Veteran choreographer Jitti Chompee finds both inspiration and support from the Netherlands for his latest dance experiment

The number of contemporary dance companies in this country can still be counted on one hand and they also have plenty in common, not least the desire to explore the relationship between modernity and tradition at the heart of contemporary Thailand.

It’s a theme loved by audiences and producers both here and overseas, which makes it hard to understand why Thailand’s Culture Ministry seems determined to focus solely on the preservation of tradition.

Jitti Chompee and his 18 Monkeys Dance Theatre have not strayed from this theme and his latest work “Red Peter” is a highlight of this weekend’s performing arts calendar.

“Leo Spreksel, director of the Korzo Theatre in The Hague, approached me with the idea of a residency programme after he saw photographs of my ‘Demon in Venice’, which was staged inside an empty swimming pool,” says Jitti.

“During my visit to the Netherlands, I was inspired by visual arts that depict striking images, including De Bruyckere’s sculptures. I was especially intrigued by the abstractness of human bodies in his sculptures, which still resemble natural human positions. From these, I’ve designed shapes and positions of the dancers’ bodies, both individually and with one another. Cubism also stimulated me to experiment with creating distorted images, including headless bodies. Besides, Spreksel is interested in my incorporation of traditional Thai elements with contemporary choreography, and has given me freedom to further experiment with this.”

If the title sounds familiar and not unlike Jitti’s recent works, it’s because he was also inspired by Kafka’s |“A Report to the Academy”.

“This is a short story about an|ape who learned |to behave like a human. I see clear links between this character and the monkey character type in khon (traditional masked dance), so I decided to work with a dancer trained in the monkey role. I don’t want to show off any khon techniques, though. I don’t have any formula that dictates the percentage of khon or Western contemporary dance that needs to be there. I’m more intrigued by how the dancer can present the human-monkey image without his khon mask, purely through physical transformation.”

Jitti worked closely with his two dancers in The Hague residency, Benjamin Tardif and Carlo Camagni, in developing the new work.

“Inspired by De Bruyckere’s sculpture, Benjamin and Carlo experimented with moving in synchronisation while being attached at different body parts. As they were exploring different ways to move, I would observe the body placements that worked between their height and shape differences, and then pick moments that I found striking.

“It was a very successful creation and [world renowned choreographer] Jiri Kylian was so pleased that he decided to support me through his foundation to further develop choreography and share my ideas with the European dance community. Most dancers and choreographers very much liked the presentation, especially how we used the space, creating sound from the water trap, and dancing on earth and grass with simple lighting. They also appreciated how we developed the Thai traditional dance in such a way that it looked pure and was never cliched.

“It is also a great honour, one which I’d never imagined possible for me and my company, to have this immense support from such an internationally revered choreographer.”

Back home in Bangkok, Jitti has more dancers of whom he says, “Anucha Sumaman and Benjamin have been trained in classical Thai dance and so I’ve been able to push them even further to get a better awareness of their bodies and the space. The other dancers, Nicharee Khawsam-ang and Krittin Kiatmetha, have worked with the company so they understand the style and the recurring themes.

“And since I’m here, I’m also inspired by the environment and it influences the way I use the space. The stage, covered with powered coconut shell, is like an organic installation that reflects nature.”

Major retrospective on surrealist drawing big crowds

Japan’s largest-ever retrospective on the Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali opened at the National Art Centre in Tokyo on Wednesday following a two-month stay at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, where it drew 200,000 visitors.

Visitors to the museum in Tokyo’s Roppongi district can see about 250 works borrowed from the Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation and Reina Sofia National Art Centre in Spain, the Dali in the United States and museums in Japan.

“The Dali Foundation has brought his art to Japan three times before – in 1999, 2006 and 2007 – but this is the first time that such a big retrospective has been held there, comprising works from the three biggest collections in the world,” the foundation website Salvador-Dali.org notes.

The art covers his entire career, from youth to his last paintings in 1983. The 250 pieces include 57 from the three foreign collections and 14 from eight Japanese museums. |As well as paintings there are drawings, other graphic works and |documents – books, leaflets |and photographs from the foundation’s archives and Japanese libraries.

The exhibition illustrates how Dali – who died in 1989 – also engaged in other creative fields, such as cinema, theatre and dance. He wrote scripts for films and also collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock on the movie “Spellbound” and Walt Disney on the animated short “Destino”.

The last segment of the show|covers the 1960s to ’80s. In his later years Dali chiefly focused on large canvases and was conceiving fresh interpretations of classical works by the likes of Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael and Velazquez. In the 1970s he established his own museum in Figueres, the Spanish town where he was born, which the foundation now runs.

The exhibition, sponsored by the Yomiuri Shimbun among others, continues through December 12.

Japan’s largest retrospective on Salvador Dali opened at the National Art Center, Tokyo, on Wednesday, after a two-month stint at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art.

Visitors to the museum in the Roppongi district of Tokyo can view about 250 works by surrealist master Dali (1904-1989). The works come from the Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation and the Reina Sofia National Art Centre in Spain, the Salvador Dali Museum in the United States and museums in Japan.

An exhibition of vintage movie cameras goes on show at a Bangkok Cinema

BEST KNOWN for collecting and restoring and old movies, the Thai Film Archive also plays another significant role in preserving the history of the Thai film industry by searching for and rehabilitating the equipment that made these films possible – props and cameras,

From the single lens camera developed by Louis Le Prince in 1888 through the 35mm models developed by Arri, Moviecam and Panavision, cameras have constantly evolved and today the movie camera, as we knew it, is dead, replaced by computers and digital technology.

Now five of the cameras used in the past are on show at Paragon Cineplex in “The Magnificent Five”, an exhibition that offers a fascinating trip back in time.

The archive director Dome Sukvongse emphasises that all five cameras have played a major role in the Thai movie history.

“We hope that people interested in the process of invention will visit this exhibition,” he says.

The oldest in the show is the Pathe Studio motion picture camera, built in 1903 by Charles Morand Pathe, one of the pioneers of the French Film industry. The wooden body is covered with leather made of Moroccan pigskin and was the very first motion picture camera to gain popularity. A hand-cranked 35mm contraption, it was the most used movie camera in the world before World War I. Prince Sanbassatra, the father of Thai cinema, used the Pathe as did the Wasuwat brothers.

The camera on show is not unfortunately the one that Prince Sanbassatra used but was purchased online by the film archive..

“Many historical cameras became obsolete and lost. Fortunately, there is an online market that we constantly monitor and buy the items we consider will benefit our narrative

of Thailand’s film history,” says Dome.

Four of the five cameras on show – all bought online –still work. They include the American-built Bell & Howell 2709, which Henry MacRae used to film the 1923 movie “Nangsao Suvan” (“Suvarna of Siam”). Although produced and directed by American filmmakers, the film was one of the very first to feature Thai actors. The same camera model was owned by the Wasuwat brothers and used in the Srikrung Sound Films production studio.

Also on show in the Debrie Parvo which was built in 1908. Able to load 390 feet of 35mm, it was able to film continuously for almost six minutes. The Russian camera was used by the Royal State Railways Topical Film Service as well as by acclaimed cinematographer Patipak Pimlikit for 1927’s “Unexpected”.

The Mitchell Standard, which was developed in 1921 and is often called the Mickey Mouse ear magazine, holds from 400 feet to 1,000 feet of 35mm film. Gaining in popularity as silent films gave way to sound, the model was used for filming “The King of the White Elephant” in 1941 and also the recently restored “Santi-Vina” in 1954.

The latest in the collection is the Arriflex and was the most popular among Thai filmmakers after the 16mm era. The one on show in the exhibition belonged to the late director Vichit Kounavudhi and he used it to shoot most of his acclaimed movies including “Look Isaan” (“Son of the Northeast”) and “Ruan Pae”.

Cinematographer Porniti Virayasiri who worked with Vichit on “Look Isaan”, says that the Arriflex was the most widely used by Thai cameramen.

“The picture showing in the viewfinder is exactly what appears on film. It also has a zoom lens while the other types had only single lenses,” he says

Fellow cinematographer Panya Nimcharoenpong who worked with Piak Poster on many of his films including “Wai Onlawon” and “Kaew” as well as with Euthana Mukdasanit on “Pheesua Lae Dokmai” (“Butterflies and Flowers”), agrees, adding that that the Arriflex was the most convenient camera on the market at that time.

More cameras are on show alongside props and other related items at the Thai Film Museum in Salaya, Nakhon Pathom.

“The Magnificent Five” continues through Sunday at Paragon Cineplex on the fifth floor of Siam Paragon.

Absent a year, the Thai-American designer roars back at New York Fashion Week

THAI-AMERICAN designer Thakoon Panichgul stormed back into New York Fashion Week after a season off to embrace “see-now, buy-now”, offering a autumn-winter collection available to purchase instantly.

He’s in the rich soup of designers on the catwalk in the Big Apple for the shows ending today, others including Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria Beckham, Tory Burch and Phillip Lim.

Eschewing the official spring-summer 2017 season, Thakoon’s self-titled label instead offered high-end customers clothes for this autumn and winter and, with cooler temperatures around the corner, he’s confident it will pay off.

Guests including Wendi Deng Murdoch were invited to decamp from Manhattan to Brooklyn, where they were treated to a stunning setting at Dumbo offering gorgeous views of the Brooklyn Bridge.

“If I wanted to I could dream and show feathers all the time, but that’s not what the customer wants,” said the Thailand-born, US-raised designer, who’s beloved by New York’s smart women.

“What the customer wants is comfortable cool clothes they can wear, layer and add on to.”

His look for the season mixed feminine lace with chunky knits, all while embracing the prints for which he’s famous.

Taking the lead from Tom Ford last Wednesday and Tommy Hilfiger on Friday, he ditched the traditional calendar in which clothes typically go on sale months after the catwalk show. “Because I took last season off, it gave me a lot of energy to be able to focus this season,” he explained.

“What was refreshing was to really rethink the idea, rethink how we do business and we design in the context of digital. Digital is such an important part of what’s happening.”

TOMMY HILFIGER

Tommy Hilfiger sought to revolutionise fashion last Friday by throwing the most extravagant catwalk show of his life, launching his click-and-buy collection with a fairground party topped up with burgers and fries.

The American designer, who’s turned an eye for style into a multibillion-dollar global enterprise, has lavished millions on upending his production schedule and teaming up with the supermodel of the moment, Gigi Hadid, to create an autumn-winter collection in her image.

It’s a huge gamble that the 65-year-old Hilfiger hopes will pay off in sales. He envisions that high sales will cement the revolution and other designers will follow in his footsteps. “People want things now,” he said.

Most of what’s available now online won’t hit the stores for months. The digital revolution means catwalk shows are now broadcast live and the social media zap pictures of clothes around the world in seconds.

Hilfiger’s outfits personified Hadid’s casual, sporty Californian style – flattering for the figures of coltish 20-somethings. There were hoodies, tracksuits, basketball-jersey-style dresses, silk boxing shorts, high-waist bellbottom trousers and cropped leather jackets with a giant anchor and “Hadid” scrawled on the back.

“Designers usually use models to model – they never use models to design. I tapped into Gigi’s style and we’ve been working together,” he said.

Time will tell if his customers love Hadid as much as he does. He’ll certainly be hoping that a lot of her 22.5 million Instagram followers will get their credit cards out.

VICTORIA BECKHAM

Introducing velvet for next spring and summer, the former Spice Girl had her football-legend husband David and their eldest son Brooklyn in the front row of her show on Sunday.

Hers was a daring and experimental collection that showcased her evolving maturity as a designer. “I really think I’ve come into my own this season,” she said.

“It’s a lot about fabric development.”

Bra tops were layered under knitwear and she made liberal use of velvet in what she called a “fresh, interesting take” on warmer-weather dressing.

“Velvet is normally something that’s quite heavy, quite wintery, but this is really light and buttery and feels beautiful on the skin and great to wear in the summer.”

TORY BURCH

Tory Burch presented a colourful, wearable collection for her global, affordable luxury brand – a witty interpretation of East Coast hostess chic and the free-spirit beach towns of the West.

She summed it up as “quintessential American style”.

Burch, who created a fitness tracker with Fitbit, is keen to see more marriages of fashion and technology and has just appointed a “chief technology officer”. She also signalled that the brand is likely to shift more towards see-now, buy-now. “It’s a pretty Herculean shift, so I want to take it slowly. Our collections are pretty season-less anyway.”

PHILLIP LIM

Phillip Lim delved into nostalgia in reaction to what was “happening today”, he said, by researching Victorian bathing suits and seeking inspiration in the Nashville music scene of the 1950-60s.

“To me it’s how do you maintain a certain type of dignity,” he said, “but also remind people that the basic essentials are love and human emotions and being grateful and having dignity and respect.”

A US artist is seeking to bring attention to the deterioration of Israel’s Dead Sea through a new exhibit featuring nude art, spokesman Nadav Galon said on Tuesday.

Spencer Tunick said Monday that he had repeated a 2011 nude staging at the famously salty sea to show how sinkholes are ravaging the area and called on the Israeli government to take measures to protect it.

For the latest installation, Tunick had 15 naked men and women pose in sinkholes going up to their waists at the same location he had photographed five years ago to show how much the beach had changed.

Some 2,000 sinkholes have been identified on the sea’s western shores, and its shoreline is expected to drop nearly 20 metres by 2020, according to EcoPeace Middle East, a joint environmental group.

“I care deeply about the future of the Dead Sea and hope that my presence and involvement here can propel the Israeli government and local activists to take real measurable action to save the Dead Sea,” said Tunick, according to a press release on Monday.

His new exhibit, which includes the nude art from 2011, is scheduled to open Tuesday in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv. Pictures from Tunick’s latest installation is still to be processed and will not be part of the two-week exhibition, according to Tunick’s spokesman.

Tunick made headlines in July for staging a protest with 100 naked women against US presidential candidate Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, according to the release.

Lao Fashion Week 2016 kicked off on Monday with the launch of a popup store displaying fashion pieces from participating designers to support the Lao Young Designer project.

A red carpet fashion show featuring local models promoting the latest trends and pieces from local and foreign designers created a colourful start to Lao Fashion Week on Monday.

Designers also displayed their collections in booths on the ground floor of the Vientiane Center following the official launch of a popup store in support of the Lao Young Designer project.

Founder of Lao Fashion Week Pany Saignavongs said the popup store would be on display until Friday, with 20 per cent of sales proceeds going to support the project.

Men Folder brand owner Bandid Lassavong said he was supplying 35 pieces – 32 for men and 3 for women – and would provide one outfit on the final day to be auctioned in support of the project.

Meanwhile, Asian Development with Disabled Persons representative Yuki Nakamura said her organisation had brought in well-known Japanese hair stylist Suguru Ito, florist Norie and kimono designer Takako to add to the vibrant atmosphere of this year’s event.

Takako has some 40 years’ experience, and this year’s Lao Fashion Week is the first time she has brought her kimonos to Laos.

This year’s event also features an art exhibition to support young designers.

An official reception party was also held at the French ambassador’s residence on Monday evening to welcome designers and officials.

At the reception, French Ambassador to Laos Claudine Ledoux noted that Lao Young Designer 2015 winner ‘Billy’ Siamphan Chanthavichith had undertaken an intensive six month fashion design course at École supérieure des arts et techniques de la mode (also known as Esmod) in Paris, France, and that he was showcasing his collection after graduating. She expected this year’s winner Viseth Sithilath would also be successful.

She also thanked the officials, especially Pany Saignavongs, the models, designers and sponsors for supporting Lao Fashion Week.

Oxford English Dictionary adds more Singlish words

Aiyoh, atas, char kway teow: Singlish words enter Oxford Dictionary

More Singapore English words used colloquially here have been added to the lexicon of the venerable Oxford English Dictionary (OED), following its latest quarterly update this month.

Top on the list of new words: aiyah and aiyoh, which are often used to express impatience or dismay, and ah beng, a stereotype applied to Chinese men.

Atas, an oft-used term by Singaporeans to deride people for being too arrogant or high-class, was also included in the list.

The ubiquitous coffee shop, or kopitiam, also made it to the big time, alongside dishes popular in Singapore and Southeast Asia. They were char kway teow, chicken rice and rendang.

In its last update in March, the OED created a buzz by adding a varied list of nearly 20 Singapore English words.

They included blur, ang moh, shiok and sabo, as well as food items like teh tarik and char siu.

The September update, which paid a tribute to the late British author Roald Dahl, also featured new and revised entries used in his books for children.

Several Singlish words had previously made it to the dictionary’s online version, which was launched in March 2000, including lah, sinseh and kiasu.

BCT adopts a new approach for two comedy productions this month

Bangkok Community Theatre (BCT), the oldest and largest English-speaking theatre group, was originally known for producing plays whose authors are dead. But now that the number of English-speaking theatre groups in this country has risen significantly, reflecting also the expanding expatriate community, the group’s two contemporary plays at a regular theatre venue, not a hotel ballroom, this month are worth our attention.

Opening last Thursday and continuing this weekend is John Cariani’s romantic comedy “Almost, Maine”.

“I was given the script last year by one of the Bangkok Community Theatre board members when I was looking for a new modern play to develop my directing skills,” director Peevara “PV” Kitchumnongpan says,

“I fell in love with the play after reading it the first time. John Cariani’s writing is incredibly charming and heartfelt so it comes as no surprise that ‘Almost, Maine’ is one of the most widely produced plays in the US.”

PV, a trained actor who was last seen in “Stick Figures” and “Mom: The Musical”, adds: “The play comprises nine short stories about love, with each story exploring different relationships and concepts of love with ‘almost’ no cultural barrier. I’m sure ‘Almost, Maine’ will touch the hearts of the audience in Bangkok, both Thais and foreigners alike. I’m also trying to bring a youthful energy to the English-speaking theatre scene in Bangkok. BCT has not done a straight modern play for a few years now and I’m determined to bring that trend back with this heart-warming and romantic play that is accessible to all ages.”

PV has selected a venue much smaller than those usually used for BCT events. “Because there are only a few characters on stage at any given time, I believe that with Blue Box Studio we can really zoom in on their interactions and experience the warm human connections together with the audience in a smaller space. My vision for ‘Almost, Maine’ is truthful, simple and honest, so I’m very happy to be working in such a great space.”

Next week, another BCT production will settle into the same studio, Yasmina Reza’s “Art”, the Thai version of which was at M Theatre and Kad Theatre in Chiang Mai 16 years ago.

Seasoned American director Michael Allman tells XP: “I read this play when it first became popular, around the year 2000 or so. I was working at La Crosse Community Theatre in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and we’re always looking for the latest new plays. At first I didn’t really like it. For some reason it felt to me like a bad translation, very literal, like the kind they make of French or German plays, just so students can read the plays in English before attempting to read them in the original language.

“Then it was performed in La Crosse by another group and I saw how wrong I was. It’s a good lesson in re-thinking your opinions. Since then, I’ve really grown to love the play and to understand how good the writing really is. And actually living with the play through the rehearsal process has only deepened my appreciation. I’ve also learned a lot working with this marvellous cast.

“I decided to do it here in Bangkok, just because I love the play and I consider Bangkok my home now. I feel you should bloom where you’re planted.

“I understand the play has been performed in Thai and that’s a bit daunting, because I really do respect Thai actors. They really commit to their roles in a way that many western actor are a bit hesitant to do.”

As for the Blue Box Studio, Allman says, “For ‘Art’ it’s perfect. The play is all about the interaction of the three characters and in this space you can see every gesture, glance and expression. We’ve worked a lot on what I call the ’emotional geography’ of the play and it’s wonderful to know that the audience will be able to follow us on every step of that journey.”

He also shares his tricks for staging comedy, “You have to be true to the script and play the emotional truth of the characters – certainly that’s true in this play. The other thing that’s important is clarity. Drama can be moody and atmospheric, but comedy must be crystal clear.”

A new London exhibition celebrates the rebellious sixties

Counterculture and hippy life are served up in a visual and musical blend at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, where a new exhibition delves into the swinging sixties.

“With this exhibition we explore the era-defining significance and impact of the late 1960s upon life today,” says Victoria Broackes, curator of the exhibition “You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966-1970,” which opened on Saturday.

“The years from 1966 to 1970 – just 1,826 days – undeniably shaped the world we’re living in today, from global civil rights, environmentalism, consumerism, to neo-liberalist politics,” she adds.

Sporting a headset picked up at the exhibition entrance, each visitor embarks on a journey through the destinations which defined the era. They include San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood – the epicentre of the hippie movement – London’s Carnaby Street, and Woodstock Festival in upstate New York.

One room is entirely dedicated to Woodstock, complete with fake grass and screens showing concerts to recreate the hippie festival vibe.

The exhibition also turns its attention to more serious subjects – opposition to the Vietnam War and the US civil rights movement.

A soundtrack featuring The Who’s “My Generation” and “Imagine” by John Lennon ensure full immersion in the exhibition – away from modern distractions.

“In a world before mobile phones and social media, for young people, music in the 60s – which reflected the huge upheavals that were going on – was one of the ways you could communicate and that helped create a community,” says Geoffrey Marsh, another of the exhibition’s curators.

But the overall experience is undoubtedly visual, with 350 objects including photos, posters, magazines and LPs, with lines from “protest songs” along the museum walls.

Suits worn by John Lennon and George Harrison, a costume made for Mick Jagger, and shards from a guitar shattered onstage by Jimi Hendrix, all help fuel the rebellious atmosphere.

The ticketed exhibition closes on February 26, 2017.
