Grab, a leading superapp in Southeast Asia, is expanding into digital financial services in Thailand with the launch of “PayLater by Grab”.

Worachat Luxkanalode, country head of Grab Thailand, said at a press conference on Wednesday that the objective of this facility is to provide more payment options for all Grab services in one single bill.

Beginning next month, this post-paid service will provide Grab users with enhanced flexibility, seamless experience and extra benefits across mobility as well as deliveries of food, parcel, and on-demand everyday goods, he said.

“To provide a better experience to our users, we have introduced ‘PayLater by Grab’, starting with the launch of the post-paid service to enable Grab users to pay for all services in one single bill each month,” Worachat said.

The move follows the increasing popularity of digital commerce in the past few years, which have given rise to new digital financial services that can better serve customers’ needs.

According to a report by e-Conomy SEA 2022, the total transaction volume of digital payment in Thailand is expected to reach US$113 billion in 2022 and grow by 12% within 2025. One of the fastest-growing services is the “Buy Now, Pay Later” service, which allows customers to manage their expenses more conveniently.

Worachat pointed out that today, almost two-thirds of Grab users choose cashless payment methods, including GrabPay Wallet and debit/credit cards.

He added that the post-paid service under PayLater by Grab has three key advantages:

● Flexibility — users can combine all transactions into one single bill and pay for it the following month;
 Seamless — users can choose the post-paid method before confirming an order across all Grab service applications;
● Extra points — users can earn up to two GrabRewards points for every 16 baht spent on Grab.

Worachat said that the launch of PayLater by Grab is part of the company’s efforts to respond to consumer behaviour by providing financial liquidity to Grab users.

He vowed to continue expanding its service offerings in the future to meet the various digital payment needs of both users and partners.

Metaverse offers Thai e-commerce industry new, interesting challenges

For Thailand’s growing e-commerce industry, the metaverse is a new chapter. In the 22nd episode of Business Story, Kulthirath Pakawachkrilers, president of the Thai E-Commerce Association, believes e-commerce in Thailand will grow five-fold in the next three years.

Kulthirath said that we can expect more challenges next year, as consumer behaviour will continue changing, data security threats will keep rising and boundaries between physical and digital shopping will continue to blur.

Kulthirath Pakawachkrilers, president of the Thai E-Commerce Association, Kulthirath Pakawachkrilers, president of the Thai E-Commerce Association,

“However, businesses that keep up with these trends will be able to seize opportunities to boost revenue and sales,” she added.

What is your working background?

I worked for and consulted with a lot of enterprises, such as Lazada, Big C Super Center, and Sephora Online. I have expertise in e-commerce, digital marketing, and IT. I am also president of the Thai E-Commerce Association.

What is your future direction?

I would like my company to help expand the business across the border to China and globally. We can see so many opportunities. We try to settle them legally in the countries where they would like to go. We will help and partner until the business reaches its goals.

Do you think Thailand can be the hub of technology in the future?

Yes, I still hope.

How does e-commerce integrate with the organization?

I believe that any business can go e-commerce and conduct online transactions. They either pay now or pay later.

Firstly, you have to make sure the platform application is totally ready. You cannot give the bud time. Secondly, you need to sell the products in the invisible store. You must ensure that your content, image, hashtag, and mechanism allow people to find your products.

Also, if the price is too high, it must be justified.Who will purchase them? You must have the promotion. You can’t be lazy with e-commerce by dedicating teams to it right away.

“How tall is the building, and how big is the e-commerce platform?” “You need to invest in people,” she said.

Winona Feminine, which specialises in feminine cleansing products, is collaborating with the leading pharmacy chain Bangkok Drugstore to expand the reach of its new Winona Probio supplement.

Nopparat Suksaranludee, the founder of Winona Feminine, told the press on Tuesday that the probiotic was the result of more than 20 years of research and had been bred especially to match the physical conditions of Thai women.

She added that Winona Probio had won a very positive response when it was launched in May via the Winona Feminine website, prompting her to start seeking distribution partners.

“Our partners need to be experts who know how to store the product properly and can explain the usage correctly. Winona Probio needs to be stored in cold temperatures to keep the bacteria alive,” Nopparat explained.

She said that though most Thai women are aware of the benefits of probiotics, such as better immunity and prevention of some vaginal infections, most probiotics sold locally are imported.

However, she said, upon meeting researchers from the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) as part of a Thailand Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences project, she learned of Thailand’s first probiotic strain – the Lactobacillus paracasei MSMC39-1.

Gut unhappy? There’s now a probiotic designed specifically for Thais

She explained that this probiotic bacteria had been bred specifically to work effectively on Thai digestive systems, which makes it very effective with few side effects.

“We already have some cleansers that help provide immediate relief for feminine problems, but Winona Probio prevents these problems from occurring in the first place,” she said.

Probiotics are often described as “good” or “friendly” bacteria that help restore the natural balance in the digestive system when it has been disrupted by an illness or treatment.

She added that her company is working with Biotec to develop a second probiotic breed that can help reduce cholesterol, boost antioxidants and kickstart the metabolism.

“This should be released by the end of this year,” she said.

Winona Feminine was founded in September 2016 with the goal of producing and developing personal care and cosmetics products, with a special focus on feminine hygiene.

Though most of the company’s products are sold locally, it has started entering the export market.

Nopparat said she plans to start selling Winona Probio in Asean countries, namely Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Brunei, in a year.

She said the export of Winona Probio will be limited to Southeast Asia because these countries share similar cuisines, weather and lifestyles.

However, she said, the cleansing products will be targeted at a wider market and sold in countries like China, South Africa, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates and Oman to name a few.

BOI roadshow in Japan aims to draw investors to EEC

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022

The Board of Investment (BOI) will hold a roadshow in Japan next week to promote investments in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), the board said on Wednesday.

BOI secretary-general Narit Therdsteerasukdi said the roadshow would be held from Monday to Wednesday with cooperation from the Eastern Economic Corridor Office and the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand.

During the roadshow, representatives of the three agencies will meet and discuss with representatives of key state and private agencies in Japan, including the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro), and the Organisation for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, Narit said.

He said the Thai delegation would also meet representatives of the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren), the Kansai Economic Federation and the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

During the meeting and consultation, the Thai delegation would promote investments of targeted industries in Thailand, Narit added.

He said the BOI would also hold two seminars in Tokyo and Osaka under the title “Thailand Investment Promotion Policy: New Economy, New Opportunities”.

During the seminars, the BOI would present the new investment promotion measures, the latest development of the EEC and the readiness of industrial estates in Thailand for Japanese investors.

“This trip will be a cooperative venture of agencies in charge of promoting investments in the country,” Narit said.

“We selected Japan as the first country for the roadshow because Japanese investors are the largest groups of foreign investors in the kingdom.

“We aim to invite them to invest in targeted industries, such as electric vehicles, electronics, biological technology, and clean energy. Japan has the expertise for these industries.”

He added that the roadshow would also encourage Japanese investors to set up research and development bases and regional offices in Thailand.

BOI statistics from 2017 to 2022 show that Japanese investors filed applications for investment privileges for 1,371 projects worth 474.79 billion baht. Most of the projects are in auto and auto parts, manufacturing of electric and electronic appliances, and chemical products.

Govt revenue for fiscal year is THB151 bn higher than projected

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022

The real revenue collected by government agencies during Fiscal Year 2022 amounted to 151 billion baht more than projected, a government spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

Ratchada Thanadirek said the revenue for the fiscal year, which ended on September 30, was projected at 2.4 trillion baht but government agencies collected and handed over a total of 2.55 trillion baht to the Finance Ministry.

Ratchada said government agencies managed to collect higher than projected revenue because of increased tax collection from the sale of goods and services, while state enterprises also generated more income.

She said the agencies projected they would borrow about 700 billion during the fiscal year but the actual amount stood at 652.5 billion.

For the fiscal year, the government projected total spending of 3.1 trillion, but actual spending stood at 2.9 trillion, or 8.71 billion baht lower. The actual spending amount excluded 190.5 billion set aside for late reimbursements by government agencies.

Ratchada said the impact from the Covid-19 pandemic prompted government agencies to spend their budgets within the time frames of their projects.

As for the current account, government revenue during the fiscal year was 3.2 trillion baht, while spending was 3.14 trillion, with a surplus of 55.7 billion baht.

The spokeswoman said the government enjoyed a surplus current account because agencies received higher revenue than projected, including personal income tax and value-added tax as well as import and export taxes.

During the weekly Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Ratchada said, the Cabinet approved six frameworks for the Budget Bureau to prepare for the 2024 fiscal year budget.

Fiscal Year 2024 will see money mainly going for:

– Security

– Strengthening competitiveness

– Human resources development

– Promoting social equality

– Boosting an environmentally friendly quality of life

– Bureaucratic development.

Domestic tourism flying high, expected to surpass pre-Covid level

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expects Thai tourists to travel across provinces more than before the Covid crisis in 2019.

TAT deputy governor for Domestic Marketing Thapanee Kiatphaibool said on Wednesday that Thai tourists took 200 million trips across provinces by the end of October this year compared to 222 million for the year before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019.

“The number of trips across provinces was higher than the target of 160 million,” she said.

Domestic tourism flying high, expected to surpass pre-Covid level

Thapanee also expects Thai tourists to generate 800 billion baht, higher than the targeted 656 billion baht, on rising domestic family travel and conferences.

She said domestic airlines have increased flights to many areas, especially Chiang Mai, Phuket and Songkhla’s Hat Yai district, as well as flights from overseas to Thailand.

“The passenger load factor has increased 75-80%,” Thapanee said.

Domestic tourism flying high, expected to surpass pre-Covid level

Up to 150,000 flight tickets of a total 500,000 under the “Flying Across Thailand” project by TAT and domestic airlines have already been snapped up, she said.

“Another 150,000 tickets would be sold during the remainder of the year,” she added.

Thai, Vietnamese retailers sign pact to boost trade

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022

The Thai Retailers Association (TRA) and the Association of Vietnam Retailers (AVR) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen trade between the two countries.

“This MoU aims to boost sales of small and medium enterprises [SMEs],” TRA president Yon Pokesap said on Tuesday.

The agreement is also in line with the five pacts signed by the Thai and Vietnamese governments during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, he said.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc witnessed the signing of the five documents – the Plan of Action on Implementing the Thailand-Vietnam Strengthened Strategic Partnership 2022-2027; an agreement on mutual judicial assistance between Thailand and Vietnam; the forging of Thailand’s Khon Kaen and Vietnam’s Da Nang as sister cities; an MoU between the Thai Board of Trade and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and a bilateral trade and investment facilitation agreement between the Export-Import Bank of Thailand and Vietnam’s Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade (Vietcombank).

Thai, Vietnamese retailers sign pact to boost trade

The MoU between the TRA and the AVR focuses on promoting trade and investment between Thailand and Vietnam in order to boost economic growth and the trade value between the two countries to US$25 billion (902.56 billion baht) by 2025, Yon explained.

“Meanwhile, this MoU also focuses on boosting the potential of up to 3 million SMEs in Thailand and Vietnam’s retail and service sectors so they can become the main engine for development of products and innovation,” he said.

The MoU promotes trade and investment opportunities via an exchange of knowledge, trade facilitation and business matching for sustainable growth, Yon said.

“It also helps business operators achieve net-zero carbon emissions by promoting eco-friendly products and waste and energy reduction,” he added.

Thai, Vietnamese retailers sign pact to boost trade

The General Statistics Office of Vietnam said the country’s retail sales and services as of October was 486.40 billion dong (704.57 million baht), up 2 per cent month on month and 17% year on year.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade, meanwhile, said the country’s retail sector is expected to expand from the current $142 billion to $350 billion in 2025, accounting for 59% of Vietnam’s gross domestic product.

The ministry also expected Vietnam’s retail sector this year to grow by 20% year on year on rising demand, especially during Vietnamese New Year during the latter part of January 2023.

“Vietnam’s retail sector would also gain positive sentiment from a number of festivals in the latter part of this year, such as Black Friday and Christmas,” the ministry added.
