Ajinomoto Gears Up A Strategy To Reduce Global Warming By Investing A Budget Worth 1,500 Million Baht In The Construction Of The “Biomass Cogeneration Power Plant”, Aiming To Produce Electricity From Alternative And Renewable Energy Sources To Reduce The Use Of Electricity From Energy Sources That Cause Environmental Impacts.

To respond to the Group’s commitment in 2030 to reducing our environmental impact by 50% and to becoming “Carbon Neutrality” with an effort to achieve Net-zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2050, the Kamphaeng Phet Factory, a huge production base of AJI-NO-MOTO® MSG and AJITIDE I+G® products, was piloted as an exemplary “Greenest Factory” of the Ajinomoto Group of companies in Thailand.

The official opening ceremony of the “Biomass Cogeneration Power Plant” was recently held and presided over by Mr Ichiro Sakakura, President of Ajinomoto Co., (Thailand) Ltd., honorably attended by Mr Chawalit Sang-uthai, Provincial Governor of Kamphaeng Phet, together with Dr Orathai Pongruktham, Technical Advisor of Thailand Environment Institute and Secretariat of Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD), Mr Rongphet Bunchuaidee, Deputy Executive Director, Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization), and a group of media to visit Ajinomoto’s greenest factory in Kamphaeng Phet Province.

Mr Ichiro Sakakura said that “the Ajinomoto Group is striving to work for climate resilience by conducting business in line with the Bio-Circular-Green Economy concept to reduce environmental impacts, starting from the procurement of raw materials, the production of products, as well as the development of eco-friendly technology, including actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, alternative or renewable energy usage, waste management, and efficient use of water resources. In 2001, the company established FD Green (Thailand) Co., Ltd as the first “Green Business Model” of the Group of Companies in Thailand to manage the “Co-products” derived from the MSG production, which were developed into many agricultural products. The company also continuously invested in developing advanced technologies to support CO2 emission reduction, such as implementing “biomass boiler technology” that uses rice husks as the biomass fuel to generate the steam for the production process, which helps reduce the fuel oil usage, installing a “solar rooftop” inside the factory, etc., resulting in lower CO2 emissions of approximately 130,000 tons a year. In addition, the company has invested a budget worth 1,500 million baht to construct the “Biomass Cogeneration Power Plant”, a project that follows the Clean Development Mechanism with a capacity of 9.9 MW that has already started producing electricity since last August. This will additionally support reducing CO2 emissions by 50,000 tons a year, which enables us a reduction of CO2 emissions by 180,000 tons in total per a year, or the equivalent of carbon dioxide absorption by over 20 million trees.”

Mr Takumi Kazarimoto, Vice President of Ajinomoto Co., (Thailand) Ltd. added that “the operation of this Biomass Cogeneration Power Plant allows us additionally reduce greenhouse gas emission by 40% compared to year 2018. Besides, every Ajinomoto’s factory and business establishment also strictly adhere to the policies and practices on environmental conservation, such as maximizing the use of resources in accordance with the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), including the management of waste and waste water treatment by using modern technology, which results in a higher quality outcome than the standard required by law. The Ajinomoto Group aims to become a “solution-providing group of companies for food and health issues” by working to reduce environmental impacts by following “The Ajinomoto Group Creating Shared Value (ASV)” as a conceptual framework for the Ajinomoto Group’s work worldwide.”

Regarding all efforts, the factory has received many outstanding awards. For example, in 2008, Thailand’s Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) certified that the biomass project from using the rice husks in replacement of fuel oil can lower carbon dioxide emissions significantly. The factory has also earned the award of ISO14001 for quality environmental management, including the Green Industry Award Level 4 and many other environmental awards. Mr. Sakakura also stated that the factory is committed to operating the business in compliance with laws & regulations and environmental care within the community, following our intention that “Ajinomoto always grows with Thais.”

AstraZeneca prepares future plans for emerging diseases

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2022

THE NATION

In A Recent Interview With The Nation, John Perez, Senior Vice President, Head Of Late Development, Vaccines & Immune Therapies At AstraZeneca, Discussed The Company’s Development Of COVID-19 Vaccine That Significantly Reduces The Disease Severity And Mortality Rate, As Well As Plans That AstraZeneca Has Prepared For Emerging Diseases In The Future.

Q. Do we currently have enough data to foresee what’s next for COVID-19 and the vaccination trend?

A. The pandemic is still not over and there is still a lot of work for us to do. I believe COVID-19 will become endemic, which means it won’t end but will likely become a recurrent seasonal virus which will require vaccinations, or boosters, to main critical immunity across populations.

We need to protect the most vulnerable people in society and to reduce any further impact on healthcare infrastructures and economies, and that means booster vaccinations will be at the centre of future strategies as countries determine how to live with the virus and limit its effect.

Having a booster maintains your immunity to COVID-19 and much like the flu vaccine, it’s likely COVID-19 vaccines will become annual for most people and every 6-months for the more vulnerable groups of society.

And even as much of the world learns to live with COVID-19, there continues to be a significant need to protect vulnerable and high-risk populations like the immunocompromised, who do not respond adequately to vaccination. That is where solutions like long-acting antibodies (LAAB) will come in.

AstraZeneca prepares future plans for emerging diseases

Q. As we are entering the endemic phase, any plans for future vaccine research and development globally?

A. Last year, we established the Vaccines & Immune Therapies Unit at AstraZeneca as COVID-19 has changed the landscape for vaccines and immune therapies, making this an interesting area of focus even as the world transitions to an endemic phase. We have a portfolio of vaccines and monoclonal antibodies which we will announce at the appropriate time.

We believe we can make a difference with our strong capabilities in this area. We have 20 years of expertise with monoclonal antibodies in respiratory infectious diseases, including passive immunization and prophylaxis use, as well as the vaccine capabilities we demonstrated through COVID-19 – building our customer base and scaling manufacturing rapidly.

AstraZeneca prepares future plans for emerging diseases

Q. It seems AstraZeneca might keep us waiting for the next gen vaccine whilst continue support the expansion of booster coverage using already available vaccines. What’s the (medical) reason behind this move?

A. Countries should prioritise boosting their populations with COVID-19 vaccines currently available to them, to minimise any delay in giving people the protection they need. That’s because the risk of developing serious outcomes, such as hospitalisation and death, becomes higher if vaccination programs are delayed while awaiting variant-specific vaccines.

Importantly, numerous global real-world studies have shown that currently available vaccines provide consistent, high levels of protection against severe disease across different COVID-19 variants, including Omicron.

Real world data also demonstrates that booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccines already used, including AstraZeneca’s vaccine, may remain the most effective way to boost protection against severe outcomes until the effectiveness of variant vaccines has been established.

Q. For people who are still uncertain to get LAAB, can you provide LAAB efficiency towards Omicron and subvariants?

A. AstraZeneca’s LAAB is authorised for pre-exposure prophylaxis (prevention) of COVID-19 in many countries around the world and for treatment in Japan and Europe. In Thailand, LAAB was granted conditional marketing authorisation for prevention of COVID-19, in a broad population of adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older.

Real world effectiveness studies with immunocompromised patients have shown a consistent benefit against symptomatic and severe disease caused by Omicron variants.

The LAAB has been shown to retain in vitro neutralisation activity against 29 SARS-CoV-2 variants to date, including BA.5, the current globally dominant variant. A growing body of real-world evidence has demonstrated significantly lower rates of symptomatic COVID-19 and/or hospitalization and death for patients receiving LAAB compared to control arms.

AstraZeneca prepares future plans for emerging diseases

Q. As many countries have started procuring LAAB for treatment of COVID-19, could you share reasons for adapting LAAB instead of other medicines?

A. Despite progress in vaccination efforts, there continues to be a significant need for tolerable and effective therapies that can be used to treat the disease early and help prevent poor outcomes in high-risk patients such as the immunocompromised, older adults and those with co-morbidities.

AstraZeneca’s LAAB has already made a big impact preventing infection in vulnerable populations, such as the immunocompromised, and now has the potential to play an important role in COVID-19 treatment.

According to results of the TACKLE Phase III treatment trial, LAAB provided clinically and statistically significant protection against progression to severe COVID-19 or death from any cause compared to placebo, in patients at high risk of progression to severe disease, and with earlier treatment leading to improved efficacy.

The best way to treat COVID-19 is to prevent infection in the first place.  However, for high-risk patients who have not achieved protection, where authorised, the LAAB is now a new option that can both treat the infection and provide continued, long-term protection.  Also, after treatment with LAAB, high risk patients remain vulnerable to reinfection so the LAAB will provide prophylaxis in addition to short term treatment.

Q. Since the Covid-19 pandemic has catalyzed public awareness of vaccine technologies (i.e., Viral vector vaccines, mRNA vaccines, Inactivated vaccines etc.), do you think this knowledge will transform or affect the public attitude toward vaccines and other medical treatments, as a whole?

A. This is an incredibly exciting time for the healthcare sector as innovation and technology advances at a rapid pace to bring life-saving diagnostics, treatment and medicines to people who need it the most.

We have a real opportunity now to build on the global collaboration we witnessed during the pandemic to future-proof our health systems and bridge the medical divide.

In terms of transforming public attitude, for now we hope people ensure they stay protected against COVID-19 with booster vaccinations as that remains the most effective way of avoiding the most serious outcomes from the virus.

AstraZeneca prepares future plans for emerging diseases

Q.  What will the healthcare industry look like in the post-pandemic world?

A. If there is one thing COVID-19 has taught us, it is the power of partnership when it comes to saving lives and delivering equitable healthcare and this is something we will see much more of in the industry.

One strong example of this is the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience, or PHSSR, which is now active in more than 20 countries and allows us to work with local stakeholders to build knowledge and improve the sustainability and resilience of healthcare systems.

Our goal is for AstraZeneca to be a leader in sustainability and for others to join us in our commitment to having zero carbon emissions from operations in the short-term and in the longer term, working towards the goal of ensuring our entire value chain is carbon negative.
The developments in healthcare are astonishing – from the creation of precision medicines to the use of AI to help us design smarter trials and match patients with the right clinical trials through to online access to hospitals and doctors, allowing us to reach a greater population and reduce existing pressure on services.

Seven Airlines Under The Thai Airlines Association Are On Cloud Nine, As Increasing Passenger Numbers And An Improving Pandemic Situation Fuel Recovery This Year.

Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Thai AirAsia X, Thai Smile Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai Vietjet have all seen passenger numbers shoot up by around 50 per cent of the level in 2019, before the pandemic appeared and went on to cause global havoc.

Association president Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth said on Tuesday that he estimated the seven airlines would bounce back to the same level of 2019 by the fourth quarter of 2023.

“Domestic flights are now back to around 80 per cent, and should be fully restored in the second half of next year as airlines expect more foreign tourists to visit the country and travel across provinces,” said Puttipong.

According to him, no member airlines have immediate plans to hike airfares, as the industry needs to attract more passengers during the recovery phase and therefore must keep prices competitive.

Airlines also need to control operational costs amid unstable factors such as rising fuel prices, inflation and the currency exchange rate, so that their ticket price structures are not affected, he added.

Speaking as CEO and president of Bangkok Airways (BA), Puttipong said BA is discussing with 27 partner airlines resumption of a codeshare agreement that had been suspended due to the pandemic.

He said BA’s current international passengers are only 20 per cent of the number before Covid-19, since about 70 per cent of its international passengers are from codeshare flights.

“BA is now flying 20 planes from our total fleet of 37. All of our domestic flights are now resuming, while international flights have been opened to 50 per cent of destinations, such as Phnom Penh, Rangoon, Maldives, Singapore and Danang,” he said.

“The next international flight scheduled for this high season is Bangkok-Luang Prabang.”

Bangkok Airways is eying 2.2 million passengers in 2022, after passing the 1-million milestone in the first six months. The airline’s average load factor this year is estimated at 70 per cent.

Electrification And The Path To Net-Zero

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2022

THE NATION

By Ron Beck, Senior Director, Industry Marketing And Lawrence Ng, Vice President, APJ, Aspen Technology, Inc.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration projects a nearly 50% increase in world energy use by 2050, led by growth in renewables. Similarly, the demand for electricity will increase 75 – 100% within the same time-period, driven by the shift in mobility to electric vehicles, and industrial electrification. Most of the projected increase in demand will be met by renewable energy. As most renewable power options, such as solar and wind, will be generated away from population centers, larger capacity, and more resilient transmission systems will be key. While distribution systems need to grow and be more dynamic, cybersecurity remains a concern.

The game changer lies with digital technology, which is mission-critical for electrification, as the shift from fossil-based systems to electric will drive change within the existing power infrastructure and beyond, with new microgrids, and self-generation at industrial sites. Digital solutions used in power management will manage the complex power requirements, facilitate cybersecurity, integrate advanced analytics and AI to automate reliability, and flexibly enable distributed, loosely coupled microgrids.

Mitigating growing energy demand and emissions

According to McKinsey, the top three generators of greenhouse gas (CO2 and methane) emissions in 2019 were from power generation (30%); industry (20%); mobility (19%) – mostly from the burning of fossil fuels for energy. This January 2022 report titled “The net-zero transition: what it would cost, what it could bring” focuses on opportunity for power generators and industry to invest preferentially in renewable, low-carbon energy sources, and electrify industrial processes. As such, the electrification of heavy industry to meet the decarbonization imperative is driving 50% more growth in electricity, than from mobility alone.

To mitigate growing global energy demand, energy efficiency is key. Digital technologies will be instrumental in achieving 10 – 20% increase in energy efficiency. In support of net-zero targets, capital-intensive industries are focused on electrifying energy production and process heat, while ensuring that electrical generation aligns with their own sustainability initiatives.

At the same time, carbon trading, and carbon tax emissions-cutting policies are increasingly crucial in providing access to the right levels of capital for decarbonization investment in the most challenged economic zones and industry sectors. Investments in renewables and intelligent grids, go together with carbon trading. Digital solutions supporting distributed generation sources and grids are crucial for tracing carbon emissions from renewable source to industrial end use – and onward, complementary mass-balance solutions enable calculation and tracking the carbon intensity of finished products produced via renewable energy.

Fossil fuels will continue to be a significant source of global energy through 2050. However, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) will play an increasingly important role. To move beyond what CCUS can achieve, electrification has a key role in reducing carbon emissions. This is especially so, with new investments, almost exclusively in low-carbon electricity sources, and the retrofitting and replacement of older CO2 emitting utilities and processes in energy-intensive plants, which includes refining units, bulk chemicals, metals, such as aluminium. This shift in investment will drive a new generation of digital solutions to support the growing appetite for electrification.

Turning challenges into opportunities

With distributed power resources, grids will need to accommodate rapidly expanding and evolving distributed power production, storage and consumption models. New digital software will need to rapidly keep pace with the innovation of the power generation system.

Power grids will need to expand steadily beyond their current capacity and change their structure to eliminate single points of failure and to accommodate the dynamic nature of distributed renewables. Traditional grids are expensive to upgrade and digital solutions commonly used for transmission and distribution management are insufficient. The underlying solutions must be structured to accommodate increasing adoption of AI-driven solutions to further optimize and protect electrical networks.

With the increasing complexity of distribution systems, reliability and outage prevention becomes more challenging to manage with traditional approaches. Digital technology based on advanced data analytics and AI will become essential to assist operators in responding quickly and effectively to situations across a diverse system. To succeed, digital management systems will need to provide granular and easily visualizable views of the customer distribution network.

It is necessary to monetize distributed power, as advances in digital software provide this visibility, enabling distribution companies to monetize operations, optimization, maintenance and pricing of distributed power and storage. As vehicle batteries increase their capacity and capabilities, the mobility network can be monetized as a storage element of the connected grid.

Cybersecurity needs need to be met. Software providers like OSI have proven track records in meeting standards, reacting rapidly and updating systems for electric utility providers.

Microgrids have emerged as a key investment area to fill the regional void, while meeting demand and increasing reliability and security required by large power consumers, communities and localities. The right digital solution enables efficient, optimized development of microgrids, integrated with regional grids and developed in a more cohesive, intelligent way. This approach proactive innovation and adoption in new power generation connected storage, while ensuring reliable supply. In addition to battery storage, innovations, such as commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell storage, can be integrated easily.

Distributed power generation in industrial facilities is another important electrification opportunity. Cogeneration optimizes the usage of waste heat during power generation for supplemental process heat. Using the same adaptive process control and digital twin technologies applied to process equipment, an optimized amount of electricity is produced and predictively available. Digital software technologies are key in this area to make cogeneration practically available to a wider spectrum of industrial entities. These include energy management, electric utilities optimization, and self-maintaining advanced process control.

Between distributed generation, batteries, storge and integration, digital technology is a critical enabler of innovation and proactive planning for navigating the risks posed by increasingly interconnected grids. AI, advanced analytics, and system risk analysis are essential to understanding and planning for complex systems. Modeling and optioneering of new battery chemistry and industrial scale fuel cells with rigorous digital models are playing a crucial role in enabling the ecosystem of startups and innovators.

Energy management and beyond

As the process industry transforms to operate in a low-carbon future, electrification is a critical part of this journey. Product mixes are shifting from the use of transportation fuels to new sustainable materials. To support this trend, microgrids will become increasingly valuable for energy management at industrial sites. Industrial power producers need to align the renewables component of electric power consumed and generated onsite, with the associated carbon footprint benefit. Producers need to optimize power generation and satisfy process energy requirements from electricity.

Huawei Pledges Close Collaboration With Partners In Giant Leap Into The Cloud

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2022

Nongluck Ajanapanya

Huawei, China’s Leading Technology Firm, Announced Its Intention To Be A Partner To All Interested Parties In Accessing And Unleashing The Potential Of Cloud Technology, From Infrastructure To Industrial Applications.

Ken Hu, Huawei’s Rotating Chairman, delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of Huawei Connect 2022 on Monday (September 19) in Bangkok, emphasising the critical role of the cloud in leapfrogging development in this digital economy.

Huawei pledges close collaboration with partners in giant leap into the cloudHe outlined three ways in which the ICT ecosystem can assist in breaking down common barriers to digital transformation. The first step is to improve digital infrastructure, which includes more reliable connectivity and more powerful, diverse computing resources.

The second step is to assist organisations in going beyond simple cloud adoption and truly capitalising on the cloud, with a focus on advanced technology services that drive leapfrog development.

The third step is to create a digital ecosystem by collaborating with partner development, strengthening the digital talent pool, and providing more assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Over the last two years, GDP growth has been volatile. However, the global digital economy has seen consistent growth at more than 15 per cent in 2021. This has prompted many organisations to use next-generation digital technology to transform their operations and service offerings, Hu noted.

He also pointed out that there is no doubt cloud computing is the way of the future. Unfortunately, most organisations, particularly SMEs, limit the value of cloud computing to traditional benefits such as flexible infrastructure and resources.

Hu stated that Huawei, as a leading cloud technology company, recognised that it could not grow alone in this digital ecosystem. As a result, assisting its partners in realising the full potential of cloud technology will be critical to the long-term viability of the global economy.

He then gave an example of a successful case of Huawei’s cloud, the Pangu Drug Molecule Model, which uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to aid in the adoption of pre-train foundation models for faster drug discovery, reducing the R&D cycle of lead drugs from years to one month. Hence, the hospital at Xi’an Jiaotong University can make super antibiotics at a lower cost and in less time.

Huawei pledges close collaboration with partners in giant leap into the cloud

Meanwhile, Huawei Cloud CEO Zhang Ping’an revealed the launch of new Huawei Cloud Regions in Indonesia and Ireland at the event. By the end of 2022, Huawei Cloud will operate 75 availability zones in 29 regions around the world, expanding services to over 170 countries and regions.

“We connect data centres to data centres, and data centres to users, with high-speed backbone networks boosted by 1,700 carrier networks. This means you can seamlessly enjoy the best-in-class experience even for services such as real-time multimedia, gaming, and online classes,” said Zhang.

He emphasised that the cloud is the future that everyone is looking forward to. Huawei provides cloud services that include infrastructure, technology, and expertise.

“We build and maintain everything so you don’t have to build your own data centres. It only takes one click to obtain cloud-as-a-service at a lower cost and with a lower carbon footprint,” insisted Zhang.

In addition to its strong commitment to being a partner to all parties, Huawei used this special occasion to launch the “Go Cloud, Go Global” ecosystem plan. The plan is intended to accelerate the development of a global digital industry ecosystem for joint innovation and shared success, with a focus on “Everything as a Service”.

Huawei pledges close collaboration with partners in giant leap into the cloudHuawei Cloud is committed to building the industry-leading platform for cloud innovations by focusing on “Everything as a Service”, Zhang said.

As part of these efforts Jacqueline Shi, President of Huawei Cloud’s Global Marketing and Sales Service, announced the global launch of more than 15 new advanced services, including Huawei Cloud CCE Turbo, Ubiquitous Cloud Native Service (UCS), Pangu wave model, DataArts LakeFormation, Virtual Live, CodeCheck and CloudTest, KooMessage, KooSearch, and KooGallery.

The event also highlighted two additional measures: the Huawei Cloud Startup Program and the Cloud Native Elite Club (CNEC) Asia-Pacific region.

Huawei Cloud Startup Program is the company’s global startup ecosystem strategy that aims to help startups migrate to the cloud in an agile manner by providing assistance in technology, marketing, and other areas.

Meanwhile, the Cloud Native Elite Club Asia-Pacific is a cloud community that aims to advance cloud native technologies and align the industry around their evolution in the region, as well as to provide a platform for global cloud native professionals to share and connect with one another.

Three initiatives to help all industries go digital

To kick off the event, Ken Hu, Huawei’s Rotating Chairman, delivered a keynote outlining three ways the ICT ecosystem can help break through common barriers in digital transformation:

  • Boost digital infrastructure, including more robust connectivity and stronger, more diverse computing resources.
  • Help organizations go beyond simple cloud adoption and truly make the most of cloud, focusing on advanced technology services that drive leapfrog development.
  • Build out local digital ecosystems, including partner development, strengthening the digital talent pool, and providing more support for SMEs.

GDP growth has been unstable over the past two years. However, the digital economy has seen consistent growth on a global scale – more than 15% in 2021. This has prompted many organizations to transform their operations and service offerings with next-generation digital technology.

“Going digital is clearly the right choice,” said Hu. “The demand is there, and so are the technologies. The world is unleashing digital productivity, and it’s happening right now.”

Nok Air Puts Brakes On Korat-Chiang Mai Route After Losses

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2022

Nok Air Is Mulling Whether To Terminate Its Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat)-Chiang Mai Service Less Than Two Months After It Launched The New Route On August 2.

The budget carrier would become the 10th airline to abandon the route, which has so far proved uneconomical to fly.

Flights between the northeastern and northern cities have previously been offered by nine Thailand-based carriers in the hope of expanding to China. Thai Airways International, Air Andaman, Air Asia, Air Phoenix, Happy Air, Thai Regional Airline, Kan Air, and New Gen Airways all discontinued the route after they lost money.

After a four-year absence, Nok Air launched the latest service between Nakhon Ratchasima and Chiang Mai last month, using 86-seater Bombardier Q400 NextGen turboprop planes.

However, the service has suffered losses after failing to attract enough passengers. Some flights between the cities have carried only nine passengers.

Nok Air said it would suspend the route in October for routine plane maintenance.

On Friday, Nakhon Ratchasima governor Wichian Chantaranothai called a videoconference with Nok Air CEO Wutthiphum Jurangkool and representatives of relevant agencies and the travel sector.

Korat authorities offered incentives for the airline to continue the service but no solution was reached at the meeting.
