Bangkok gems and jewellery fair goes online this year

Thailand’s largest gems and jewellery trade fair will be held virtually this year in line with restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The “BGJFF Virtual Trade Fair (66th Special Edition)” will run from June 22 and 24 via www.BGJF-VTF.com.

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) said the response has been very positive, so far.

Nantapong Chiralerspong, deputy director-general of DITP, said: “This online event aims to create new opportunities in global trade for gems and jewellery entrepreneurs and help them ‘refill-reform-refine’ in these challenging times through marketing innovations in the new normal. This is part of the 14 roadmaps created by Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit.”

Thailand’s gems and jewellery exports dropped 39.89 per cent in 2020 due to the pandemic, though the country is still the world’s top exporter of silver jewellery and third in the gemstone category after the United States and Hong Kong.

Nantapong said the situation is expected to improve this year.

“We have seen good signs for exports this year, thanks to a recovering economic situation and increased consumer confidence in targeted markets. Since the end of 2020, many economies have started recovering. As for Thailand, orders have been rising, especially from online customers in the US and the UK.

“In the first quarter of 2021, Thailand’s gems and jewellery exports were valued at 53.76 billion baht, a 1.1 per cent increase and are expected to grow at least 5 per cent by the end of the year.”

He added that the online fair is available to everyone free of charge and expects results to turn out as planned.

“The BGJF platform is designed to make visitors feel as if they were in a real trade fair. It will feature digital showcases of more than 600 companies from across the world along with the online business matching services that can be booked in advance directly or through trade commissioners around the world. This event is expected to have at least 450 online business matchings and 500 million baht in revenue. To help support entrepreneurs whose businesses are affected by the pandemic, these special sessions are free of charge,” said Nantapong.

Apart from the showcase and business matching, visitors are invited to learn more about gems and jewellery trends and participate in other activities, including online seminars held by the Gem and Jewellery Institute of Thailand (GIT) and the BGJF Flash Sale.

Great Wall Motor kickstarts Rayong production with new SUV offering

China’s Great Wall Motor (GWM)’s smart factory in Rayong is now ready to kick-off production under the automaker’s “intelligence, safety and green” concept.

The first unit to roll off the Thai production line will be the all-new Haval H6 Hybrid SUV, pre-sales for which will start from June 15.

The factory was launched in a special event titled “GWM Smart Factory for Smart xEV World”. Present were Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit, China’s Economic and Commercial Minister Counsellor Wang Liping, Eastern Economic Corridor Office secretary-general Kanit Sangsubhan and Great Wall Motor’s Asean and Thailand leadership team led by president Elliot Zhang and vice-president Greg Lee. Also attending were government representatives and GWM’s business partners.

“Our Rayong plant is GWM’s second-largest production base overseas and its opening demonstrates our readiness to manufacture quality products for distribution across Asean. “Today’s event marks an important milestone in GWM’s globalisation strategy, realising our expansion into Asean, especially into markets for right-hand-drive vehicles,” he said.

Located in Rayong’s Pluak Daeng district, the 412-rai factory has the capacity to produce 80,000 units per year. It will serve as GWM’s key production base for right-hand-drive vehicles in Southeast Asia, 60 per cent of which will be for the local market and 40 per cent for overseas markets.

“By setting up our production base in Rayong, GWM is contributing to the Thai automotive industry as we have brought in our automobile technology to help drive the industry development to the next level. It is also an opportunity for us to discover partnerships with Thai innovators and auto-parts producers who will co-develop products with us. More importantly, we have created new jobs, shared our expertise, and supported skills development in the field of modern automobiles, including electric vehicle production technology, as we equip our local workforce with readiness and competency to produce and deliver quality automobiles to Thai people,” said Lee.

According to Steven Wang, vice president of sales and marketing, the Haval H6 Hybrid SUV will be produced in line with GWM’s production, testing and evaluation standards. The SUV will come equipped with a Life+ intelligent system, comprising Level 2 autonomy, voice command support, firmware over-the-air remote software updates, EYEQ4 intelligent chipset, plus many more other features to make driving a convenient, fun and safe activity. The all-new Haval H6 Hybrid SUV will begin its pre-sales on June 15 ahead of its official launch and price announcement on June 28.

THAI will operate flights to 16 international destinations in July-Sept period

In response to increasing demand for leisure, business and transit travel, Thai Airways International (THAI) will operate return flights to sixteen international destinations during the July-September period, chief commercial officer Nond Kalinta said in a press release.

The airline’s regional routes are:

Bangkok-Tokyo (Narita): three flights per week every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Bangkok-Tokyo (Haneda): two flights per week, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Bangkok-Osaka: three flights per week every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Bangkok-Nagoya: two flights per week, Thursdays and Sundays.

Bangkok-Seoul: two flights per week every Thursday and Sunday.

Bangkok-Taipei: three flights per week, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Bangkok-Hong Kong: five flights per week every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Bangkok-Lahore: two flights per week, Fridays and Sundays.

Bangkok-Dhaka: one weekly flight every Friday.

Thai halal food thriving in global market thanks to higher Covid-protection standards

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) has said that halal food from Thailand continues gaining trust worldwide thanks to elevated Covid-safety production standards.

DITP is also launching the “Thailand Delivers with Safety” campaign with a revenue target of 122.09 billion baht this year.

Somdet Susomboon, DITP director-general, said the Covid-19 pandemic has consumers across the world worried about their health and well-being.

In line with this, DITP has launched many campaigns to boost the export potential of halal food produced in Thailand, including improving the brand image of halal products and holding promotional activities in targeted countries.

The production of halal food in Thailand is done in strict adherence to the Islamic principles on ingredients, production, cultivation and employee practices to meet the halal criteria.

The products are monitored and certified by the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand (CICOT).

Apart from reassuring consumers and building trust among trade partners, DITP is also fortifying safety measures in food manufacturing by launching Covid-19 prevention measures for manufacturers, exports, businesses, raw-material suppliers as well as logistics operators to strictly comply with. Under these measures,

business operators and suppliers shipping ingredients must intensify efforts to reduce the risk of contamination.

Manufacturers must implement strict quality and safety controls through the production line, from receiving shipments of ingredients to storing, processing, packing as well as maintaining preventive measures for transporting goods by cleaning and disinfecting the interior of containers.

Manufacturers will be required to prioritise sanitation and strictly clean and disinfect machinery, manufacturing buildings, floors, walls as well as common areas prone to contact. Workers, meanwhile, will be trained to protect themselves from Covid-19 and maintain safety practices during operation.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s export of halal food to Islamic countries this year is expected to reach approximately 122.09 billion baht, up 3 per cent from 118.53 billion baht in 2020.

Thailand is a major exporter of high-quality halal food products including chicken, shrimp, canned tuna, rice, fresh and dried fruits fresh, chilled and frozen vegetables, snacks, instant food, frozen food, ready-to-eat food, cosmetics, fashion, etc.

The top product exports to Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries are rice, sugar, canned and processed seafood, cassava products, canned and processed fruits, respectively.

The halal food market is worth approximately US$1.2 trillion and Thailand is a champion with a competitive advantage in logistics and a vast variety of products.

Four Thai game developers win dream shot at multitrillion-baht global industry

Four teams of Thai gaming developers have “unlocked the next level” in the government’s start-up incubator and will now get help from Nintendo in their quest to become industry players.

The four winners of Game Accelerator Program Batch #1, run by the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa), will be upskilled by Nintendo and then be matched with potential investors. The winning teams will also get the chance to test their software on real games players before launching their products in Thailand and abroad.

Thailand’s first accelerator programme for the gaming industry will help Thai developers meet international standards in an industry that is growing exponentially, said depa president Nuttapon Nimmanphatcharin.

Nenin Ananbanchachai, president of the Thai Game Software Industry Association, said Covid-19 lockdowns had resulted in a significant increase in digital gamers, with 41 per cent (27.8 million) of Thailand’s population now playing online. In 2020, the game market was worth US$159 billion or about 4.9 trillion baht, according to e-sports marketing consultancy Newzoo. That figure is expected to grow to $200 billion by 2023.

“Such statistics have led us to believe that there will be more investment and manpower in the Thai gaming industry in the near future. Moreover, we might be able to see companies in the gaming industry listed in the new sector on the Stock Exchange of Thailand so that investors can invest in those games development companies,” said Nenin.

Bangkok, 25 May 2021 – The Trade Competition Commission (TCC) continues to create fairness protecting fruit growers across the country during the harvest season when a wide variety of fruit are exported to market, as well as warning business operators (Lhong) not to do anything that is considered an offense.

The guidelines for unfair trade practices include monopoly, (reduction or limitation of competition) in the fruit buying business which consists of 1) not specifying the date or time of fruit picking, 2) negotiation of the price of fruit purchase below what is specified in the contract, 3) unfair trade practices that can cause damage, and 4) collusion in fixing fruit price. Any fruit growers who encounter issues, being exploited or treated unfairly by a fruit buying business operator (Lhong) can make a complaint directly to The Office of Trade Competition Commission or via the website and other channels immediately.

TCC warns Lhongs of any practices that may be deemed an offense, and action that will be taken if complaints regarding farmer exploitation are proven true.

Mr. Santichai Santawanpas, Commissioner, Trade Competition Commission and Spokesman of The Trade Competition Commission, revealed that particularly during the season (when a wide variety of fruits are provided to market), fruit growers may be exploited by fruit buying business operators (Lhong) due to their lower bargaining power. The Trade Competition Commission (TCC) has, therefore, emphasized the importance of supervising fruit growers to guarantee more fairness by imposing strict guidelines on unfair trade practices including monopolies, (reduction or limitation of competition) which is effective from 8 September 2020.

The aforementioned guidelines stipulate unfair trade behaviors that may constitute an offense pursuant to Section 57 of the Trade Competition Act 2017 consisting of:

1. Not specifying the date or time of fruit picking, using the superior bargaining power including unfair trade conditions that prevent farmers from selling fruit to other fruit buyers, etc.

2. Negotiation of the purchase price below what is stipulated in the contract for no justifiable reason, determination of fruit qualities or any other conditions that are unfair, etc.

3. Delaying fruit picking, failing to collect fruit in the amount agreed in the contract or picking only a certain amount of fruit including other behaviors that are considered unfair trade practices, etc.

4. Collusion to monopolise or reduce competition, such as jointly agreeing on a specific purchase price or limiting the quantity of goods or jointly determining the trading area, etc.

TCC warns Lhongs of any practices that may be deemed an offense, and action that will be taken if complaints regarding farmer exploitation are proven true.

Mr. Santichai added that there is a problem of fruit growers being exploited every year. The Trade Competition Commission (TCC) is aware of the grievances of farmers in this regard and has instructed the Office of Trade Competition Commission (OTCC) to supervise fairness under trade competition law and seriously punish offenders. There have been 10 complaints regarding unfair trade practices by the fruit buying business operators (Lhong) from farmers in the eastern region. One of which was found guilty of unfair trade practices according to Section 57 and was fined. The maximum fine is 10% of the income in the year of the offense. The other 8 cases are being investigated by the subcommittee, and are expected to obtain the findings which will be presented to the Trade Competition Commission (TCC) for consideration soon. Another case was closed because it is a case of civil disputes that do not fall into the scope of the trade competition law due to the relatively high rate of fine. Therefore, fruit buying business operators (Lhong) should be mindful of trade practices that may be considered an offense under the unfair trade practices guidelines including monopoly. Any fruit growers who encounter an issue or are being exploited or treated unfairly by a fruit buying business (Lhong) can make a complaint directly to the Office of Trade Competition Commission or via the website www.otcc.or.th or telephone number 02-199-5444, as well as email: info@otcc.or.th.

Dow Introduces Innovative UCARSOL™ solution to fight global warming

Dow, the global leader of materials science, has introduced UCARSOL™ to the Thailand market; the company’s innovative solution against global warming. UCARSOL™ is already popular abroad. The greenhouse gas capture solution for the industrial sector reduces energy consumption in the capture process more so than other methods; reducing the mass of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere and permitting the captured gas to be further utilized.

Dow invented UCARSOL™ to capture carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide gas emissions from big industrial companies, which generate large amounts of these greenhouse gases—especially in the oil refinery industry and in gas separation plants, power plants, and fertilizer plants. By effectively capturing these gases with more efficient energy use, UCARSOL™ helps fight global warming and can be used to claim carbon credits.

Mr. Vichan Tangkengsirisin, Commercial Director, Asia Pacific of Dow, said, “Dow developed the UCARSOL™ innovation to address and resolve environmental issues that capture up to 90% of greenhouse gases, while conserving energy in the process. Both the UCARSOL™ and the captured gases can be recirculated. Nowadays, environmental protection is imperative in business. As a result, this group of products has a growth rate of at least 10% per year, which is expected to continue to increase. Many Asian countries with strict environmental laws, such as South Korea and Japan, have been implementing this solution for many years. It has started to be applied in Thailand, but not yet widely.”

In 2020 case study, using UCARSOL™, refinery customers in South Korea could reduce the sulfur dioxide emitted into the air by more than 75% and reduce the heat energy used in the gas capture process by 34%; equal to one-third reduction in energy costs without shutdown plant operation to change the solvent, which are both time consuming and costly. The oil refinery can reduce carbon dioxide content by up to 2,500 tons per year (equivalent to 250,000 trees) and sulfur dioxide by 410 tons per year.

In 2019 case study from Japan, the Japanese government, in collaboration with Osaki CoolGen Corporation, built a power plant as a pilot project to reduce air pollution. They chose SELEXOL™ Max, a highly efficient UCARSOL™ technology, to capture 90% of carbon dioxide. The 99% pure, retained carbon dioxide could then be used to benefit other industries; reducing carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by 150,000 tons per year, and equivalent to planting 1.5 million trees.

In 2017, Dow Thailand Group has partnered with IRPC’s oil refineries to increase the efficiency of carbon dioxide capture, reduce the amount of steam consumption, and energy consumption. Steam energy can be conserved worth 41 million baht per year; energy consumption can be reduced by approximately 30%; and greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by 20%–or 4,382 tons of carbon per year, which is equivalent to planting more than 430,000 trees.

Thailand to Co-Host OECD Southeast Asia Regional Forum 2021 for Regional Cooperation to ‘Build Back Better’ After COVID-19

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), will co – host the OECD Southeast Asia Regional Forum 2021 under the theme “Human Capital Development in Southeast Asia: Fostering Competitiveness to Build Back Better” in virtual format on Thursday, 20 May 2021 at 14.00-18.00 hrs. (GMT +7).

This year, the Forum will discuss policy enablers and responses to human capital challenges in the region. The Forum will emphasise the transformative impact of digitalisation on education and skills, as well as how to reshape the current education and skills strategies to enhance resilience and competitiveness of Southeast Asia’s human resources in a fast-changing world of work. H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, will deliver opening remarks in the Forum, along with H.E. Mr. Angel Gurría, Secretary-General of the OECD, and H.E. Mr. Choi Joong-Moon, 2nd Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea.

The OECD initiated the annual Southeast Asia Regional Forum in 2015 as a platform for OECD and ASEAN members to discuss cooperation and share experiences and best practices. Participants in the Forum include high-level representatives from the public sector, business community, academia as well as civil society of the OECD and ASEAN.
