A Malaysian couple who travelled to Bangkok to look for their missing son was heartbroken upon finding out their son passed away on May 11 at Mae Sot Hospital near the Thailand-Myanmar border.

Malaysian parents heartbroken over son's death in Thailand linked to job scam

Goi Chee Kong, 50, and his wife, 45, from Ipoh, Perak, were devasted when they found out Zhan Feng, 23, had fallen victim to a job scam.

He was believed to have been trafficked into Myawaddy in south-eastern Myanmar and forced to work for the syndicate.

The couple travelled to Bangkok on August 30 and were scheduled to fly to Mae Sot the following day to meet their son.

“We were told my son was ill and was receiving treatment at the hospital. Therefore, my wife and I travelled to Bangkok, hoping to bring him back to Malaysia for treatment.

“However, we were informed he had died at 2am on May 11. The doctor believed my son was abused before he was left at the hospital for treatment on April 11,”.

Chee Kong said his son was admitted to the hospital’s ICU unit under a fake name and passport number.

Due to his son’s fake identity, he said the hospital could not reach the embassy and family to discuss his health condition and treatment.

“Without further medical treatment, he passed away a month later. His remain was buried at a cemetery in Si Racha in Chonburi province,” he said.

To bring closure to the family, Chee Kong said he and his wife hope to bring their son’s ashes home as soon as possible.

However, he was informed by a non-governmental organisation that arranged his son’s burial services in May to settle the outstanding hospital bills of about RM40,000 before the family could obtain a death certificate to exhume the body for DNA testing and cremation.

With the assistance of Teruntum assemblyman Sim Chon Siang who is in Bangkok, a fundraising campaign was launched on Friday.

In about 22 hours, the family had collected RM50,000 from generous members of the public.

Accompanying the family to Mae Sot, Sim said the family would settle the hospital bills on Monday (Sept 5) and obtain the death certificate and permission to exhume the body at the burial site at Si Racha in Chonburi (about120 km southeast of Bangkok) as soon as possible.

“We hope to bring the ashes back to Malaysia on Thursday. We hope everything goes smoothly,” Sim said.

Zhan Feng, a final year student of the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), travelled to Bangkok for a holiday on January 19 to meet a friend he had met on social media.

Zhan Feng promised to return home to celebrate his mother’s birthday on Feb 5. However, he did not show up. Two days later, his father lodged a missing person report.

On March 31, Zhan Feng called the parent and informed them that he was in Mae Sot in Tak Province and he needed RM80,000 for medical treatment.

“During the conversation, we noticed something unusual. We believed he was monitored and threatened. He was unusually quiet. He also apologised for not being able to return home. He promised will return home a year later… We have not heard from him since then,” Chee Kong said.

After the telephone conversation, he believed his son was a job scam victim, and lodged a police report on April 2.

He advised job seekers to not fall victim to lucrative oversea job offers.

“We accepted my son’s death. I hope his death teaches all young job seekers a lesson. I hope his death will be the last,” he said.

Vacant Japan homes enjoying new lease on life

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

In recent years, an increasing number of vacant houses have been sitting unoccupied — even in good locations in urban areas. Now, however, owners are taking advantage of leasing services that renovate such homes and sublease them as residences or shops.

Vacant Japan homes enjoying new lease on life

The businesses turn a profit by rehabilitating properties and transforming them into income-producing assets on behalf of the owners, who often lack the relevant expertise to utilize their properties effectively.

The central and local governments are currently strengthening measures on vacant houses due to possible problems following a natural disaster, and hope the growth of such services will help reduce the number of empty homes.

Empty for 7 years
A popular ice cream store in Nishinari Ward, Osaka, set up shop in an empty property. Although the building was in a convenient location near Tengachaya Station on the Nankai Electric Railway line, it had sat unoccupied for seven years.

The shop opens late, at 8 p.m., but the neon-lit building, which is over 50 years old, is known for its Instagram-friendly appearance. Originally, the building leaked and had an uneven floor, but it was given a new lease on life last autumn by a vacant house utilization service operated by Tokyo-based real estate company Ject One.

The service, dubbed “Akisapo” is structured so Ject One or a partner company can lease, renovate and sublease vacant properties. The service, which began in 2016, has already been used to revamp about 50 properties nationwide. Old houses and other properties in Tondabayashi and Kishiwada in Osaka Prefecture are among Ject One’s ongoing projects.

Owners bear no financial burden. On the contrary, Ject One pays a portion of the rent upon a house lease. The company uses the rental income to cover renovation costs and takes a slice of the rent as profit. After all the company’s renovation costs are recovered, the owner is free to rent the property out and receive 100% of the income.

The ice cream store was opened by an Osaka City-based yakiniku barbecue restaurant operator. Rent was set at an affordable ¥70,000 per month, motivating the restaurant to try running a different type of business, according to the store.

The building’s owner, an Osaka City resident in her 60s, said the building was previously used by her father as an office. “My father passed away and I had no choice but to leave it empty,” the woman said. “I’m glad to see it put to good use.

Transportation firm involvement
Osaka Metro Co. became involved in the housing market in December 2019. The company rents vacant buildings around three subway stations on the Midosuji Line — Nishitanabe, Nagai and Abiko — and subleases them following renovation work. The company has completed work on five such houses so far, with plans to increase this number to around 100.

“We want to create a lively atmosphere along our subway line and increase user numbers,” an Osaka Metro official said.

In the past, getting information on vacant houses was difficult, leading to a belief that such premises would be unlikely to make a profit. Nevertheless, the central and local governments have begun to act on the empty home issue, fearing the buildings could collapse or catch fire if left unattended. This has encouraged the spread of private companies and other services.

Good location vital
According to government statistics, as of 2018, there were 8.48 million vacant houses nationwide, with the figure more than doubling in the past 30 years. In 2015, the government enforced the law on special measures against vacant houses and has also opened “empty house banks,” which facilitate online searches for vacant house information. Currently, some 5,600 houses in about 640 municipalities are registered.

The Kobe city government has recently begun a project to subsidize up to ¥5 million for renovation work on empty homes in cases where architects are involved. Twenty houses will be revitalized as shared living quarters, artist activity centres and other facilities to improve the community’s appeal.

However, observers say it is difficult to profit from vacant houses unless they are well located. Currently, there are only limited examples of homes that have benefited from the renovation service.

A Bentley Mulsanne reported stolen in London has been found in Pakistan during a customs raid on a house reserved for military officials.

Bentley stolen from London recovered from military house in Pakistan

Foreign sleuths tracked down the luxury car’s location to a Defence Housing Authority (DHA) residence in Karachi and informed Pakistani customs, it emerged on Saturday.

Customs officials recovered the Bentley – worth an estimated 6.8 million baht or US$185,500 – and arrested two suspects, Jameel Shafi and Naveed Bilawani, at the address. Also detained were an alleged facilitator at the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department and other suspects.

The raid came after Pakistan’s intelligence agency received information from an unnamed foreign counterpart that a Bentley had been stolen from London and was likely parked at a house (15-B, South, 10th Street) in DHA, Karachi.

Customs officials carried out surveillance before launching the raid. Officials asked the Bentley’s “owner”, Jameel Shafi, to produce documents for the vehicle. Instead, he told them it had been sold to him by Naveed Bilwani, who had agreed to take care of the documentation.

According to the police report, Bilwani then showed up at the scene and was asked to produce his ownership documents for the Bentley but was unable to do so

Bilwani then informed customs officials that he had only helped broker the deal between Shafi and a third party named Naveed Yamin, who had received payment for the car from Bilwani.

After a check showed the Bentley had been illegally registered with the excise and taxation department, both suspects were detained.

The customs department has also charged Yamin and an unnamed excise official.

Malaysia’s former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad was discharged from hospital on Sunday after being admitted for Covid-19, his office said in a statement.

Malaysia's ex-PM Mahathir discharged from hospital after Covid-19 treatment

The 97-year-old, who served for more than two decades as premier and is still an active lawmaker, has a history of heart troubles. He has had heart attacks and bypass operations.

Dr Mahathir, admitted to the National Heart Institute on Wednesday after testing positive for the coronavirus, will remain quarantined at home until Tuesday, the statement said.

He has received at least three doses of Covid-19 vaccine, the last known shot in November 2021, according to earlier comments from him and government officials.

The nonagenarian, a trained physician, underwent an elective medical procedure in January and was readmitted to the hospital later that month for treatment. The National Heart Institute did not say at the time what procedure he had undergone.

After serving as prime minister for 22 years until 2003, Dr Mahathir returned as premier at the age of 92 in 2018 after leading the opposition coalition to a historic win, defeating the party that he had once led. His government collapsed in less than two years due to infighting.

Chinese couples tend to wait before tying the knot

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/international/ann/40019718

While fewer Chinese couples are willing to tie the knot these days, many of those who do choose to walk down the aisle at a later stage in their lives, according to recently released data.

Chinese couples tend to wait before tying the knot

Last year, 7.64 million marriages were registered in China, a 6.1 percent year-on-year decrease, according to a Ministry of Civil Affairs report.

What’s more, it’s the record low for the 36 years since the ministry started releasing the report in 1986.

The number of marriage registrations has been declining for eight consecutive years. And 48.2 percent of those who registered to become newlyweds last year were older than 30, setting a record, according to the report.

Guo Xiamei, an associate professor at Xiamen University who specializes in family studies, said: “The COVID-19 epidemic may be a cause of the decline in the desire to marry because it has reduced the chances of meeting potential partners. The economic difficulties that resulted from the epidemic, may also have contributed to the decline.

“The ‘cooling off ‘ period before divorce is another factor in the decline because people are attempting to avoid that risk.

“Statistics show that more people of the younger generation prefer not to get married because lots of young people are more aware that a marriage certificate cannot keep the love fresh,” she said.

“To some extent, they see the essence of marriage as actually being a system of allocating property.

“The structure of marriage and family is to build a system to keep society stable, but more and more people think the other way. Marriage, in many people’s minds, becomes a risky decision,” Guo added.

“The decline in the marriage rate also corresponds with the improvement in education, especially with regard to women. Many developed countries have also faced a declining marriage rate as people received more education. When people get more education, the marriage rate is likely to drop,” she said.

The experiences of a 34-year-old Beijing resident surnamed Zhou are in line with the official data and the expert’s analysis.

Zhou, who declined to provide her full name, had a stable relationship with her boyfriend and they had a wedding ceremony in 2017. However, it is necessary in China to obtain an official marriage certificate for the union of two people to be legally binding, and Zhou and her boyfriend had not done that.

They lived together, however, and family and friends all saw them as a couple.

“But most of them did not know that we were not a ‘legal’ couple until last year,” she said.

“Back then, I was trying to trade in my old apartment and bought a new one. But the market was not good, so I waited for a good price to sell my old apartment. It took two years. If I bought an apartment after getting married, it would become a shared property with my spouse, which is unfair because my parents paid the majority of the down payment,” she said.

Zhou also said that the process of applying for a loan is more complicated for a married couple.

After she bought the new apartment in 2019, both Zhou and her partner thought the marriage certificate “is not a big deal”.

“Our relationship was even better than most of our married friends’ relationships,” she said.

Last year, Zhou registered for marriage “only because I was pregnant”.

Guo, from Xiamen University, said: “It is important to make the procedure easier for unmarried people to have children in order to encourage births.”

Last year, the number of newborns in China fell to 10.62 million, compared with 12 million in 2020.

According to the National Health Commission, China’s population growth is set to turn negative, with more deaths than births, by 2025 as the rate has slowed down in the past few years.

Typhoon Hinnamnor, the most powerful tropical storm so far this year, has brought heavy rainfall across Korea over the weekend, and is expected to hit the Korean Peninsula later this week.

Typhoon Hinnamnor to slam Korean Peninsula later this week

Typhoon Hinnamnor is expected to be one of the strongest tropical storms ever to hit the country, joined by strong winds and heavy rain.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the typhoon was forecast to arrive 460 kilometres southwest of Jeju Island at Monday 9 a.m. with an atmospheric pressure of 920 hectopascals at its centre and a maximum wind speed of 54 meters per second, being a top “super strong” typhoon in a four-tier system.

The typhoon is expected to weaken as it approaches the peninsula, expected to drop to the second strongest level when arriving at the waters 180 kilometres southwest of Jeju Island. However, it is expected to develop into a stronger typhoon landing 20 kilometers northwest of Busan at Tuesday 9 a.m. with an atmospheric pressure of 950 hectopascals at its center and a maximum wind speed of 43 meters.

It is expected to be as strong as Typhoon Maemi in 2003, which struck the country in 2003. The typhoon disaster left 117 deaths, 13 missing and poverty damage worth over 4 trillion won ($2.9 billion).

Typhoon Hinnamnor has been travelling northward at a speed of 18 kilometres per hour over the waters northeast of Taipei, Taiwan as of Sunday. It sped up significantly from its previous speed at 11 kilometres per hour recorded the day before.

As a result of the approaching typhoon, most parts of Korea received heavy rain on Sunday, with Jeju Island seeing up to 273.5 millimetres of rain on Hallasan.

The country is expected to receive between 100 and 300 millimetres of rain between Sunday and Tuesday, with the mountainous areas of Jeju receiving more than 600 millimetres of rain.

Bracing for the typhoon, preliminary weather advisories were issued in the southern parts of Korea, including the cities of Gwangju, Busan, Daegu and Ulsan. An advisory was issued for Jeju Island a day before.

President Yoon Suk-yeol held an emergency meeting Sunday at the presidential office in Yongsan in response to the approaching typhoon. Yoon ordered the Interior Minister to fully prepare for the typhoon, including the preemptive operation of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters the day before.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has called for schools to shut down or switch to online classes in preventing safety accidents regarding the typhoon until Tuesday.

The country is expected to be under the influence of the typhoon through Wednesday.

SINGAPORE – Singapore hotels’ average room rate (ARR) rose to a near-decade high in July, extending growth for the sixth straight month, as global visitors returned with the reopening of international borders.

Singapore hotels charge highest average room rate in 10 years as visitors return

ARR in July was $259 – the highest since September 2012 when it was $261.66, according to the latest data from the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

Year on year, ARR shot up 69.2 per cent from July last year, while it grew 7.7 per cent month on month.

Overall, hotel revenues reached $318.5 million for the month, more than 4½ times the level recorded in the corresponding period a year ago.

The increase in industrywide room revenue – which also rose month on month against $297 million in June – came as visitor arrivals surged to 726,601 in July, from 543,733 in the previous month.

Revenue per available room (RevPAR) rose to record a new post-Covid-19 high, hitting $204.99 in July, up 140.3 per cent from the previous year, and up 9.2 per cent from June.

Average occupancy rates increased to a multi-year high of 79 per cent, a hair above June’s 78 per cent and just 4 percentage points shy of the pre-pandemic rate of 83 per cent clocked in both December 2019 and January 2020.

Growth was also seen in July across all hotel categories, with ARRs of $126.44 in the economy segment, $206.80 in the mid-tier segment, $301.07 in the upscale segment and $538.27 in the luxury segment.

For the year to date, overall room revenue was $1.39 billion, higher than the amount earned for the whole of 2021.

For the first seven months of the year, ARR reached $220.93, up 47.2 per cent compared with the same period in 2021.

RevPAR was up 102.4 per cent for the period to $153.43, STB data showed.

The average occupancy rate rose 18.9 per cent from the same period last year to 69.5 per cent.

China gifts 150 vehicles to Cambodia for military archiving, ASEAN summit

China has donated a new fleet of 150 vehicles to Cambodia for use to transport dignitaries at the upcoming ASEAN and ASEAN Plus summit and to assist the Kingdom’s Ministry of National Defence with its military archive works.

China gifts 150 vehicles to Cambodia for military archiving, ASEAN summit

Defence minister General Tea Banh said the donation once again showed the “ironclad” bonds friendship between the two nations.

Tea Banh told reporters after the September 1 handover ceremony he co-presided over with Chinese ambassador Wang Wentian in Phnom Penh that Cambodia had requested China’s assistance because of difficulties that had arisen with a lack of appropriate vehicles for use at the recent ASEAN ministerial meetings, and to be well prepared for the November summits.

He said China’s helpful responses towards its smaller neighbours showed the sincerity of its heart, and that China had made a timely response after receiving the proposal, with the vehicles arriving in Cambodia well in advance of the summit.

Tea Banh noted that of the 150 vehicles, some will be used to transport senior delegates and some others will be delivered to the defence ministry’s Military History unit.

“We’ll use them to transport senior delegates who come to attend the summits, and as a means of carrying out this archiving work we’re doing.

“The archiving is important because some of the military’s works contributed significantly to [Prime Minister Hun Sen’s] win-win policy that eventually brought about comprehensive peace, as evidenced by Win-Win monuments we have built at historical sites,” he said.

“We have gone through a lot in history and we cannot just let it fade away. So we need to maintain historical records and evidence, especially at some historical sites concerning our sovereignty. We put this proposal to China because this [Military History] unit is newly established and there were no appropriate means for carrying out this work.

“So, we enlisted China and now we’ve received a fleet of 150 new vehicles in response,” he said while also expressing the gratitude of the Cambodian government and people for the assistance as the Kingdom gets ready to host world leaders from ASEAN and around the globe this November.

China gifts 150 vehicles to Cambodia for military archiving, ASEAN summit

China-Cambodia Friendship Radio (CCFR) quoted ambassador Wang as saying that China and Cambodia had built a community of common destiny.

Wang said the community is of such strategic importance that they would be strengthening and developing a series of comprehensive strategic relations, with the bonds of friendship between the two countries having reached the highest levels ever in their long historical record of ties.

He said the Chinese side has given its firm support to Cambodia to go about choosing its path of development on its own and building its military and national economy.

“We provide these donations as merely a practical course of action to help support Cambodia in hosting the ASEAN Summit and related meetings. China hopes that Cambodia will play a more active and important role in regional security affairs, because we have the goal of seriously implementing China-led initiatives, both global security and global development initiatives,” the statement broadcast on CCFR said.

CCFR added that Tang Hao, the chief of staff at the Chinese embassy in Phnom Penh, and Nim Sovath, director-general of the Cambodian defence ministry’s General Department of Policy and Foreign Affairs, co-signed the memorandum transferring ownership of the fleet of 150 vehicles.

First in-person IPEF talks to be held in LA next week

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/international/ann/40019678

WASHINGTON — Los Angeles is to host on Sept. 8 and 9. the first in-person meeting of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), a new U.S.-led trade pact comprising 14 nations including Japan, aimed at strengthening supply chains and promoting cooperation in economic security to counter China.

First in-person IPEF talks to be held in LA next week

The main topics in a draft statement seen by The Yomiuri Shimbun ahead of the ministerial-level meeting included supply chains, clean economies, trade and fair economies.

Representatives from all 14 IPEF countries are expected to attend the talks.

According to the draft statement, IPEF members plan to work together to quickly restore supply chains in the event of disruptions caused by a pandemic or conflict. The number of supply sources will be increased and accumulated logistics data will be utilized in preparation for such eventualities.

The document on clean economies is expected to include matters related to energy security.

To help countries decarbonize, technology will be provided to IPEF members lagging behind in the use of hydrogen and ammonia, which do not emit carbon dioxide, easing the shift away from fossil fuel reliance.

On trade, practices such as paperless and electronic customs procedures are expected to be promoted.

Regarding fair economies, IPEF members are expected to confirm the importance of efforts to prevent double corporate taxation and eliminate corruption in order to increase investment in the participating countries. The pact aims to forge values such as compliance with rules by following the example of countries with fewer violations.

Next week’s talks will be the first in-person IPEF meeting and Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura is expected to attend.

Partly due to concerns in the United States about the negative impact on industry and employment, the IPEF does not include the reduction or elimination of tariffs as items for negotiation.

Tough negotiations are ongoing among relevant ministers concerning the cross-border exchange of data, as there are still differences of opinion between Japan and the United States, and some of the participating countries.

Nishimura plans to meet with Indonesian ministers in the near future to discuss the issue.

The IPEF comprises 14 countries: Japan, the United States, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, the Philippines and Fiji.

The combined gross domestic product of the participating countries represents about 40% of world GDP.
