Lining the BTS routes throughout the city, Bangkok’s popular shopping centres are famous for their spectacular light decorations.

This year, MBK Centre is adding to the mix with its “New Year Celebration 2019 Tuk Tuk Wonderland”

The tuk tuk, one of Thailand’s national emblems has been transformed and incorporated in the 19-metre-tall Christmas tree. The convertible tuk tuk rolls out from the tree, pulling a big box of presents, wrapped in the word “Thailand,” to bring joy to both Thai and foreign visitors. The land of amusement and happiness is also surrounded by nine chairs, decorated with elephants of prosperity whose eyes are the headlights of the tuk tuk, a luminous tuk tuk tunnel, and numerous chairs of various designs and colours spread out all over the place.

“MBK is committed to bringing the best experience possible to our customers, while creating excitement and amusement at every step throughout our mall. The end-of-year festivities, therefore, feature both interior decoration and the installation of the Christmas tree outside the mall on the theme, ‘Mbk Center New Year Celebration 2019 Tuk Tuk Wonderland’. Together, MBK will be the destination that all Thai and foreign visitors can visit, take pictures, and count down to the New Year’s together,” says the centre’s Somphol Tripopnart.

Saran Yenpanya, the man behind the design of the wonderland and the owner of 56th Studio, adds: “I wanted to introduce a Christmas tree that is filled with joy, Thai flavours, and the uniqueness of MBK Centre.

“The tuk tuk definitely reflects Thainess that foreigners know and love. Various details are embellished with styles and fun, transforming itself into Tuk Tuk Wonderland. Different parts are utilised to retell an interesting story to celebrate Christmas in a Thai style that perfectly integrates both Thai and Western qualities.”

MBK is an important landmark for tourists from all over the world who are determined to shop and have a photograph taken with the “Makrub” and “Maja” sculptures.

On the path to sustainability

A school principal in Krabi explains why schools must switch from a top-down model to an all-inclusive flat management structure and stress leadership at all levels if sustainable development is to be ensured

In his 19 years in a school leadership role, Wasan Panya has seen his share of struggling schools. Hailing from Phetchabun province in the north of Thailand, he somehow found himself as a school principal in the southern province of Krabi, where he felt like a stranger.

The first time Wasan stepped into the dilapidated building of Krabi’s tiny Baan Thum-Phet School in 2008, noting the cobwebs in every corner, the poor sanitation, the lack of any school supplies or furniture other than shabby old desks and chairs, he knew he had to do all he could to save the school, and, more importantly, the children learning there. He couldn’t have been assigned a more difficult school for his first full-fledged principal position, but he remained undeterred. “I wasn’t shaken,” he recalls. “I knew I had to fight.”

School principal Wasan Panya addresses the 19th UnescoAPIED International Conference

And so, with a staff of four teachers and a limited budget of just Bt30,000 per semester, plus Bt80,000 worth of debt inherited from the previous administration, Wasan set about utilising the network he’d built to find people who could provide support and help him improve the school.

“First, you just need to make whatever doesn’t work, work,” he explains. “It doesn’t have to be beautiful.”

Wasan is a school principal legacy – his father was a school principal, as was his grandfather. As a child, he felt inspired by seeing his father ride his horse to school in a far-off district every day, witnessing how much he sacrificed for the school and the community.

“I’d see my father sitting and eating with his staff,” he says. “I’d be somewhere near the meeting room and see him sitting at the head of the table. I’d watch how he talked to the teachers, and as a kid, I soaked it all in. Afterwards, he’d invite them to dinner and my mum would cook for all of them.”

This image of his father as a warm and caring leader stuck with him as he started out on his own school leadership journey. “I came back to this when I became a manager and when I was learning management. This work that my father did, the stories he told about the work his own father did, it was a great example for me.”

“Nothing predicts the sustained improvement of a school more than the active, passionate engagement of its teachers in their own learning.”  School leadership expert Professor Philip Hallinger

Moving away from a more traditional notion of school leadership, one of top-down authority and leading with control and force, what’s needed now is a school leader who is a coach, facilitator and mentor with high emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal skills. “The school leader used to be on a pedestal, higher than the other teachers,” Wasan says. “I did away with the formalities, I sat alongside the teachers and made it a flat management structure.”

He is quick to say that leading by force doesn’t work and that it’s better to lead by example. “You can’t use power, especially as a leader; you have to be softer.”

In the 21st century, it’s also crucial that schools and their leadership contribute to sustainable development. One of the 23 working principles for sustainable development of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej that Wasan took to heart was the concept of “exploding from inside”, meaning that development must start from one’s internal thoughts, knowledge and ambition, not from external factors or from someone else telling you to do so. According to this principle, a person or a community should be developed and strengthened from within rather than trying to put external developments upon them, and what’s most important is that the person or community is open and willing to change. Wasan has found this particularly relevant in his school leadership role.

“Before development can happen, you and your co-workers have to be a team. You have to understand your shared purpose, and then take action together. Start from the heart. Only then can sustainability happen.”

But what happens when the leadership efforts are not sustained? To Wasan’s dismay, under new management, Baan Thum- Phet School was shut down. “Sustainability lives and dies by the leader,” he says. “If the next leader doesn’t continue on the sustainable path, then it’s over.”

This raises new questions: How do we develop school leaders who will sustain quality education for the future? What does this kind of leadership entail?

School leadership expert Professor Philip Hallinger talks about sustainable leadership as Bhutanese participants Dorji Nidup, right, principal of Lhuentse Higher Secondary School, Lhuentse and Udai N Bhattarai, left, principal of Tashidingkha Middle Secondary School, Punakha look on.

School leadership expert and Thailand Sustainable Development Foundation (TSDF) chair Professor Philip Hallinger agrees that, when it comes to sustainable leadership, the emphasis must be on the leadership and not just the leader.

“Leadership has to be at all levels of the organisation,” he says, referring to distributed leadership, which increases the leadership capacity in the school by extending beyond principals and senior managers to include other staff and teachers. This harnesses collective strengths and expertise for the betterment of the school, regardless of hierarchy or years of experience.

In addition, school leaders must encourage learning not only in the students, but also teachers. According to Hallinger, nothing predicts the sustained improvement of a school more than the active, passionate engagement of its teachers in their own learning. In doing so, leaders must be models of learning themselves. Hallinger urges school leaders to be the “head learner” – a model learner – and to take on the challenge and responsibility to inspire, encourage, and support the learning of their staff and teachers.

“Remind teachers how important their work is every day. There is no role in society that will have more to do with the sustainability of our planet and our societies than teachers. But they have to see that and remember it, and that really requires leadership.”

Wasan agrees that the success of a school counts not only on its leader, but also on those who support the leader, whether they are teachers, staff, students, parents or even the community. He saw that when he received overwhelming support after reforming Baan Thum Phet School, and to this day, he’s still very appreciative of his co-workers at his current post at Muangkrabi School.

“A smart principal listens to his or her vice principal,” he says. “I don’t do anything on my own. My vice principals and I, we work as a team.”

Today, Muangkrabi School is a model example of a flourishing sustainable and future-ready school. The use of paper is discouraged and documents are distributed digitally by downloading with QR codes. ICT tools are utilised not just for the sake of having ICT tools, but for the benefit of the students. Every semester, the school has an open house showcasing students’ work and an open class for parents and potential students’ parents to observe the teaching in the classroom.

The school received the Asean Eco Schools Award in 2012. And Wasan is most comfortable being a role model to other school leaders, documenting the school’s innovative practices and achievements online.

“You have to be a PR person too,” he laughs.

These kinds of practices are needed now more than ever if we are to provide quality education for future generations. “The idea of sustainable leadership is nowhere more relevant than in schools,” Hallinger adds. “It’s the values and virtues that we pass on to the next generation that will determine the sustainability of life on this earth and the sustainability of our organisations and societies.”

Learning to Lead

– Both Wasan and Hallinger were speakers at the 19th Unesco-APIED International Conference this year. Hallinger gave the keynote Raja Roy Singh Lecture on the importance of sustainable leadership in schools, while Wasan was a presenter during a session on technological innovations on the ground.

– Unesco Bangkok has been organising the conference since 1995, providing a forum for dialogue and information sharing on educational innovations and best practices in Asia-Pacific and beyond.

ADDITIONAL BOUTS ANNOUNCED FOR ONE: ETERNAL GLORY SET FOR 19 JANUARY IN JAKARTA

sports December 22, 2018 10:05

By Agencies

Jakarta –   ONE Championship™ (ONE), has just announced additional bouts at ONE: ETERNAL GLORY, set for Istora Senayan in Jakarta on 19 January.

In the main event, reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua “The Passion” Pacio of the Philippines will defend his title against Yosuke Saruta of Japan.

Joshua “The Passion” Pacio, who hails from Baguio City, Philippines, captured the ONE Strawweight World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over former titleholder Yoshitaka Naito at ONE: CONQUEST OF HEROES last September. It was an epic rematch between the two warriors, as Pacio put together the performance of a lifetime to claim the prestigious title.

The 22-year-old Filipino has shown tremendous improvement over the past few years leading up to his title reign. With the ONE Strawweight World Championship firmly in his grasp, he looks to make a successful first defense at ONE’s first event of 2019.

Standing in his way is Japan’s Yosuke Saruta, a Shooto Strawweight World Champion who signed with ONE Championship after defeating several of the best athletes Shooto and Pancrase had to offer. Saruta has had one goal since he joined the world’s largest martial arts organization, and that is to become the ONE Strawweight World Champion. If he can defeat Pacio, he will have achieved his long-time goal.

Featherweight prodigy Christian “The Warrior” Lee of Singapore and veteran martial artist Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly of the Philippines first met at ONE: BEYOND THE HORIZON last September. However, their bout ended in controversy when Lee was disqualified for the inadvertent use of a suplex maneuver. At ONE: ETERNAL GLORY, the two athletes get the chance to set the record straight.

Lee is the younger brother of ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee and is one of the promotion’s top featherweight talents. Kelly is a member of the famed Team Lakay camp, and he trains alongside a collection of ONE World Champions including Pacio, Eduard Folayang, Geje Eustaquio, and Kevin Belingon. Both Lee and Kelly aim to shoot up the ranks, and a victory for either man in this highly-anticipated match-up would certainly move the winner up the ladder.

Indonesian national wushu champion Priscilla Hertati Lumban Goal had an exceptional 2018, competing for a total of six times and going 5-1 on the year. To kick off 2019, she will face Indian national wushu champion Puja Tomar in a women’s atomweight showdown.

Lumban Gaol has emerged as one of Indonesia’s fastest rising stars over the past 12 months, having turned in a series of spectacular performances to captivate the local audience. She aims to make a statement in her next bout and possibly a run at the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Title. Tomar, however, stands in her way and looks to steal the Indonesian’s thunder with a victory of her own.

Milan, Italy’s Joseph “The Hurricane” Lasiri is back in action against Jonathan Haggerty of England in a ONE Super Series Muay Thai contest.

Lasiri began training in Muay Thai at the age of 17 and went on to become a World Champion in the discipline. He is a former WBA Super Bantamweight and WBC Interim Super Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion. Haggerty, on the other hand, is an ISKA Super Featherweight World Champion and is considered one of the top prospects in the striking arena. The two are ready to bring the crowd to its feet in what should be an action-packed flyweight encounter.

Indonesia’s Stefer Rahardian is making his long-awaited return to action at home against the Philippines’ Robin “The Ilonggo” Catalan. The two are scheduled for a strawweight battle that provides fans with an interesting clash of styles.

Rahardian is the former ONE Indonesia Flyweight Tournament Champion and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist under the lineage of the legendary Carlson Gracie. The Indonesian warrior will need every bit of his grappling skills to face Catalan, a former wushu and Muay Thai World Champion who plans to test Rahardian’s striking.

Two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu No Gi World Champion Bruno Pucci of Brazil looks to put together the first win streak of his ONE Championship career when he takes on Japanese warrior Kotetsu “No Face” Boku in a featherweight contest.

Pucci defeated China’s Xie Chao last November, impressively claiming victory via first-round guillotine choke. The grappling specialist is always dangerous on the mat. However, Pucci will need every bit of his grappling ability in order to defeat the veteran Boku. “No Face” brings nearly two decades of competitive experience to the table, and he is also a former ONE Lightweight World Champion.

The Netherlands’ Anthony “The Archangel” Engelen made a successful return to the ONE Championship stage in 2018, finishing both Meas Meul and Jimmy Yabo in the first round. He will take on Cambodia’s Thai Rithy at ONE: ETERNAL GLORY.

Engelen, who is based out of Jakarta, joined ONE Championship in December 2015 after becoming the IFC Lightweight Champion. He looks to extend his two-bout win streak by defeating Rithy. Rithy is a KWC Featherweight Champion and a striking specialist well-versed in the Cambodian martial art of Kun Khmer.

Kickboxing world champion Florent Kaouachi of France will take on Steve “The Smashing Machine” McKinnon in a ONE Super Series kickboxing contest.

Kaouachi is a former French national kickboxing champion and is one of the world’s top strikers. He began training in martial arts at 15 years of age and proved to be a natural talent. McKinnon, in contrast, owns a black belt in Shotokan Karate and began his professional kickboxing career at age 16. Along the way, he has been decorated with accomplishments such as winning the 2008 WBC Muay Thai World Super Cruiserweight Title.

Former Afghan bantamweight and featherweight champion Ahmad Qais Jasoor will be taking on Japanese martial arts veteranMasakazu “Ashikan Judan” Imanari in a featherweight contest.

Jasoor is skilled in both boxing and combat sambo, and he is a two-division champion in regional promotion HFC. He joined ONE Championship in June 2018 as one of the top martial arts talents to emanate from the Middle East. Conversely, Imanari is an experienced veteran with over 50 professional mixed martial arts bouts on his record. Most recently, Imanari proved that he only gets better with age after finishing Radeem Rahman via first round submission.

Also, top lightweight talents are set to collide as Kharun “The Predator” Atlangeriev of Russia takes on Koji “The Commander” Ando of Japan.

The two incredibly talented athletes both feature a well-rounded skill set and will look to put on a show at ONE: ETERNAL GLORY. Atlangeriev is a former Russian sambo champion and is dangerous on the feet as well as on the mat. Ando sports a similar style but is more careful with his approach to both offense and defense. The Japanese martial artist defeated Roger Huerta in one of the best ever match-ups of 2015, and also owns victories over Rafael Nunes, Zorobabel Moreira, and former ONE Featherweight World Champion Narantungalag Jadambaa.

Veteran competitor from Indonesia, “The Iceman” Yohan Mulia Legowo, is set to return to action against Malaysia’s AJ “Pyro” Lias Mansor in a featherweight contest.

Legowo is a highly-versatile martial artist with experience in kung fu, sanda, boxing, wrestling, judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He has also competed in professional Muay Thai in Thailand. Mansor is the well-respected head coach of the renowned Borneo Tribal Squad in Kota Kinabalu. He is responsible for guiding ONE Championship talents such as Ann “Athena” Osman, Audreylaura Boniface, and just recently the Philippines’ Jeremy Miado. After a lengthy absence from competition, “Pyro” makes his much-awaited return to the ONE Championship cage.

Local martial arts talents Riski “Kong” Umar and Aziz Calim are set to do battle in a three-round strawweight contest.

The two Indonesian martial artists are known for their aggressive striking styles. Umar began his martial arts career with Muay Thai in Thailand, and he has spent time at both Bali MMA and Tiger Muay Thai. Conversely, Calim found a home at Han Academy under veteran Yohan Mulia Legowo where he honed his skills in a wide range of disciplines including boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Thai No 1 shocked at stayaway fans

Kiradech in disbelief as Japanese fans outnumber Thais in glamorous event.

Chon Buri – Hosts Thailand took first-day honours over Japan but Thai ace Kiradech Aphibarnrat urged local fans to turn up in greater numbers at the US$1.2 million Amata Friendship Cup at the Amata Spring Country Club.

The hosts scored two and a half points from the morning’s foursomes before doubling their lead in the afternoon in the inaugural edition of the mixed team event to lead 5-3 overnight.

Even though the Thais took a two-point overnight lead, it was the visitors who had more support from their fans, prompting Thai No 1 Kiradech to urge home fans to show up in greater numbers and get behind their team.

“I was a bit sad that there were more Japanese fans out there today when this is our home tournament,” said Kiradech, who teamed up with teenage prodigy Atthaya Thitikul in the foursomes against Satoshi Kodaira  and Yuri Yoshida, a match that ended all-square.

“I really hope to see more Thai fans over the weekend.

“We played quite well and had four birdies without a bogey. But we were facing two players who were playing incredibly well too. However it ended up being all square. At least we earned half a point,” added the world No38.

Thailand got off to a flying start in the morning’s foursomes, the superb pairing of Prom Meesawat and rising star Pannarat Thanapolboonyaras seeing off Masahiro Kawamura and Mami Fukuda 2 up, followed by another point from three-time Asian Tour No 1 Thongchai Jaidee and Thidapa Suwannapura, winner of the LPGA Marathon Classic in July, who beat Kodai Ichihara and Sakura Koiwai 1 up.

Japan’s only win in the foursomes competition was by Ryuko Tokimatsu and Erika Hara of Japan, who beat Prayad Marksaeng and Moriya Jutanugarn 6&5.

In the afternoon’s fourballs, Thailand stretched their lead to 3-1 when young gun Jazz Janewattananond and Thai No3 Pornanong Phatlum beat Hideto Tanihara and Nasa Hataoka 3&2.

“We are like ham and egg – when one played badly, the other played well,” said Jazz, winner of the Queen’s Cup in Pattaya in July. “I like playing with Pornanong and we will team up again on Saturday.”

Final-hole bogey denies tourists

Japan reduced the arrears to 3-2 when Tokimatsu and Hara earned their second point of the day, beating Prom Meesawat and Pannarat 4&3.

Prayad and world No 1 Ariya Jutanugarn fought back from one down to share the honours with Kodai Ichihara and Fumika Kawagishi but only after the Japanese duo carded a bogey on the final hole.

“Luckily, the Japanese players missed their shots, one in a bunker and other into the water, which opened a chance for us. So I told Ariya to just hit it on to the green and she did it,” said the 52-year-old Prayad, who bemoaned the fact he had to play 36 holes in one day.

Ariya, meanwhile, was thrilled to finally pair up with the three-time Japan Senior Tour No 1, one of the Kingdom’s legendary golfers.

“I couldn’t control the ball at the beginning. But we finally fought our way back which is really satisfying,” said the 10-time LPGA Tour winner.

In the last match of the day, Sadom Kaewkanjana and Moriya Jutanugarn  beat Yuto Katsuragawa and Sakura Koiwai 1 up to ensure the Thais retained their lead.

Two arrested over London airport drone disruption: police

London

Two people have been arrested in connection with the “criminal use of drones” at London Gatwick Airport, police said Saturday, after three days of disruption in which and tens of thousands of people missed their flights.

“As part of our ongoing investigations into the criminal use of drones which has severely disrupted flights in and out of Gatwick Airport, Sussex Police made two arrests just after 10:00pm (2200 GMT) on December 21”, the force’s Superintendent James Collis said.

Drones were first sighted hovering around Britain’s second-busiest air hub on Wednesday, grinding the runway to a standstill and causing chaos for more than 120,000 people in the run-up to Christmas.

A statement released on Sussex Police force’s website said the probe was ongoing, and officers were using “a range of tactics” to “build resilience to detect and mitigate further incursions from drones”.

“We continue to urge the public, passengers and the wider community around Gatwick to be vigilant and support us by contacting us immediately if they believe they have any information that can help us in bringing those responsible to justice,” the statement added.

“Every line of enquiry will remain open to us until we are confident that we have mitigated further threats to the safety of passengers.”

No sex assault charges for Chinese tech billionaire: US prosecutor

ASEAN+ December 22, 2018 07:15

By Agence France-Presse
Chicago

Chinese tech billionaire and JD.com founder Richard Liu will not face criminal charges over a rape accusation, a prosecutor in the US state of Minnesota announced Friday.

The office of the Hennepin County Attorney announced that an investigation of the allegations against Liu found the case had “profound evidentiary problems.”

“As we reviewed surveillance video, text messages, police body camera video and witness statements, it became clear that we could not meet our burden of proof and, therefore, we could not bring charges,” County Attorney Mike Freeman said in a statement.

Freeman said the case was typical of many other sexual assault investigations in that Liu maintained the sex was consensual.

Liu — the 45-year-old billionaire founder of Chinese e-commerce juggernaut JD.com — was arrested in Minneapolis on August 31 while he was in the US as part of a PhD program in business administration offered by the University of Minnesota.

He was accused of rape by a 21-year-old female student who had dinner with him and a group of others prior to the alleged incident.

Among the evidence investigators reviewed was body camera video from police officers who initially talked with Liu and the alleged victim, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The cameras captured portions of conversations in Mandarin between Liu and the woman, the prosecutor said.

“As is the case in many sexual assault incidents, it was a complicated situation,” Freeman said.

“Because we do not want to re-victimize the young woman, we will not be going into detail.”

The United States called on China Friday to free two Canadians detained in apparent retaliation for Canada’s arrest on Washington’s behalf of an executive of Chinese telecom giant Huawei.

We “express our deep concern for the Chinese government’s detention of two Canadians earlier this month and call for their immediate release,” State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said.

“Canada, a country governed by the rule of law, is conducting a fair, unbiased, and transparent legal proceeding with respect to Ms. Meng Wanzhou, the Chief Financial Officer of Huawei,” Palladino said.

“Canada respects its international legal commitments by honoring its extradition treaty with the United States.”

The head of Goldman Sachs defended the investment bank’s handling of the scandal-plagued Malaysian fund 1MDB on Friday, saying much criticism of the financial giant was unfair.

“I cannot stress enough how integrity is a cornerstone of our culture,” newly-installed Chief Executive David Solomon said in a year-end message to employees.

He stressed that the bank was working with authorities to bring to justice the culprits behind a scandal that has roiled Malaysia.

Goldman helped 1MDB to issue $6.5 billion of bonds but Kuala Lumpur accuses the bank and its former employees of misappropriating $2.7 billion during the process.

Malaysia on Monday filed criminal charges against Goldman Sachs and two of its former employees over the alleged theft of funds used to buy everything from yachts to artwork. The fraud that involved former Malaysian leader Najib Razak, contributed to the last government’s shock defeat at May elections.

Former Goldman banker Ng Chong Hwa was formerly charged in the case on Wednesday. Malaysia has also taken steps extradite Ng to the United States to face US criminal charges.

Solomon said he was limited on how much to share on the ongoing probe, but defended the bank’s role in the scandal, which he said had “outraged” him.

“While we understand the anger and skepticism, we do not believe that the criticism directed at us accurately reflects who we were then or who we are now,” Solomon said, according to the transcript of the video message obtained by AFP and confirmed by a Goldman spokesman.

“We believe our culture and our processes around our due diligence and compliance was strong at the time, and is even stronger today.”

Solomon, who took over the top spot at Goldman in October, said the bank conducted due diligence of the bond offerings.

“What we did not anticipate was that a group of individuals and foreign officials would orchestrate such a brazen scheme,” he said.
