The world’s first movie in Penang Hokkien, “You Mean the World to Me”, is set to premiere at the Majestic Theatre, a notable historical landmark in Penang.

The movie’s producer Leonard Tee said the screening would most likely take place in the third quarter of this year.

Some of the scenes were shot in the theatre located at the corner between Jalan Phee Choon and Jalan Khoo Sian Ewe.

Formerly known as the Shanghai Sound Theatre, it was said to be the first theatre to feature “talkie” movies in the Northern Malaya region.

It was originally designed as a live performance theatre back in the 1920s.

Tee said they were grateful to building owner 1919 Global for agreeing to let out the space for the movie.

“It will surely be a nostalgic moment for Penangites to watch a local production at this theatre.

“It will remind all of us of the golden era of Asian cinema,” he said when contacted yesterday.

The theatre and the adjoining 12 shop houses were designed by one of the earliest known Straits-Chinese architects, Chew Eng Eam, in 1926.

It was commissioned by local businessman and philanthropist Khoo Sian Ewe, whose name now adorns the street fronting the building.

In 2007, the property was bought over by Singaporean property developer Jonathan Foo, who has given the building a facelift.

The building’s carvings and top crown, which had been removed, have been restored.

Foo, when met at the scene, said they had gone through some old photographs of the building before carrying out the restoration.

“Before that, the building was adorned with a square mosaic structure from the 70s. It didn’t look that nice.

“We brought back the original architecture to it. We are happy as we have managed to get back to its original spirit,” he said.

Following the restoration, Foo said he had big plans for the place, including holding an international squash competition.

“If you look at the space inside, you can literally build a glass court for an international squash event.

“We are also looking at holding theatre screenings, event launches, banquet events and so forth.

“There can also be sporting events such as squash, fencing and badminton, or even art events, fashion and ballroom dancing.

“It will be nice to bring life back to this district again,” he said.

Foo, who had “uprooted” his family from Singapore to live in Penang, said the state is a fantastic place for opportunities, in terms property development. “I always have passion for the restoration of old buildings. My family and I are here to stay.

Music videos celebrating spring by local composers and singers have seen millions of hits on YouTube.

Composer Nguyen Van Chung’s Me Mang Xuan Ve (Mother Brings Spring to the Home) video is a gift to all Vietnamese women to celebrate the upcoming Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.

“I want to show gratitude to all mothers who bring us a happy life,” said Chung, who is from HCM City.

Chung is popular for his song Nhat Ky Cua Me (Mom’s Diary) about a mother’s feelings and thoughts during her child’s growth.

Me Mang Xuan Ve is performed by veteran singer Ly Hai and young singer Ngoc Thanh Thao.

The song has a joyful melody and simple lyrics which describe a family’s feelings as they clean the house during preparations for Tet.

Its video features the acting of both singers and Hai’s wife and three children.

“After watching video, I miss my mother so much. She has worked so hard to bring a happy and comfortable life for me and my family,” said Tran Cam Tien, a native of Dong Nai Province who is studying at the HCM City Medical and Pharmaceutical College.

“The video sends a message to people to think more about their families during the Tet holiday, and work together to bring Tet to the home,” the 33-year-old songwriter said.

Chung began composing songs when he was in university.

He has written nearly 200 songs, including top hits such as Vang Trang Khoc (Tears of Moon) and Chiec Khan Gio Am (Beautiful Scarf). He released two albums with songs for children in 2013 and 2015.

Three weeks after being released, his music video Me Mang Xuan Ve attracted more than 6.3 million viewers on YouTube.

Another music video called Bung Toa Huong Xuan (Spring Fragrance) has also had about 6.3 million views since it was released on YouTube in early December.

The HCM City-based composer Hoai An wrote the song’s lyrics praising spring based on the melody of a famous folk song for children, Tap Tam Vong, by veteran composer Le Cao Phan.

“Tap Tam Vong is familiar to both adults and children. The song is easy to listen to and remember,” said An, who has released dozens of hits and won several music prizes at nationwide competions in the 1990s and 2000s.

Nine cute singers and performers aged four to 14 appear in the video.

They include Phuong My Chi, Phuc Nguyen, Hoang Anh Doraemon and Ruby Bao An, all of whom are popular from television singing competitions for children, Voice Kid Vietnam and Do Re Mi.

Young competitors in other television reality entertainment shows for children, including Ku Tin, Bao Ngoc, Jason and Leica, also appear in the video.

Lam Thanh My, who plays a leading role in Vietnamese-American Victor Vu’s Toi Thay Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh (Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass) film, is also in the video.

“All nine young artists show their sweet and clear voices as well as natural acting.” the 39-year-old An said.

Nguyen Kim Yen, a mother of two daughters in District 2, said her kids loved the video and watched it again and again.

“We were excited about the upcoming Tet after seeing the images of children in ao dai in the spring flower market,” Yen said.

Three young singers Dong Nhi, Trong Hieu and Uyen Linh contributed their voices in the music video Khai Xuan Don Loc (Waiting for Spring Buds), gaining more than 1.5 million viewers on YouTube.

The video features three famous songs about spring, Chau Dang Khoa’s Nhu Hoa Mua Xuan (Spring Flowers), Minh Ky’s Xuan Da Ve (Spring Comes), and Tu Huy’s Ngay Tet Que Em (Spring in the Homeland).

“We hope the video brings joy to people during Tet, and helps them realise that life is beautiful,” Dong Nhi said. — VNS

MCOT budgets Bt800m for producing own TV shows

To retain its TV audience base in the face of intense competition, MCOT is focusing more on producing its own content, investing Bt800 million on TV-show production as well as regrouping its content and marketing business units.

The state media enterprise has also shown interest in returning its licence to run a family channel if the broadcasting regulator amends relevant laws to allow this.

“Content is our core. Self-sustainability in content creation is a new direction for this 38-year-old state media enterprise.

“So we have to set a clear vision for producing our own shows to fill 65 per cent of total time slots, from the current 50 per cent,” president Sivaporn Chomsuwan said yesterday.

To turn this vision into reality, MCOT has regrouped its key departments to work together in the right direction by integrating ideas and execution.

After formerly being run independently, the TV, radio, new-media and event businesses are now all under the content management group, overseen by chief content officer Setthavut Janwowwam, a former executive of the TV production house Kantana Group.

Thai News Agency, Nine Entertainment and the production department will be managed by Soonthorn Areerak, who serves as executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Soonthorn is highly experienced in media and advertising agency. Before joining MCOT, he worked for Dentsu Media Thailand and GroupM Entertainment.

To tap into emerging digital media, MCOT now has Wirote Trabwongwitaya as chief technology officer, formerly of True Corporation.

Sivaporn said these experts would help MCOT’s staff make a difference with strong and creative content and marketing.

He stressed that the three keys to making MCOT a highly creative media company are quality content, creativity, and multi-platform service.

Expecting fierce competition in the digital-television business this year, MCOT has earmarked about Bt800 million for TV production, which will highlight dramas, situation comedies and game shows.

Besides creating unique TV programmes to serve local demand, the company also has an ambitious plan to create its own TV formats for distribution abroad in the near future.

“ID Lucky Number” is a good example of this. The game show will be aired next month, and the pro

grammes will belong to MCOT, while the format is owned by the content creator.

This year, TV business will remain a key growth engine for MCOT, with revenue targeted at Bt2.043 billion.

Total revenue is expected to reach Bt4.2 billion, up 14 per cent from last year.

With the arrival of new digital-TV broadcasters, MCOT’s Channel 9 has lost its long-time content partners, so its ranking among the top players has dropped from number three to number eight or nine.

A Shaolin theatrical performance is set to be held at the Ciputra Artpreneur Theater in South Jakarta on Feb. 19-21.

Brought to the city by the China Performing Arts Agency Productions in collaboration with Bank Mayapada and Ciputra Artpreneur to welcome Chinese New Year, the Shaolin Warriors theatrical group is scheduled to hold five performances that will feature 18 traditional weapons and legendary martial art move

Said to be born from the deep-rooted traditions of Shaolin monks in China, the group usually presents stories that evolve around the daily lives of the monks at Shaolin temples.

“It’s an honor for us to be able to present a world-class performance from China that showcases not only the agility and exceptional ability of martial arts but also valuable Chinese Buddhism life virtues,” Mayapada Bank director Suwandy said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to Ciputra Artpreneur president director Rina Ciputra Sastrawinata, the show would be an action-theatrical performance about a Chinese boy who went to study in a Shaolin monastery.

“I hope the Shaolin Warriors can give the audience a glimpse into the life of the Shaolin monks and their deep-rooted traditions,” said Rina.

She added that she was optimistic the show would attract a wide-range of audiences, from Shaolin fans to martial arts enthusiasts.

“We are aiming for up to 90 percent occupancy for all five performances,” she said.

The Shaolin Warriors show have reportedly performed in front of over 10 million people around the world. It has made appearances in many countries, including the US and the UK.

Can Miss Universe save the universe?

When I was young I always looked forward to watching the Miss Universe pageant on TV. It felt deliciously indulgent seeing all the glamorous outfits and the exotic national costumes, even if they were nothing compared to some of today’s elaborate outfits.

Us neighbourhood kids even played “Miss Universe”. “What’s your favourite dish?” was the most popular question asked in our make-believe interview round. The kids would invariably name somtam, fried rice and noodles. I have no idea how the “judges” scored those answers – maybe picking something spicy like somtam seemed smarter than kiddie food like fried rice – but everyone scored high when it came to sincerity. You’d never hear juvenile questions like that on the real Miss Universe show, of course, especially today, when the contestants have to be very clever, their beauty running far deeper than the surface. The judges are looking for a winner with smarts who can enhance the Miss Universe brand.

This year, perhaps, the organisers went a little too far with the questions. The five finalists coped well, but a lot of viewers were left scratching their heads in bewilderment. Miss Philippines, for example, was asked about the United States reopening a military base in her country. It had to be an awkward moment. Thanks goodness my childhood mock beauty contest didn’t have questions like that! I’d have answered, “Come on, this is a beauty contest! Maybe you want to promote peace and love, but why do we have questions about military things?”

For Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Philippines, it was a no-win situation being asking about an American military base in a contest hosted by Americans. She came up with a response that pleased her hosts: “We were colonised by Americans and we have their culture and traditions to this day, so I think we should be very welcoming to Americans. I don’t see any problem with that at all.” But back home it was payback time. She was bombarded with criticism from countrymen who want the US military gone for good.

Remarkably, the tricky question handed to Pia wasn’t even the most difficult one fielded at the pageant. Miss France had this to ponder: “Having experienced terrorism first-hand, what do you think is the best way for governments to combat this rising threat?” Yes, a question best left to the French cabinet was handed to a 20-year-old beauty contestant. She stayed cool, though, saying we have to look into the root causes of terrorism.

Miss Australia was quizzed about legalising marijuana. Miss Colombia had to address the Illegal-drug trade in her country. And Miss USA wasn’t let off the hook – they asked her about gun control! “This is an incredibly difficult issue and the United States is constantly weighing the options,” she replied, without even sweating. “I think it’s incredibly important that all individuals have the right to protect themselves and feel safe, but I also think that sometimes we need to look at safety as a whole – more than just our personal safety. So I think we need stronger regulations. Specifically, I think we need to pay attention.”

The finalists did their best to stay politically correct and not tread on any toes, but you have to wonder if Miss Philippines’ answer carried any weight beyond helping win her the Miss Universe crown. Saying it’s okay for US troops to be stationed in a foreign country suggests it should be the norm everywhere. The main problem with such questioning, though, is that they were so unfair to the contestants. Yes, the questions gave the ladies a chance to demonstrate their intellect, but their honesty had to stay mute.

I remember a time when the pageant involved a more creative Q&A. Back in 1973 Miss Philippines was Margie Moran (and she won the crown too). She was asked, plain and simple, “If you had $1 million, what would you do with it?” Her response was just as straightforward: “I’d buy a big house where I could live with all the people I love.” I’d certainly have given her full marks for that display of honesty.

Photo: t-pageant.com

Miss USA Brook Mahealani became Miss Universe 1997 in part because of her reply to this sparkling question: “If there were no rules for one day and you could be outrageous, what would you do?” “I’d eat everything in the world,” she said. The audience laughed and she added, “No, you don’t understand – I’d eat everything twice!”

Perhaps it isn’t so silly after all being asked what your favourite food is. If the idea is to test someone’s creativity and sincerity, probing queries about politics and other controversial issues are completely unnecessary. Leave the big policy questions to the world leaders (and see if they can come up with a better answer than a beauty queen). If the politicians do their jobs properly and resolve a few problems, maybe future generations of young ladies can get back to more fun and creative questions on the pageant stage.

And for all the little girls out there, today being Children’s Day, I send you a wish that you grow up to live in a better world, one filled with love and peace – and fewer hypocrites.

The Nation   THU, 14 JAN, 2016 10:07 AM

The Queen of Pop lights the fuse on another great year of concerts, with Santana and Diana Krall in hot pursuit

If you considered 2015 a bumper year for concerts by big foreign acts, the Monkey Year ahead promises to have you swinging from the vines based on what we know so far about just the first three-and-a-bit months.

Clearly the local promoters are getting better at their jobs. In 2015 we had Katy Perry, Muse, Imagine Dragons, One Direction and the Script performing in Thailand for the first time. Keen to return were the Backstreet Boys, Elton John, Avenged Sevenfold, Jason Mraz, Boyzone, Michael Buble and Michael Learns to Rock – as well as a surprise visit by Bon Jovi after a too-long absence.

“It was another golden year for the company,” says Neil Thompson, second in command at BEC-Tero Entertainment, the heavyweight on the local concert-promotion scene. “We signed a partnership agreement with Live Nation that allows us to bring more international shows to Thailand. This year we’ll finally get to see Madonna live in Bangkok after 30 years of waiting, and many more acts. BEC-Tero plans to hold two or three concerts and events per month.”

Madonna’s appearance in Thailand is definitely the biggest news of the moment. She’s been the Queen of Pop for three decades, but until now Thai fans could only watch her career from afar. That all changes when her “Rebel Heart” tour rolls into Impact Arena next month.

Initially billed as one night only, on February 9, the gig sold out within days, prompting arrangements for a second show on the 10th, for which there are still some seats left in case you thought you were out of luck.

Another show that’s sure to be terrific will be Diana Krall’s return on February 19. The five-time Grammy-winning jazz singer-pianist will be at Siam Paragon’s Royal Paragon Hall for her second appearance in Bangkok.

An immensely respected and successful recording and performing artist, Krall is a musical force in other ways as well. She produced Barbra Streisand’s latest album, served as musical director and arranger for Paul McCartney and hit the road for a good cause with Neil Young.

Krall has sold more albums than any other female jazz artist of the last 30 years, and those recordings have earned her nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum commemorative discs. New promoter Viji Corp is presenting her concert, for which seats are on sale at Thai Ticket Major for Bt1,500 to Bt5,500.

On February 27 the Spanish pop quintet Dvicio makes its first landing in Thailand with a show enticingly called “Enamorate con Dvicio” at the Muang Thai GMM Live House in Central World Plaza. BeUS Production is in charge of this event and is expected to announce the finer details at http://www.ThaiTicketMajor.com on January 16.

American guitar legend Carlos Santana obviously loves coming to Thailand because he’ll be back for the sixth time on February 29 with another concert at Impact Arena, part of the “Luminosity” world tour. Thank BEC-Tero for this monster of a show too.

The fans can’t seem to get enough of Carlos and his virtuoso band either, certainly not when they’ve got such an amazing repertoire of hits dating back to the late 1960s. Count on hearing “She’s Not There”, “Black Magic Woman”, “Oye Como Va”, “Smooth”, “The Game of Love”, “Maria Maria” and many more. Considerably boosting interest is the fact that veteran Thai rockers Carabao will be putting in a special appearance. Seats cost Bt2,000 to Bt5,000 at Thai Ticket Major.

Viji Corp’s second concert of 2016 will feature American alternative-rock group Death Cab for Cutie, their first time in Bangkok. That’s on March 3 at Moonstar Studio in Lat Phrao district.

Singer-guitarist Ben Guibbard, bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Jason McGeer have garnered a reputation over the past two decades as one of contemporary music’s most compelling and creative outfits. Seats (not that you’ll be sitting for long) are on sale for Bt1,800 at Thai Ticket Major.

On March 8 it’s the turn of Australian pop-rock band 5 Seconds to Summer to make a Bangkok debut. BEC-Tero has them at Impact.

These Sydney-siders first found fame on YouTube with videos of them doing cover songs, and then in February 2014 they “went vinyl” with the self-penned single “She Looks So Perfect”, which charted in Britain and Ireland as well as Down Under. A self-titled studio album followed in June that same year and was No 1 in 11 countries. Since then there’s been the live album “LiveSOS”, and if you’ve heard it, you’ll be buying a seat for Bt2,000 to Bt5,000 from Thai Ticket Major.

Japanese guitar duo Depapepe whetted Thai appetites with a short showcase of tunes late last year and is back with the full banquet on March 25, at Central Lat Phrao’s BCC Hall.

Takuya Miura and Yoshinari Tokuoka’s upbeat and sophisticated instrumental pop has made them one of Japan’s most sought-after acts overseas. The recently launched “greatest hits” album “All Time Best” was issued in editions produced specifically for every country they’ve played, including Thailand. That kind of special treatment is bound to win fans, and starting at the end of this month they’ll gladly be paying Bt1,500 to Bt3,500 for seats at the organiser’s website, https://ticket.avalon.co.th.

Time for another legend on April 5 when the ageless Welsh pop crooner Sir Tom Jones revisits Bangkok six years after his last appearance here. BEC-Tero will be unveiling the details on its site soon.

We already know what’s on the set-list, though, because Sir Tom can’t go anywhere without performing “It’s Not Unusual”, “What’s New Pussycat”, “Delilah”, “She’s a Lady” and the pretty much autobiographical “Sex Bomb”. He’s a pop star, but he’s also done rock, soul, gospel, R&B, Broadway-type show tunes and even a little bit of country in the course of a four-decade career, meanwhile selling 100 million records.

Hard to beat that!
