Cuddly polar bear cub makes splash in Berlin debut

Berlin’s latest zoo celebrity, a fluffy polar bear cub, made her first tentative steps on the public stage Friday, with media hungry to anoint her the rightful successor to late lamented superstar Knut.

Nuzzling her mother Tonja, taking a dip in a pool in her enclosure and sniffing the fresh air, the still unnamed three and a half month old seemed oblivious to the phalanx of cameras gathered for her coming-out at the Tierpark zoo in the east of the capital.

Under grey skies, the cub splashed in the water, lolled on the grey stones outside the breeding burrow where she has lived since her birth on December 1 and gnawed on tree bark as she explored her new surroundings.

Following her media photo-op, she will be presented to the public on Saturday.

The mortality of polar bears tends to be very high in the first weeks. Tonja lost three of her cubs in less than two years.

To the great relief of her keepers, the new female has made it through the crucial first three months when a captive cub’s chances of survival hang in the balance.

“We’re very happy with her development,” the zoo’s polar bear vet Florian Sicks said in a statement.

Tierpark is hoping she will take the place in Germans’ hearts once occupied by Knut, the universally adored polar bear born in 2006 and hand-reared by west Berlin zookeepers after being rejected by his mother.

Knut’s worldwide fame led to appearances on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine and on German postage stamps and brought in millions of euros from visits and merchandising.

But the cuddly icon died suddenly of a suspected brain tumour in 2011 at the age of four, sparking grief amongst his army of fans.

A bronze statue of Knut now stands in the west Berlin Zoo.

Its Arctic habitat threatened by global warming, the polar bear is listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

A European Union breeding plan is attempting to boost numbers of the bear, whose population in the wild stands at around 26,000, according to the IUCN.

Chinese waltz enthusiasts have cause for excitement as the Kempinski Hotel Beijing Lufthansa Center has announced its annual waltz gala, the Kempinski Vienna Ball Beijing, set to be held on April 13.

The hotel has hosted the event annually for the last four years as part of their efforts to bring Austrian culture to China, and this year’s ball will again try to bridge the passion for music and art between Beijing and Vienna.

Friedrich Stift, Austrian ambassador to China, said that he hopes the ball will provide “unparalleled Viennese culture and one of the most important insights into the Austrian lifestyle to Beijing, the city of the imperial traditions and the joy of life.”

The ball will attempt to advance local community art, according to organizers, and will feature a performance from one of Europe’s leading ensembles, the Strauss Festival Orchestra Vienna, with reality TV star Allan Wu acting as the event’s bilingual host.

Former state opera solo dancer Heinz Heidenreich will lead guests in a quadrille dance during the night, helping them to dance with grace, style and confidence.

“It’s in Kempinski’s DNA to bring the same appreciation to the fans, connoisseurs and aficionados of great music, art and fashion of Beijing,” said Brice Péan, managing director of the Kempinski Hotel Beijing Lufthansa Center.

The ball will also feature an Austrian gourmet feast, showcasing the country’s traditional cuisine, and represents the best way of experiencing European culture, according to Péan.

“Since we created the tradition, we need to maintain it,” he told China Daily’s app.

While the Vienna Ball has a history of more than 80 years, 2019’s edition is to be ambassador Stift’s second event. He said he hopes the ball can help develop friendships between the people of China and Austria.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today categorically said that Bangladesh in future will send its cricket team abroad after examining and reviewing the security measures of the host countries.

“In the future, whenever we send our cricket team abroad, we will do that after examining and reviewing the security matters of the host countries,” she said.

The prime minister said this while inaugurating the four-lane second Kanchpur Bridge on the river Shitalakkhya, four-lane flyover at Bhulta and railway overpass at Latifpur on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway through a videoconference from her official residence Ganobhaban in Dhaka.

She also said that Bangladesh always gives the highest security whenever any foreign cricket team comes to play here.

“We give them appropriate security and we always do that,” she added.

The prime minister’s comments came as some of Bangladesh national cricket team players narrowly escaped from a shooting in a mosque at Christchurch in New Zealand that left 49 devotees dead including three Bangladeshi and injured dozen others.

“Our cricket players were supposed to go to that mosque, they went there, but on their way an injured woman did not let them enter the mosque and the cricket players escaped,” she said.

Condemning the hatred, terrorist and militant attacks in New Zealand, Sheikh Hasina said that there is nothing more heinous than killing people while they are performing their prayers.

“I will hope that the world community not only condemns this incident, but also take steps to eliminate militancy and terrorism forever,” she said.

The prime minister said she always believes that militants and terrorists have no religion, country or nation. “They are just terrorists … actions will have to be taken against them considering them as the terrorists,” she said.

She mentioned that Bangladesh with its hectic efforts managed to protect the county from militancy and terrorism although many people raise many types of question.

“Militancy and terrorism could never bring any welfare to anyone except bad things,” she said.

Talking about religious freedom, Sheikh Hasina said that it is the right of all people and Bangladesh has established the rights for all appropriately.

“People from all faiths can perform their respective religions freely here,” she said.

Media reports said the shooting at two crowded mosques during Friday prayers in Christchurch left at least 49 dead and many others injured.

Forty-one of those slain were at the Masjid al Noor in central Christchurch, police said, adding seven more were killed at the Linwood Ave mosque, three of them outside of the building.

Google Indonesia has enabled its clients to pay for advertisements in rupiah to assist those with Indonesian billing addresses.

“We have changed our policy to automatically charge our clients with Indonesian billing addresses in rupiah instead of US dollar,” Google Indonesia managing director Randy Jusuf said on Friday, adding that Google’s team would bill its clients themselves as part of its effort to provide a better service.

Communications manager Jason Tedjasukmana added that the new billing policy would be applicable to all kinds of advertisements on the platform, including on YouTube. He said the company had effectively implemented its new policy this year following requests from its clients.

Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara lauded Google Indonesia’s efforts to charge people in rupiah as it would make it easier for local advertisers as they would not have to convert their payments into another currency.

Bank Indonesia has promoted the use of rupiah for transactions in Indonesia since 2015 to help stabilize the exchange rate of the local currency.

He also expressed appreciation for Google setting up an office in Indonesia because aside from making the company more compliant with tax regulations, it was beneficial to advertisers as they could gain better and easier access to customer services.

The minister expressed hope more platforms would follow in Google’s footsteps. “I hope more companies bill their clients in rupiah like Google in the future,” he said.

A woman of Bangladesh origin who was killed in shooting at a mosque in New Zealand’s Christchurch reportedly received bullets while trying to save her husband, family says.

Deceased Husne Ara Parvin, 42, hailed from Golapganj upazila in Sylhet and was married to Farid Uddin Ahmed of Bishwanath upazila, our Sylhet correspondent reports.

They settled in New Zealand sometime after 1994, said her nephew Mahfuz Chowdhury.

Farid Uddin had been physically sick for years and was confined to a wheelchair. Parvin, like every other Fridays, took her husband to the mosque around one and a half hours before the horror unfolded, he said.

Leaving her husband to the mosque for men, Parvin went to the other mosque meant for women to offer her prayers.

As all hell broke loose at the mosque where her husband was, she rushed to the scene and caught in the line of fire, Mahfuz said quoting his relatives in New Zealand.

However, her husband survived the attack as other devotees managed to wheel him out of the mosque.

Mahfuz Chowdhury said: “We came to know about the attack and Parvin aunt’s death around an hour later as Hima Begum (another aunt) called us from New Zealand”.

Three persons of Bangladesh origin have been confirmed dead so far and four others injured in the Christchurch mosque shooting in New Zealand today.

From what could be learned, the deceased have been living in Christchurch for quite some time now.

The incident left 49 people killed and scores of others injured as a gunman launched attacks at two mosques during the Friday Jummah prayers.

Washington – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo voiced hopes Friday that nuclear disarmament negotiations with North Korea would continue following reports that Pyongyang is considering suspending the talks.

“We are hopeful that we can continue to hold this conversation,” he told reporters.

Russian news agency TASS reported earlier that the North’s vice foreign minister Choe Son Hui rejected yielding to “US demands in any form,” after the Hanoi summit between leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump ended without agreement.

Trump told a post-summit press conference in Hanoi that the North Korean leader had promised he would maintain his moratorium on missile and nuclear tests.

Analysts voiced fears that the change of tone from Pyongyang could mean a resumption of tests, but Pompeo remained upbeat about the pause staying in place.

“In Hanoi on multiple occasions, (Kim) spoke directly to the president and made a commitment that he would not resume nuclear testing, nor would he resume missile testing,” Pompeo said.

“We have every expectation that he will live up to that commitment.”

New Zealand mosque attacks: what we know

Christchurch, New Zealand – The quiet New Zealand city of Christchurch was struck by two deadly attacks on Friday, with 49 people killed and another 20 seriously injured after gun assaults on mosques as Muslims worshipped.

Here is what we know so far about the attacks:

What happened?

During afternoon prayers on Friday — Islam’s holy day — a gunman opened fire inside the Masjid al Noor mosque in central Christchurch, killing forty-one. Another seven were slain at a second mosque five kilometres away in suburban Linwood, three of them outside the building. It is unclear where the remaining victim died.

Witnesses said some victims were shot at close range, with a Palestinian man at one of the mosques saying he saw someone shot in the head.

He described shots fired in quick succession and scenes of panic as people started running out “covered in blood”.

Another said he saw his wife lying dead outside as he escaped, with one more saying he witnessed children being shot.

What was the police response?

Police imposed a city-wide lockdown, sending armed officers to a number of scenes, and two IEDs (improvised explosive devices) were found attached to a vehicle and neutralised.

Three men and a woman were detained. One of the men was later charged with murder, and two others remained in custody, though their role in the attacks was not clear.

Police warned Muslims not to visit mosques “anywhere in New Zealand”, a country of nearly five million where mass shootings are rare.

Amid heightened tensions, the military carried out controlled explosions on two bags left unattended in central Auckland, although they turned out not to be suspicious.

Christchurch city council offered a helpline for parents looking for kids attending a mass climate change rally nearby.

New Zealand police also evacuated residents living near a property in the city of Dunedin, some 350 kilometres (220 miles) from Christchurch, that they believe is linked to the attacks.

Who were the victims?

A Jordanian man was killed in the attack, the country’s foreign ministry said, the first and only victim identified so far.

People from around the world were in the mosque at the time of the assault.

Among them were were six Indonesians — three of whom were reported safe, the country’s foreign minister Retno Marsudi said, adding they were searching for the others.

A Saudi Arabian man, two Malaysians, two Turks and at least five Jordanians were among those wounded.

India’s high commissioner to New Zealand said nine people of Indian nationality or origin were missing.

Young children were among 48 people being treated at Christchurch Hospital.

Some narrowly escaped the carnage, including the Bangladesh cricket team who arrived at the Masjid al Noor mosque minutes after the shooting began.

Manager Khaled Mashud said the team saw “bloodied people coming out of the mosque… we kept our heads down in the bus in case of any firing”.

What is known about the attacker?

He has not been officially named, but Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he was an Australian citizen, and described him as “an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist”.

He published a racist manifesto on Twitter before the shooting then livestreamed his rampage on Facebook.

Entitled “The Great Replacement”, the 74-page manifesto said the gunman — who identified himself as an Australia-born, 28-year-old white male from a low-income, working-class family — had wanted to attack Muslims.

The gunman also said he had travelled for several years, visiting France, Spain and Portugal, but Australian media reported before going to New Zealand he had been a personal fitness trainer in the town of Grafton north of Sydney.

The title of the manifesto has the same name as a conspiracy theory originating in France that believes European populations are being displaced in their homelands by immigrant groups with higher birth rates.

A number of pictures were posted to a social media account of a semi-automatic weapon covered in the names of historical figures, many of whom were involved in the killing of Muslims.

Queen Elizabeth II, New Zealand’s head of state, said she was “deeply saddened” by the attacks on two mosques on Friday which left 49 people dead.

“I have been deeply saddened by the appalling events in Christchurch… At this tragic time, my thoughts and prayers are with all New Zealanders,” she said in a message.

“Prince Philip and I send our condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives,” she said, paying tribute to emergency workers and volunteers providing support to the injured.

Queen Elizabeth, 92, the world’s oldest and longest-serving living monarch, is queen of 15 other realms besides Britain, including Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

She last visited New Zealand in 2002 as part of celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of her accession to the throne.

Christchurch – The gunman in a mosque shooting in Christchurch livestreamed the incident for 17 minutes, local media reported.

The shooter identified himself as “Brenton Tarrant” – a white, 28-year-old Australia-born man, NZ Herald reported. The livestream began as the gunman drove to the Al Noor Mosque in Deans Ave, parking his car in a nearby driveway.

According to NZ Herald, the beige stationwagon contains a cache of weapons and ammunition in the front passenger seat and boot, along with petrol cannisters.

The gunman was armed with at least one semi-automatic firearm and multiple ammunition clips. Messages in white writing were scrawled on the gun and ammunition.

Once inside he began shooting indiscriminately. A second victim tried to crawl for their life in the main hallway but was shot several more times.

People cowering in corners of a room were all shot as the gunman blocked the hallway, cutting off anyone’s attempt to escape.

The gunman stalked the mosque rooms firing repeatedly, stopping several times to re-load, NZ Herald reported.

He then exited the mosque through the front door – after just under three minutes inside and headed into the street – firing random shots as cars drove past.

He returned to a beige Subaru stationwagon parked in a nearby driveway to get more ammunition from the boot.

He fired more shots on the street at no apparent target and said: “Looks like we won’t get the bird today boys”.

He then re-entered the mosque to check for survivors – and began firing again into the people lying motionless.

The 17-minute video ends as the gunman drives away from the scene at speed.

In a lenghty manifesto published online the supposed shooter outlined who he was and why he carried out the massacre at the Christchurch mosque, NZ Herald reported.

Boeing suspends 737 MAX deliveries as France probes black boxes

Washington – US aerospace giant Boeing said Thursday it was suspending deliveries of its top-selling 737 MAX as French investigators took delivery of the black boxes from the Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed all 157 passengers and crew.

The MAX has been grounded worldwide following the disaster — the second involving the model in five months — and the fallout has left the company, regulators and airlines scrambling to respond.

“We are pausing the delivery of the 737 MAX until we come up with a solution,” a Boeing spokesman said, adding that “we are going to continue the production, but we are assessing our capacities.”

France’s BEA air safety agency confirmed it has received the black box recorders from the plane, which was just four months old and crashed minutes after takeoff from Addis Ababa on Sunday.

Starting Friday, BEA investigators will try to retrieve information from the cockpit voice and flight data recorders, which were damaged in the disaster.

Thousands of miles (kilometers) away, distraught families were demanding answers as they visited the deep black crater where the plane smashed into a field outside the capital, disintegrating on impact.

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, sent the black boxes to France because it does not have the equipment to analyze the data.

The information that they contain helps explain 90 percent of all crashes, according to aviation experts.

On Wednesday, US authorities said new evidence showed similarities between the Ethiopia crash and that of a Lion Air flight in Indonesia in October that killed 189 people.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said findings from the crash site near Addis Ababa and “newly refined satellite data” warranted “further investigation of the possibility of a shared cause for the two incidents.”

– Boeing shares hit –

An FAA emergency order grounded 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9 aircraft until further notice, effectively taking the aircraft out of the skies globally.

The move came after a growing number of airlines and countries had already decided not to fly the planes or ban them from their airspace until it is determined there are no safety issues.

US President Donald Trump told reporters the “safety of the American people and all peoples is our paramount concern.”

FAA acting chief Daniel Elwell said the agency had been “working tirelessly” to find the cause of the accident but faced delays because of the damage to the flight data recorders.

The new information shows “the track of that airplane was close enough to the track of the Lion Air flight” to warrant the grounding of the airplanes so more information can be gathered to determine if there is a link, Elwell said Wednesday on CNBC.

Boeing’s shares have fallen 12 percent in the days after the crash in Ethiopia, wiping out nearly $30 billion in value.

The MAX series is Boeing’s fastest-selling model, but it is still relatively new with fewer than 500 in service.

There are 74 registered in the United States and 387 in use worldwide with 59 carriers, according to the FAA.

– Pilots’ concerns –

The accounts of the recent crashes were echoed in concerns registered by US pilots on how the MAX 8 behaves.

At least four American pilots complained following the Lion Air crash that the aircraft would suddenly pitch downward shortly after takeoff, according to documents reviewed by AFP on the Aviation Safety Reporting System, a voluntary incident database maintained by NASA.

In two anonymous reports on flights just after the Lion Air disaster, pilots disconnected the autopilot and corrected the plane’s trajectory.

It was unclear if US transport authorities review the database or investigated the incidents. However, the FAA said this week it had ordered Boeing to update its flight software and training.

Questions about the Lion Air crash have honed in on an automated stall prevention system, the MCAS, designed to automatically point the plane’s nose downwards if it is in danger of stalling.

According to the flight data recorder, the pilots of Lion Air Flight 610 struggled to control the aircraft as the MCAS repeatedly pushed the nose down following takeoff.

The Ethiopian Airlines pilots reported similar difficulties before their aircraft plunged to the ground.

According to The New York Times, air traffic controllers observed the Ethiopian Airlines plane “oscillating up and down by hundreds of feet” prior to the crash.

Speaking in a “panicky voice,” the doomed aircraft’s captain requested permission to return to the airport almost immediately after takeoff as the plane “accelerated to abnormal speed,” the newspaper reported Thursday, citing a person who had reviewed the air traffic communications.

“Break break, request back to home,” the Times quoted the pilot as saying just prior to the crash. “Request vector for landing.”

Boeing was criticized after the Lion Air crash for allegedly failing to adequately inform 737 pilots about the functioning of the stall prevention system.

Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde GebreMariam said the doomed flight’s captain Yared Mulugeta Getachew, 29, was an experienced aviator with more than 8,000 flight hours.
