Dow and Thong Guan mark new milestone in stretch cling film production
Sep 27. 2020
By The Nation
Chemicals giant Dow and Thong Guan have introduced sustainable stretch cling films made with renewable feedstock in the Asia Pacific.
The stretch cling films are produced using bio-based resins, achieving high performance while reducing carbon footprint, the company said.
The world’s leading stretch cling film producers said that the bio-based polyethylene (bio-PE) marked a milestone in the region’s commercialisation of a plastics offering made from renewable feedstock, enabling industry providers to produce high-performance plastics while reducing carbon footprint.
In a joint effort, Thong Guan will be using Dow’s bio-based resin derived from renewable feedstock. The feedstock comes from tall oil, a residue of paper production, from sustainably managed forests. Unlike other alternative renewable feedstocks, it does not compete with the human food chain, and no extra land is required for its production, the companies said.
Nano Bio, the new range of stretch cling films by Thong Guan, will be made using Dow’s linear low-density polyethylene.
“To achieve our new sustainability target of protecting the climate, Dow is committed to implementing and advancing technologies to manufacture products using fewer resources, thereby helping our customers to reduce their carbon footprint. Introducing Dow’s first bio-based polyethylene in Asia Pacific based on renewable feedstock is an important step in this direction,” said Bambang Candra, Asia Pacific commercial vice president of Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics.
“In addition, as a part of the new sustainability targets, Dow is also committed to stopping the leakage of plastic waste into the environment by enabling 1 million metric tonnes of plastic to be collected, reused or recycled by 2030 and closing the circular economy loop by having 100 per cent of its products sold into packaging applications be reusable or recyclable by 2035.”
“This is a landmark moment for Dow. Introducing bio-based resins for the first time in Asia Pacific, our fastest-growing market, is key in advancing a circular economy. We are proud to embark on this journey with our long-term partner, Thong Guan, and further both our sustainability offerings in order to meet our environmental goals,” said Eunice Ch’ng, senior marketing manager, Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics, Asia Pacific.
“We are committed to preserving the environment and resources for the future world. The continuous collaboration with Dow illustrates our dedication to offering renewable products and promoting sustainability,” said Ang Poon Chuan, managing director, Thong Guan Industries. “With Dow’s bio-based resins, our Nano Bio reduces the use of plastics while maintaining the same high-performance, thus meeting our customers’ business and sustainability needs.”

Dtac Business offers new solutions for corporate clients
Sep 25. 2020
By The Nation
Dtac Business, a Total Access Communications (Dtac) unit created to provide solutions to corporate customers, is highlighting three new offerings to help Thai businesses leapfrog into a digital future.
• Mobility solution: A simple package with zero hidden fees that offers unlimited free calls to all networks and “worry free” SIMs that automatically upgrade data packages. This means existing clients are guaranteed plans that are equally attractive as those offered to new customers. The service also covers device care and virtual PBX for a more efficient management of calls and data usage to keep costs low.
• IoT solution: This package is integrated with Dtac’s own technology, including a managed IoT cloud platform and 4G IoT SIM connectivity. The solution offered includes machine to machine (M2M) links with SIMs supporting communications between devices such as ATMs, vehicles and telematics. Users will also be provided with consultancy services on IoT investment that is tailored to each industry.
• SmartConnect: A turnkey cloud solution that enables remote work, boosts collaboration and heightens security. Dtac Business is adopting multiple cloud services, building on the provider’s strength in connectivity and mobility, as well as synergising with strategic partners in leading cloud services.
Dtac is also offering customisation of multi-cloud services to offer innovative solutions. Its cloud solutions are suitable for both large corporations and SMEs, making operations more agile and efficient.
Dtac Business has also launched an e-care and e-store to cater to changing customer behaviour, where consumers prefer to manage their call and data plans themselves. Dtac has also launched a new business call centre to cater to corporate clients.
Rajiv Bawa, Dtac’s chief executive officer, said: “Business is always tough, but 2020 is particularly disruptive. Making the need for simple, worry-free solutions all the more pressing in Thai companies, particularly SMEs. They need data and call packages that are affordable and without extra charges. They need simple IT tools that can be implemented without an IT team, and that can help make their data both more secure and more easily accessible remotely. And finally, all customers expect improved digital channels. That pressure is both on our customers and on us, which is why we’ve launched a new e-care platform.
“Much of the pressure to digitalise is coming one or two years earlier than anticipated. We want to make the digital future an opportunity rather than a threat for our clients. We can help them embrace digital solutions internally but also in their communication with their customers, allowing them to grow their business with touch-free experiences adapted to the new normal,” he said.
The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) has won this year’s Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Award (AREA) for “Investment in People”, which reflects its policies and commitment in promoting employees health and safety in the workplace, MEA governor Keerapat Jiamset said.
“MEA’s latest project, ‘Lively Workplace, Better service’, which focuses on improving the working environment for MEA technicians responsible for fixing electrical malfunctions in Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan, is the reason we won this award,” he said.
“One of our SDGs [sustainable development goals] is to provide high quality service to customers while maintaining satisfactory atmosphere at work to boost staff morale,” he added. “Under this project, MEA organised a contest between 18 branch offices to keep the quarters of on-call technicians in good condition to promote health and safety as well as increase work performance.”
Keerapat added that the contest focuses on employing Japan’s 5S principle: seiri (cleaning up), seiton (organising), seiso (cleaning), seiketsu (standardising) and shitsuke (training and discipline).
“The contest was judged by MEA executives and experts from the Thailand-Japan Technology Promotion Association,” he added.
The Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards for this year were organised by Enterprise Asia via an online forum. This is the 11th year this competition has been held to promote sustainable development leadership among entrepreneurs in Asia.
The awards are offered in seven categories: Green Leadership, Investment in People, Health Promotion, Social Empowerment, Corporate Governance, Circular Economy Leadership and Responsible Business Leadership.

Johnson & Johnson set to test its Covid-19 vaccine on 60,000 adult volunteers
Sep 24. 2020
By The Nation
Johnson & Johnson on Wednesday (September 23) announced the launch of a large-scale, multi-country Phase 3 trial for its Covid-19 vaccine.
The third phase follows positive results from its first and second phase trials, which demonstrated that the safety profile and immunogenicity after a single vaccine were supportive of further development.
The results have been submitted to medRxiv and are due to be published online soon.
Up to 60,000 volunteers across three continents will be enrolled to study the safety and efficacy of a single vaccine dose versus placebo in preventing Covid-19. The vaccine is being developed by Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceutica.
Johnson & Johnson said it will scale up its manufacturing capacity to provide one billion doses of the vaccine each year. Its aim is to provide an affordable vaccine for emergency use and expects the first batch to be available for authorisation in early 2021 if tests prove it to be safe and effective.
“As Covid-19 continues to impact the lives of people worldwide, our goal remains the same – leveraging the global reach and scientific innovation of our company to help bring an end to this pandemic,” said Alex Gorsky, chairman and chief executive officer of Johnson & Johnson. “We are committed to clinical trial transparency and to sharing information related to our study, including details of our study protocol.”
“We remain focused on developing an urgently needed, safe and effective Covid-19 vaccine for people around the world,” said Paul Stoffels, MD, vice chair of the executive committee and chief scientific officer for Johnson & Johnson. “We value the collaboration and support from our scientific partners and global health authorities as our team of experts work tirelessly on the development of the vaccine and scaling up our production capacity with a goal to deliver a vaccine for emergency use authorisation in early 2021.”
The vaccine is being developed using the company’s AdVac technology, which was also used to develop and manufacture the European Union-approved Ebola vaccine as well as its Zika, RSV and HIV vaccine candidates. The AdVac platform has been used to vaccinate more than 100,000 people to date.
With the AdVac technology, the vaccine, if successful, should remain stable for two years at -20 degrees Celsius and at least three months at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. This makes the vaccine compatible with standard vaccine distribution channels and would not require new infrastructure to get it to the people who need it.
Phase 3 trial
The Phase 3 study is a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a single vaccine dose versus placebo in up to 60,000 adults above the age of 18, including a significant representation of those above 60. The trial will aim to enrol participants in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, South Africa and the United States.
In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the vaccine, countries and clinical trial sites that have a high incidence of Covid-19 infections and the ability to achieve rapid initiation will be activated.
The company will also collaborate with the UK on a separate Phase 3 clinical trial to explore a two-dose regimen of Janssen’s vaccine candidate.
Johnson & Johnson is also in talks with many governments and global organisations to meet its commitment to make the vaccine accessible globally once it proves to be safe and is approved.
JTS set to penetrate hyperscale data centre and cloud services market
Sep 24. 2020
Jasmine Telecom Systems (JTS) and South Korea’s KT Corporation have signed a strategic collaboration agreement in which JTS will enter the hyperscale data centre and cloud service market in a bid to attract global cloud service providers to Thailand.
JTS director and acting president Somboon Patcharasopak, right, with KT chief executive officer Hyeon-Mo Ku.
“The hyperscale data centre and cloud service business will be a foundation to add value to Jasmine Group’s network business,” said JTS director and acting president Somboon Patcharasopak. “This strategic partnership with KT will bring together global cloud service partners for further expansion of other services.”
KT will act as a strategic partner in business development and collaboration with global cloud service providers.
Somboon said JTS’s experience, starting with providing telecommunication services to corporate customers, including cloud infrastructure as a service, allows the understanding of rapid change in customers’ needs and realises the importance of data in today’s business environment.
Storing data in various formats, including text, images and videos, all of which are also constantly updated, requires large storage space and needs more efficient processing. There is also a risk of data loss or data being unusable in the case of a single point of storage, something the company’s cloud service and data management service will address.
Furthermore, collaborating with global cloud service providers will require the company to arrange a hyperscale-class data centre to support the expansion and storage space.
KT is currently the number one telecommunications operator in South Korea and has been an IDC specialist in that country for more than 10 years, while JTS is equipped with service providing experience in data centres from its affiliated companies, and infrastructure as a service, including international private leased circuits.
