Indonesia’s Mt. Sinabung shoots column of smoke and ash into sky

Jakarta – An Indonesian volcano erupted Tuesday, sending a massive column of ash and smoke 2,000 metres (6,500 feet) into the air, coating local villages in debris.

Mount Sinabung on Sumatra island — which has been rumbling since 2010 and saw a deadly eruption in 2016 — spewed the thick plume after activity picked up recent days.

Disaster agency officials said the eruption has the “potential” to affect flights, but it had not issued a formal notice for planes to avoid the area.

Local residents living along rivers near the crater were advised to be on alert for possible lava flows.

There were no reports of injuries or deaths after the latest eruption and the disaster agency did not issue an evacuation order.

No one lives inside a previously announced no-go zone around the volcano.

Sinabung roared back to life in 2010 for the first time in 400 years. After another period of inactivity it erupted once more in 2013, and has remained highly active since.

In 2016, seven people died in one of Sinabung’s eruptions, while a 2014 eruption killed 16.

Last year, a volcano in the strait between Java and Sumatra islands erupted, causing an underwater landslide that unleashed a tsunami which killed over 400 people.

Indonesia is home to around 130 active volcanoes due to its position on the “Ring of Fire”, a belt of tectonic plate boundaries circling the Pacific Ocean where frequent seismic activity occurs.

US ‘sex slave’ guru goes on trial in New York

Breaking News May 07, 2019 16:35

By AFP

New York – The trial of an American “self-help” guru who for years presided over a secretive society of women sex slaves begins Tuesday in New York, where his former female supporters may be called to testify against him.

Six people had been due to appear in the dock, but 58-year-old Keith Raniere will now be the only one to stand trial.

The other five — all women who held management positions in various organisations headed by Raniere, including US actress Allison Mack — have pleaded guilty one by one and avoided going on trial.

“Vanguard”, as Raniere was also known, was the leader of Nxivm, a purported executive coaching organisation which according to prosecutors served to extort money from followers and enable him to exploit women sexually.

More than 16,000 people over two decades passed through Raniere’s self-help workshops, which promised to develop their “human potential”, charging $5,000 for a 5-day course.

Many who signed up quickly became indebted and ended up having to work for Nxivm (pronounced Nexium), the main organisation, to pay their fees.

    – Victims branded –

From the beginning Raniere is believed to have had a circle of 15 to 20 women under his influence, with whom he had sex at will.

As with many sects, everything rested on the powerful psychological influence of the guru, who used a mixture of pseudo-philosophical teachings, close oversight and humiliation to assert control.

A charismatic man with sleek long hair, beard and circular glasses, Raniere demanded that the women follow an extremely low-calorie diet.

Based in Albany, state capital of New York, the organisation had centres in several cities across the US, Canada, Mexico and other Central American countries.

In 2015 Raniere created a secretive pyramid organisation within the group known as DOS, which included “slaves” and “masters”. All members were women except for Raniere, at the top of the pyramid.

Among the duties of the “slaves” was to have sex with Raniere.

Before being accepted as “slaves” the women had to provide compromising photos, letters and other documents that the organisation could make public if they left DOS.

Some were branded with Raniere’s initials on their flesh using a cautery pen. The victims were held still by other women and filmed during the branding ceremonies.

After the defection of several members, and an article in the New York Times exposed his activities, Raniere fled to Mexico in October 2017. He was arrested the following March at a luxurious villa in the seaside resort of Puerto Vallarta.

– Lift the veil –

Raniere faces charges including sex trafficking and conspiracy. If convicted, he could face life in prison. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The female supporters’ cooperation with Brooklyn federal prosecutor Richard Donoghue leaves open the possibility the five could testify at the trial against their former mentor, and further lift the veil on the sect.

The prosecution has not publicly disclosed its list of witnesses.

But the Albany Times Union said one of the five women, Lauren Salzman, was set to attend.

According to exchanges during the selection of jurors, “Smallville” actress Mack, who was close to Raniere and pleaded guilty to racketeering charges last month, could also be called by the prosecution.

The trial is expected to last around six weeks.

Myanmar frees two Reuters journalists after global outrage

Breaking News May 07, 2019 13:45

By AFP

Yangon – Two Reuters journalists jailed for their reporting on the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar walked out of prison on Tuesday, freed in a presidential amnesty after a vigorous global campaign for their release.

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were mobbed by media as they stepped out of Yangon’s notorious Insein prison after spending more than 16 months in detention.

Their December 2017 arrests made them an international cause celebre and a sign of Myanmar’s deteriorating press freedoms under Nobel laureate and civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Wa Lone, 33, thanked people from “around the world” for advocating for their release and vowed he would return to work.

“I can’t wait to go to my newsroom,” he said. “I am a journalist and I am going to continue.”

Reuters editor-in-chief Stephen Adler said: “We are enormously pleased that Myanmar has released our courageous reporters”.

“Since their arrests 511 days ago, they have become symbols of the importance of press freedom around the world. We welcome their return.”

The two men waved and smiled broadly as they walked out of the jail.

The pair were convicted on charges of violating the official secrets act and sentenced to seven years each.

At the time of their arrest they had been reporting on a September 2017 massacre of 10 Rohingya Muslims in conflict-hit Rakhine state, where the Myanmar army forced some 740,000 of the stateless minority to flee over the border to Bangladesh.

The case prompted an outcry around the world and crushed what was left of Suu Kyi’s legacy as a rights defender.

– ‘We are very happy’ –

Reuters has said the two were imprisoned in retaliation for their expose.

The army jailed seven soldiers for the massacre in a rare response to allegations of atrocities.

Military spokesman Zaw Min Tun said they have no comment on the release except that the case was “undertaken in line with the law”.

While inside, the duo missed numerous family milestones, including the birth of Wa Lone’s daughter.

Families were overjoyed with the news.

“We are very happy,” Chit Su Win, who is married to Kyaw Soe Oo, told AFP. A reunion photo of both couples celebrating, smiling and holding each of their daughters was widely shared on Twitter.

During their imprisonment the journalists were showered with numerous awards and honours in response to their work.

Last month, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo won the prestigious Pulitzer prize.

They were also featured earlier on the cover of TIME magazine as part of its person of the year coverage featuring journalists targeted for their reporting.

The case against them became a byword for the war against press freedom and prompted an international campaign that attracted the support of prominent rights lawyer Amal Clooney, who said Tuesday it had been an “honour to represent” her clients.

Rights groups and legal experts say the prosecution’s case was riddled with irregularities.

A whistleblowing police officer testified during their trial that his superior had ordered his team to trap the reporters in a sting — testimony the judge chose to ignore.

The now-former officer Moe Yan Naing told AFP he was “delighted” the families were back together, and expressed interest in meeting the journalists if they wanted to.

Media advocates and rights organisations praised the release but slammed the original arrest and conviction.

“We congratulate Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo on walking free from unjust imprisonment and applaud they have now been reunited with their families,” said Phil Robertson, Human Rights Watch deputy Asia director, adding they should have “never been arrested” in the first place.

Suu Kyi led her National League for Democracy party to victory in historic 2015 polls, ending decades of military-backed rule.

But the dreams of a new day for Myanmar were short-lived after the army’s campaign against the Rohingya in Rakhine state, which UN investigators have said amounted to genocide.

Myanmar has denied the charges and said it was defending itself against Rohingya militants, who attacked and killed police officers in August 2017.

SHENZHEN

SOUTH CHINA’S technological powerhouse Shenzhen is expected to build about 7,000 5G base stations this year, local authorities said on Saturday.

The city also plans to launch 5G for commercial use by 2020, according to the city’s bureau of industry and information technology.

Enterprises based in the tech hub are expected to launch 5G terminal chips in the first half of this year.

Smartphones and tablets featuring 5G will be launched gradually from the middle of this year, according to Xu Zhibin, deputy director of the bureau.

“Shenzhen is leading the world in 5G research and development,” Xu said.

The city is also actively promoting the deep integration of 5G with other technologies and products to build a sound and competitive cluster of 5G industry, he added.

Shenzhen said in January that it would launch a pilot project for 5G commercial use in 2019.

Chinese cities are adopting the 5G network to meet public demand.

In late January, the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in southern China’s Guangdong province launched a 5G base station. An indoor 5G network will be installed in the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station by the end of this year.

FREE WI-FI services will be available on 4,200 public city buses nationwide in South Korea, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced.

In an effort to improve information accessibility and reduce telecommunication costs, the ministry will provide 100 gigabytes of data per bus every month for public use. Buses with Wi-Fi services will have a ministry-issued sticker attached for easy recognition.

Public Wi-Fi services are available at some 13,000 designated areas across the nation, such as community centres and traditional markets. However, the need to expand the service to public transportation was apparent for network users on the move, the ministry explained. The initial plan is to roll out 4,200 city buses with Wi-Fi services this month, and equip another 19,800 buses by the second half of this year.

While the ministry will monitor the quality and security of the public Wi-Fi services, it is still not advisable to do financial transactions or release personal information while using it, the ministry cautioned.

Huawei jumps ahead of Apple in tough smartphone market

SAN FRANCISCO

CHINA-BASED Huawei outsold Apple’s iPhones in the first quarter of this year, seizing the California company’s second place spot in a tightening smartphone market dominated by Samsung, a tracker said Tuesday.

A total of 310.8 million smartphones were shipped globally during the first three months of this year in a 6.6 per cent decline from the same period in 2018, according to preliminary data from the Chinese-owned International Data Corporation.

It was the sixth consecutive quarter of decline for global smartphone shipments, the market tracker added.

IDC saw the results as a sign that 2019 will be another down year overall for smartphone shipments, apart from strong growth by Huawei.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that Huawei is laser focused on growing its stature in the world of mobile devices, with smartphones being its lead horse,” said IDC mobile device programme director Ryan Reith.

“The overall smartphone market continues to be challenged in almost all areas, yet Huawei was able to grow shipments by 50 per cent.”

South Korean consumer electronics behemoth Samsung saw smartphone shipments drop 8.1 per cent to 71.9 million in the first quarter.

Huawei, meanwhile, weighed in with 50.3 per cent growth to ship 59.1 million smartphones and put it within “striking distance” of Samsung, according to IDC.

Apple had a challenging first quarter, with iPhone shipments dropping by a “staggering” 30.2 per cent from a year earlier to 36.4 million units, IDC reported.

Price cuts in China along with favourable trade-in deals were not enough to coax people into upgrading to new iPhones, the market tracker said.

Apple delivered stronger-than-expected financial results for the past quarter as gains in services helped offset slumping iPhone sales, sparking a rally in shares of the technology giant.

An overall slowdown in the high-end smartphone market has been seen as a symptom of people waiting longer to upgrade to new models and a lack of the kind of captivating innovation that inspires them to do just that.

“Consumers continue to hold on to their phones longer than before as newer higher priced models offer little incentive to shell out top dollar to upgrade,” said IDC research manager Anthony Scarsella.

“Moreover, the pending arrival of 5G handsets could have consumers waiting until both the networks and devices are ready for prime time in 2020.”

COBO, a leading developer of consumer blockchain products in China, has unveiled new cloud services, in a move to better cater to institutional clients.

The new personalised services include Cobo Wallet-as-a-service and Cobo Staking-as-a-service. The former aims to help lower barriers for new blockchain business, and the latter is designed to provide institutional customers with digital asset storage services and value-added digital assets services, the company said.

Cobo’s chief technology officer Jiang Changhao said as the blockchain sector is still at the early stage of development, many entrepreneurs need to spent a huge amount of money on the construction of basic infrastructure.

“The Cobo WaaS aims to reduce 90 per cent of the costs for those blockchain entrepreneurs,” Jiang said. “It will help blockchain startups streamline operations and build the infrastructure.”

Combining the application of distributed data storage, encryption algorithms and other advanced technologies, blockchain offers an open and decentralised database of any transaction involving money, goods, property and more.

It provides a high level of security by creating a record whose authenticity could be verified by the whole community.

Cobo said the Cobo WaaS and Cobo StaaS are innovative services based on its custodial service, dubbed Cobo Custody. Through the decentralised storage of private keys in North America, Europe, Oceania and other regions in the globe, the new services will help protect the digital assets from the physical and systemic risks.

“Currently, staking has become the next target for many big name investors,” Jiang added. “More than 80 per cent of proof-of-stake blockchain projects and 40 per cent of token suppliers have participated in the staking economy.”

Mao Shixing, Cobo’s chief executive officer, said with the booming staking economy, professional services digital assets custodial services will go mainstream.

Founded in 2017, the Beijing-headquartered company aims to be a one-stop shop for everything crypto. Its flagship software wallet, Cobo wallet, offers proof-of-stake pooling services. And the company also has also released an advanced military-grade cryptocurrency hardware wallet.

Last year, the company raised $13 million in its latest Series A financing, led by Danhua Capital and Wu Capital.

CHINA is accelerating the deployment of the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6)-based network, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

China will launch a special campaign to upgrade the network infrastructure, improve IPv6 service and make the terminal equipment better support IPv6, said an official with the MIIT.

“We decided to finish transforming 13 internet backbones to the IPv6 network by the end of 2019”.

The country will strengthen the security in the IPv6 network and support relevant companies and institutions to carry out research on the prevention of risks in the IPv6 network in emerging industries, including the Industrial Internet, Internet of Things and car networking, the ministry said.

The IPv6 is considered the next generation of the internet, allowing much higher theoretical limits on the number of IP addresses than the current IPv4 system. China in 2017 issued a plan to encourage large-scale adoption of the IPv6 network.

According to the plan, by the end of 2025, network and terminal devices will fully support the adoption of IPv6 in China, and it will have the largest number of IPv6 users in the world by the end of 2025.

AFTER announcing a 133 trillion won (Bt3.62 trillion) investment in research and development of non-memory semiconductors, Samsung Electronics said its artificial intelligence research institute in Montreal, Canada, has been expanded to support the company’s drive for system chips.

The company said the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology’s AI Lab in Montreal has been incorporated into the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (Mila) by recently moving into Mila’s building.

Founded by professor Yoshua Bengio of the University of Montreal, Mila is one of the best research centres in the field of deep learning and has a partnership with the University of Montreal and McGill University.

Samsung is the first Korean business to be located at the Canadian institute for deep learning, which hires globally renowned AI experts.

By moving into Mila, Samsung has expanded the size of its AI Montreal lab, whose workforce will additionally focus on development of new system chips that are necessary for AI, especially in the fields of unsupervised learning, generative adversarial networks, new deep learning and on-device AI algorithms.

To support such efforts, this AI Lab has recruited leaders in deep learning research, including Simon Lacoste-Julien, a professor at the University of Montreal, who recently joined as the leader of the lab, the company said.

Samsung also plans to dispatch R&D personnel from its device solutions division to Montreal over time and to utilise the AI lab as a base for training AI researchers and collaborating with other advanced AI research institutes.

“Samsung’s collaboration with Mila is well established already and has been productive and built strong trust on both sides,” said professor Yoshua Bengio.

“With a new SAIT lab in the midst of the recently inaugurated Mila building, and many exciting research challenges ahead of us in AI, I expect even more mutually positive outcomes in the future.“

SAIT and Bengio have collaborated on deep learning algorithm research since 2014, successfully publishing three papers in academic journals.

“SAIT focuses on research and development – not only in next-generation semiconductors but also innovative AI as a seed technology in system semiconductors,” said Hwang Sung-woo, executive vice president and deputy head of SAIT.

“SAIT AI Lab Montreal will play a key role within Samsung to redefine AI theory and deep learning algorithms for the next 10 years.”
