NT starts building gateway station for OneWeb satellite network

The National Telecommunications (NT) Plc has started building a gateway station for the OneWeb satellite constellation in Ubon Ratchathani province, NT deputy managing director Somyos Thanapirunthorn said.

Somyos said the construction of the satellite gateway station would take about eight months and it would serve as a gateway for the OneWeb satellite broadband internet connection for Asean within the second quarter of next year.

OneWeb is a global communications network powered by a constellation of 648 low Earth orbit satellites. Headquartered in London, OneWeb enables high-speed, low latency connectivity for governments, businesses, and communities everywhere around the world.

Somyos said the gateway station is being built on a 40,000-square metre area inside the Sirindhorn satellite station in Ubon Ratchathani under the OneWeb Satellite Network Portal Site Hosting Services.

The construction will build 14 antenna bases along with equipment and facilities that are designed to provide complete ground station services for OneWeb satellites, Somyos said.

He added that OneWeb has so far sent 428, or 66 per cent, of its 648 satellites constellation into orbit and the remaining satellites are expected to be launched within this year.

Somyos said the Sirindhorn gateway will be one of more than 40 gateway stations of OneWeb around the world.

The gateway will uplink and downlink data to connect with the entire OneWeb satellite constellation to provide internet connectivity around the world, Somyos added.

The NT, which is a state firm formed from the merger of CAT Telecom and TOT, has been carrying telecom satellite businesses for over 50 years, Somyos added.

SCG showcases ‘thinnest’ concrete bridge in Southeast Asia

The 30-metre-long Chalermphrakiart Bridge was built in the SCG head office compound in Bang Sue last year but the conglomerate announced the development only now to invite construction firms to learn about the new technologies under the company’s Green Construction philosophy.

SCG vice president Chana Phumee, who is in charge of the firm’s Cement and Green Solution Business, said the company used its ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) to build the “thin” concrete bridge.

Chana said the UHPC created a concrete pressure force five times higher than other technologies allow and helped the fabricated concrete to withstand heavy pressure and strong pulling forces, for example from material such as metal sheets.

According to him, with UHPC technology, fabricated concrete slabs can be made 30 per cent thinner than conventional ones.

Chana said the technologies allowed SCG to save energy during construction in line with its Green Construction policy, with the conservation reducing carbon emissions by 20 per cent compared to the normal construction process.

The bridge is only 30cm thick at its beams while the thinnest portion is a mere 2.5cm thick.

He said the bridge construction started in January last year and was completed in September.

SCG used a 3D digital model to design the structure and manage the construction. It also used CPAC Drone Solutions to precisely monitor the progress of the construction.

Businesses that want to update their construction technologies would do well to check out the bridge, Chana added.

Grab Thailand launched its first annual conference on Wednesday with the goal of providing a platform for both the private and public sectors to exchange ideas and explore the best solutions, particularly in a digital economy, social issues, human resources and the environment.

The “GrabNext” conference brings together digital and technology leaders and experts to discuss opportunities and approaches for strengthening the country’s digital economy, Grab Thailand executive director Worachat Luxhanalode said.

Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin praised the idea of the conference, which would allow government agencies to discuss key issues with businesses and find suitable solutions.

He revealed the ministry’s latest move to enact a new law focusing on the work-life welfare of informal workers.

Suchart promised to fight for this type of law enforcement.

“We also launched programmes to equip workers in the manufacturing sector and informal workers with the necessary skills in the new normal world,” Suchart noted.
 

As the private sector, such as Grab Thailand, steps forward to provide income opportunities from new types of jobs, Suchart believes this will be a watershed moment in Thailand’s long-term progress.

The event on Wednesday at Bangkok’s Athenee Hotel also included a panel discussion titled “The role of technology in a sustainable economy”, focusing on the future of work, digital inclusion and environmental sustainability.

All panellists agreed that the workforce, regardless of age or gender, must be integrated into the digital ecosystem. Private and public organisations must train their employees in new skills, while the government must devise appropriate regulations to encourage the growth of digital platforms in the country.

Worachat said GrabNext would be held twice a year.

The conference theme will change depending on the current situation, but it will primarily focus on the Environment, Social and Green (ESG) economy, as well as digital literacy and inclusion, he added.

Appeals Court orders 3 former execs to pay Nation Group THB13m

The Appeals Court on Monday ordered three former executives of Nation Multimedia Group (NMG) Plc to jointly pay the company 13.033 million baht plus accrued interest for falsifying company revenue.

The Appeals Court’s verdict against Sermsin Samalapa, Duangkamol Chotana, and Supoj Piansiri was read by the Civil Court on Monday.

Sermsin was a former director of the NMG’s board of directors, Duangkamol was NMG managing director, and Supoj the chief finance officer and board director.

NMG changed its name to Nation Group in early May this year.

The Appeals Court ruled that the three former executives had caused damage to the company by recording account receivable items that did not really exist, and thus causing damage to NMG as charged.

The Appeals Court dismissed the arguments of the three defendants that the plaintiff’s lawsuit was ambiguous.

The court ordered the three defendants to jointly pay 13.033 million baht to the company plus accrued interest. Interest was charged at 7.5 per cent per annum from the day the lawsuit was filed on February 4, 2019 to April 10, 2021 and 5 per cent per annum from April 11, 2021 to the day the amount is fully paid. But the 5 per cent interest rate could fluctuate according to the policy interest rate.

Earlier, the Civil Court had acquitted Sermsin and freed him from the responsibility of reimbursing the company on grounds that he did not cause damage to the company.

The primary court had ordered Duangkamol and Supoj to pay 17.535 million and 18.997 million to the company respectively, plus interest at 7.5 per cent.

“Santa Fe’,” one of Food Factor’s restaurant chains, plans to expand according to the ever-changing consumer lifestyle and needs for “Santa Fe’ Easy,” its quick-service restaurants (QSR), with nine new branches in office areas, gas stations, and community malls by the end of 2022 with the latest branch being the PTT Rama 2 (next to Soi 48) ready to serve.

Mr Sombat Hongpaitoon, Chief Executive Officer of KT Restaurant Co Ltd, reveals that “Santa Fe’ Easy” is a QSR business that the company has developed with a self-service business model for more convenience, in accordance with Mr Piti Bhirom Bhakdi, Chief Executive Officer of Food Factors Co Ltd. The policy drove the food business with diversity and more access points for consumers like gas stations, office buildings, and community malls.

“Santa Fe’ Easy’s” brand concept has always been “Fast Serve…Self-Serve,” highlighting how easy and fast consumers can enjoy quick-serve meals with speedier checkout and payment. While the brand still carries what makes the brand so popular, which is the steak varieties up to 31 menus, all at an affordable price.

Santa Fe’ Easy operates with five branches; Life Center Sathorn, The Rest Area PTT Prachachuen, Big C Rama 2, Lotus Wanghin, and Lotus Liab Klong 2. The brand will open its 6th branch at PTT Rama 2, next to Soi 48, which is another prominent location with a massive amount of traffic from consumers who stop by for gas and to spend time shopping and eating.

What makes Santa Fe’ Easy at PTT Rama 2 different is the new addition to menus like the crispy Fried Chicken Steak and three unique sauces, which are the steak sauce, the teriyaki sauce, and the cheesy dip, with the addition of Grilled Chicken Congee, and Grilled Pork Steak with Sticky Rice, all of which is available only at this branch.
