoured to serve as his vice president, I was honoured when he asked me to run with him.”

The New York Times said Trump has taken to asking several advisors whether the vice president is loyal — which they say is usually a sign he has “grown irritated” with someone, according to the paper.

Trump has not openly suggested dropping Pence from the ticket with the 2020 presidential election rapidly approaching, the New York Times stressed.

But according to the paper, some advisors have suggested Trump could benefit from a running mate who would help him win support from women.

Pence pulls U-turn, will stay overnight in Papua New Guinea

Pence pulls U-turn, will stay overnight in Papua New Guinea

In a last-minute U-turn, US Vice President Mike Pence will spend the night in Papua New Guinea where he is attending a regional summit, changing plans to fly in and out of Australia which had led to complaints of a lack of committment.

Pence had originally been due to shuttle to the APEC talks from the northern Australian city of Cairns rather than stay overnight in Port Moresby, which is hosting the gathering for the first time.

But the White House confirmed that Pence would instead spend the night in the Pacific island nation, shrugging off its reputation for violence and petty crime.

“Staying in PNG is better for the schedule and the office was able to make it work, from a logistical and security standpoint,” a senior administration official told AFP.

The port city is effectively on lockdown with a heavy police presence and warships from the US, Australia and New Zealand patrolling offshore.

Due to security and a dearth of hotel rooms, most journalists and delegates are billetted on two hulking cruise ships moored in the harbour with ultra-tight security access.

Although the threat posed by terrorism in Papua New Guinea is considered minimal, the Melanesian country has developed a reputation for lawlessness.

Feared street gangs known as “raskols” have made carjackings common and the country has among the highest rates of rape and domestic violence in the world.

Pence’s decision to stay in Papua New Guinea now puts him in the same boat as China’s President Xi Jinping, whose delegation has locked down the Stanley Hotel where Chinese lanterns abound and a pagoda has been constructed in his honour.

Some of the leaders are thought to be staying at the Airways hotel — “one of the world’s most unique airport hotels”, according to its website.

Hotel guests describe security arrangements at the Airways as “immense” even without the APEC summit, complete with shotgun-toting guards at the gates.

“But that is nothing compared with what we see now,” a resident said on Saturday, citing snipers on the roof, parts of the hotel sealed off, road blocks and special clearance required for cars.

Cambodia genocide verdict a signal to other perpetrators: US

Cambodia genocide verdict a signal to other perpetrators: US

Breaking News November 17, 2018 15:16

By Agence France-Presse
Phnom Penh

The US has welcomed Cambodia’s landmark genocide verdict and said it served as a warning that perpetrators of mass atrocities, “even those at the highest levels”, will eventually face justice for their crimes.

A war crimes tribunal in Cambodia found the Khmer Rouge’s former head of state Khieu Samphan, 87, and “Brother Number Two” Nuon Chea, 92, guilty of genocide on Friday and sentenced them to life in prison.

The historic verdict comes nearly 40 years after the Khmer Rouge were expelled from Cambodia following a four-year reign of terror that left about a quarter of the population dead from starvation, mass executions, and overwork.

“Their crimes were numerous, calculated, and grave,” US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said, commending the courage of the victims and witnesses who testified during the trial.

“Let this be a message to other perpetrators of mass atrocities, even those at the highest levels, including former heads of state, that such actions will not be tolerated and they will ultimately be brought to justice,” she said in a statement.

Cambodia’s neighbour Myanmar has come under fire in recent months for its handling of the Rohingya crisis, which United Nations investigators believe amounts to “genocide” given the atrocities perpetrated on the stateless Muslim minority.

Myanmar has denied the allegations but UN investigators have urged that the case be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for investigation and prosecution.

Despite the show of support for war crimes prosecution, the US is one of the few Western countries that is not signed up to the ICC, which has a mandate to investigate the gravest offences including genocide and crimes against humanity.

The country’s refusal to be party to the body erupted again following an ICC request to open an investigation into alleged war crimes by the US military and intelligence officials in Afghanistan, especially over the abuse of detainees.

White House National Security Advisor John Bolton called the Hague-based rights body “unaccountable” and threatened to arrest and sanction judges and other officials of the court if it moved to charge any American.
