HOTEL

THE ARNOMA Grand Bangkok hotel is planning to undertake a major renovation and enter the hotel management business in two years.

Eric Brand, director of operations, said last week that the group would spend Bt150 million to refurbish rooms.

The project was expected to commence by the year-end and was scheduled to be completed within two years.

About Bt22 million would be invested in the hotel’s back house and equipment, such as chillers, energy machines and hotel water machines.

The hotel has already remodelled its lobby as well as some outlets at a cost of Bt100 million.

Established international brands Ah Yat Abalone Seafood Restaurant and Burasari Spa have rented space and started operating in the hotel.

The hotel is now offering more space for rental in an area aimed at becoming a new dining magnet in the Ratchaprasong area.

“We are the only independent hotel standing among big local and international chains in Ratchaprasong, which is also the best location for the business and leisure markets.

“We have been here for more than two decades,” he said.

Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, the owner of Arnoma Grand Bangkok and also the Felix River Kwai Resort in Kanchanaburi, is planning another big move as part of the group entering into its third decade.

“Soon, we are going to rebrand ourselves as Arnoma Hotels and Resorts and will be entering hotel management for the first time.”

The group aims to manage at least five hotels and resorts in major leisure destinations in the country over two years, including rebranding its property in Kanchanaburi.

Despite the low season, the Ratchaprasong hotel business was seeing its strongest year ever due to the boom in foreign visitors coming to the Kingdom.

The standouts are shoppers from Singapore, medical check-up clients from Myanmar and the Middle East and holidaymakers from the United States, Australia and Europe.

The hotel last week reported average occupancy of 85 per cent, up 5 percentage points from the low season last year.

All major hotels in the area are enjoying increase in occupancy rates of 5-10 percentage points.

In the coming high season, if there’s no tension, the hotel industry in the Ratchaprasong, Siam Square, Pratunam or Watergate areas would gain up to 90 per cent, which will be better than last year.

“The future is bright here as hotels and shopping malls are proceeding with a plan with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to initiate the ‘Ratchaprasong District’ to become the centre of business and leisure, same as branded communities in Sukhumvit, Ratchadaphisek and on the Chao Phraya River,” he added.

TV stations ramp up

ENTERTAINMENT

THE TV BROADCASTING market appears to be heating up as some leading stations are revamping their programming to capture more eyeballs, which should bring them higher ratings and revenues.

Market leader Channel 7 is reshuffling its TV schedule this month to broaden its audience by focusing more on non-prime time slots.

Palakorn Somsuwan, managing director of Bangkok Broadcasting and Television, the operator of Channel 7, said last week that besides offering blockbuster dramas and variety shows to lure mass audiences, his station had realised the importance of non-prime time slots – 9.30am-11am and 12.10am-1.10am.

“With the aim to boost audience ratings during those slots, Channel 7 has prepared a new line-up of entertainment programmes including situation comedies, variety talk shows and game shows, mainly targeting the family group,” he said.

The new daily non-prime time line-up features “Funny Family’s Show”, “The Family Million”, Chumtang Dao Thong” and “Ama Apartment”.

For the after-midnight time slot, the company is airing new shows related to movie reviews, food and travel news and culinary views.

“The new content strategy for non-prime time slots aims to help Channel 7 become an all-day prime-time station for all types of viewers,” he said.

Despite facing intense competition from new rivals, Channel 7 was able to retain its position as the No 1 broadcaster with an audience share of more than 30 per cent.

However, it seems to be a different story for No 2, Channel 3, run by Bangkok Entertainment Company, as its market share is being constantly nibbled away by strong competitors on the digital terrestrial TV platform.

To deal with this challenge, Surin Krittayaphongphun, acting president of BEC, said that besides continuing to emphasise top-rated programmes in this second half, Channel 3 and its networks – the 3SD and 3 Family digital channels – would add live broadcasts of top sports competitions such as the FIVB World Grand Prix Final and the Rio Olympic Games to boost ratings.

BEC and its affiliates recently secured an exclusive deal from the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) to broadcast four tournaments – Volleyball World Grand Prix, Volleyball World League, Women’s Club World and Championship/Men’s Club World Championship – for four years.

Run by RS Television, Channel 8 last month did not seem to be happy with its audience rating by media measurement firm Nielsen (Thailand) because its ranking slipped from fifth to sixth.

Surachai Chetchotisak, chairman and chief executive officer of RS, said his company decided to re-image its brand identity along with adding top South Korean series such as “Uncontrollably Fond” and “Doctor” on its night-time prime time slots starting from 10-11.15pm.

New variety shows such as “Sexpert” and “The Guest” would also appear this month.

THE Bangkok Expressway and Metro (BEM) will definitely be in contention for all the planned main mass rapid transit line network projects, as part of its growth strategy, executive director Phongsarit Tantisuvanitchkul said recently.

He said the company would pitch for all the main mass rapid transit lines. However, the final decision depends on the terms and conditions of the projects and their commercial viability.

BEM and BTS Group Holdings were among the companies who recently picked up the tender documents of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand’s two monorail projects – the Pink Line Khae Rai-Min Buri route, and the Yellow Line Lat Phrao-Samrong route. Bids must be submitted on November 7.

Phongsarit, who also serves as executive vice president for operations for listed construction firm Ch Karnchang, said that since BEM already operated the heavy rail system, it would have no difficulty in operating these two monorail lines, which BEM views as feeder lines.

The company is also keen to bid the Orange Line’s east section for the Thailand Cultural Centre-Min Buri (Suwinthawong) route. Bid documents will be available on July 15.

BEM has been granted concessions for two mass rapid transit rail system projects by the MRTA, including the MRT Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line (the initial Blue Line) Hua Lamphong-Bang Sue, and the Purple Line Bangyai-Taopoon. The Purple Line will be officially opened on August 6.

BEM was established on December 30, 2015 through the amalgamation of Bangkok Expressway (BECL) and Bangkok Metro Plc (BMCL). It was listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in January this year. Ch Karnchang is BEM’s major shareholder.

The Public-Private Partnership committee is expected to hold a meeting this month to consider whether to approve the resolution of the panel founded under Article 35 of the Public-Private Joint Investment Act that the MRTA should hold direct talks with BEM to allow the latter to operate the two extended routes of the Blue Line on the Bang Sue-Tha Phra and Hua Lamphong-Bang Khae sections.

Project fights floods, drought in Prachin Buri

RECOGNISING the importance of water management, the Honda Khiang Khang Thai Fund under the Honda Thailand Foundation, in collaboration with the Utokapat Foundation under Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King and a Prachin Buri public-private partnership, has rolled out a project to help manage communal water resources.

It will continue the Water Resource Development Project in the Prachin Buri Basin under Royal Patronage of HM the King. The project will enable the local community to prepare for the likelihood of floods and drought in a sustainable way.

The partners anticipate that the project will increase water-impoundment capability to 3.5 million cubic metres, resulting in compensation for damage and increased income for the community.

Once it is complete, the project will enable the community to become a model for others when it comes to managing and mitigating the risk of floods and drought in the future, said Pitak Pruittisarikorn, managing director of the Honda Khiang Khang Thai Fund.

This is the second year that the HKKT Fund has implemented the Water Resource Development Project in the Prachin Buri Basin as a major campaign. The project aims to raise awareness among Thais when it comes to withstanding natural disasters.

“Coinciding with the project, we have implemented a pilot activity to encourage a number of volunteers, including Honda employees, Honda distributors, and local people, to participate in a good-cause effort to develop water resources by restoring dams for agricultural and consumption use,” Pitak said.

“The project includes promoting vetiver grass and local plants as a way to conserve soil and water, and provide a soothing green area where local people can relax.”

Dr Royol Chitradon, secretary-general of the Utokapat Foundation, said site surveys by administrators from Muang Kao and Na Khaem sub-districts in Kabin Buri district discovered that flooding and drought problems had occurred repeatedly in this area for more than 10 years. This flooding is a consequence of huge masses of floating weeds blocking efficient water flow, and means that irrigation canals cannot do their job.

On top of that, Prachin Buri is an important watershed area that helps to withstand 70-80 per cent of the flooding in Khao Yai National Park and 100 per cent in Nakhon Nayok province, before it connects with the Prachin Buri River.

Because of the waterway facing a bottleneck in Chachoengsao province, it requires effective and participatory water management in these two sub-districts. Because of this, the HKKT Fund adopted the Kaem Ling Project that HM the King initiated as part of its measures to increase the water-storage capacity in areas such as dams and ponds between small canals.

The Rehabilitation and Development Project for Pla Kayang Swamp in particular represents a massive 448-rai (71.6-hectare) water-storage area that the fund plans to rehabilitate to increase its capacity. This will help significantly during periods of potential floods and droughts.

The HKKT Fund is supporting the Water Resource Development Project in the Prachin Buri Basin with a budget of Bt15.8 million for 2016, the second year of the project. The project covers the Muang Kao and Na Khaem sub-districts and coincides with the Rehabilitation and Development Project of Pla Kayang Swamp and Boong Kabao Canal.

When the project is completed this year, authorities anticipate an easing of the flooding problem that has caused tremendous damage to more than 10,000 rai of plantations in the two affected sub-districts. It will help reduce government spending and compensate for damages and losses.

The project will increase the water reserve for a 16,000-rai area and increase manufacturing income during the dry season. It will also increase water-storage capability to 3,459,821 cubic metres per year, including 14,093 rai of agricultural area, and will expand the water supply to 4,485 additional households, Pitak said.

Garment maker in radical shift to offset fall in orders from modern traders, wholesalers

SMES CORNER

Suprang Kaewcham, founder of Sadhida Garment.

Suprang Kaewcham, founder of Sadhida Garment.

SADHIDA Garment has shifted from its previous focus on fashion clothing to the making of uniforms, as well as using the online channel, in a bid to offset falling orders from modern trade outlets and wholesalers.

Running an original-equipment-manufacturing operation for more than 10 years, the company has witnessed a lack of cash flow in the past two years due to the sharp drop in orders from modern traders, and from wholesalers in Platinum Fashion Mall, said the company’s founder, Suprang Kaewcham.

Modern trade outlets and wholesalers together contribute 70 per cent of the company’s sales, with the remainder accounted for by exports via agents.

The economic slowdown has negatively affected consumer purchasing power, especially in the fashion segment, resulting in clients requesting the extension of credit terms, and leading to a cash-flow shortage, she explained.

In general, Sadhida Garment sets credit terms of 60 to 90 days for modern trade outlets, but when customers seek an extended repayment period, it leaves the company with insufficient cash to pay its accounts payable.

Moreover, sales by wholesalers in Platinum Fashion Mall have dropped by 20 per cent, and some wholesale customers have had to close down their businesses, Suprang said.

“We were obliged to pay off debt with SME Bank to the tune of Bt100,000 a month, but the cash-flow shortage meant we weren’t able to keep up our payments. We have had to go into rehabilitation, with the bank now allowing us to pay Bt30,000 a month,” she said.

However, the rehabilitation with the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Bank of Thailandhas in fact been a turning point for Sadhida Garment, because the bank suggested that the company enter the “turnaround” project of the Office of Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion.

Under the project, the company was advised to produce uniforms for private companies, and to embrace the online channel.

The credit term for uniform business is 30 days, much less than for modern traders, and the company now knows its costs and margin with much greater certainty than when dealing with modern trade outlets.

As a result, its cash flow has improved, she said.

The company currently produces uniforms for three automobile companies, and hopes to build sales further as it cannot rely on Platinum Fashion Mall clients returning to previous order levels any time soon.

The company’s founder plans to open a Facebook page as the online channel to promote Sadhida Garment among wholesalers and retailers that are seeking a quality garment supplier.

Although garment-making is a sunset industry, she insists that there will always be a future for businesses that make the right sort of quality clothing and know who their customers are.

With the mass market for clothing facing intense competition from China, it is crucial to make quality products in order to survive, she added.

“When the modern traders want quality apparel on their shelves, we are the choice [they turn to]. Each piece of clothing has a different grade and different pricing. If you see a shirt with a price tag of Bt599 or more at a modern trade store … [it’s most likely] one that we made,” she said.

Ekachai Hospital targets high growth for 3 years after listing

EKACHAI Hospital (EKH) expects to maintain double-digit revenue growth for the next three years, while keeping its ethical-treatment standards high, after floating its shares on the stock market by the end of this month, said hospital director Dr Amnaj Eur-Areemitr.

Speaking at a roadshow at the Stock Exchange of Thailand yesterday, Amnaj said that thanks to the trust the hospital had gained from its patients over the past 10 years, he was confident EKH would continue to grow solidly. The 86-bed hospital’s revenue has grown by an average of 9.79 per cent annually during the last three years, from Bt363.85 million in 2013 to Bt438.61 million last year. It booked 21.56-per-cent growth in the first quarter of this year. Net profit increased from Bt30.64 million in 2013 to Bt32.21 million in 2014, and to Bt48.57 million last year. For the first quarter of 2016, net profit jumped to Bt17.67 million, from Bt6.88 million a year earlier.

Amnaj explained that EKH had to reduce its registered capital to write off accumulated losses in 2015 due to losses from providing services to patients covered under the government’s Social Security Fund, which it decided to quit in 2011.

EKH had incurred a loss in each of the years that it was part of the Social Security scheme because the hospital, which was founded by a group of medical personnel and prominent businesspeople in Samut Sakhon province, decided not to compromise its ethical standards to provide different treatments to Social Security patients, he said.

“Ethics is the big thing. We don’t use money [concerns] to set the rules and criteria in taking care of our patients. Doing business without taking advantage of others is more sustainable,” said Amnaj, an obstetrician by profession. The first quarter’s spectacular profit growth did not come from raising any service fees. EKH, in fact, has not increased its treatment rates for a few years.

“We still have room to increase our margin, since there are still price gaps as we’re selling [our services] at lower prices than other hospitals. But any price increase has to be justified,” said the hospital director.

Somphob Keerasuntonpong, president of Finansia Syrus Securities, financial adviser and lead arranger of EKH’s initial public offering, said the IPO price would be finalised next Wednesday, the same day that it would sign agreements to appoint underwriters and arrangers of the stocks.

Six brokerage houses suggest Bt4-Bt4.5 as target prices of the EKH stocks, reflecting a forward price-to-earnings ratio of about 40 times. The average P/E ratio of listed hospital companies is currently 43 times.

Funds raised from the IPO will be used to build a new children’s hospital building in the same area of the existing hospital, as well as for renovating the existing hospital and parking facilities, and for working capital. The 50-bed children’s hospital building will require an investment of Bt200 million and will be completed in early 2019.

EKH makes about half of its revenue from contractual clients that include life insurers, corporates and government agencies, and the other half from general patients.

By department, the emergency centre contributed 32.73 per cent of total revenue last year, followed by the paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology centres, which provided a combined 23.51-per-cent share, and the general-medicine clinic at 18.23 per cent.

EKH will float 166.8 million shares at Bt0.50 par value, accounting for 27.8 per cent of the total stocks after the IPO. Of the total amount, 10 million stocks will be allocated to directors, management and staff of the hospital.

Petition filed at Bankruptcy court in GMM B rehab case

GMM Grammy yesterday filed a petition at the Central Bankruptcy Court under the rehabilitation case of GMM B and to revoke an agreement under which GMM B grants the Channel 3 operator the right to broadcast 31 live matches of the Uefa Euro 2016 soccer tournament.

The music and entertainment giant yesterday notified the Stock Exchange of Thailand in writing about this move.

In a statement signed by chief financial officer Karnsuda Sansuthi, the company agreed to file a petition to revoke the court order in the business rehabilitation case of GMM B.

On March 18, GMM B filed a petition for business rehabilitation at the Central Bankruptcy Court and the court scheduled a preliminary examination of the petition for September 6.

On April 7, GMM B and Wichai Thongtang, who holds shares in CTH, also filed a petition to request permission from the Central Bankruptcy Court for GMM B to borrow US$5.63 million from Wichai.

GMM B would use the loan to pay Uefa in accordance with the media-rights agreement for Euro 2016 and would use the payment received from Bangkok Entertainment Company and BEC Multimedia, the grantees of the right to broadcast live transmissions, reruns, and programme feeds of sporting events via BEC’s channels, for debt repayment to Wichai first.

The Central Bankruptcy Court granted permission on April 25.

CTH is a major shareholder of GMM B. In addition, according to the agreement on the Euro 2016 Qualifiers, GMM B is required to pay Uefa a licence instalment of $6 million by September 1, and GMM B planned to apply the payment received from BEC to make this payment.

In view of the above, with the permission of the court, GMM B will obtain a loan of $5.63 million from Wichai. When GMM B receives the payment of $7 million from BEC, GMM B will repay the $5.63 million to Wichai. GMM B will have only $1.36 million on hand. As a result, GMM B will then become insolvent and will not have sufficient revolving funds to pay Uefa the $6-million licence fee for the Euro Qualifiers on September 1.

Based on the reasons stated above, if GMM B fails to pay the licence fee for the Euro Qualifiers, Uefa will be entitled to request that the commercial bank that issued a letter of guarantee immediately make the payment to Uefa. If the bank does so, GMM Grammy as the guarantor of GMM B will get the damages.

Central looking to expand Auntie Anne’s outlets in region

BUSINESS EXPANSION

CENTRAL RESTAURANTS Group, the local franchisee of the Auntie Anne’s pretzel chain, is negotiating with US-based Focus Brands International for the right to expand the soft-pretzel shops to emerging markets in the region, especially Vietnam.

The company is conducting a feasibility study on priority expansion markets, which also covers logistics, consumer insights and local regulations.

The recent acquisition of Big C hypermarkets in Vietnam by Central Group will allow other branded business units of the group, including Auntie Anne’s, to be expanded along with Big C’s network in that country.

Nongnapas Rumphoei , assistant vice president of Auntie Anne’s, said yesterday that the company planned to increase its shops in Thailand from 134 currently to 200 in five years.

Investment will be between Bt3 million and Bt5 million per store depending on the size, which will range from 35 to more than 40 square metres.

“We want to more than double our annual revenue from more than Bt800 million targeted for this year to about Bt2 billion in five years,” she said.

The company targets 20-per-cent growth for its Auntie Anne’s business and 149 shops in total this year.

For next year, sales are expected reach Bt1 billion and outlets to 159-169.

“Under the negotiation with our franchiser, it would like us to open Auntie Anne’s in countries without such soft-pretzel shops, such as Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

“It has seen our great potential to expand the business in the AEC based on our local success in Thailand,” she said.

Auntie Anne’s Thailand is the franchisee with the fastest expansion record in Asean.

“We took only 19 years to open 134 Auntie Anne’s shops in the Thai market,” she said.

Auntie Anne’s can be found in the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei.

Auntie Anne’s has been in the Philippines for more than 20 years, but has only 40 stores in the country.

Indonesia also has only four after the first outlet opened in 1995.

“In Vietnam, consumers know the Auntie Anne’s brand. In Laos, people come to Udon Thani and buy pretzels from our Auntie Anne’s shop.

“They become loyal customers of our brand,” he Nongnapas said.

The company sends food trucks to big fairs and events, as well as night markets.

The launch of the mobile channel fits the demand and lifestyles of today’s young consumers, who want convenience and accessibility.

“We have also refreshed the Auntie Anne’s brand in Thailand to be more modern and trendy. The refreshment is based on our consumer-insights survey, showing that Thai consumers demand continuous improvement in three strategic areas, which are product innovation, service, and store ambience.”

The bakery market was worth about Bt8 billion last year and is growing at about 9 per cent per year. Auntie Anne’s ranks third in that market, but controls almost 100 per cent of the pretzel segment.

FACING LIMITED growth in its core business as a distributor of MECS DuPont in Southeast Asia, T Group Holdings (Thailand) under its new-generation executive is diversifying into the entertainment business by importing international shows and concerts for the Thai and Asean markets.

“After two years of learning the entertainment business, we now have the confidence to put more weight on this high-potential business for future growth of the group after witnessing stable growth of less than 5 per cent a year from Crystal Trading, which is a distributor of MECS DuPont technology,” managing director Tuksaya Teeyanaedtanancha said yesterday.

Unlike her father, who established Crystal Trading more than 25 years ago, Tuksaya, 34, is very passionate about the media and entertainment business.

She pursued her dream by earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication arts at Chulalongkorn University.

The company is organising four entertainment events this year.

The Yangon Rock Festival was held in April by Z Bell, a joint venture with Myanmar-based Z Corporation.

“Let It Be: A Celebration of the Music of The Beatles – Part II” will be the second show for this year under a partnership with Kuala Lumpur-based AC Music Entertainment.

The musical event, which will run from July 16-17, is 70 per cent sold out.

For the Thai market, the company is arranging a fan meeting with South Korean superstar Kim Ki-bum on August 21.

The fourth event is still in the planning process.

The company targets Bt120 million in entertainment revenue this year, up from Bt70 million last year. This will represent almost half of group revenue.

Last year’s group revenue came in at about Bt220 million.

The company is planning to organise at least six shows next year in existing and new markets such as Vietnam and Indonesia.

“Vietnam and Indonesia are promising markets for concerts and fan meetings with Korean pop stars. So we hope to bring those shows to both countries next year,” she said.

In the near future, the entertainment business could contribute 60 per cent of total revenue. Within five years, the company aims at a minimum of Bt500 million in revenue.

Organising shows and concerts for targeted groups is a lucrative business, as the profit margin is at least 20 per cent when more than 70 per cent of tickets are booked, Tuksaya said.

Even though the company is shifting its focus more towards music- and entertainment-related activities, its traditional business will remain a key pillar of the Tuksaya’s family business, as it has already travelled to neighbouring countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Hotels in Thailand cautiously embrace digital technology

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Hotels-in-Thailand-cautiously-embrace-digital-tech-30290012.html

Bangkok's skyline is filled with high-rise buildings, many of them housing hotel accommodation.

Bangkok’s skyline is filled with high-rise buildings, many of them housing hotel accommodation.

Thai hotels, which invests heavily in new technology, are urged to align their investment in order to support growth and invest more in their resources or risk missing out on prime growth opportunities.

According to the first Thailand hotel industry report by Grant Thornton in Thailand, 89 per cent of Thai hotels see technology and digital strategies as important, whilst almost 2 of 3 have a digital strategy linked to the overall business plan. Although 91 per cent have confidence in their IT security and privacy, nearly half agree that it is a big concern and hampers further investment. There is also reluctance due to whether or not a fair return on investment can be achieved and how staff capabilities will measure up to the new technology.

“Hotels need to fully integrate their digital strategy and technological improvements into their overall strategic plan. We all have a lot of information about our customers now but the key is having the technology to support the use of that information,” said Andrew McBean, Partner at Grant Thornton and expert in technology, media and telecommunications.

The survey, conducted durign April and May, covered chief executive officers, managing directors, general managers or other senior executives of 66 properties with 4 and 5 star in Thailand.

“The power of technology is phenomenal. There are many new trends available for us to consider, especially in social media. Hotels need to make sure their social media and digital strategy are strongly linked with their business strategy. They need to fully integrate their digital strategy and technological improvements into their overall strategic plan. And hotels need to invest effectively in technology in order to not only attract more customers but to personalise guest experiences.”

Results also show that investment in technology and digital strategy for budgets up to the end of 2016 is still growing among most Thailand properties. 73 per cent are investing more in 2016 than they did in 2015. 56 per cent have their own resource to manage technology and digital strategy, and 35 per cent use both in-house/HQ staff and outsourced vendors. Only 10 per cent were not confident in their digital strategy and these hotels were not part of global chains.

Many were worried about achieving a fair return on their technology investment, with 2 in 3 sharing this opinion. Other concerns included staff having the skills to utilise the technology being introduced. 51 per cent voiced this as a concern with another 48 per cent worried about guest privacy and confidentiality. A mix of slow response times for investment from owners, as well as a fear that the chosen technology would become outdated or more expensive once implemented were of concern, but time is of the essence and those who don’t invest wisely and with some haste may lose opportunities.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is aiming for 12 per cent growth in tourism revenue, bringing it to 2.89 trillion baht in 2017. This is in part due to the economic recovery but also the effective cooperation among tourism-related agencies and private operators.

Hoteliers who can deliver great guest experiences by balancing technology and human touch should see a very positive ROI, the study said.

Michael Marshall, Chief Commercial Officer at Minor Hotel Group, commented, “If used correctly social media will drive revenue. It has also become a big search engine so hotels need to ensure they are maximising all of these platforms. It’s a very easy tool to use and it’s very cost effective, which can be a big concern when digital strategies are being considered. New technologies are appearing every day, just look at Airbnb and how quickly that grew and continues to grow. Voice recognition is also becoming a more valuable tool. We need to be working with all this new technology rather than ignoring it.”

Aline Massart, regional director of Digital Marketing for Accor Hotels, commented, “Hotels started out creating a product and brand but sites like Airbnb allow people to experience a dream by playing to their emotions. Hoteliers need to shift from the product and brand thought process to be more about the customer concept and be at each step of the customer journey. Only 20 per cent of people will mention the hotel name on social media but by using digital tools, such as Local Measure, to tap into that other 80 per cent, hoteliers can create emotion and personalise a customers stay making them feel valued and recognised.”

Debrah Pascoe, senior vice president of Commercial at Onyx Hospitality Group, said that the group is continuously evolving their digital strategy in order to engage customers, expand their reach to new and untapped markets, and showcase products in an engaging and compelling manner. Technology is used to personalise services and inspire repeat business.
