Smart energy solutions company, Banpu Next, and car-sharing startup, Haupcar, have launched the “Banpu Next EV Car Sharing for Caring” project in which free EV cars will be provided for medical personnel at Chulalongkorn Hospital for three months as they fight the Covid-19 contagion.

Somruedee Chaimongkol, chief executive officer of Banpu Public Co Ltd and acting CEO of Banpu Next, along with Haupcar Co Ltd’s CEO and co-founder Krit Vichaiwatanapanich, and Takenori Harada, managing director of electric car manufacturer FOMM (Asia) Co Ltd, presented the fleet to the management of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital recently.

Cars can be booked and unlocked via the Haupcar app, before the user drives it away. This does away with the need to have any physical contact with another person, which is in perfect compliance with the social-distancing measure.

Huawei: A Year and Beyond

May 19. 2020
By THE NATION

[Shenzhen, China, May 18] Huawei held its 17th annual Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen, both onsite and online.

At the event, Huawei was joined by over 2,000 analysts, key opinion leaders, and media representatives from a range of industries, including telecoms, the Internet, and finance. Together, they discussed how the industry can work together to weather the difficult times, achieve win-win outcomes, and accelerate the arrival of the intelligent world.

At the opening of the event, Huawei’s Rotating Chairman Guo Ping delivered a keynote speech titled “Huawei: A Year and Beyond”. Guo Ping started by sharing Huawei’s experience and business results of the past year. He said, “Over the past year, many technologies became unavailable to us. Despite this, Huawei struggled to survive and is striving to move forward.”

Huawei has long been an active contributor to the ICT industry. Since it was founded, Huawei has been committed to bringing digital to more people, homes, and organizations, in order to move the world forward. In the past 30-plus years, Huawei has deployed over 1,500 networks in more than 170 countries and regions, serving over 3 billion people worldwide. We also provide smart devices to 600 million consumers. US actions against Huawei will not only harm Huawei, but also harm the experiences of customers and consumers that use Huawei’s products and services.

Guo Ping, Huawei’s Rotating Chairman, delivers a keynote speech at the 17th annual Global Analyst Summit

ICT infrastructure is the foundation of the intelligent world. By 2025, the digital economy will represent an industry worth 23 trillion US dollars. The ICT industry still has great potential. Standing at the threshold of the intelligent world, we can see more opportunities than challenges for the ICT industry.

Looking ahead, Huawei will continue investing and innovating in three domains: connectivity, computing, and smart devices. We will work with customers, partners, standards organizations, and all other industry players in domains like supply chain, standards, and talent cultivation, to encourage open collaboration, promote inclusive industry development, and explore the future together.

Guo Ping stated, “Today the world is an integrated collaborative system. The trend of globalization shouldn’t and will not likely be reversed. Fragmented standards and supply chains benefit no one, and further fragmentation will have a severe impact on the entire industry. The industry as a whole should work together to strengthen IPR protection, safeguard fair competition, protect unified global standards, and promote a collaborative global supply chain.”

The first Huawei Global Analyst Summit took place in 2004, and has been held annually ever since. This year’s summit runs from May 18 to 20, with a series of parallel sessions. Attendees include industry experts from around the world, who discuss and share their insights into industry trends, tech trends, and global collaboration. MEA offers 7 tips on cutting your summer electricity bill

May 18. 2020
By THE NATION

The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) has offered tips to customers on how to reduce their power bills in summer, after seeing a sharp spike in electricity usage among householders due to the work-at-home directive to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The seven major tips for cutting your bill are:

1. Set air-conditioners to 26 degrees Celsius, and use electric fans to increase cooling airflow in the room.

2. Unplug electric tea-kettles when you don’t need hot water. Keeping the water hot all day can increase your power bill by up to Bt123 per month.

3. Do not overstock the refrigerator, and keep the door closed after use. Also, place the fridge at least 15cm from the walls to reduce heat.

4. Use computer components that are certified with the Energy Star standard to save electricity. A laptop also consumes up to three time less power than a desktop computer.

5. Some appliances still consume electricity in standby mode, so make sure to unplug them when not in use for prolonged periods.

6. Avoid ironing in air-conditioned rooms as the heat will make the A/C work harder. It is also recommended to iron a lot of clothes in one session to save power.

7. Switch to LED bulbs, which are 50-75-per-cent more energy efficient than other types. An 18-watt LED lamp can be as bright as a 32-watt fluorescent lamp and save Bt14 per month if used five hours per day.

Bonds a safer bet in Covid-19 era, advises expert

May 14. 2020
By The Nation

Some stability will return to the capital and bonds markets after central banks worldwide step in to supervise the market, said Kiattisak Preecha-anusorn, assistant vice president for Krungsri Asset Management’s Alternative Investment Department.

“This will help the credit spread of high-yield bonds to rise from 4 per cent to 12 per cent,” he said, adding that the current credit spread for high-yield bonds was between 8 and 9 per cent.

“Hence, we expect investors who hold high-yield bonds to gain more than 20 per cent from interest and price differences,” he added.

Kiattisak said Krungsri Asset Management has also started the Krungsri Diversified Income Fund (KFDIVERSE), which will be up for offer from May 19 to 26.

“This global bond fund will focus on investments in high-yield bonds in emerging markets,” he said. “PIMCO, a global investment management fund, will be responsible for finding returns on investments that are higher than the market, while individual investors can add this fund to their investment portfolio.”

Matthew Livas, senior vice president and credit product strategist at PIMCO, said investing in a global bond fund will help cut down on risks and offer a high return on investment now that global markets have become volatile due to the pandemic.

“We will focus on investment in line with the economy by analysing the worst situation and considering the liquidity of each investment assets to reduce risks and create high return on investment,” he said.

“Currently, PIMCO has created return on investment at 6.3 per cent per year.”

May 13. 2020
By THE NATION

AirAsia is rolling out contactless procedures for essential travel including contactless payments at the airport, contactless kiosks, gate checks, as well as features on its mobile app to help ensure a safe and smooth travel experience.

The airline has set up contactless payment options including AliPay and WeChat Pay at Kuala Lumpur airport, and will roll them out at other airports gradually. Other options such as BigPay and Touch N Go will also be available soon.
