ON A VERY sunny day in March, hundreds of rice farmers in Bangtaen village and nearby areas in Prachin Buri province gathered for a traditional ceremony. They offered food and other items to the rice goddess, celebrating the successful harvest of their first organic crop.

During the ceremony, packed rice was exhibited, along with organic vegetables grown on their fields in line with the participatory guarantee system (PGS) initiated by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM-Organics International) to guarantee consumers of pure organic products.

To be certified, producers must follow 23 guidelines covering land preparation, choices of organic fertilisers and milling methods. All participating farmers must also grow 10 vegetables, aimed at raising their income.

The farmers were highly enthusiastic. Ekasit Kaewnet, a member of one of the 33 households joining the experimental organic drive, mulls expanding his organic rice fields for a second year. Encouraging him is the fact that the organic rice yields were satisfactory in the absence of expensive chemical fertilisers.

Adopting PGS also means more income, as his rice can definitely find buyers, as can his secondary vegetable crop. Organic fertilisers also mean lower cost of production.

//

“The traditional method is costly. Indeed, organic farming is not difficult and it reduces production costs,” said the young farmer.

The first crop suggests that the cost per rai is only Bt1,500-Bt2,000, against Bt4,000 (Bt25,000 per hectare) under traditional methods.

Vilawan Tanwiboonsak, a participating farmer, admitted that the organic farming process was more complicated, but said all farmers gained better health in return from growing organic rice and vegetables.

Chao Thiangthae, the community leader, hopes that the success of the scheme will encourage more households to join it and that the organic plantation areas will expand. In three years, farmers with 50-100 rai of rice fields are expected to adopt the organic method fully, while those who own more than 100 rai should do so in five years.

Chao extended the biggest thanks to TC Pharmaceutical Industries, the owner of the Kratingdaeng energy-drink brand, which approached farmers and offered assistance. The farmers were offered visits to organic rice fields in other provinces and training sessions.

One of the sessions dealt with financial planning. TC Pharmaceutical also offered subsidies for five years: Bt1 per kilogram of paddy rice to farmers and another Bt0.50 per kilo to their community for common purposes.

In the first year, output was 77 tonnes, barely enough for their own consumption.

“When Kratingdaeng first sold this idea, I thought it was a 50:50 chance. All farmers here relied on chemicals to boost yields, given the salty water and dryness. Yet I thought the chance of success should be high given Kratingdaeng’s commitment,” said Chao.

According to Sarawut Yoovidhya, chief executive officer of TC Pharmaceutical Industries, the knowledge shared with these farmers was a result of years of experimentation in provinces including Suphan Buri and Yasothon. The network was extended to Prachin Buri, as it is the home of the company’s only manufacturing facility in Thailand.

Farmers are TC Pharmaceutical’s focus, Sarawut said, as they are the main target customers of the company, which reaps more than Bt100 billion in annual sales revenue.

“We want to return benefits to our main customers, and this will in turn benefit our society and economy,” he said.

The company also sees the importance of food security and food safety for both farmers and consumers. In past years, the company has been involved with several CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities in many provinces, from Chiang Mai in the North to Trang in the South and Chanthaburi in the East, dealing mainly with farming and fishing.

In 2015, the company spent about Bt50 million on CSR activities. Sarawut declined to specify the 2016 budget, saying it depended on project feasibility. Any projects with social and economic benefits that are ready to go will be approved.

“I’m lucky that all my siblings vow to follow in our father’s footsteps. The benefits of the projects come before [money],” he said. Sarawut is a son of the late Chaleo Yoovidhya, the developer of Kratingdaeng.

Reducing poverty is one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Sarawut said the company had applied a number of goals to minimise its operations’ impacts on society and the environment. While the carbon footprint is monitored, the company has recently introduced a scheme to increase the efficiency of water consumption. Reservoirs surround the factory, able to feed water to it for 10 months. This ensures that it will not compete with farmers for water during the dry season.

Sarawut is cheered by the fact that some farmers in Prachin Buri plan to increase their organic-farming areas. In the years ahead, if the output increases and is available for sale, Kratingdaeng is ready to build a buyers’ network or train farmers on adding value to the products.

He envisages drawing help in sharing more knowledge from other organisations and corporates that share a similar philosophy.

Farmers in Yasothon now supply 72 tonnes of organic rice per annum to the factory, which is turned into free lunches for more than 2,000 employees. While the employees save money, they are also aware of the benefits of organic products.

“Marketing will be the integral part of this scheme, as subsidies cannot guarantee its sustainability,” he said. “We need a complete solution. We made this happen but if we’re not in the picture, this scheme should continue in a sustainable way. All farmers should be able to carry it on without our help.”

He was pleased with the first year’s outcome.

“My wish is for this approach to be replicated in other areas of Thailand, to boost the volume of organic products.”

Banpu, Change Fusion cooperate on ‘Champions for Change’

Banpu has collaborated with Change Fusion, a non-profit institute with a key role in driving the Thai social-enterprise industry, to roll out “Banpu Champions for Change (BC4C) as one of Banpu’s CSR programmes.

The 10 social enterprises are made up of interesting ideas and concepts that utilise technology and new media to enhance their businesses and respond to the lifestyles of modern consumers. For example, there are online platforms for people suffering from depression to seek treatment, a critical-thinking course for the underprivileged, learning aids for the blind and hearing-impaired, environmental- and health-friendly packaging products, a mobile application for real-time public-transport schedules, human-waste fertiliser, a zero-waste soy-milk product, and a recreational and productivity hub for senior citizens.

The company’s head of corporate affairs Udomlux Olarn said a lot of young people had the will and ideas to create a social enterprise but sometimes lacked guidance and the means to accelerate their projects and realise their dreams.

Banpu has therefore offered an opportunity for young social entrepreneurs to immerse themselves in a learning process that will help them accomplish their goals, because it believes that learning is the power of change and development. BC4C serves as a platform to provide them with skills, knowledge, financial support and networking opportunities. They will get to learn, solve problems and make the most of their potentials while having Banpu and its mentors as their guides, she said.

Banpu has invited experts from Thailand’s start-up and social-enterprise communities, as well as its programmes’ alumni, as judges and mentors to share their insights and expertise with the young entrepreneurs.

Among them are Pattaraporn “Dao” Yaemla-or, an expert on measuring the impacts of social enterprises, and social marketer Alan “Ton” Archapiraj, a marketing expert and founder of social innovation-based enterprises and inspirational magazines. All of them have proven expertise in the social-enterprise arena.

BC4C participants were given advice and mentoring through workshops that assist in taking ideas and shaping into working business models for sustainable social enterprises with desired impacts.

The 10 selected teams then have three months (April to June) to make the most of Bt50,000. At the end of this three-month period, they will present their social-enterprise progress in a final round to win four places to receive Bt200,000 to fund their businesses.

Childhood memories of ice-cream carts ‘itim Lamoon’

DANUPON Umnouypreechakul, 33, has successfully created his own ice-cream retail business, inspired by his memory of traditional ice-cream carts on the streets when he was a kid.

After graduating from Chulalongkorn University’s faculty of architecture in 2004, Danupon started to learn how to produce home-made ice cream as a hobby. At that time, he worked as an interior designer for a private company.

“I recognised at that time that home-made ice cream could be a good business, as there were few competitors in the marketplace. Iberry was the only major player in the home-made ice-cream segment,” he said.

“I’m quite nationalistic and wish that Thai people [would support] Thai products. I reminded myself of the past when I was young and saw street carts selling coconut ice cream. I recognised that there were many people like me who would love to have street ice-cream carts. What I have to do is to raise this image to the upper-class level,” he said.

Danupon said the first “itim Lamoon” ice-cream kiosk opened in August 2014 at CentralPlaza shopping mall on Rama III Road in Bangkok, after more than a year of research and development to make its products different from rivals in the market, with the focus on taste and hygiene.

“There are many ice-cream products available in the lower-end market. However, few players are in the upper-class segment and there is room in this segment. However, we need to make ice cream that is familiar to individual consumers,” he said.

“Thai consumers can eat phad Thai, a traditional stir-fried rice noodle dish commonly served as a street food and at casual local eateries in Thailand, every day. But they cannot eat spaghetti or Japanese foods on a daily basis,” he said.

Using its own investment, the company now has opened three itim Lamoon ice-cream kiosks, at CentralPlaza Rama III, Maharaj Pier and Mega Bangna. Meanwhile, two franchised outlets have also opened at Sathorn City and Crystal Market on Praditmanutham Road.

Danupon said he had tried to add emotional value to his ice-cream outlets at all touch points, such as the names of the menu items, flavours, toppings, and all the decoration items at the shops. Those elements would remind customers of when they were kids and enjoyed traditional coconut ice cream from street carts. This will help generate good feelings for customers when they visit the stores.

“My dream is to open itim Lamoon ice-cream outlets, whether kiosks or shops, at tourism destinations throughout the Kingdom, including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hua Hin, Cha-am, Pattayaand Phuket. I [would] love to see itim Lamoon recognised by Thais as a cool brand,” Danupon said.

He said the company was in the process of requesting Food and Drug Administration and Good Manufacturing Practices certification so that the products can be exported to neighbouring markets, such as Malaysia.

“I’m negotiating with a potential joint-venture partner in Malaysia on the possibility of exporting ice cream or opening itim Lamoon outlets in Malaysia,” he said.

Danupon said he hoped that his ice-cream business would generate annual sales of Bt30 million within three years. Between 15 and 20 outlets will be opened during the period, of which 60 per cent will be franchised and the rest company-owned.

The company posted Bt8 million in sales last year.

In January, Metro said TCC Holding had acquired its complete operations in Vietnam for 655 million euros (Bt$26.3 billion).

The VCA, in the document, said the request followed a proposal from the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Business Associations that legal compliance of foreign-invested retail firms needed to be checked to ensure healthy competition.

Metro must report the details before|May 30.

According to the VCA, Metro changed its business registration certificate for the ninth time on January 25 to become Mega Market Vietnam.

The VCA said the company was founded and operated in Vietnam, so it must comply with the country’s established laws on competition.

TAKEOVER DEAL

DUTY-FREE operator King Power International Group is set to cash in on tourism growth if it achieves its takeover of Asia Aviation, operator of low-cost airline Thai AirAsia.

The Srivaddhanaprabha family has reportedly spent Bt3 billion buying shares in Asia Aviation, leading it to become the largest shareholder in the airline company with 23 per cent.

Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, chairman and chief executive of King Power Group, hopes that the company’s expansion into the aviation industry will help it gain more business from air travel and increase sales at its duty-free shops.

The negotiation process took a month before the striking of an agreement was reported. However, Thai AirAsia, now says the two companies are still in negotiations.

Tassapon Bijleveld, chief executive of Thai AirAsia, yesterday insisted that no agreement had been reached despite the airline earlier reporting one to the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

The airline said it had an extensive network of destinations in Asean, with code sharing serving seven countries via 15 routes to 12 destinations.

Last year Thai AirAsia carried 14.8 million passengers. The airline expects to serve 16.9 million travellers in 2016 thanks to the acquisition of five new aircraft scheduled to arrive this year. The airline performed well in 2015 in line with higher global demand amid lower fuel prices.

King Power operates shops at the Srivaree Complex in Bangkok, in Pattaya, in Phuket, and at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai airports. The group owns new English Premier League champions Leicester City.

King Power said the Foxes’ fairytale triumph was something it envisaged when it bought the club six years ago.

CAT Telecom plans to provide a fourth-generation wireless broadband service to its My brand 3G-850MHz subscribers by having them roam with the 4G-1800MHz/2.1GHz networks of True Corp, according to Surapant Meknavin, CAT acting president.

He said the My brand service, which currently has only 1 million subscribers, is also seeking marketing partners to promote its brand.

CAT will resubmit the new My business plan to its board soon, after the board rejected approval for the plan this week.

According to a CAT source, CAT has to draw up its My business plan to serve its aim to have My subscribers roam with True’s 4G networks.

True and CAT have been partners in offering the 3G service on the state agency’s 850MHz spectrum.

True subsidiary Real Move has utilised 80 per cent of this 850MHz band to offer its own 3G service, while the other True subsidiary TrueMove H Universal Communication (TUC) has roamed its subscribers on 17 per cent of this spectrum capacity. CAT has used part of the rest of the spectrum capacity to offer the My service.

The same source said that TUC, which is in talks with CAT to pay this spectrum roaming fee to it, has told the state agency that CAT’s My subscribers can roam with True’s 4G 1800MHz/2.1GHz networks as one part of TUC’s roaming-fee payment deal with the agency.

Surapant said the MY service is forecast to have at least an additional 1.5 million to 2 million users within this year.

MINIATURE apples, sheep milk gelato and “activated” muesli are some of the latest products from New Zealand expected to hit Thailand shelves in 2016, according to New Zealand Trade & Enterprise.

The announcement followed New Zealand Food Connection, a B2B trade show series which took place in Bangkok on April 26. More than 50 new product items from New Zealand were offered to Thailand’s top buyers at the private event held by New Zealand Trade & Enterprise.

“New Zealand producers know how to satisfy Thai consumers’ appetite for new and innovative products,” says New Zealand Trade Commissioner to Thailand, Karen Campbell.

“Thai consumers are becoming more focused on health foods, but still enjoy a sense of occasion, which makes New Zealand’s fresh, safe and traceable food an ideal fit for this market,” Campbell said.

New Zealand is one of only two countries to export more than half its total food production. There are 35,000 to 40,000 regulated businesses operating 85,000 food premises in the country.

It is the largest exporter of dairy and eggs to Thailand. It is also a large meat exporter, with trade volumes increasing more than 18 per cent last year.

The two countries have signed a free-trade agreement.

KLeasing Q1 net profit grows 68% amid hope

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/KLeasing-Q1-net-profit-grows-68-amid-hope-30285339.html

KASIKORN LEASING has reported new lending in the first quarter of Bt20.83 billion, while posting net profit of Bt165 million, an increase of 68.84 per cent.

Thawee Teerasoontornwong, KLeasing executive chairman, said new loans were up 37.38 per cent from the first quarter last year. |Of the total, hire-purchase and financial leases amounted to Bt8.04 billion, up 4.52 per cent year on |year, while the remaining Bt12.79 billion was granted under auto-dealer floor plans, an increase of 71.18 per cent.

The company’s outstanding balance totalled Bt88.19 billion at the end of the first quarter, down 1.52 per cent year on year, in line with the automotive market’s sluggish sales, while non-performing loans stood at 1.53 per cent.

The auto industry encountered |a number of risk factors during |the quarter, including the persis-|tent drought, weakening prices |of agricultural products, high ac-cumulated household debt, frail exports due to trade partners’ economic uncertainties, prudent |auto financing, and slower car sales due to increased prices stemming from higher excise tax rates. Therefore, the auto-financing market has suffered an ongoing slowdown.

Turnaround foreseen

However, KLeasing believes prospects are brighter for the second half of the year when the market should grow by 0-2 per cent, under the assumption of an economic turnaround driven by the government’s economic stimulus packages and infrastructure investments.

Kasikorn Research Centre projects that this year’s domestic car sales are likely to contract by 5-10 per cent to about 720,000-760,000 units. However, small sport-utility vehicles, eco-cars and 1-tonne pickup trucks will enjoy a better outlook than other segments.

The small-SUV segment will be driven by demand in Bangkok and its vicinity, as well as other major cities, where residents prefer multipurpose vehicles, while eco-cars will attract buyers through their unchanged or even lower prices in some models under the Eco-car Phase 2 scheme.

The pickup-truck segment will be stimulated by rising private and public investment, plus overall stable prices.

The market for motorcycles with engine capacities of 126cc or higher will grow by around 35 per cent to at least 222,000 new units, an ongoing expansion from last year’s 40-per-cent growth.

Thawee said that despite the current slower growth of household debt at 5.2 per cent per annum, compared with 13.5 per cent five years ago, outstanding household debt remained high at 81.5 per cent of gross domestic product. This continues to put pressure on family spending at different degrees depending on their respective debt burdens.

Households with high spending power, particularly for expensive items like vehicles or houses, are those with monthly incomes of more than Bt30,000.

Household debt is projected to rise further this year, to 83-84 per cent of GDP.

NOW26 sees steep rise in viewership last month

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/NOW26-sees-steep-rise-in-viewership-last-month-30285332.html

TV CHANNEL NOW26 has risen to 11th place in April’s TV ratings thanks to strengths in high-quality documentaries and popular domestic and foreign sports events. NOW 26’s contents have captured viewers’ interest, Duangkamol Chotana, chief executive officer of Nation Multimedia Group, said yesterday.

Nielsen (Thailand)’s survey of digital television viewers in April shows NOW26, one of NMG’s digital TV channels, continuing to attract more viewers.

NOW26’s viewership ranking per minute has also climbed for the sixth month according to Nielsen’s nationwide overall TV audience survey.

NOW26’s viewership rating rose from 13th in March to 11th in April, with an average TV viewer rating of 0.171.

NOW26 has the highest audience base expansion of all digital TV stations, up 35 per cent in April. “NOW26 will continue to be selective in content that will capture viewers’ interests – contemporary trends, lifestyles and preferences, especially excellent documentaries on various topics that are rarely seen on other free TV channels.

“NOW26 has allocated up to six hours a day for documentaries.

“The scheduling of documentaries in prime-time TV viewing hours reflects NOW26’s confidence in the quality of the documentaries.

“NOW26 believes this is what local viewers want, judging from the current growth of documentary viewers we see via online social media channels,” she said.

“NOW26 will continue to strive in expanding the variety of our offerings to the audience, especially in sporting events and exciting lifestyle/adventure programmes.

“By mid-2016, NOW26 will be ready to offer much new, interesting content,” she said.

NOW26 last month joined the Volleyball Association of Thailand to host the NOW26 volleyball academy league for professional volleyball clubs nationwide.

The matches were televised live, including recordings of matches almost daily, which was well received by sports enthusiasts.

This month and in June, the station will continue providing sports event programming for viewers.

Sport top attraction

“Sports continue to capture the interest of viewers, with more viewers, not just for major sporting events like the Olympics, but also at regional levels.

“Since no other digital TV station provides a wide variety of sporting events, NOW26 will continue to provide both local and foreign sporting content to meet increasing interest in sports among Thai youths today and to indirectly contribute towards their development in various sports,” she said.

As for NOW26’s strategy for the second half of this year, the management will emphasise on providing “excellent documentaries, popular sporting events, interesting variety shows and timely penetrating news” to cater to the varied viewer segments nationwide”, she said.
