Four new subspecies of Covid-19’s Delta variant have been found in samples analysed by Ramathibodi Hospital, health officials reported on Tuesday.
The new subspecies were found among more than 2,000 new cases sampled randomly from around the country, said Department of Medical Sciences chief Dr Supakit Sirilak.
The AY.4 (B.1.617.2.4) subspecies was found in Pathum Thani (4 cases), Buri Ram (1 case), Kamphaeng Phet (1 case), Chiang Mai (1 case), Samut Prakan (1 case), and Chonburi (1 case).
The AY.6 (B.1.617.2.6) subspecies was found in Bangkok (1 case).
The AY.10 (B.1.617.2.10) subspecies was found in Bangkok (1 case).
And the AY.12 (B.1.617.2.15) subspecies was found in Bangkok’s Phaya Thai district (1 case) and Surat Thani (2 cases).
All four subspecies have been recorded previously in other countries, including Britain, Spain, Denmark and the United States.
Dr Wasun Chantratita, head of Mahidol University’s Centre for Medical Genomics, said the new subspecies underlined the need for prevention via disease controls and vaccination.
Thailand logged 17,165 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, the fewest since July 30, with a death toll of 226.

Dr Vijj Kasemsup, a community-based health programme expert at Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, said 10 million AstraZeneca doses were required in both September and October to prevent deaths in vulnerable elderly, pregnant and chronically ill people. He warned of a crisis if the uncertainty over vaccine supplies continued through the next two months.
Thailand’s vaccination rollout has been hit by shortages after AstraZeneca said it could only deliver 5-6 million doses per month. The government is reportedly considering whether to block exports from Siam Bioscence, the local company tasked with manufacturing AstraZeneca for the region.
Academics say current data indicates infections will fall among all groups next month.
Meanwhile, millions of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine doses are due for delivery at the end of September, with another 5 million set to arrive in October, and 30 million in total by the end of this year. This should relieve pressure on the government, Dr Vijj said, adding that getting early vaccination is essential to saving Thai people’s lives.
He also urged the government to use its authority to limit exports of AstraZeneca vaccine produced by Siam Bioscience. Vijj hoped AstraZeneca would agree to cap exports from Thailand, saying the company had received benefits from the Thai government.

A cocktail of Sinovac and AstraZeneca vaccine doses offers higher immunity against Covid-19 than being inoculated by just one of those two vaccines, the Department of Disease Control said on Friday.
The department cited a study conducted by Chulalongkorn University’s Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology and the Department of Medical Services’ Institute of Medical Research & Technology Assessment on three groups of Thai volunteers.

Cross-vaccination with Sinovac and then AstraZeneca can offer over three times more immunity than two AstraZeneca doses, according to results of a Thai study released on Thursday.
The results from a Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) study on vaccinated front-line medics deliver a big shot in the arm for Thailand’s cross-vaccination programme.
The study measured the immunity of 125 volunteers – front-line medics aged 18-60 (61 males and 64 females) – after receiving a dose of Sinovac then a dose of AstraZeneca, said DMS chief Dr Supakit Sirilak.
Their levels of immunity were then compared with immunity levels of people who received other combinations of the two vaccines, as measured by AU (Arbitrary Units).
Two Sinovac doses boosted immunity to around 117 AU while two AstraZeneca boosted it to 207. However, with the Sinovac-AstraZeneca cocktail, immunity soared to an average of 716.
Meanwhile, two shots of Sinovac followed by an AstraZeneca booster saw recipients’ immunity surge to 1700.
Data for the study came from the Bangkok metropolitan area, while the volunteers work at Siriraj Hospital. Data on immunity generated by Pfizer booster shots will be evaluated in one month, Supakit added.
The study also measured specific immunity against the Delta variant, which accounts for more than 90 per cent of new cases in Thailand. Using the Plaque Reduction Neutralisation Test , researchers found that two doses of Sinovac achieved a score of 24, which exceeds the standard (10) and is considered valid for eliminating the virus in vitro. Two injections of AstraZeneca were found to have an average of 76. This rose to 78 for cross-vaccination with Sinovac followed by AstraZeneca three weeks apart, which matched or exceeded the score for two doses of AstraZeneca. Medics double-jabbed with Sinovac followed by an AstraZeneca booster showed a score of 271, which is enough to combat Delta infection, said Dr Supakit.
He said side effects from the AstraZeneca booster matched those from two doses of AstraZeneca, with slight fever (66%), headache (33%) and fatigue (28%).
The study also included a small group of 14 people injected with two Sinovac doses followed by a Sinopharm booster. This cocktail generated only 2.5 times more immunity than two Sinovac doses.

Health agency defends purchase of another 12m Sinovac doses
A Thai public health agency on Tuesday issued data to back the decision to purchase another 12 million doses of Sinovac, despite public criticism of Thailand’s reliance on the Chinese vaccine.
The Department of Disease Control and Emergency Health Hazards reported on Tuesday that Sinovac remained Thailand’s top choice with 11,399,453 doses administered so far, ahead of AstraZeneca (10,255,294 doses), Sinofarm (2,036,818) and Pfizer (409,066).
A total of 508,498 doses were administered on Monday (August 16), bringing the number of people jabbed at least once to just over 24 million (24,100631), department director Dr Chawetsan Namwat said.
Of these, 18,370,997 have had their first jab, 5,228,157 have been double-jabbed, and 501,477 have had three doses.
Dr Chawetsan added that a study of front-line health workers showed two shots of Sinovac offered 72 per cent protection against Covid-19 infection and 98 per cent protection against death. The study was conducted from May to July on 3,906 medical personnel working with Covid patients.
Meanwhile, data showed that cross-vaccination with Sinovac followed by AstraZeneca vaccine generated high and rapid stimulation of immunity since jabs could be given 3-4 weeks apart instead of waiting 3 months, he said.
All vaccines used in Thailand had passed World Health Organisation (WHO) standards on prevention of fatalities and reduction of severe illness, Chawetsan said.
“Currently, there are plans to purchase an additional 12 million doses [of Sinovac], which will be crossed with AstraZeneca to generate wide immunity stimulation among the population.”
The government is facing growing public criticism of its reliance on Sinovac vaccine, which costs more than twice as much as locally made AstraZeneca but barely reaches the 50 per cent efficacy threshold set by the WHO.
ChulaCov19 generates similar level of immunity as Pfizer, say researchers
Thailand’s home-grown ChulaCov19 vaccine generates immunity on par with the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine and protects against four major variants of Covid-19, its lead developer said on Monday.
Dr Kiat Ruxrungtham, founder of Chula Vaccine Research Centre, revealed preliminary results of phase 1 human trials of ChulaCov19 – Southeast Asia’s first mRNA vaccine – during a press conference via Chulalongkorn Hospital’s Facebook page.
A group of 36 volunteers aged 18-55 were given two shots of the vaccine and experienced no serious side effects after seven days. Some developed mild or moderate side effects which improved within 1-3 days.
ChulaCov19 stimulated similar levels of antibody-based immunity as other mRNA vaccines such as Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna, while generating much higher protection against the original strain of Covid-19, said Dr Kiat. This high antibody response is also capable of inhibiting transmission of all four strains: Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta. ChulaCov19 also stimulates T-cell immunity, which helps to eliminate and control the virus in the cells of infected people.
Phase 2 trials on volunteers will begin around August 25.
Dr Kiat expects ChulaCov19 to be available by April 2022. Researchers will transfer the technology to Bionet Asia for immediate mass production.
ChulaCov19 vaccine can be stored at refrigerated temperatures of 2-8°C for 3 months and room temperature (25°C) for 2 weeks.
GPO’s inactivated vaccine enters 2nd human trial after strong results
The Covid-19 vaccine jointly developed by the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) and Mahidol University has begun phase 2 human trials after generating a strong immune response in phase 1, GPO chief Dr Witoon Danwiboon said on Monday.
The HXP-GPOVac inactivated vaccine was tested on 210 volunteers in phase 1 and produced only mild side effects such as temporary headaches and muscle ache.
It generated strong immunity against the original Wuhan strain of Covid-19 and lower immunity
against the Alpha, Delta, Gamma and Beta variants of the virus, Dr Witoon reported.
The HXP-GPOVac vaccine project is a collaboration with the US-based PATH global health organisation. The project has modified the Newcastle avian virus by adding a spike protein to generate an immune response against coronavirus. The resulting vaccine is grown in chicken eggs.

Dr Witoon said the second human trial will run until November when researchers will apply to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct a third trial. He expects production of the first 20-30 million doses to begin at the GPO plant in Saraburi by the middle of next year after the vaccine is registered with the FDA.
