GSB launches ‘Samui Model’ to support locals hit hard by Covid-19 crisis

Government Savings Bank (GSB) has launched its “Samui Model” project, bringing together more than 500 people from its management team, credit committee and GSB staff to the Koh Samui area of Surat Thani province to provide immediate assistance.

The project is focusing on approvals for urgent loans in special cases after Koh Samui’s tourism economy collapsed because of the virus situation.

GSB would also provide funds and sustenance supplies to people in need, the bank said.

Vocational training would be offered to the underprivileged, GSB said.

Free booth space also would be given to Samui local merchants and street food vendors, expecting to encourage money circulation of at least Bt1 billion to support the economy, and help the people of Samui face this difficult time, GSB said.

All activities will be held on December 8-9 at Central Festival Samui Shopping Centre in Koh Samui district.

GSB director Vithai Rattanakorn said that even though the Covid-19 outbreak in Thailand had been contained, the international community was still facing a crisis and the disease was still out of control. Being discreet in accepting foreign tourists is the only way to prevent a second wave of the pandemic in the country, Vithai said.

The lack of foreign tourists has severely impacted the Thai economy, especially areas that rely mainly on tourism, such as Koh Samui which is now desolate. Tourism-related businesses have closed, operators have suffered losses and unemployed workers have moved back to their hometowns. Local people lack incomes to support their families.

To alleviate the suffering of the people of Samui, GSB’s “Samui Model” project was conceived by the executives and employees of the bank, both from the centre and region 16. More than 500 people spent more than two months to look into the problems and help the villagers, the bank said. The project was conceived as an urgent measure for villagers to receive immediate assistance.

He added that on December 8-9, the credit committee from GSB’s headquarters, along with executives and employees, would be in the Koh Samui area to consider and approve special credit for entrepreneurs and the public so that loans could be disbursed, including consultation on debt management for existing credit customers of the bank, and providing assistance to resolve immediate problems, such as providing scholarships to children whose parents have suffered, providing capital for self-sufficient income generation either through funding or providing equipment for chicken farms, fertilizer and plant seeds, offering vocational training and livestock supply such as eggs and dried fish from locals etc.

The event will additionally open a street food and local products space, inviting shoppers to come and sell their products without charging rents for booths. Participants can win many prizes, such as store discounts, movie tickets, or supercentre discount cards. The highlight of the event is loan applicants or customers at the event who pay through the MyMo app will receive Ai Kai piggy bank of Wat Chedi Temple as a souvenir.

GSB said it has also arranged many other fun activities.

The “GSB Samui Model” is an ambitious project launched to create a positive impact in line with our stance as a social bank, GSB said.

The event will be held on December 8-9, at Central Festival Samui Shopping Centre, in Koh Samui district.

Dusit International, one of Thailand’s leading hotel and property development companies, has announced that it plans to counter the impact of Covid-19 by introducing three strategic pillars – collaboration, integration and contribution.

Under this strategy, Dusit has partnered with Local Alike, an online social enterprise dedicated to the sustainable development of Thai rural communities through responsible tourism to offer a range of tours for young families seeking a more meaningful experience during their stay.

Experiences offered under the Dusit Local Explorer scheme will have participants immerse themselves in the lives, culture and cuisine of indigenous communities around Thailand, such as the Tai Lue hill tribe in Chiang Mai and lobster-farming communities in Phuket.

To develop the partnership further, Dusit plans to provide hospitality and service training for various communities so they can enhance their skills and learn how to sustainably welcome visitors.

Volunteers will come from Dusit Hotels & Resorts as well as Dusit Hospitality Education.

Dusit will also support Local Alike’s other initiatives, including Local Aroi, which aims to develop local cuisines to fine dining standards through the creation of special set menus that celebrate stories, techniques, and sustainable ingredients behind renowned local dishes; and Local Alot, which supports the sustainable production of handcrafted goods.

“Consumer behaviour has changed dramatically during Covid-19 and it’s essential that we change our strategy and pivot our operations to meet their needs as much as possible,” said Suphajee Suthumpun, group CEO for Dusit International.

The Dusit Local Explorer programme is now available at Dusit properties in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Khao Yai, Krabi, Pattaya, and Phuket.

To cater to the luxury segment, Dusit has also teamed up with bespoke tour providers in Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Pattaya and Phuket to provide exclusive end-to-end excursions packaged as the Ultimate Dusit Experience.

Thai Airways International Plc (THAI) is suspending its joint investment plan for a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at U-Tapao Airport until the aviation sector recovers, said THAI’s acting president Chansin Treenuchagron on Monday.

He said that only an aerospace company or airline would be keen on investing in the project.

The global aviation industry is currently struggling under the impact of Covid-19.

Asked if THAI would reapproach Airbus SAS to become a partner, he said the carrier was in talks with all potential parties.

Airbus SAS passed the bidding for the MRO but pulled out of the project, failing to deliver its proposal by this year’s April 20 deadline. THAI reasoned that Airbus was not in a position to join the venture after being hit by the Covid-19 impact.

THAI is currently focused on developing a business rehabilitation plan under the bankruptcy court and is in the process producing a final figure for its debt.

The airline is expected to launch another early retirement programme next year to cut costs, said Chansin. THAI currently has about 19,000 employees.

U.S. stocks climbed as investors piled into companies that will benefit most from a return to normal economic activity. Tech shares lagged behind, while gold slumped.

The S&P 500 briefly extended gains on news that Joe Biden will nominate former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen to be Treasury Secretary. She recently said the recovery will be uneven and lackluster if Congress doesn’t spend more to fight unemployment and keep small businesses afloat.

“The market would view Janet Yellen’s appointment as market-friendly. At the very least, she is likely to work well with Chair Powell,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Independent Advisor Alliance.

The Nasdaq 100 was little changed, while the Russell 2000 of smaller companies jumped almost 2%. AstraZeneca Plc became the latest firm to deliver positive vaccine developments, bolstering demand for cruise-line operators and airlines. Small caps are up about 18% in November, on track for the best month ever.

Vaccine successes lately have added to a risk-on mood in markets and investors have snapped up assets that could benefit from the end of lockdowns and travel restrictions even as the virus rages across the nation. Investors have also started to anticipate Congress will again deliver a spending bill to stave off the economic effects of new restrictions aimed at slowing the virus.

“In the short-term, anything is possible and from a humanitarian perspective it is awful that the people who currently need the most help are not getting it,” said Jonathan Boyar, managing director at Boyar Value Group. “But with multiple viable vaccines on the horizon, I think the market will largely look through the horrible headlines. There certainly, however, will be some fits and starts along the way.”

U.S. vaccinations against covid-19 will “hopefully” start in less than three weeks, said Moncef Slaoui, head of the government’s Operation Warp Speed, on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. An advisory panel of the Food and Drug Administration is meeting on Dec. 10 to discuss emergency use authorizations.

These are the main moves in markets:

The Cabinet on Monday approved in principle the establishment of an institute for research and development of railway track systems, said government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri.

The institute will be set up as a public organisation under the Transport Ministry.

It will determine strategy and propose policies for development of rail track systems, and set directions for R&D, human resource development and technology transfer.

The aim was to reduce Thailand’s reliance on foreign technology, said the spokesman.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) rose back above 1,400 points on Monday after investors were buoyed by Standard & Poor (S&P)’s decision to keep Thailand’s sovereign credit rating at BBB+, Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow said on Monday.

Improvement in the domestic political situation had also boosted the SET, he said, adding that investors would gain more confidence if the turmoil ends peacefully.

The SET Index closed at 1,420.43 on Monday, up 31.09 points or 2.24 per cent. Total transactions amounted to Bt105 billion with an index high of 1,422.43 and a low of 1,395.58.

However, he said the government should postpone reducing the Covid-19 self-isolation period from 14 days to 10 days until the end of this year because of the surge in cases abroad.

Thais should compensate for the lack of foreign tourists by travelling more within the country, he added.

Thailand’s SuperRich Currency Exchange Co Ltd expects to launch an overseas money transfer service in the second quarter next year, said its chief executive officer Piya Tantivechayanon.

The move to seek new revenue sources comes in response to the decline in foreign tourist numbers amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The new service will be available via SuperRich branches and its mobile application and e-wallet. The company said it would also expand its partnerships to add more privileges and benefits for customers.

The new service is expected to boost revenue by 5 to 10 per cent.

For the remainder of this year, the company is focusing on cost reductions.

SuperRich says it is currently exchanging Bt600 million-Bt900 million per month and expects to maintain that level until the end of this year.

Khon Kaen Sugar Industry Pcl (KSL) expects sales next year to rise about 10 per cent, driven by a 20 per cent increase in the sugar price from 13-14 cents to 16-17 cents per pound.

KSL vice president Chalush Chinthammit predicts Thai sugarcane production in 2021 will increase by 40-50 per cent after heavy rainfall over past few months, spurring a rise in exports.

He also forecast the company’s ethanol business will improve next year as the ethanol price is expected to increase to Bt25-Bt26 per litre from Bt22 -Bt23 this year.

“We expect this year’s ethanol sales to drop by 5-6 per cent [YOY] due to the Covid-19 impact on fuel demand. However, the demand for medical-grade ethanol has increased after the government launched measures to promote purchase of ethanol for production of hand sanitiser and disinfectants,” he said. Ethanol producers will ask the government to extend measures after they expire at the end of this year, he added.

Chalush estimates performance of the company’s electrical business will remain steady next year, as there are no plans to expand the business. The company’s 250-megawatt generating capacity would be used to feed sugarcane mills as this was more cost-effective than selling to the government.

The company had no plans to invest in the government’s community-based power plant programme, since it would bring low returns amid difficulties in supplying the plants, he said.

National oil and gas conglomerate PTT aims to set up as many as 100 charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) within 2021.

PTT has closely monitored the interest in EVs and has studied the feasibility of the investment with its expert partner, PTT’s chief financial officer Pannalin Mahawongtikul said.

She said that though there are not that many EVs in Thailand, PTT wants to be prepared and upgrade existing technology so it will only take about 15 to 20 minutes to charge a vehicle.

PTT currently has about 30 charging stations.

The conglomerate is also attaching importance to energy storage technology, because once EV become commonplace, efficient storage will be crucial for growth.
