Actor Cuba Gooding Jr gets no jail time for sex harassment charges

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2022

Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr received no jail time on Thursday (October 13) after he pled guilty in April to a misdemeanour count of forcibly kissing a woman at a New York nightclub in 2018.

“There were three victims that resulted in six counts in an indictment,” said Gooding’s attorney Frank Rothman outside of Manhattan Supreme Court. “Charges relating to two out of the three were dismissed outright, and the third ended up in a plea to harassment as a violation. The district attorney’s office dismissed all of the criminal charges. He does not end up with a criminal record at the end of this.”

Assistant District Attorney Coleen Balbert told Judge Curtis Farber that Gooding has completed six months of court-ordered counselling and has stayed out of trouble, therefore dismissing all of the criminal charges.

Farber sentenced Gooding to time served.

The actor had been accused of violating three different women at various Manhattan night spots in 2018 and 2019.

He pleaded guilty to the most serious count charging him with forcibly kissing a woman at a nightclub in September 2018.

Gooding was previously charged with touching a woman’s breasts, later identified as Kelsey Harbert, at the Manhattan bar Magic Hour in 2019, and separately with pinching a woman’s buttocks at the TAO nightclub, also in Manhattan, in 2018.

Under the April plea agreement, if the 54-year-old Gooding continued to undergo alcohol and behavioural counselling, he could withdraw his misdemeanour plea and plead guilty to a lesser violation of harassment. The guilty plea, in which Gooding admitted in court to subjecting two other women to “non-consensual physical contact” in 2018 and 2019, came three years after he was arrested.

“I want him to be accountable for the consequences of his actions,” said Harbert outside of the courthouse on Thursday. “But because of who he is, I am the one who will have to live with those consequences.”

Gooding won the Academy Award as best supporting actor for his role in the 1996 romantic comedy “Jerry Maguire” as a volatile football player who becomes his sports agent’s only client, demanding that Tom Cruise “show me the money”.

Two decades later, Gooding portrayed OJ Simpson in the television miniseries “The People v. OJ Simpson”.

“This month marks the five-year anniversary of what has been called the #MeToo movement because many women have been brave enough to come forward either to law enforcement or in civil cases or both,” said Gloria Allred, attorney for Harbert. “There has been accountability and just consequences for many who violated the rights and the bodily integrity of women. I hope that others will not be deterred by what I consider to be an unjust outcome in this case.”

Toy company Mattel is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Tina Turner’s hit song “What’s Love Got To Do With It” with a Barbie created in her likeness.

The doll, which is part of their Barbie Signature Music Series, is wearing an outfit inspired by the music video for the song – a black mini dress paired with a denim jacket and her signature hairstyle.

In a statement Turner said: “I am honoured to welcome my Barbie into the group of trailblazing women already represented and introduce more kids to my journey.”

The eight-time Grammy winner enjoyed huge success in the late 1960s and early 1970s performing with her husband, Ike Turner, but the couple divorced in 1978 after a stormy marriage in which Ike beat her.

In early November 2019, Turner attended the opening night of “The Tina Turner Musical” on Broadway which chronicles her life and work.

She retired from performing after her last tour, which ended in 2009.

Turner, who was born in Tennessee, moved to Switzerland in 1995 to join her German-born record producer partner Erwin Bach and has lived there since and in 2013 she became a Swiss citizen.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2022

Meta Platforms unveiled its Quest Pro virtual and mixed reality headset on Tuesday, marking a milestone for Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg’s break into the higher-end market for extended reality computing devices.

The new headset, unveiled at Meta’s annual Connect conference, will hit shelves on Oct 25 at a price of $1,500 and will offer consumers a way to interact with virtual creations overlaid onto a full-colour view of the physical world around them.

The launch is an important step for Zuckerberg, who last year announced plans for the device – then called Project Cambria – at the same time that he changed his company’s name from Facebook to Meta to signal his intention to refocus the social media giant into a company that operates a shared immersive computing experience known as the metaverse.

Zuckerberg has since poured billions of dollars into that vision. Reality Labs, the Meta unit responsible for bringing the metaverse to life, lost $10.2 billion in 2021 and has lost nearly $6 billion so far this year.

The Quest Pro features several upgrades over Meta’s existing Quest 2 headset, which overwhelmingly dominates the consumer virtual reality market.

Most strikingly, it has outward-facing cameras that capture a sort of 3D Livestream of the physical environment around a wearer, enabling mixed-reality novelties like the ability to hang a virtual painting on a real-world wall or have a virtual ball bounce off a real table.

The Quest 2, by contrast, offers a more rudimentary grayscale version of this technology, called passthrough.

The Quest Pro is lighter and slimmer than its predecessors, with thin pancake lenses and a relocated battery that sits at the back of the headset, distributing its weight more evenly while reducing overall bulk.

For fully immersive virtual reality, Meta has added tracking sensors to the Quest Pro that can replicate users’ eye movements and facial expressions, creating a sense that avatars are making eye contact.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2022

The untold story of Thai Korean war veterans is being revealed at an innovative exhibition in Bangkok. The “K-Webtoon Exhibition” celebrates the diversity of K-pop cartoons with themes running from love to human conflict. Among the exhibits showing is the new series “One Day, My Beloved Idol Group’s Leader Disappeared!”.

The historical fantasy begins with the sudden disappearance of “K”, the leading member of a chart-topping K-pop boy band named Little Tiger. While K’s entire existence begins to mysteriously fade from the public’s memory, the protagonist Pim, a plastic surgeon and the only devoted fan who remembers him, ends up time travelling into the past ― to the outbreak of the Korean War. Pim encounters young Thai soldiers and witnesses their sacrifice for his homeland.

The band’s name, Little Tiger, comes from the moniker given by the then-commander of the 8th United States Army to recognise the Thai battalion’s valour.

The exhibition also features various other videos and images from the Kakao Webtoon (Kakao) platform.

It runs at the Korean Cultural Centre on Sukhumvit Soi 15, 9am to 9pm on weekdays (5pm early closing on Friday).

The World Film Festival of Bangkok, the largest film festival in Southeast Asia, is back for its 15th edition after being suspended since 2017. More than 50 big-screen treats are from countries such as France, Spain, Russia, Japan, and South Korea. Adding to this edition is a film competition.

The 15 edition of the World Film Festival of Bangkok, run by The Nation, is back under the theme “Return to Cinema”, with top films from more than 30 countries.
The films come from movie stalwarts like France, Spain, Russia, Japan, and South Korea, as well as from little-known filmmakers in places like Iran, Ukraine, Brazil, Croatia, Poland, Tunisia, Serbia, and even Mongolia.

The festival is overseen by Donsaron Kovitvanitcha, an internationally accredited independent movie producer, who is currently at the 2022 Busan International Film Festival to cherry-pick potential hits.

'World Film Festival of Bangkok #15' returns with a repertoire from 30 countries

The repertoire at the 15th World Film Festival of Bangkok will be categorised as follows:

Lotus Award Competition
The organizer will shortlist 15 films made by up-and-coming new faces to contend for the prestigious award. The winners will be selected by a panel of film experts from different countries.

Kaleidoscope
This category will cover films that have won recognition in other leading international film festivals.

Record
This category covers documentaries from across the world that offers interesting stories told from different perspectives.

Windows
This section offers films that tell stories in a new way, shot with unique techniques. This section also includes short and experimental films that promise to become the talk of the town next year.

Special Presentation
This category offers more than just films – here the audience also gets the chance to interact with filmmakers and learn more about what went on before it hit the big screen.

Classics
For this category, The Nation has carefully selected iconic classics that are tough to find but still feature large in people’s memories.

This year will also see the presentation of the Kriengsak Silakong Award, created in honour of the festival’s long-time director who suddenly died on March 27. Kriengsak was recognised for his devotion in making the World Film Festival of Bangkok a showcase for new-generation filmmakers.

However, his successor Donsaron is also well-armed for the job, especially after producing many local hits, including “Boundary: Fah Tam Paendin Soong” (2016), “The Master” (2015), “Onthakarn” (2015), “Eternal Night” (2016) and “Die Tomorrow” (2017).

Donsaron was also part of the panel of judges at the 2016 Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema and helped choose NETPAC Award winners at the 2017 Rotterdam International Film Festival. He was also an adviser to the International Documentary Film Festival, Cinema du Reel, and part of the selection committee of the Wide-Angle Short Film category for this year’s Busan film festival.
“We want to bring back a colourful, lively venue for creative talks and the exchange of film culture in Thailand. The 15th World Film Festival of Bangkok will inject new life into the Thai film industry,” he said.

The director also said he is positive that this festival will help reboot Thailand’s image in the international world, serving as soft power for the country. It will also help bring Thai cinema to the world arena.

According to the Culture Ministry, Pattaya has been proposed as the “City of Film” in Unesco’s Creative Cities Network, and the organizer will help promote the seaside town to help the ministry reach its goal.

Suvannee Chinchiewchan, chief operation officer of SF Corporation Plc, said the film festival is well-known in international film circles and showcases Thailand’s soft power in terms of creativity. She said a privately-run national event that is supported by the government is a testament to democracy and unity.

“I’m glad the World Film Festival of Bangkok is returning because it is one of Asia’s original film festivals,” Suvannee said.

The 15th World Film Festival of Bangkok will be run by Nation Group’s 52-year-old founding media, The Nation. The festival is also getting support from various government agencies, including the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Culture Ministry, the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, the Thai Media Fund and the Tourism and Authority of Thailand.

The 15th World Film Festival of Bangkok will be held on December 2 to 11 at the SF World Cinema at CentralWorld.  Visit http://www.worldfilmbangkok.com or http://www.facebook.com/worldfilmbangkok for more information.

THE NATION

60th anniversary of the song’s release on 5 October 1962, Love Me Do reached number 17 in the UK and number one in the US two years later.

It was 60 years ago today (October 5th, 1962) that the Beatles’ first single “Love Me Do”‘/”P.S. I Love You” was released on EMI’s Parlophone Records in England.

Although the song went on to top the U.S. charts two years later, its initial release in 1962 saw the Beatles score a sizable, but still minor, Top 20 hit with “Love Me Do” peaking at a respectable Number 17. The song, which was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney was far from being one of their most recent collaborations, having been written along with the duo’s first batch of songs from 1957 and 1958.

The history of the “Love Me Do” single is one of the more confusing sagas in the Beatles’ history. After the group’s June 6th, 1962 audition  in which a runthrough of “Love Me Do” was taped  producer George Martin, who was unhappy with then-drummer Pete Best’s playing, told the Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein that he would be using a session drummer for future work with the band. Despite that, when the Beatles with new drummer Ringo Starr  showed up to their first proper session on September 4th, a version of “Love Me Do” was recorded with Ringo behind the drums.

“Paul wrote the main structure of this when he was 16, or even earlier. I think I had something to do with the middle.” Said John Lennon, 1972

Lennon spoke again of the song in an interview conducted shortly before his death.

‘Love Me Do’ is Paul’s song. He wrote it when he was a teenager. Let me think. I might have helped on the middle eight, but I couldn’t swear to it. I do know he had the song around, in Hamburg, even, way, way before we were songwriters.” John Lennon, 1980

Despite this, McCartney remembers ‘Love Me Do’ as a joint effort between the two of them, and that it came out of their early songwriting experiments.

“‘Love Me Do’ was completely co-written. It might have been my original idea but some of them really were 50-50s, and I think that one was. It was just Lennon and McCartney sitting down without either of us having a particularly original idea.”

“We loved doing it, it was a very interesting thing to try and learn to do, to become songwriters. I think why we eventually got so strong was we wrote so much through our formative period. ‘Love Me Do’ was our first hit, which ironically is one of the two songs that we control, because when we first signed to EMI they had a publishing company called Ardmore and Beechwood which took the two songs, ‘Love Me Do’ and ‘PS I Love You’, and in doing a deal somewhere along the way we were able to get them back.” Said Paul McCartney

The song was an early Lennon-McCartney composition from 1958, although it wasn’t recorded by the group for another four years.

Unsatisfied with Ringo’s performance, for their September 11th session, Martin hired studio ace Andy White to drum on the two sides of the single  with Ringo being relegated to tambourine on “Love Me Do” and maracas on “P.S. I Love You.”

Despite George Martin’s dissatisfaction with the first version of “Love Me Do,” the original Ringo recording from September 4th was accidentally released as the original single version  and was the version that shot the song up the British hit parade.

The mix-up wasn’t noticed until the song had long peaked on the charts and was replaced by the “Andy White” version for the Please Please Me album in March 1963 and single’s second UK pressing about a month later.

The actual master and mixdown tapes of the “Ringo” version of “Love Me Do” have long been lost and the version that’s now included in the Beatles’ catalogue was taped from a collector’s pristine mint version of the single.

‘Cassette Festival’ rewinds to the ’90s with stars of Thai pop’s golden era

MONDAY, OCTOBER 03, 2022

Fans of 1990s Thai pop music were treated to four hours of blissful nostalgia with the recent return of the “Cassette Festival”.

“Cassette Festival 2”, a sequel to the inaugural concert in May 2019, featured around 50 classics from the golden age of Thai pop performed by almost two-dozen famous singers. All were hits before the age of iPods, YouTube and streaming, when the device of choice for storing music was the cassette tape.

The concert was among the first to unspool in Bangkok following the Covid-19 crisis, marking a return of razmataz to the capital.

Despite the packed hall, fans simply could not sit still, getting up on their feet and dancing to the lively tunes pretty well from start to finish. The groove was aided by an almost seamless transition between performers, providing a non-stop soundtrack of yesteryear.

The background screen onstage added to the nostalgic vibe, with oversized dummies of ’90s icons forming the décor — including a Gameboy, Nokia phone, early boxy Macintosh, VHS video cassette — and of course, lots of audio tape cassettes.

The sold-out concert, held by Atime Showbiz on September 24 and 25 at the 5,000-seat Royal Paragon Hall, kicked off with Mos Patiparn performing his dance-music hits “Lew Lai”, “Salat Sabat” and “Duai Rak Lae Platoo”. He was followed onto the stage by his long-time buddy Aom Sunisa.

Tata Young got people up on their feet with her dance number “A-Bo-Da-Bae” before returning later in the concert with a set of her international hits — “I Believe”, “Sexy Naughty Bitchy” and “Dhoom Dhoom”.

Her appearance on a temporary platform just behind seats closest to the stage was too much for many audience members, who leapt to their feet as Saturday night fever struck.

This long platform allowed audience members further from the stage to get up close and personal with the idols of their youth.

The duo Bow and Joyce of Triumphs Kingdom took to the crowd platform and thrilled fans with their trademark dance number “Pa Chet Na” before moving back to the main stage.

China Dolls duo Bell and Hwa Hwa ramped up the energy a few more notches with their hit “Muay Nee Ka”. Then Katreeya English and Yaya Ying performed their respective hits “OK Na Ka” and “Jeb Nid Nid” alternately in a rousing “dance battle”.

The quartet, who formed “2002 Ratri” two decades ago, followed up by regrouping centre stage for a set of their famous numbers, including “Hula Hula”.

This was among the highlights of the evening’s entertainment as the frenetic foursome rewound the years for their fans in the packed hall. With sweat streaming down their faces, the singers were obviously exhausted as they chatted with the audience after their long performance.

J Jetrin, once known as the “King of Dance”, grabbed the limelight towards the end of the show, performing five of his hits including “Fak Liang”, “Kong Wai” and “Ka Jai”.
