CHINESE smartphone maker Oppo on last week announced its first-ever partnership with Singaporean content creators during the launch of its Reno series of smartphones.

Dubbed the Oppo Makers, these local content creators – dance choreographer Gin Lam, e-sports player Nash Nizam from Team Flash, visual artist Tiffany Lovage and photographer Jovin Yong – will use Oppo’s latest Reno smartphones for their work.

“Singapore is a key market for Oppo and we want to build a special relationship with Singaporeans through the Oppo Makers,” says Peter Huang, president of Oppo for Asia Pacific.

As part of the launch campaign for the new Reno smartphones, the Oppo Makers will be hosting a monthly series of public workshops, starting with a dance video creation workshop by Gin Lam. This will be followed by an e-sports mobile gaming clinic in June by Nash Nizam, an illustration workshop by Tiffany Lovage in July and a night photography session with Jovin in August.

Oppo says it will reveal more details about these workshops soon.

Announced earlier this month in Shanghai, the Oppo Reno series consists of the standard edition Reno and the Reno 10x Zoom. Both models have a similar industrial design featuring an all-glass body.

The Oled displays on the Reno (6.4 inches) and the Reno 10x Zoom (6.6 inches) are surrounded by thin borders. The front camera is hidden inside the smartphone body when not in use. It pops up at an angle – like a shark’s fin emerging from the water – when taking a selfie photo or for facial recognition.

The Reno 10x Zoom is named after its 10x hybrid zoom feature, which combines the 5x optical zoom feature from its telephoto rear camera and a 48-megapixel (MP) primary camera to take photos of faraway objects. The telephoto camera uses a periscope-like design like the one found in the Huawei P30 Pro smartphone. In addition, the smartphone has a third ultra-wide-angle camera.

The standard Reno, on the other hand, comes with only two cameras, the 48MP main camera and a 5MP depth-sensing camera. It features a mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor, 8GB of system memory and 256GB of internal storage. It will be available on April 27 (Saturday) at $849.

The higher-end Reno 10x Zoom, which uses the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip, is priced at $1,199. It will be available in June from all major telcos and other official retailers.

Oppo was the fastest growing smartphone brand for the premium segment last year, according to market research firm Counterpoint Research.

The brand grew by 863 per cent to capture 6 per cent of the global market share for smartphones that cost US$400 (S$545, Bt12,765) and above. Apple was the leader in the premium segment last year with 51 per cent market share.

Rome – A teenaged actor who appeared in an award-winning film about child criminals in Naples has been stabbed in the Italian organised crime stronghold, media reported Monday.

Ukranian 18-year old Artem Tkachuk played one of the gun-wielding, drug-peddling teens in “Piranhas”, based on a novel by renowned investigative journalist and mafia expert Roberto Saviano.

Tkachuk was attacked by a so-called “baby gang” in the early hours after a night out last week with a friend, national dailies said.

The actor was stabbed twice while his friend was beaten. Neither suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police believe the youngster may have been set upon because of his role in the film, which won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the 69th Berlin film festival in February and is coming to European cinemas this summer.

Italy’s far-right League party is backing a bill to tackle the baby-gang phenomenon, which would lower the age of criminal responsibility in the country from 14 to 12.

According to the National Observatory on Childhood and Adolescence, 6.5 percent of youngsters in Naples — home to the feared Camorra crime group — belong to baby gangs.

Anti-mafia author Saviano has lived under armed guard since publishing his international bestseller “Gomorrah” in 2006.

The Religious Affairs Ministry has collaborated with several local chefs to train cooks in Saudi Arabia who will serve haj pilgrims later this year.

Haj Management Committee (PPIH) head Arsyad Hidayat said the ministry’s collaboration was expected to improve the quality of food served to haj pilgrims.

“We have recruited chefs from the NHI Bandung Institute of Tourism in West Java to train cooks in Saudi Arabia who will serve meals for Indonesian haj pilgrims,” Arsyad said on Sunday as quoted by Antara.

“The chefs will train cooks in three regions across the country: Mecca, Madinah and Masyair,” he added.

He went on to say that the training sessions would provide the requisite cooking utensils and food rations, in addition to support from assistant chefs.

Determining food rations was particularly vital as the cooks would have to prepare a large number of meals during the pilgrimage, according to Arsyad.

“They will have to cook around 20,000 meals per day; a very large quantity,” he said.

He said the PPIH would consult with nutrition experts to properly arrange the catering menu for haj pilgrims.

“Advice from nutrition experts is essential as we have to ensure that the meals contain just the right amount of carbohydrates, protein and water to keep the pilgrims healthy during physical activities,” Arsyad said.

British police are investigating after a photograph believed to be of late footballer Emiliano Sala’s body appeared online.

“We are aware that a picture reported to be of Mr Sala’s body has been shared on social media channels and are disgusted that somebody did this,” Dorset Police told AFP in a statement.

“It is clearly a very difficult time for Mr Sala’s family and they should not have to endure additional pain.

“We are investigating this incident,” he added.

The image is believed to have been taken at the Holly Tree Lodge mortuary in Bournemouth, south England, following the plane crash that killed the 28-year-old striker.

The small plane carrying the player came down in the Channel en route to Cardiff on January 21, two days after he completed his transfer from French side Nantes.

The plane did not have a commercial licence, according to British investigators, but the journey would have been allowed as a “private” flight in which costs are shared between pilot and passenger.

Pilot David Ibbotson, 59, who was flying the Piper PA-46 Malibu, has never been found.

Sala’s body was recovered from the submerged wreckage on February 7.

BEIJING: Malaysia’s Musang King is so popular here that unscrupulous vendors have used the name to label low quality fruit to attract customers.

Although such cases were not rampant, Malaysia wants to protect the good name of this superior species produced only in the country, said PLS Plantations chief executive office Lee Hun Kheng.

And now, a company specialising in smart agricultural technology has a solution to the problem by planting small chip on the shell of the fruit.

The chip, which contains information on the fruits and their plantations, could be read by scanning a QR code when it reaches consumers.

Lee said this was also a move to prepare for the export of whole durian to China, which only imports frozen Malaysian durian, including Musang King for now.

Despite his busy schedule, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad – who is here for the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation – made a tour of the Malaysia Durian Festival here Saturday (April 27).

Accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, they tried out various durian products at the event.

The Malaysian Prime Minister also witnessed the exchange of documents between PLS Plantation and four companies – FGV Holdings from Malaysia and China’s Shanghai Greenland Group, ZTE Corporation and PTSKY – for the distribution and promotion of the fruits in the country.

Singapore – Actress Jacqueline Wong has been spotted in public for the first time since she was caught in a cheating scandal with singer-songwriter Andy Hui.

The 30-year-old was seen leaving the Los Angeles International Airport with a female friend at 8.40pm local time on Thursday (April 25), Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily reported.

Wong, who was wearing a black cap and face mask, declined to answer any questions when approached by journalists from Apple Daily. Wong and her friend were then seen leaving in a taxi after waiting in the queue for about five minutes.

The whereabouts of the TVB actress have been of interest since a video showing Wong and Hui kissing in the back of a taxi was released on April 16. A tearful Hui, who is married to pop star Sammi Cheng, said sorry for his behaviour at a press conference on the same day, while Wong, who is dating actor Kenneth Ma, issued a statement of apology later.

However, sources told Apple Daily that Wong went to Macau to stay with her second sister instead. Wong then flew to the United States via the Philippines on Thursday, in what is seen as a move to evade the Hong Kong media.

Apple Daily said it was likely that Wong had chosen to go to the US as she was born in New York before her family moved to Vancouver, Canada.

Suspected Banksy work tackles climate protests

A new work believed to be by British street artist Banksy appeared near London’s Marble Arch on Friday, where climate change protesters have camped out for days.

The work features a child clasping a symbol of Extinction Rebellion, the group behind the protests, crouching next to a spade and a new plant.

“From this moment despair ends and tactics begin,” reads a sign next to the artwork, located at one of central London’s busiest road junctions.

“I think it’s virtually a certainty it’s him,” auctioneer Andrew Tetley told London’s Evening Standard newspaper.

“It hasn’t been confirmed obviously that it is Banksy yet, but clearly there’s a lot of excitement,” added street art fan Lindsey Solomons, 53.

“I think the message speaks for itself really, that if we don’t do something about the planet clearly we’re going to be in a desperate state, and he captures that so well,” she told AFP.

Environmentalists used festive but highly disruptive rallies since last week to focus global attention on climate change, bringing parts of London to a standstill.

The entire campaign saw police make 1,130 arrests and press charges against 69 people.

Banksy, whose identity is known to only a handful of friends, caused a sensation in October when one of his paintings began shredding itself, just after selling for $1.4 million (1.2 million euros).

The artist has previously espoused themes such as immigration and refugees, the Palestinian cause and the yellow vest movement in France.

Vietnam police bust $1bn illegal online gambling ring

ASEAN+ April 28, 2019 01:00

By AFP

Police in Vietnam broke up an online gambling ring that had handled more than $1 billion in bets and arrested 22 people, reports said Saturday, in what is believed to be the largest-ever internet betting operation in the communist country.

Most forms of gambling are illegal for locals in Vietnam but black market betting flourishes, especially on sports.

Massive raids in cities and provinces across the country this week came after the discovery of hundreds of thousands of accounts tied to a ring processing an estimated $1.28 billion in funds, state-run Thanh Nien newspaper said.

The gambling ring was operating in a “sophisticated manner that had been so difficult to detect”, the report said, citing police sources.

It explained that gamblers who visited the website Fxx88.com were asked to deposit cash into banks in exchange for virtual money in coded accounts, mostly for football betting.

The accused hid the scope of the funds by using bank accounts with small amounts of money to conduct transactions.

So far a total of 22 people have been arrested including 12 organisers, police said.

Authorities declined to comment when asked for additional details.

The one-party state has started loosening its rules on domestic gambling, allowing Vietnamese to bet in casinos on a trial basis and opening up some sports betting.

But lucrative illegal operations have mushroomed, prompting a crackdown.

Last year, 91 people — several of them high-ranking police officials — were either jailed or ordered to pay fines for their links with a gambling ring that handled $420 million in wagers.

Among those imprisoned was a former head of the “high-technology department” in charge of policing online gambling at the powerful Ministry of Public Security.

Investigations from that case are ongoing.

A former chief inspector at the Ministry of Information and Communication was arrested in Hanoi on Thursday for failing to spot illicit activity in the $420-million ring.

The communist party headed by conservative leader Nguyen Phu Trong has carried out an unprecedented anti-graft campaign nationwide.

Dozens of executives alongside former and current officials have been jailed while harassment of activists has mounted.

Assange lawyers file ‘extortion’ complaint in Spain court

Breaking News April 28, 2019 01:00

By AFP

Madrid – Julian Assange’s lawyers have filed a court complaint in Spain against a group of Spaniards they allege extorted the WikiLeaks founder and Ecuador’s foreign ministry, a source in his defence team said Saturday.

Assange, who for seven years lived holed up in London’s Ecuadoran embassy where he had taken refuge to avoid extradition to Sweden on rape accusations, was arrested on April 11 after Quito terminated his asylum.

The 47-year-old founder of WikiLeaks, which exposed everything from US military secrets to the wealthy’s tax evasion, is now awaiting sentencing for breaching his British bail conditions in 2012.

The source, who wished to remain anonymous, said the complaint was against “a group of Spaniards who allegedly engaged in extortion and the embassy’s employees and Ecuador’s foreign ministry.”

The source added an investigation was ongoing and alleged “espionage” in the embassy against Assange, refusing to give further details.

According to Spanish media reports, four Spaniards have videos and personal documents of Assange.

Online daily eldiario.es said they somehow got these via an alleged spying system set up in the embassy that included security cameras and employees taking photos of all documents handled by Assange.

They allegedly tried to extort three million euros ($3.3 million) out of WikiLeaks not to publish any of it, Spanish media report.

Eldiario.es, which had access to the written complaint that was filed to Spain’s top-level National Court, says Assange’s lawyers also accuse Ecuador of spying on him.

The National Court could not comment when contacted by AFP.

That contrasts with Ecuadoran President Lenin Moreno’s version of events.

In an interview with the Guardian newspaper, he alleged Assange had tried to set up a “centre for spying” in Ecuador’s embassy.

Last year, Quito cut his internet and mobile phone access, accusing him of breaking “a written commitment” not to interfere in its and allies’ foreign policies.

The move infuriated Assange, who sued the government for violating his “fundamental rights” by limiting his access to the outside world.

Now in prison in Britain, Assange is also fighting a US extradition warrant relating to the release by WikiLeaks of a huge cache of official documents.
