Quitting smoking for the late Monarch

lifestyle December 13, 2018 12:55

By The Nation

With the aim of helping three million smokers who would like to quit in three years as a tribute to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Johnson & Johnson (Thailand) recently launched the “Quit for King Campaign” in support of the lobby initiated by Ministry of Public Health in collaboration with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (THPF) and Village Health Volunteer.

In 2016, Johnson & Johnson initiated a Quit Smoking campaign by providing advice from professional pharmacists at participating drug stores nationwide. Following a successful campaign last year, the company has extended the campaign to encourage more smokers to use the benefits of this application to quit for good as a tribute to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The Smoke Free app gives users a variety of support tools when they are on the go, including advice, suggestions, and tips to help them tackle every aspect of their stop-smoking journey – from handling cravings to boosting motivation. When smokers intend to quit for good, the application can help track their smoke-free days and how much money they’ve saved; learn all about their cravings and triggers to help them quit; accept challenges and achieve milestones along the way, with interactive distractions that help them when cravings strike. Smokers on their quit journey can also call on their Team Incredible – the people they know who will keep them on track.

Commenting on the programme, Community Pharmacy Association (Thailand)’s Dr Sirirat Tunpichart, said: “Smoking has become a serious health threat and concerted efforts are needed to deal with it. It is our responsibility to provide aid, follow up and support to smokers who intend to quit. Smoke Free TH by Johnson & Johnson (Thailand) will be very helpful for optimising our community pharmacist education programmes and enhancing the performance of our smoking cessation clinics (a nationwide network). We are proud to support the Three Million Three Years Quit for the King Campaign and look forward to contributing in a meaningful way to support the campaign goals for smoking cessation in Thailand

The app is available now on Google Play.

Vietnam beat Malaysia at home to claim Suzuki Cup

An early goal by Nguyen Anh Duc proved decisive as Vietnam beat Malaysia 1-0 at My Dinh National Stadium on Saturday to lift the AFF Suzuki Cup for the second time.

The Vietnamese had allowed a two-goal lead to slip in a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Kuala Lumpur last Tuesday but Anh Duc restored their advantage when he volleyed home from close range after only six minutes.

Goalkeeper Dang Van Lam made a series of fine saves to preserve the home side’s advantage as they won 3-2 on aggregate and claimed the ASEAN regional title for the first time since 2008.

Vietnam had the benefit of two away goals from the first leg and they made an excellent start in Hanoi, taking the lead when Nguyen Quang Hai’s chip from the left found Anh Duc, whose left-footed volley was too powerful for goalkeeper Farizal Marlias to keep out of his net.

Mohamadou Sumareh went close to levelling for Malaysia in the 11th minute with a clever back-heel which went narrowly wide, while Do Hung Dung should have done better for the hosts in the 33rd minute after he received the ball unmarked on the edge of the box but shot wastefully wide.

Van Lam was called into action just before half-time to tip Syahmi Safari’s first-time effort over his crossbar and he showed fine reflexes again early in the second to bat Sumareh’s header clear before making another fine save to keep out Safawi Rasid’s free-kick.

Ten players –- six Vietnamese and four Malaysians –- were booked in the scrappy encounter which culminated in the dismissal of Shahrul Saad in stoppage time when he received his second yellow card after committing a foul on the halfway line to snuff out a Vietnamese counter-attack.

Qatar unveils 2022 World Cup final stadium design

Qatar unveils 2022 World Cup final stadium design

sports December 16, 2018 07:21

Qatar on Saturday revealed the design for the stadium that will in four years’ time host the first ever World Cup finals game to be played in the Middle East.

The 80,000-seat Lusail Stadium — also the venue for the 2022 World Cup final — was revealed in an elaborate ceremony attended by the country’s ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and other dignitaries, including the United Nations’ secretary-general, Antonio Guterres.

Hassan al-Thawadi, the head of the country’s World Cup organising body, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, called the unveiling a “significant milestone”.

“Every milestone for us is always important,” he said.

“The announcement of the design of the stadium is very, very important… it’s the last stadium as well.”

The Lusail Stadium is the eighth and final venue to be revealed for the Qatar World Cup.

Designed by British architects Foster and Partners, the stadium is said to take its inspiration from Arab craftmanship, said the committee.

It also stands close to the site of the former home of Qatar’s founder, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani al-Thani.

The stadium sits in the completely new city of Lusail, a $45 billion (40 billion euro) project located 15 kilometres (nine miles) north of the capital Doha.

It is one of the largest infrastructure schemes undertaken by Qatar, which is undergoing enormous transformation for the World Cup.

Construction work, in the shape of a Qatari/Chinese joint project, is set to finish in 2020.

The unveiling of Lusail comes as world football’s governing body FIFA is still considering whether to expand the tournament from 32 teams to 48.

If that expansion occurs — there is currently a feasibility study underway — it is likely that tournament games will be shared among other countries in the region.

“Ultimately the decision (on expansion) will be made with FIFA and Qatar,” said Thawadi.

Liverpool are the ‘lucky ones’ moans Mourinho

sports December 16, 2018 07:10

By AFP

Jose Mourinho has claimed Liverpool are “the lucky ones” as they bid to end a wait of nearly three decades to win the English league title.

Mourinho and his Manchester United side visit Anfield on Sunday with Liverpool 16 points ahead of their bitter rivals.

But Mourinho points to perceived good fortune enjoyed by Liverpool in recent victories over Everton, Bournemouth and Napoli as evidence they have lady luck on their side as they challenge for their first championship since 1990.

“Of course, they are very confident about themselves,” Mourinho told reporters. “They are top of the league, they have this feeling of – I know that feeling well – the feeling of the lucky ones where everything goes in your direction.

“They know how they beat Everton, they know that the last match, the opening goal was offside, and they know that against Napoli in the last seconds they could be out.

“They have this feeling that I also had when my teams were top of the league and it looks like everything goes in your direction.”

Klopp’s side certainly benefitted from a stroke of luck when a defensive error gifted them a stoppage-time victory in the Merseyside derby, although a clearly offside opening goal by Mohamed Salah at Bournemouth was only the first of four scored by the rampant Reds.

And, while the midweek victory over Napoli was only confirmed when Alisson made a spectacular late save, the success carried last season’s Champions League runners-up through to the last 16 and has further raised the mood of optimism around Anfield.

– Weaknesses –

Not that Mourinho expects his rivals to take inconsistent United lightly when they meet.

“I think they are obviously very, very confident. But I think they are not stupid,” he said.

“They also know that we have our weaknesses, our strengths, and I think they will respect our strengths. I think if they don’t do that I will be happy with that.

“They know that they need every point if they want to be champions so I think they are professionals and being professional is respecting Manchester United. They know that we can go there and win.”

Mourinho, meanwhile, claims he does not yet know if he will have money to spend in the January transfer window which opens in barely two weeks’ time.

Unsourced reports have claimed repeatedly in recent months that the United manager has been frustrated at the lack of backing he has received from his club’s owners in the transfer market.

Last January, the window proved a busy one for Mourinho, as he completed the signing of Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez.

And, although that particular transfer has yet to prove a success, the Portuguese manager is clearly keen to do some more business next month.

“I don’t know. I don’t know if we are going to have new players – I would like to – but I don’t know if it is possible or not,” he said.

“It depends on the club. I don’t know and, honestly, I’m focused on my job of playing Liverpool and next week playing Cardiff.”

Mourinho insisted he is not concerned by the obvious lack of progress being made by his club in his two and a half years in charge.

“I’m not frustrated because my work is to demand from players that they give everything they have and what I demand – I only demand things that I can give myself,” he said.

“So what I ask the players to do – that’s what I do. You have to work hard, you have to work on your limits. It’s my job.”

POOM READY FOR FINAL SHOWDOWN WITH STENSON AT BNI INDONESIAN MASTERS

Jakarta – Thailand’s Poom Saksansin, dubbed the ‘assassin’ by Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, will have another chance to take down the Major winner when they are paired together in the final group of the BNI Indonesian Masters presented by Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN), PT.Lautan Luas.Tbk and Bank Mandiri on Sunday.

Poom caused one of the one of the biggest upsets early in the year when he defeated Henson at the EurAsia Cup in Malaysia at the start of the year.

The 25-year-old Thai is looking for another repeat after he held on to his overnight lead by posting a two-under-par 70 to take a three-shot advantage over his idol, Stenson.

Playing in Indonesia for the first time, Stenson carded the lowest round of the day with a 68 to take second place with his three-day total of 13-under-par 203 at the Asian Tour season-ending event.

The Major winner is ready to put up another gallant fight to deny Poom of having bragging rights over him again at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club.

Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond snatched the outright third place after returning with a 69 to put himself within sights of ending his year inside the top-10 on the Habitat for Humanity standings.

Panuphol, who earned his Asian Tour breakthrough in Indonesia last year, was pleased with his third round efforts after signing for a 70 that placed him in a share of fourth place with defending champion Justin Rose and compatriot Jakraphan Premsirigorn.

With seven shots separating him and Poom heading into the final 18 holes, Panuphol is aware of the challenges ahead and is determined to surmount a late charge.

Olympic silver medallist P.V. Sindhu will face Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in Sunday’s decider at the badminton World Tour Finals for a share of the $1.5 million prize money.

The sixth-ranked Indian has been in imperious form all week in the Chinese city of Guangzhou and made it a fourth victory with a bruising defeat of Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon.

The 23-year-old Sindhu, renowned for her never-say-die attitude, needed all her resolve to finally see off Ratchanok 21-16, 25-23 in a captivating semi-final.

“I’m quite happy with my fitness level this week. It’s too bad that I made bad decisions on some shots. It’s been a great year for me though,” said Ratchanok after completing her last match of the seasson.

Thai players also lost in the mixed doubles as Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taeratanachai were sent packing 21-19 14-21 12-21 by Chinese Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong in the semi-finals.

In the other last-four clash on Saturday in the women’s draw, Okuhara, a place above Sindhu at five in the world, emerged from an all-Japanese clash against Akane Yamaguchi.

Okuhara defeated her compatriot, who is ranked two in the world, 21-17, 21-14.

The men’s semi-finals were due to take place later Saturday.

Japan’s world champion Kento Momota plays Son Wan-ho of South Korea and surprise package Sameer Verma of India takes on Shi Yuqi of China.

Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel and Shinji Okazaki met with Great Britain’s Wheelchair Rugby team at King Power Stadium on Thursday, to officially launch the 2019 King Power Quad Nations tournament.

It returns to Leicester’s Morningside Arena in March, following the success of the inaugural event in February of this year, which attracted more than 5,000 supporters to the city.

The USA were crowned overall winners of the tournament after beating Australia in the Final, while Great Britain were denied a bronze medal by Japan.

Leicester City’s owners, King Power, are once again the title sponsors for the tournament, which underlines their commitment to bringing world-class sport to the region and gives the city a chance to showcase its ability to host international events.

The tournament takes place over three days and sees four of the world’s best wheelchair rugby teams compete – including Great Britain, Canada, France and Japan, who won gold at the World Wheelchair Rugby Championships in Sydney this summer.

Senior Executive Vice President of King Power International and CEO of Leicester City Football Club, Susan Whelan, said:“King Power is very proud of its associations to world class sport and to the city of Leicester, so we’re honoured to support the Wheelchair Rugby Quad Nations for a second year. The 2018 event drew thousands of people from all over the world to witness some outstanding matches and I’m sure 2019 will be even bigger and better.

“It takes a remarkable level of dedication and commitment to reach an elite standard in any sport, but there is something additional to be admired about athletes with the passion and determination to overcome disability and succeed on the international stage. The tournament will be a great spectacle for the city, which I’m sure will be extremely proud to play host to another world class sporting event.”

Widely known as ‘Murderball’, the supercharged and brutal sport is fast-paced and exciting, with players competing in specially designed wheelchairs.

For Team GB, the tournament is an important opportunity to put down a marker ahead of next year’s European Championships in Denmark, where they will look to defend their crown.

CEO of Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby, David Pond, said:“We are delighted to return to Leicester for this fantastic tournament. All teams were overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome we received by the people of Leicester when we played the first King Power Quad Nations in the city and we are hoping for even bigger crowds this time. We are also really appreciative of King Power who have come forward again to sponsor the event, so a big thank you to them. Spectators will see the game at the very highest level and it’s fantastic that World Champions, Japan, will be joining us.”

The King Power Quad Nations tournament will be held at Leicester’s Morningside Arena between Friday 1 March and Sunday 3 March, 2019.

Asia has only 63 high ranked universities according to the recent US News University Ranking.

The list ranks 500 universities out of which the highest numbers of high ranked universities are in the US with 134 universities.

The rankings take into account schools’ research performance, as well as their ratings by members of the academic community around the world and in Asia.

China leads the region with 26 universities that figure in the list of high ranked universities. The country has been making a steady progress in the education sector with “improvements in research productivity, reflecting sustained high levels of public and private investment”.  Peking University and Tsinghua University are in the list.

Japan has 17 high ranked universities with Kyoto University and Tokyo University leading in the score. The country although second in terms of ranked universities in Asia has seen a downfall in the global rankings. Critics owe it to the poor allocation of funds for education and blame the government for not increasing the spending on education.

South Korea is known for its innovation and tech driven education. The country has 11 high ranked universities. Seoul National University is among the top in the list.

India has 4 universities which are ranked high globally. University of Delhi has made it to the cut while Jawaharlal Nehru University has lost the spot in the list. The regulatory system is the country has been termed as stifling since the government spending on education has been dismal over many years.

Singapore has two universities in the list of high ranked universities. National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University are on the list. Malaysia, Thailand and Pakistan have one university each that figures in the list.

The Asian countries with no high ranked universities are Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Brunei, Philippines, Indonesia and Mongolia.

Nations inch towards climate deal at marathon UN summit

Nations inch towards climate deal at marathon UN summit

ASEAN+ December 16, 2018 01:00

Katowice, Poland

Nations on Saturday inched towards a deal to implement the Paris climate goals, after all-night negotiations to hammer out a plan to limit global temperature rises exposed a range of conflicts.

A senior negotiator told AFP at the COP24 summit in Poland that delegates from nearly 200 nations had reached a “landing zone” of agreement.

But sources close to the talks said differences remained stark on the issues of ambition, how the climate fight is funded and how best to measure and ensure the fairness of each nation’s efforts to reduce emissions.

Delegates at the UN summit, held this year in the Polish mining city of Katowice, must agree on a common rule book to put the pledges nations made in the landmark 2015 Paris climate accord into practice.

This means all countries, rich and poor alike, must agree to action that will cap global temperature rises to “well below” two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and stave off the worst effects of planetary warming, and to a safer cap of 1.5C if possible.

The final draft decision text has been repeatedly delayed as negotiators seek to form guidelines that are effective in slashing emissions while protecting the economies of rich and poor nations alike.

“I think we have a landing zone. It is a compromise,” Gebru Jember Endalew, chair of the Least Developed Countries negotiating group, told AFP.

“It is a bit difficult to compromise when there are 190-plus countries.”

At the heart of the matter is how each nation funds action to mitigate and adapt to climate change, as well as how those actions are reported.

Developing nations want more clarity from richer ones over how the future climate fight will be funded and have been pushing for so-called “loss and damage” measures.

This would see richer countries giving money now to help deal with the effects of climate change many vulnerable states are already experiencing.

Brazilian villain?

Another contentious issue concerns the integrity of carbon markets, looking ahead to the day when the patchwork of distinct exchanges — in China, the Europe Union, parts of the United States — may be joined up in a global system.

“To tap that potential, you have to get the rules right,” said Alex Hanafi, lead counsel for the Environmental Defense Fund in the United States. “One of those key rules — which is the bedrock of carbon markets — is no double counting of emissions reductions.”

The Paris Agreement calls for setting up a mechanism to guard against practices that could undermine such a market, but finding a solution has proved so problematic that the debate may get kicked down the road to next year.

Some observers cast Brazil as the villain, with several sources accusing it of seeking to muddy the date by which the provisions should enter into force.

“There are still a range of possible outcomes and Brazil continues to work constructively with other parties to find a workable pathway forward,” Brazil’s chief negotiator J. Antonio Marcondes told AFP.

‘A deal within reach’

Another stumbling block could be how ambitious countries are in their renewed pledges ahead of a 2020 stock-take of the Paris deal’s progress.

Most nations wanted the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to form a key part of future planning. It highlighted the need for greenhouse gas emissions to be slashed to nearly half by 2030 in order to hit the 1.5C target.

But the US, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Kuwait objected, leading to watered down wording.

The European Union’s climate commissioner Miguel Arias Canete on Saturday morning tweeted a photo of himself poring over the draft decision text from the talks — which were meant to wrap up Friday — submitted by host Poland.

“A deal to make the #ParisAgreement operational is within reach,” he said.
