Markets wrap: Stocks post biggest weekly increase since July

U.S. stocks rallied, with the S&P 500 posting its biggest weekly increase since July, as traders bet lawmakers are moving closer to providing more fiscal stimulus. Treasury yields were mostly flat and the dollar slipped.

The benchmark equity gauge rose for a third day with President Donald Trump saying he now wants an even bigger package than what Democrats offered. For the week, the index finished up 3.8%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 jumped 1.5% on Friday, with chip maker Xilinx Inc. leaping on a report it’s in advanced talks for a $30 billion takeover by rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

“We’ve had this whipsaw around wondering if there will be more fiscal stimulus, which I think we desperately need to keep the economy rolling,” said Ron Temple, head of U.S. equity at Lazard Asset Management LLC.

European stocks rose as a host of companies raised outlooks, from Denmark’s drugmaker Novo Nordisk A/S to German online clothing retailer Zalando SE. Stocks fell in Spain, where the government’s cabinet met to declare a state of emergency for Madrid to control Covid-19. Italy’s 10-year bond yield fell a record low.

Investors ended a volatile week with a risk-on attitude. With Trump recuperating from Covid-19 in the final stretch of the election campaign, they’re increasingly betting a Joe Biden victory is likely. Speculation is moving now to whether Democrats will sweep Congress too and then enact massive stimulus.

“There’s also the possibly you could see a Democratic sweep in the election and that raises the prospects for higher taxes, which would be a negative, but also for really pronounced stimulus and that could take some of the more extreme risks off the table,” said Giorgio Caputo, senior fund manager at J O Hambro Capital Management

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin headed into talks with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday carrying a White House offer of $1.8 trillion for economic stimulus, according to people familiar with the matter. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said earlier it was unlikely an agreement could be reached in Congress before the election.

Elsewhere, Vanguard Group Inc. returned about $21 billion in managed assets to government clients in China as part of a global shift to focus on low-cost funds for individual investors, according to people familiar with the matter.

Oil in New York edged lower with Hurricane Delta’s top sustained winds weakening as the storm approached the U.S. Gulf Coast.

IRPC researching melt-blown fabric to make country self-reliant for face mask production

IRPC Pcl is now researching on specialised plastic bead which is used to manufacture melt-blown fabric, a key component that acts as air filter in sanitary facemasks, company president and chief executive officer Noppadol Pinsupa said.

“Currently only a few countries are capable of manufacturing melt-blown fabric, such as China, South Korea and Japan, while no country in Asean can do it,” he said. “If we succeed, Thailand could be the first country in the region capable of making sanitary face masks using all domestic components. We expect the research to be complete by early next year.”

“Melt-blown fabric is currently in high demand worldwide due to the Covid-19 outbreak, which should have an impact in several countries for years to come. This is therefore a good opportunity for IRPC to expand into medical equipment markets at the global level,” he added.

Noppadol Pinsupa

The company is also researching on ‘Kleanteq Mask’, or sanitary face mask capable of killing germs and preventing the building up of static electricity, which causes dust particles to stick to the mask.

“The Kleanteq Mask can be washed for reuse up to 10 times and is highly resistant against water damage,” he said. “We coat the fabric with graphene particle that would help kill the bacteria by blocking their cell wall. It can also block 70 per cent of 0.1 micron dust particle and 100 per cent of 2.5 micron particle [PM 2.5] without causing respiratory fatigue, making it perfect for protection against air pollution.”

IRPC is also a manufacturer of polypropylene spunbond fabric, which is used to produce PPE [Personal Protective Equipment] suit, a vital equipment for medical professionals working with Covid-19 patients, as well as medical grade plastic beads for the manufacture of IV wire, syringe, saline bag and eye cover. “These products are single-use and therefore are in constant high demand both domestically and globally. IRPC has greatly helped reduce the reliance on foreign manufacturers of these vital products,” added Noppadol.

IRPC recently won the second prize for best social and environmental innovation from the National Innovation Day 2020, for its research on polypropylene copolymer 3340H, a plastic bead used in the manufacture of prosthetic legs for disabled persons. It has been working with Prostheses Foundation of HRH the Princess Mother.

“Our new prosthetic leg is smooth, flexible and transparent, which enables doctors to see the contact surface with patient’s skin and therefore adjust the leg accordingly for a better fit,” he said. “This plastic innovation essentially helps disabled persons to have a better quality of life.”

Thailand is speeding up talks in order to reach free trade agreements (FTAs) with several territories next year, the Trade Negotiations Department said on Friday.

The department will push hard to complete separate FTAs with Turkey, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, said its director general Auramon Supthaweethum.

It will also press for revision of Asean free trade agreements with China, with India, with South Korea and with Australia-New Zealand, to open their markets to a wider range of Thai goods.

Meanwhile the department is planning to initiate FTA talks with other key economies, including the UK. A study of impacts of a Thailand-UK FTA is expected to be finished early next year.

A completed study on impacts of a Thailand-European Union FTA will be put to the Cabinet in December, Auramon added.

The EU has already signed free trade deals with Singapore and Vietnam and is in talks for a deal with Indonesia. It has suspended talks with Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. Talks with Thailand began in 2013 but were suspended in 2014 following the military coup.

Thailand has so far signed 13 FTAs with 18 countries – Asean partners, China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Peru.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index closed at 1,267.14 on Friday, down 7.69 points or 0.60 per cent. Total transactions amounted to Bt51 billion with an index high of 1,280.81 and a low of 1,264.24.

In the morning session, a Krungsri Securities analyst expected the day’s index to fluctuate between 1,265 and 1,285 despite the rising oil price and progress in US economic stimulus measures.

The analyst warned of fallout from domestic anti-government protests on October 14.

“Investors should beware of mass sell-offs to mitigate risks from the political rally [in Bangkok] next week, as it would pressure the index,” he said.

The 10 stocks with the highest trade value today were NRF, NER, TASCO, PTT, PTTEP, AOT, KBANK, CPF, IVL and MINT.

As of 4.30pm, the price of oil dropped by US$0.46 or 1.12 per cent to $40.73 per barrel, while gold rose by $24.20 or 1.28 per cent, to $1,919.30 per ounce.

Other Asian indices were mixed:

Japan’s Nikkei Index closed at 23,619.69, down 27.38 points or 0.12 per cent.

China’s Shang Hai SE Composite Index closed at 3,272.08, up 54.02 points or 1.68 per cent, while the Shenzhen SE Component Index closed at 13,289.26, up 381.81 points or 2.96 per cent.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index closed at 24,119.13, down 74.22 points or 0.31 per cent.

South Korea’s KOSPI Index was closed for Hangul Day, while Taiwan’s TAIEX Index was closed for National Day.

Trading on Thai bourse normal after new rule on short sales, says SET chief

EconOct 09. 2020

By The Nation

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) has confirmed that the volume of short sales was normal after implementing the zero-plus-tick rule, while promising to monitor trading closely.

Previously, the SET used the uptick rule that allowed investors to engage in short-selling only when the share price was higher than the latest trading price, to mitigate market volatility. It announced recently that from October 1 onwards, it would use the old zero-plus-tick rule, which enables investors to engage in short-selling when the share price is higher or equal to the latest trading price.

SET president Pakorn Peetathawatchai said there was no change in investor behaviour, as the volume of short sales in the past eight days was 1-4 per cent from 4-8 per cent when uptick rules were in effect.

However, he said the SET would closely monitor investor behaviour and the volume of short sales to check if there were any abnormalities.

“Also, the SET would monitor the stock market situation closely because of the US presidential election next month, which may impact global stock indices,” he said.

He expected the market capitalisation of initial public offering (IPO) shares this year to hit the target although many large companies have postponed their issues.

“We believe that PTT Oil and Retail Business [PTTOR]’s move to postpone its IPO to next year was not due to the stock market situation, because several investors would be interested in buying PTTOR shares and many companies are offering IPO shares in the stock market,” he said.

“However, we want more large, medium, and small companies to list on the stock market although the market is not currently on the upside, because there are sufficient positive sentiments to boost investment.”

The president of the Market for Alternative Investment (mai), Prapan Charoenprawatt, said some companies had postponed their offerings in the market which may be due to Covid-19’s impact on their financial budget.

“Since the beginning of this year, six companies have been listed on the MAI, while expecting that up to five companies were ready to raise funds in the market,” he said.

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) assistant secretary-general Jomkwan Kongsakul said approximately 30 companies were waiting to launch IPOs, adding that medium and small companies had postponed their offerings as well.

“The postponement of IPOs may be due to market volatility and companies’ intention to set up an IPO share price. However, companies must inform the SEC if they want to update their filing information,” she said.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index fell by 0.49 points, or 0.04 per cent, to 1,274.34 in the morning session on Friday.

An analyst at Krungsri Securities expected the index to fluctuate between 1,265 and 1,285 despite the rise in oil price and ongoing progress in the US economic stimulus measures.

“Investors should beware of mass sell-offs of shares to mitigate risks from the political rally next week, as it would pressure the index,” he said.

As an investment strategy, he recommended that investors buy:

▪︎ PTTEP, TOP and PTTGC that will benefit from rising oil price.

▪︎ CRC, HMPRO, JMART, COM7, KTC, CENTEL and MINT that will benefit from the government’s “Shop Dee Mee Kuen” (Shop and Payback) scheme.

▪︎ TU, PLANB, STGT, COM7, ASIAN and CBG whose third-quarter performance is expected to grow.

The SET Index closed at 1,274 on Thursday, up 11.12 points or 0.88 per cent, while transactions amounted to Bt56 billion in response to the news of US President Donald Trump’s U-turn on stimulus measures and Thailand’s Centre for Economic Situation Administration approving the “Shop Dee Mee Kuen” (Shop and Payback) scheme to stimulate consumer spending.

The price of gold rose by Bt200 per baht weight in morning trade on Friday, the Gold Traders Association reported.

As of 9.21am, the buying price of a gold bar was Bt28,000 per baht weight and selling price Bt28,100, while gold ornaments were priced at Bt27,500.24 and Bt28,600, respectively.

At close on Thursday, the buying price of a gold bar was Bt27,800 per baht weight and selling price Bt27,900, while gold ornaments were Bt27,303.16 and Bt28,400, respectively.

Spot gold price moved to US$1,905 (Bt59,278) per ounce on Friday morning after the price rose by $43 to $1,895.1 per ounce at Thursday’s close in response to ongoing progress of US economic stimulus measures after US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that the White House and the Democrats could reach an agreement to roll out these measures.

Lack of middlemen helps property marketplace offer attractive discounts

Oct 09. 2020

By THE NATION

Thailand’s first offline and online property marketplace, Property Discount Center (propertydiscountcenter.com), was launched on October 1 in Phuket.

This site links buyers and sellers directly without middlemen.

“We are a property marketplace, not an agency or broker. You can place an ad for your condo, villa, business or even boat with us and we can share the info with buyers from across the world. Our advertising network covers Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, China, Russia and Europe,” said Stuart Coakley, director of the business said.

“We have over 10 years of experience successfully facilitating sales of property online. Foreign buyers do not have to come to Thailand, all the work can be done without them being present. This is important at a time when investors want to invest, but can’t visit due to Covid-19 restrictions.”

Normally developers and property owners spend 20 to 35 per cent of their selling price on advertisement, marketing, commissions, rental of boots, salaries and discounts sought by buyers, he said.

“But we use another format. Instead of spending on all this, we offer buyers an attractive discount so both parties win,” he said.

He added that during these challenging times, it’s important to find new ways to attract international investors and increase the sale of real estate in Thailand.

Huawei unveils ‘cloud+AI+IoT synergy’ trend, to revolutionise Thai smart business

Oct 08. 2020Abel Deng, chief executive officer of Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co Ltd Abel Deng, chief executive officer of Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co Ltd

By The Nation

Huawei has launched a synergy-based ecosystem between the cloud, artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) innovations to help reduce costs, improve efficiency and boost service quality of Thai businesses.

Such ecosystems will pave the way for the new fully ‘smart’ era for every industry nationwide, the company said, adding, Huawei believes that all businesses and industries will adapt to using cloud services within five years. Cloud service providers will, therefore, need to focus their priority on the issues of data security, communication speed, and the cloud ecosystem.

Abel Deng, chief executive officer of Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co Ltd, illustrates how the cloud, AI and IoT technologies can be integrated and utilised by the Thai business sector, saying: “The joint efforts between the public and private sector to drive technological development is the key reason why Thailand has become one of the leaders in technological innovation adoption in Asean.”

“Such collaboration is seen in policies like the Thailand 4.0 strategy from the Thai government, while the private sector has consistently pushed the boundaries through the construction of innovative communication networks, as well as new service offerings for Thai users,” Abel.said.

“Thailand is also a key market for Huawei, where we offer all four business categories of our products and services: Carrier, enterprise, consumers and cloud and AI. With such a comprehensive product portfolio, Huawei will be able to deliver a complete end-to-end ecosystem, covering both hardware and software, while helping Thai industry further develop at an accelerated pace towards ‘Smart Industry’.”

He adds that cloud technology is the backbone infrastructure that enables other advanced technologies, such as AI, IoT, VR/AR, and 5G, helping foster future-oriented innovative networks.

“The cloud functions like a runway, powering efficient data processing to support these technologies. Therefore, Huawei has given precedence to our cloud development, which includes the establishment of the first cloud data centre in Thailand, operating specifically for the Thai market. This commitment can also be seen in our ‘Cloud First’ strategy for ecosystem development in Thailand, so we can deliver the best of experiences to all Thai users,” Abel adds.

Piyatida Itiravivongs, president of Cloud Business Department, Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co Ltd, states: “The synergic integration of the cloud, AI, and IoT technologies can help support the development of the ‘Smart City’ at a national level, through solutions such as smart city management, traffic management or AI drone inspection.

“As for the private sector, the synergy of these technologies within organisations will help revamp operational processes in multiple areas. Data from various sources will be collected through network systems and Internet of Things applications, then sent to the cloud for processing with the help of AI. As such, Thai enterprises that can successfully adapt these technologies will be able to reduce costs, accelerate back-end operational efficiency and deliver a better customer experience.”

Piyatida says the cloud, AI, and IoT will automate operational procedures within organisations, from basic tasks such as office lighting control and movement of people on premises, to improved operations or customer insights, enabling businesses to offer higher quality products and services and delivering a better customer experience, thereby increasing the number of returning customers and generating higher profits for their company.

Piyatida also adds that, according to the Huawei GIV (Global Industry Vision) 2025 Report, it is predicted that 100 per cent of global business organisations will utilise cloud technology and 85 per cent of all enterprise applications will be cloud-based by 2025.

In addition, 86 per cent of all enterprises will adopt AI technology, and enterprise data utilisation will increase to 80 per cent. In Thailand, cloud services will focus on the public cloud due to its convenience and higher return on investment, aligned with the current economic recovery. Furthermore, the public cloud can increase corporate flexibility, helping open more investment opportunities for business expansion. Organisations who require increased information security standards have the option to utilise the hybrid and public cloud with data centres located in Thailand.

Surasak Wanichwatphibun, chief technology officer of the Cloud Business Department, Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co Ltd, says: “Huawei Cloud is the first and currently the only global cloud service provider to have two data centres in Thailand, dedicated to providing cloud services. The local centres will be able to offer the lowest latency, data security protection under the Thai laws, and 24/7 response from customer support and the R&D expertise team located at Huawei’s headquarters.” Huawei is providing cloud services to customers in various industries in Thailand from retail to banking and manufacturing, as well as international organisations such as logistics company J&T Express, entertainment company Mango TV, and media agency Xinhua News Agency.

“Cloud service providers must place priority on their clients’ data security, and having cloud data centres located in Thailand will help maintain the highest data security since the particular cloud service is under Thai law. Moreover, the R&D and customer support service teams will be able to quickly react to solve any demands or problems. “Another advantage of the data centre being located in Thailand is the higher speed of data transactions, with latency under 10 milliseconds, 5-10 times better than other international cloud service providers, aligned and fully compatible with the development of Thailand’s new network infrastructure speed levels,” Surasak adds.

Huawei Cloud has been certified by more than 50 organisations, including ISOA27701, and aligns with Thailand PDPA.

Furthermore, Huawei Cloud is capable of providing both public and hybrid cloud, and with over 21 years of experience working with partners and clients in Thailand, leveraging its rounded expertise, Huawei has deep insights regarding the demands and challenges experienced by companies in the Thai market, the company says.

In addition, Huawei, as the ICT developer of the entire ecosystem (including hardware and software), can provide better overall performance than other cloud service providers, derived from its operations synergy, with 30 per cent more computing power and 30 per cent more cost-effectiveness, to best answer all clients’ needs, the company says.

Indorama Ventures joins World Economic Forum’s Global Plastic Action Partnership

Oct 08. 2020

By THE NATION

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL) has joined the World Economic Forum’s Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP), the company announced on Wednesday.

The global partnership aims to reduce plastic leakage into the environment and is driving the transition to a circular economy for plastics.

“This partnership is aligned with Indorama Ventures’ 2019 commitment to increase the volume of recycled PET by at least 750,000 tonnes, pledging US$1.5 billion [Bt46.8 billion] towards achieving this target by 2025,” the firm said in press statement.

“By joining GPAP, we will advance our shared goal of ending PET plastic waste,” IVL chief sustainability officer Yashovardhan Lohia said. “Harnessing the convening power of the World Economic Forum, GPAP is bringing together governments, businesses and civil society to forge circular solutions – at both the global and national levels. Our recycling facilities across the world can close the loop and deliver a circular economy for PET plastic.

“In March this year we recycled our 50 billionth PET bottle since we started in 2011. We want to go further because we know PET is fully recyclable: by 2025 we aim to recycle 50 billion bottles a year. To achieve this, we have committed up to US$1.5 billion to expand the recycling infrastructure the world needs. The GPAP community is championing this shift to a circular economy and helping the world to understand the benefits of a closed-loop approach,” Lohia said.

“Joining GPAP is a clear statement of Indorama Ventures’ commitment to sustainability and advancing the circular economy,” said Kristin Hughes, GPAP director and member of the World Economic Forum Executive Committee. “Their global presence, fully integrated model and decades of recycling know-how means they are uniquely placed to close the loop for PET plastic.

“We look forward to working with Indorama Ventures and learning from their experience with collection systems around the world. Together we can drive high-potential solutions to improve collection, ensuring plastic never ends up as waste,” Hughes added.
