CHINESE telecom companies have furthered their work in the 5G market, with a number of companies recently announcing their 5G development blueprints.

Telecom assets operator China Tower has discussed with China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom the laying and repairing of the 5G network and base stations.

It is aimed for the 5G technology to be in pre-commercial use in 2019, according to Hong Kong Economic Times (HKET). A consensus however is yet to be reached.

The three telecom carriers have been empowered to use low-and medium-band spectrum for the construction of a nationwide 5G trial by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The telecom carriers will build 5G base stations in China’s 25 major cities during the initial development period, said HKET, quoting an industry insider. Subways, entertainment spaces, sports halls and commercial buildings will be covered by the 5G network, the insider said.

CTIA, a US-based industry association of wireless carriers, said that China is best prepared for 5G technology, that major Chinese providers have committed to specific launch dates, and that government has committed to allocate a spectrum for the carriers. Online market intelligence platform IPlytics said telecom equipment providers Huawei and ZET owned standard essential patents on 5G technology, accounting for 7.9 per cent and 4.1 per cent of the global market.

Although Huawei has been banned by some countries such as the US, Japan, and Australia to build the 5G network, this is not a shock to the company’s business, said He Qixiang, director of marketing development at Huawei.

Huawei has secured more than 25 commercial contracts for 5G, the largest in the world, and has shipped more than 10,000 base stations for the fifth generation of mobile communications, Reuters reported on December 19.

The news outlet, quoting Huawei’s rotating chairman Ken Hu, said Huawei expects revenue to exceed $100 billion (Bt 3.2 trillion) this year, up 8.7 per cent from last year.

EVEN THOUGH it faces security allegations in several developed markets, Chinese technology major Huawei said that its global operations remain stable, with businesses in Germany running normally and its involvement in 5G construction by French telecom operators remaining active.

The comment came shortly after Huawei won a vote of faith in India, which had invited the Shenzhen-based company to conduct local 5G trials.

Analysts said the Indian government invitation and foreign companies’ willingness to use Huawei’s products highlight the trustworthiness of the company and provide a testament to Huawei’s technological prowess.

In an internal statement to employees on Wednesday, Huawei said that in addition to business in Germany and France, the company is also replying to Japanese operators’ 5G bid and actively participating in local 5G trials.

Though the New Zealand government has not approved a 5G proposal submitted by a local operator that is a Huawei partner, the regulatory process has not finished and local customers said they will continue to communicate with the government and hope that their cooperation with Huawei will remain unchanged, Huawei added.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that Huawei’s products and services are widely recognised.

No factual evidence has been given to support security allegations against Huawei, and some countries are politicising normal technological cooperation, Hua added.

The company said it has already secured 25 commercial contracts for 5G and shipped more than 10,000 base stations for the super-fast technology. It also has inked deals with more than 50 partners from around the world, demonstrating the confidence its clients have in the company.

The comments came after some foreign governments voiced security concerns over products made by the world’s largest maker of telecom equipment and the world’s second-largest smartphone vendor.

In the third quarter of 2018, Huawei had a 28 per cent share of the global telecom equipment market and accounted for 14.6 per cent of worldwide smartphone shipments, according to market research companies Dell’Oro Group and International Data Corp.

Wang Yanhui, secretary-general of the Mobile China Alliance, said Huawei is a global pioneer in research and development for 5G telecom equipment.

India wants to have a fast rollout of next-generation technology, so it called Huawei, Wang said. “Participating in 5G trials is an important step to build up trust.”

Bai Ming, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, said it is unreasonable for foreign countries to doubt the safety of Huawei’s products just because it is a Chinese company.

Xiang Ligang, founder of the telecom website cctime, said Huawei has established an image as a reliable technology provider in the past three decades. With countries around the world expected to deploy large-scale 5G networks in a year or two, there will be a huge demand for telecom equipment.

Research agency IHS Markit forecast that the global market for 5G telecom equipment will hit $11 billion (Bt358 billion) by 2022.

“Huawei’s cost-effective products and its ability to quickly respond to clients are the keys to keeping prices affordable and to ensuring a timely deployment of 5G around the world,” Xiang said.

Facebook defends data sharing after new report

FACEBOOK has defended its data sharing practices after a report revealed that certain partners of the social network had access to a range of personal information about users and their friends.

The New York Times reported that some 150 companies – including powerful partners Amazon, Microsoft, Netflix and Spotify – were given access to detailed |information about Facebook |users, including data about their friends.

The report marked yet another potential embarrassment for Facebook, which has been roiled by a series of scandals on data protection and privacy and has been scrutinised over the hijacking of user data in the 2016 US election campaign.

Konstantinos Papamiltiadis, Facebook’s head of developer platforms and programmes, said in a December 19 blog post that the Times report was about “integration partners” which enabled “social experiences – like seeing recommendations from their Facebook friends – on other popular apps and websites”.

Papamiltiadis added that “none of these partnerships or features gave companies access to information without people’s permission,” and maintained that the deals did not violate a 2012 privacy settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission.

According to documents seen by the Times, Facebook allowed Microsoft’s Bing search engine to see names of Facebook users’ friends without consent and gave Netflix and Spotify the ability to read private messages.

The report said Amazon was able to obtain user names and contact information through their friends, and Yahoo could view streams of friends’ posts.

While some of the deals date back as far as 2010, the Times said they remained active as late as 2017 and some were still in effect this year.

Papamiltiadis said however that “we’ve been public about these features and partnerships over the years because we wanted people to actually use them.

“They were discussed, reviewed, and scrutinised by a wide variety of journalists and privacy advocates,” he said.

But he said most of the features are now gone.

“Still, we recognise that we’ve needed tighter management over how partners and developers can access information,” he added.

Netflix said in a statement the feature was used to make the streaming service “more social” by allowing users to make recommendations to friends, but that it stopped using it in 2015.

“At no time did we access people’s private messages on Facebook or ask for the ability to do so,” Netflix said in an emailed statement.

Spotify offered a similar response, indicating the music service “cannot read users’ private Facebook inbox messages across any of our current integrations”.

The Canadian bank RBC, also cited in the New York Times, said the deal with Facebook “was limited to the development of a service that enabled clients to facilitate payment transactions to their Facebook friends,” and that it was discontinued in 2015.

Called up before lawmakers

Facebook has already been called before lawmakers in the US and elsewhere to defend its data policies since news broke this year on the misuse of personal data in 2016 by Cambridge Analytica, a British consultancy working on Donald Trump’s campaign.

A report prepared for US lawmakers revealed this week showed detailed information on how Russian entities manipulated Facebook and other social networks to support the Trump effort.

Senator Brian Schatz said the latest revelations highlight a need for tougher controls on how tech companies handle user data.

“It has never been more clear,” Schatz tweeted.

“We need a federal privacy law. They are never going to volunteer to do the right thing.”

THERE is a new girl group in the K-pop scene. Billing itself as the very first “e-sports girl group” in South Korea, Aqua hopes to incorporate gaming into the growing music scene.

At first glance, the six-piece group consisting of Hyeonju, Sua, Haesol, Seungji, Sihyeon and Hyerim looks like a typical K-pop idol group.

But with the novel concept of e-sports, the group is already gaining attention, including from gamers, since its debut single with the fitting title “Log In” was released in November.

Aqua has largely stuck to its concept so far, appearing at a gaming event organized by its agency and game developers Actoz Soft and Kakao Games earlier this month.

Furthermore, the group’s manager is a former professional gamer specializing in “StarCraft II,” whose current job entails overseeing the act’s dance and singing practices as well as game coaching.

In an interview clip uploaded on the group’s official YouTube channel, the bandmates were seen immersed in a first-person shooter game. Another video featured their visit to G-Star 2018, the country’s largest gaming event.

When the group was unveiled in early November, Actoz Soft CEO Guo Habin said professional gamers are now enjoying as much popularity as celebrities and that Aqua marks a “new business direction” that mixes gaming and entertainment.

In the same month, virtual K-pop group K/DA, created by Riot Games, released its debut single “Pop/Stars,” which featured the voices of (G)-IDLE’s bandmates Miyeon and Soyeon, indie-pop singer-songwriter Madison Beer and vocalist Jaira Burns.

The K-pop-tinged tune topped Billboard’s world digital song sales chart soon after its release, and the video for the song has been viewed over 120 million times as of last Thursday.

Both the gaming and K-pop industries contribute to the South Korean economy.

South Korea was the fourth-largest video games market this year, generating over 5.7 billion won (Bt185 million) in revenue, according to data from market intelligence Newzoo.

A recent study published by the Hyundai Research Institute this week estimated that K-pop sensation BTS is worth over $3.6 billion (Bt117 billion) per year to the country’s economy, as it boosts the brand image of South Korean products abroad.

E-COMMERCE and Internet behemoth Alibaba Group Holding Ltd aims to register 2 billion individual users around the world by 2036.

By the end of June, the group had 576 million active consumers on its two major retail marketplaces – Taobao, China’s largest mobile commerce destination, and Tmall, the country’s largest third-party platform for brands and retailers.

With its technology in core commerce, cloud computing, cross-border e-commerce and mobile payments, the group said it is committed to helping domestic and foreign consumers to buy products from all over the world, and to make mobile payments global.

Altogether, brands and consumers from 230 countries and regions participated in this year’s annual Singles Day shopping festival on November 11, which has become the world’s largest online shopping spree. Gross merchandise value hit 213.5 billion yuan (Bt1 trillion) during this year’s festival.

Alibaba, founded in 1999 by Jack Ma, now claims to be the world’s largest retail commerce business in terms of GMV.

The company launched with an international vision from the very beginning, said Zheng Guangming from the group’s public relations department.

One of the reasons that Alibaba gained its name is because it is pronounced the same by people speaking all kinds of different languages, he explained.

Tmall International, a cross-border e-commerce platform initiated five years ago, has imported products from 19,000 brands from 75 countries and regions for Chinese consumers, as a result of consumption upgrading trends, said Wei Chen, deputy general manager of Tmall International.

“A rising number of niche brands have entered the Chinese market through the channel, which is favoured by many overseas brands, as it would bring phenomenal growth if only 1 per cent of Chinese consumers like it,” he said.

Alipay, Alibaba’s financial arm, has established a presence in nine countries and regions in East Asia, Southeast Asia and South Asia, including Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia.

“For example, since its cooperation with an Indian partner in 2015, the number of mobile payment users in the country has reached 250 million now,” Zheng said.

Alibaba is also using its cloud computing technology to improve people’s quality of life.

Its intelligent system monitors and calculates passenger and automobile flow on roads in real-time. .

Startup to launch infrared device to measure bad body fat

Startup to launch infrared device to measure bad body fat

To find out if you’re carrying extra fat – whether you’re trying to lose weight or manage a serious health challenge like diabetes – there isn’t much you can do other than step on a scale.

Granted, there are ways to get more detailed information. You could calculate your body mass index (BMI) or use what health professionals call bioelectrical impedance analysis to analyse your body composition. But body composition analysers are bulky machines, usually found only in clinics and fitness centres, and the BMI is considered a rough measure.

To fill this void, South Korean startup Olive Healthcare Platform is developing a portable scanner that uses near-infrared spectroscopy to measure abdominal fat, a key marker associated with a variety of diseases and a problem area for dieters around the world.

Called Bello, the startup’s belly-fat scanner shines near-infrared light onto the abdomen and calculates how much light is absorbed versus how much is scattered. Based on this information, the device measures four biomarkers – deoxyhemoglobin, hemoglobin, lipids and moisture.

These measurements are analysed via a series of artificially intelligent algorithms to produce a measure of abdominal fat density, a more precise indicator of health status than BMI. The results are shown on a mobile app that connects to the device.

According to Olive Healthcare Platform CEO Han Sung-ho, Bello lets users conveniently track changes in their belly fat and provides segmented data that existing devices can’t.

“Fat maintenance is a central element of regulating metabolic or cardiovascular diseases. But there are no other ways to closely track changes in fat density than to look at a person’s weight,” Olive Healthcare Platform CEO Han Sung-ho said in a recent interview with The Korea Herald.

“However, weight is an insufficient marker in explaining changes in the body. Weight alone cannot track whether one is losing fat, moisture or muscle, or provide more detailed measurements that are crucial to patients for whom belly-fat density regulation is vital.”

To use the belly-fat scanner, you place it on the skin directly above and below the navel and push a button to start the scan. Your abdominal fat density reading will appear after just three seconds.

As of now, the Olive Healthcare Platform is working with Seoul National University Bundang Hospital to show similarities between the results that can be obtained from Bello and those from ultrasound machines and body-composition analysers such as Inbody.

The startup is also working to prove meaningful ties between subcutaneous fat, the kind Bello measures, and visceral fat. That’s the more problematic fat that wraps around the internal organs, Han said.

Who will purchase these devices? Initially, the Olive Healthcare Platform is eyeing people with health challenges that necessitate strict body-fat monitoring, such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity. But the company is also targeting everyday dieters who want to lose belly fat and easily track their progress.

In terms of commercialisation, the startup initially intends to position the scanner as a wellness device. Later, it will seek medical device designation from the US Food and Drug Administration.

Those efforts will begin next year, as the company plans to begin selling Bello directly to customers via Amazon in the third quarter of 2019. The device and app bundle will cost $249 (Bt8,100) and will require no additional service fees, the company said.

Until then, the startup plans to stir up market interest by running a crowdfunding project in May, while also seeking strategic partnerships with insurance companies, fitness professionals and companies pursuing employee wellness programs.

While Bello is its central focus, the startup is simultaneously developing a medical device that looks at the same four biomarkers to detect risk factors for breast cancer.

This device monitors changes in angiogenesis – the growth of new blood vessels, a process that supports tumour growth and may be a precursor to breast cancer. The startup expects its device to become a cheaper yet equally effective alternative to existing tools used in breast cancer diagnostics, it said.

Looking ahead, Han said, the ultimate vision for the Olive Healthcare Platform is to build up a rich pool of big data that can be used to help people improve their health-maintenance routines.

“The next generation of digital health care is all about providing reliable data on a health marker and to encourage people to adopt healthier habits and routines. In this respect, we hope to become a leading company (in our segment) on a global scale,” said the CEO.

Bello was formed in March 2016 under Han, a PhD biophysicist who worked in the health care division of LG Electronics for five years, developing visual-imaging techniques to alleviate rheumatoid arthritis.

When LG Electronics announced plans to pull out of the medical diagnosis business, Han left the tech company and founded the Olive Healthcare Platform because he wanted to be part of the world’s fast-growing digital health care market.

So far, the company has received 1 billion won (Bt28.8 million) in seed funding and 3.5 billion won in Series A funding from venture-capital investors, including Korea Investment Partners and Partners Investment.

The startup is now seeking around 12 billion won in Series B funding with the goal of kicking off its business globally. With more business milestones ahead, its goal is to pursue an initial public offering by 2021.

Hong Kong – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Chow Yun-fat may be a heavyweight from the golden era of Hong Kong cinema but the famously frugal actor has vowed to donate his vast wealth to charity after he dies.

Also known to western audiences for films such as Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and gangster classic A Better Tomorrow, Chow has endeared himself to fans in recent years with a modest lifestyle.

Multimillionaire Chow, 63, joined Forbes’ list of highest paid actors in the world for the first time in 2015, sharing 24th place with Russell Crowe.

Yet in Hong Kong – a city with no shortage of flashy socialites and stars – he can be spotted taking public transport and lining up for tickets to watch his own movie.

”This money isn’t something you possess forever. When you’re gone one day, you have to leave it to others to use it,” he told South Korea’s Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation in an interview aired last week.

”You can’t bring the money in your bank account with you after you die,” he said, adding his wife “strongly supports” his decision.

Hong Kong’s wealth gap was at its widest last year for nearly half a century, fuelling discontent as the former British colony marked two decades under Chinese rule.

Sky-high prices and the cost of living outstrip many ordinary residents’ salaries, with apartments becoming increasingly cramped and generations of families forced to share.

Meanwhile, the city’s mega-rich continue their display of extreme wealth and pursuit of status symbols.

Chow, affectionately nicknamed “Brother Fat” in Hong Kong, has won praise for taking an opposite tack.

Local media give wildly varied estimates of his wealth but say he is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Chow has said he has no idea how much he is worth.

His wife Jasmine Tan has previously described how her husband often eats at street stalls and only gave up his beloved Nokia flip-phone when it died after years of use.

Dozens of billionaire business figures have signed up to “The Giving Pledge” started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet encouraging the world’s wealthiest to donate their fortunes.

But Hollywood and Asian acting stars are noticeably absent from the list.

In his interview with MBC Chow, a native of Lamma Island, which was once a traditional fishing village, also discussed the joys of a simple meal – a favourite is savoury Chinese turnips accompanied with rice.

”I am happy if there’s food to eat, because we were quite poor then. I’ll be very happy eating sweet potatoes and vegetables, and even happier if I have chicken and meat during the new year,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: An AirAsia employee has been called in by the police for posting a video on social media lamenting the poor hygiene standards at KLIA2.

AirAsia head of communications Mohd Aziz Laikar posted a video on Twitter Monday (Dec 24) showing a rubbish bin filled with maggots at KLIA2, questioning a “fancy statement” by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) boasting its performance in airport management for the month of October.

“@MY_Airports today issued a fancy statement saying KLIA & #klia2 had exceeded the service quality targets of #Mavcom’s Quality of Service (QoS) framework.

“Here is a video of termites at a rubbish can located at gate p6 this morning while there was a departure to Perth,” Aziz wrote, later clarifying that they were maggots and not termites.

“The police said the words that I used hurt the image of MAHB. That’s the word used. The report is based on my alleged intention to hurt MAHB’s image.

“These are all the facts available, and I can only give more information once I meet the police on Wednesday with AirAsia’s lawyers. I have informed the top management of the report and they have expressed solidarity with me,” Aziz told the MalayMail.

AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes condemned the issue, labelling it “ridiculous and sad”.

“It isn’t the first time we’ve been reported for speaking the truth, they have always resorted to a culture of bullying and threatening and we do not condone to that.

“If they are against being transparent, makes me wonder what else they are trying to hide They could’ve responded with a kind resolution when the report was made on the maggots but they chose to be defensive and offensive,” Fernandes said on his Facebook page.

He added that AirAsia “will not back down” any more and that the truth always prevails.

The airline has had a contentious relationship with MAHB over the years.

AirAsia has complained repeatedly about what is claims is poor airport maintenance by MAHB.

More recently, the budget airline took issue with MAHB increasing the passenger service charge (PSC) from RM50 to RM73, stating that the fee should not be the same for both KLIA and the low-cost terminal of KLIA2.

MAHB issued legal letters to both AirAsia and its long-haul unit, AirAsia X Bhd (AAX), in October to demand payment of outstanding PSC for international departures since July 1, according to a report from The Edge.

AirAsia has accrued around RM9.4mil in unpaid PSC while AAX was hit with a lawsuit seeking RM26.72mil for similar arrears.

MANILA, Philippines — “Aquaman” star Jason Momoa has emerged from the sea and crashed a wedding in Hawaii.

While on a holiday trip with friends, Momoa made a spontaneous appearance in a couple’s wedding photo shoot at the beachside.

“We were taking our wedding photos after the ceremony out on the rocks and Jason Momoa and some of his family and some friends just all walked out on the beach,” the bride Katie Meyers said as quoted by an E! News report last Friday.

“They were shouting congratulations to us and they were super calm and super chill,” she added.

According to the couple’s wedding coordinator Carina Cooper, the newlyweds’ photographer asked Momoa to photobomb the pair’s wedding photos and the “Aquaman” actor was more than willing to partake in their special day.

Screengrab from @honor_your_heart on Instagram

“He happily agreed to photobomb them! There just happened to be a kid on the beach nearby with that trident (in the pic) and Jason asked to borrow it. So he took the trident and went behind the couple in their picture and pretended to be a sasquatch,” Cooper said as quoted by the same report.

In an Instagram post, Cooper shared moments from the impromptu wedding photoshoot with Momoa captioned: “Best wedding crasher ever! Thanks for being so awesome!”

The Jakarta governor has announced that the capital will be paying for the medical and funeral costs of Jakartans who were killed in the Sunda Strait tsunami that hit the Anyer coast in Banten province on Saturday evening.

“The Jakarta administration will take care of the hospital bills of victims [who are Jakarta residents],” Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan announced on Sunday at city-owned Tarakan hospital in Cideng, Central Jakarta, as quoted by kompas.com.

He urged the victims’ families not to worry about the costs.

By Sunday, 56 Jakartans were reported among the hundreds of tsunami victims, 54 of whom are employees of the Tarakan hospital cooperative.

“There are currently 11 injured victims undergoing treatment, 18 victims are on the way to the hospital and 10 fatal victims. Five bodies have already been returned to their families; the five other bodies are still at the hospital. We are still searching for other victims,” said Anies.

Anies added that the city administration had sent ambulances to the disaster areas and was awaiting for further requests for aid and assistance. A team of Jakarta DIsaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) personnel and firefighters from the Jakarta Fire Department (Damkar) had been sent to assist in recovery efforts, he said.
