By THE NATION

The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) on Monday (August 10) launched the survey and restoration project of Building 1 at MEA Wat Liab branch in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district together with officials from the Department of Fine Arts and Engineering Institute of Thailand with the aim to use it as the location for Thailand Electricity Museum.

“The head office of MEA Wat Liab branch is an old building aged over 100 years,” said Thepsakdi Thitaraksa, MEA deputy governor. “It was the location of the first power plant in Thailand owned by the Siam Electricity Ltd, who produced and distributed electricity, as well as sold electrical appliances and operated tram services in Bangkok.

The company was taken over by the government in 1950 and changed its named to Bangkok Electricity Authority, and then to Metropolitan Electricity Authority on August 1, 1958,” Thepsakdi added.

He revealed that the building was built in the reign of King Rama V and is among the first reinforced concrete buildings in Thailand. “The three-storey building features beautiful architecture of Thai-Western classic style that carries historical significance regarding the modernisation of the country,” he said. “The MEA is planning to restore it into Thailand Electricity Museum to provide knowledge on the history of electrical technology in Thailand to interested people as well as serve as a new landmark in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district.”

The MEA Wat Liab branch is also surrounded by historical landmarks and tourist attractions such as Phra Phuttayotfa Bridge, Wat Prayurawongsawat, Santa Cruz Church, the Temple of Dawn, the Praisaniyakarn (Thailand’s first postal office), and Chao Phraya Sky Park.

Krungsri Finnovate has unveiled its business strategy for the second half of 2020, with a goal of becoming the top start-up incubator and investor in the Asean region.

The Bank of Ayudhya’s start-up venture capital arm also announced its most recent investment – in property tech (proptech) firm ICON Framework.

“Krungsri Finnovate continues its focus on providing support to Thai start-ups while monitoring the Covid-19 impact on their ecosystem,” said Sam Tanskul, Krungsri Finnovate managing director.

“Krungsri Finnovate has redefined its business plan to focus on creating alliances as well as investing in start-ups with potential growth and technologies that will respond to the market post-Covid-19, which include e-logistics, online payment, software as a service (SaaS), food delivery, etc.”

Krungsri Finnovate said its strategy aligns with four investment themes:

1. Strategic Investment

4. Fund of Funds

The firm said it will continue seeking investment opportunities both domestically and in Southeast Asia, China, Europe, and other countries with advanced innovation, including Israel.

“Krungsri Finnovate is developing start-ups’ ecosystem and promoting start-ups’ growth both in terms of investment and building incubation and escalation platforms. Dow Unveils Future of Sustainable Packaging: INNATE™ TF Polyethylene Resins for Tenter Frame Biaxial Orientation

Aug 08. 2020

By The Nation

Answering industry demand for high performance, consumer convenience, and recyclability, Dow is excited to announce an innovative and revolutionary brand extension to the family of INNATE™ Precision Packaging Resins. INNATE™ TF Polyethylene Resins for Tenter Frame Biaxial Orientation are bringing commercial viability to a long-desired packaging goal: tenter frame biaxially oriented polyethene (TF-BOPE) films.

Compared to traditional polyethene (PE) films, the TF-BOPE film made with INNATE™ TF Polyethylene Resins for Tenter Frame Biaxial Orientation has higher mechanical properties and material rigidity, better optical and printing performance, and offers considerable sustainability advantages, including the potential for all-PE structures for recyclability.

Many valuable benefits

TF-BOPE films made using INNATE™ TF resins demonstrate many impressive properties prized across the value chain:

• Excellent optical properties such as transparency and glossiness

• up to 80% less haze compared to traditional PE films

• twice the impact strength and tensile modulus

• three times the puncture resistance and tensile strength of traditional blown PE films

• excellent flex crack resistance, even under low temperature

• good tearability for convenience-in-use

A more sustainable packaging solution

INNATE™ TF Polyethylene Resins for Tenter Frame Biaxial Orientation offer distinctive physical properties which can enable material substitution, film layer elimination, and/or downgauging, to reduce overall packaging materials.

The TF-BOPE film can be used directly as the printed layer of the packaging, allowing a combination of PE functional layers to achieve an all-PE structure, making it more convenient for recycling and increasing the sustainability quotient.

Applications are already on the shelf

Collaborating with a variety of value chain members, such as Guangdong Decro Film New Materials Co Ltd, CaiHua, NanCheng and KAIDA Group, commercial applications – including all-PE pillow pouches, recyclable SUP packaging, and liquid product SUPs – are now in the marketplace. Applications include rice bags, pet food bags, heavy-duty shipping sacks, liquid detergent pouches, and others. Case studies regarding some of these applications are available for review at www.dow.com/InnateTF.

More is to come through ongoing collaboration. Asia Pacific marketing director for Food & Specialty Packaging, Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics, Kodak Xiao, stated: “As one of the leading materials solutions providers to the packaging industry, Dow hopes to collaborate with key stakeholders across the value chain to promote innovative and sustainable packaging solutions and promote the healthy and dynamic development of the industry. With its downgauging and recyclability potential, INNATE™ TF resins already offer answers to the plastic waste issue, and we believe more advantages can be found together.”

These successes come after more than a decade of efforts. According to Wu Chang, Asia Pacific director for Technical Services and Development (TS&D), Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics: “Our Asia-Pacific regional R&D team engaged in intensive research into the future trends of the packaging market. This revolutionary product breaks through the limits of traditional PE products and showcases Dow’s futuristic and cutting-edge insights, as well as our strong R&D capacity.”

Since the initial release in 2017, Dow’s TF-BOPE resins have earned three prestigious awards: an Edison Awards Gold, an R&D 100 Award, and the Ringier Technology Innovation Award.

MEA’s solar-energy project in Bangkok community proves successful

Aug 06. 2020

By THE NATION

Officials from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) visited the Koiruttukwa community in Bangkok’s Nong Chok district to follow up on a solar-energy project the agency had initiated in 2016.

The MEA had installed solar panels on the roofs of 189 houses in the community and installed solar-powered streetlights to promote the use of clean energy. Electricity generated from solar panels is also used to power the catfish farming business along the Lam Sai canal that runs through the community.

“This project has helped reduce residents’ power bills by around Bt12,000 per year and has boosted the profit from selling catfish by around Bt7,000 per year,” one of the residents said.

An MEA survey showed that the Koiruttukwa community used 40 per cent less power from the main grid per year, which works out to a reduction of more than 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

MEA is also using the solar rooftops, which have a capacity of 5.4 kilowatts, as a case study for nearby communities who may be interested. Students from other provinces have also been invited to study the installation of solar panels as well as other sufficiency economy models implemented in the Koiruttukwa community.

The agency is also providing courses for people interested in pursuing a career in the electrical field or those who want to use their professional skills to maintain infrastructure in their community.

Teibto tiptoes to the top

The Thai solution provider is upbeat about growth after winning two top awards from Oracle NetSuite

The only company in Asean to be recognised with two top awards from Oracle NetSuite, Thai solution provider, Teibto Co., Ltd. (https://teibto.com)  is predicting 40-per-cent growth this year, its CEO says.

Miss Aphissada Demikul, Chief Executive Officer of Teibto, says that the Covid-19 epidemic has had no impact on her company’s performance as Teibto focuses on providing cloud-based solutions to firms.

Buoyed by the latest top award from Oracle NetSuite, Aphissada is confident her company will achieve more than 40-per-cent growth due in part to the expansion of its market in Vietnam as well as to its increased investment in human resources and public relations.

The company, whose name in Thai means growth, was recognised this year with the Top Value Partner Award (ASEAN) FY20 by Oracle NetSuite for being the solution provider in ASEAN to have generated the biggest sales of Oracle NetSuite software in the region.

“We are the only solution provider in ASEAN to win this award. It’s really difficult to achieve this recognition because meeting the criteria is hard and the winner is also required to manage its sales to meet the sales target,” Aphissada says, adding that Teibto has been in the solution provider market for 12 years.

Teibto is the first Thai solution provider to sell Oracle NetSuite and provide the service of Best First World Class Cloud ERP to businesses and companies.

The cloud services and solutions from Teibto meet the demands of businesses in Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and e-Commerce services. It is the first web-based application to offer everything in a single, integrated and powerful solution. Additionally, Oracle NetSuite enables you to make better, faster decisions through real-time business intelligence.

Services from Teibto can meet the needs of new-generation businessmen because they are cloud-based, allowing their businesses to expand fast, conveniently and efficiently, the CEO explains.

Teibto also received the Five Star Award 2020 from Oracle NetSuite early this year.

“We have won this award for two consecutive years and we are the only firm in Southeast Asia to have received it. These two awards are evidence that Teibto provides excellent management and services to our clients,” the CEO says.

Aphissada further explains that Teibto’s success can also be attributed to the firm’s successful implementation of solutions and after-sale services, which leverage clients’ confidence in the company.

While other companies have been affected by the Covid-19 crisis, the pandemic and the measures taken to contain it have had little impact on Teibto because the solution provider focuses on online services, allowing it to service its clients from anywhere.

And after the Covid-19 situation improves, Teibto will expand its services in Vietnam, where it started making inroads two years ago, Aphissada says.

“We have had good response in Vietnam and our business is growing there. The Vietnamese market has good prospects so many Thai businesses would like to invest there. They will be our targets,” Aphissada concludes.

Huawei launches ICT training to build talent ecosystem in Asia

Aug 05. 2020 Michael Macdonald, chief digital officer and executive consultant of Huawei Asia PacificMichael Macdonald, chief digital officer and executive consultant of Huawei Asia Pacific

By The Nation

Huawei Technologies has unveiled a new training programme to develop an ICT talent ecosystem it says will support sustainable digital transformation in Asia.

Hosted online yesterday, the Huawei Asia Pacific ICT Talent Forum 2020 was joined by over 2,000 participants, including industry experts and IT professors who discussed the need for a highly skilled ICT workforce to solve the region’s skills shortage.

The Huawei Asia Pacific ICT Certification Programme, announced at the event, is open to students and ICT practitioners who have joined or plan to join the Huawei Asia Pacific ICT Academy.

The programme runs from August 4 to November 30, 2020. Participants who pass the exams in the shortest time will be awarded on a first come, first served basis.

With the emergence of cloud computing, big data, the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, basic IT skills will no longer suffice, said Michael Macdonald, chief digital officer and executive consultant of Huawei Asia Pacific.

“As enterprises redefine their job requirements, this new ICT landscape will leave us with an estimated shortage of about 5 million professionals. We aim to globally develop 2 million ICT professionals over the next five years to match high demand for skilled workers. In 2020, we are going to build more than 200 Huawei ICT Academies and train 10,000 ICT certification in Asia Pacific region,” Macdonald announced.

Huawei said its talent ecosystem consists of three initiatives: the Huawei Certification, the Huawei Academy and the Huawei ICT Competition.

The Huawei Certification covers 100 certification exams and 22 technical fields, and has certified more than 260,000 ICT students and employees, including 19,000 in Asia Pacific, said the firm.

Launched in 2013, the Huawei ICT Academy has collaborated with 900 higher education institutions to offer ICT courses and training for over 45,000 students each year, with 103 ICT Academies in the Asia Pacific region.

Meanwhile the Huawei Competition “allows the students to get recognised and secure valuable employment at leading enterprises”, said Macdonald.

In Thailand, the ICT market is growing rapidly. The company announced it has been working with a dozen leading universities to establish the Huawei Academy in the country. Thailand’s first Huawei ICT Competition was held in 2018, attracting over 2,000 students from across the country. The three national winners were given the opportunity to represent the country at the Global Final in Shenzhen, China.

BCPG Pcl, a leader in the renewable energy business in Thailand and the Asia-Pacific region, has signed an agreement with Eternity Power Pcl for the acquisition of 99.99 per cent shares in RPV Energy Co Ltd, an operator of four solar power plants in Thailand, with a total production capacity of 20 megawatts.

The four solar power plants, which have already started commercial operations, consist of a 5MW solar power project in Lopburi province, a 5MW solar power project in Prachin Buri province, and two solar power projects with a total production capacity of 10MW in Kanchanaburi province.

The revenue recognition for all projects is expected to be within this quarter.

“The acquisition is in line with BCPG’s five-year plan, which aims to expand into various types of renewable energy businesses and develop the existing green energy projects to achieve the company’s business performance goal,” BCPG president Bundit Sapianchai said.
