THE NATION

From previous songs such as “Hotel” and “Heart of Stone,” Tor Thanai’s music has been described as a mixture of Minimal, Lo-Fi, and Soul. It is music that is characterized by both its simplicity and its charisma and attention to detail.

However, coming back with his third single, Tor Thanai’s “Only You” delivers a sound that feels like something else entirely. From this song, we see a deviation from Minimal-Lo-Fi-Soul to undefined sounds and genre.

In this new song, Tor Thanai chooses to add vintage synths, giving an 80s nostalgia to the song. And if we were to place this song in a movie, it might perfectly fit as the secret track of the cult classic sci-fi film “Blade Runner” by director Ridley Scott.

In early September, Tor Thanai posted a photo of the cover art for “Only You” on his Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter account, @TorThanai. It was designed by Thai graphic designer Thanapol Praditkanok, or Mac (IG – @mac_a_bre). It features a bold orange background that highlights the black crystal font of the song title and the artist’s name.

He then uploaded an Official Audio of the song to his YouTube channel on September 16th. Upon hearing it, we immediately noticed that the song was full of well-crafted lyrics, starting with the verse where he wonders if there’s something wrong in his life: “Watching
B movies on Friday night… Thinkin’ something isn’t right… Why am I so deeply flawed?… Stayed awake and now I’m torn.”

Next comes an excerpt from the second verse, where he talks about how two hearts are interwoven: “My heart is hard-wired to your device…” Rather than saying it directly, he compares his lover’s heart to a device. The verses and pre-chorus gradually serve to build up to the powerful chorus, “Only you can destroy me… And only you, only you can repair me,” where he adds layers and layers of electric guitars and complex synthesizers.

“Only You,” the most recent single from Tor Thanai, showcases his sonic experimentation and represents his new identity

Even though Tor Thanai is emerging as a Lo-Fi/Soul singer-songwriter who writes and sings in English, not many people know that he is the same artist who once sang the Thai song “Tur Mai Koey Roo” (“She never knows”) in 2006, and “Poo Ying Won Sai, Poo Chai Won Kwa” (Women turn left, Men turn right) with Mam Patcharida Wattana in 2007, released under RS Music.

The last fifteen years have been a trying road for this singer-songwriter. After he graduated from Political Science faculty, Tor Thanai applied for a job at Government Spokesman Bureau, working as a Foreign Relations Officer. He worked there until 2011, when he resigned from his position to study abroad in the USA for the few years.

He eventually returned to Thailand to concentrate on being a full-time stock investor.

But why is he releasing music again after so many years of being on hiatus?

The reason might be that the dream of making music still lingers in his mind, and it now motivates him to return to the music industry to pursue his passion once again.

These days, the daily life of Tor Thanai involves trying to find a balance between being the best stock investor that he can be and staying true to his nature of being a singer-songwriter.

Every day, he spends his early morning reading business news and the company analysis reports sent to him by brokerage firms. Most of these activities start at 8 a.m. He reads the news and reports until 10 a.m., when the Stock Exchange of Thailand opens for trading. Then, the next two hours are spent checking each stock’s technical indicators.

After 2 p.m., he usually visits his favorite cafés in his neighborhood. This is a time for him to forget that he’s an investor and set aside his stern personality for a while to return to his delicate, emotional, and vulnerable songwriter personality.

The ideas and vocabulary he uses in his songs often come from listening to the songs of other artists. But many times, they emerge from the articles he reads in business newspapers and magazines such as The New York Timesthe Wall Street Journal
Fast Company, and the Monocle

Out of the many artists who have influenced him, Sufjan Stevens stands out as one of the most important. He is a Lithuanian/Greek-American artist that many Thai people may not be familiar with, but he introduced Tor Thanai to the world of Indie/Lo-Fi in terms of both musical style and the production process.

The way that Sufjan Stevens works on his music is quite wrong, but it feels right. From mixing on headphones and using the Shure SM57s microphone to record almost everything to setting up a sampling rate for recording at 32kHz, which is considered below an industry standard, his music is strange and unique in an ineffable way.

The work of Sufjan Stevens and the way it challenges rules has impressed Tor Thanai, encouraging him to emulate Stevens’s production style with his songs.

As for the way Tor Thanai works, he has his own method that he calls the “10% system.” For every original draft of ten demos and ideas that he conceives, only one to two of them will be developed into a complete song with melodies and lyrics. And for every ten complete songs, only one or two of them will be taken to the recording studio. While this process takes months and is quite exhaustive, the finished products are songs he feels proud of.

It’s been quite a long journey for this artist, who grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from an early age.

Tor Thanai picked up the guitar at the age of 11 and took classical guitar lessons for almost two years with Kiattipong Tangsakul at Yamaha Ubonratchatani. During his middle school and high school years, he was a member of the school’s marching band, playing clarinet.

He started singing when he was an AFS-exchange student in Itaperuna, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During his stay with a Brazilian host family for one year, his host brothers often played CDs from Brazilian Bossa Nova artists, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Brazilian Pop/Samba artist, Djavan, until he started to be interested in these music genres. He started singing these songs to help him learn Portuguese words and accents and performed these songs in a host family gatherings many times.

When he came back to Thailand a year later, he met a Thai artist Smith Bundit, one of the members of a music duo, Smith & Shane, who temporarily settled in Ubon Ratchathani to give music classes and write songs for his new album. Every time he arrived at Yamaha Ubon Ratchathani school, he saw Smith writing and playing his new demos. Smith’s performance inspired Tor Thanai to write his own materials.

During his time in a Political Science faculty, he formed a band with his friends and performed in various occasions whether acoustic shows or full band shows. He often had a role of the main singer and guitarist of the band. The group performed at various shows including Freshy Night, Christmas Party, and during the lunch break of every Thursday.

Near the end of his bachelor degree study, he released his debut single “Tur Mai Koey Roo”, a Thai phrase which means “She never knows” in 2006, followed by his 2nd single “Poo Ying Won Sai, Poo Chai Won Kwa” (Women turn left, Men turn right) with Mam Patcharida Wattana in 2007.

After he graduated from Political Science faculty, Tor Thanai applied for a job at Government Spokesman Bureau, working as a Foreign Relations Officer. While still worked at Government Spokesman Bureau, Tor Thanai and his friends formed a band called “Sareera” to release an EP called “Light” in 2010. The band’s single “I+Love+You” was played on a radio “Seed 97.5 FM” and gained some success in the Thai music industry. In 2011, he resigned from his position to focus on his music and stock investing full-time.

In 2012, he went to study abroad in Los Angeles. During his time there, he released an album named “Summer Sky” with songs such as Summer Sky, Forgive Me, and Black Bird, etc. He toured extensively in various local coffee shops and clubs in Los Angeles such as Republic of Pie, Kibitz Room, Kulak’s Woodshed, and Bank of Venice.

After taking a hiatus from the music industry for many years to study in a master degree at New York University and to focus on his stock investing business, he is back with an English single “Hotel” and started to work more seriously on his music projects again.

“Only You,” the most recent single from Tor Thanai, showcases his sonic experimentation and represents his new identity

“Only You” was mixed and mastered by the prolific Thai mixing and mastering engineer Pete Tanskul of 8Bit Mixlab, whose credits include Stamp, Lipta, and Nap A Lean. This is the third time he has collaborated with this mixing and mastering engineer.

Right now, fans can take a look at the song’s cover artwork on his instagram: @torthanai (https://www.instagram.com/p/CiHYwvtP4lp/) or listen to an Official Audio on his YouTube channel: Tor Thanai (https://youtu.be/YgXy3TAcCAc).

Tor Thanai’s “Only You” will be released on most streaming platforms in October.

Discovery of King Richard III’s remains under car park re-told in ‘The Lost King’

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2022

The news of the discovery of King Richard III’s skeleton in a Leicester car park in August 2012, more than five centuries after his death, made headlines around the world.

Ten years on, the story of the woman who spearheaded the search that led to the exhumation of his remains is told in the new feature film “The Lost King”, which received its UK premiere in London on Monday (September 26).

Directed by veteran filmmaker Stephen Frears and written by co-star Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope, the film centres around Philippa Langley, an amateur historian from Edinburgh who became captivated by Richard’s story and crowdfunded over £30,000 to launch the excavation that unearthed the monarch’s remains.

The movie highlights Langley’s role as the driving force behind the discovery, under the banner “the incredible true story – her story,” downplaying the contributions of the team of archaeologists and scientists.

“We’ve had ten years of University of Leicester’s point of view. I mean, it was important to redress the balance and tell the story from Philippa’s point of view and put her front and centre and on a pedestal where she belongs,” Coogan told Reuters on the red carpet.

Langley, who was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2015, also attended Monday’s premiere alongside the actor portraying her, Sally Hawkins.

The 60-year-old author said she hoped the film and her story would inspire and empower young girls.

Frears, director of films including “Dangerous Liaisons”, “High Fidelity” and “Florence Foster Jenkins”, said he jumped on the chance to reunite with Coogan and Pope, with whom he made the 2013 movie “Philomena.”

The 81-year-old filmmaker, who also directed “The Queen” and “Victoria and Abdul,” said he did not particularly seek out stories about British royals to tell in his films – and didn’t in fact hold a special interest in monarchs and monarchies.

Richard, the last Plantagenet king of England, remains a complex figure whose life, made famous by Shakespeare’s play, deeply divides opinion among historians in Britain and abroad.

A tough soldier and popular in northern England, Richard was crowned at Westminster Abbey in July 1483 after replacing his 12-year-old nephew Edward V on the throne after claims that the young prince and his brother, the sons of Richard’s elder brother Edward IV, were illegitimate.

The two boys later disappeared from the Tower of London, and their fate is one of the greatest unanswered historical questions.

However, Richard has long been blamed for ordering, or even carrying out, the murder of the “Princes in the Tower”.

His supporters say this is misleading, written as it was over 100 years later when Queen Elizabeth I, the granddaughter of Henry Tudor, who became Henry VII after his victory over Richard at Bosworth in 1485, was on the throne.

Archaeologists from the University of Leicester were able to confirm from his remains that the body showed signs of injuries consistent with wounds received in battle; a bladed implement appeared to have cleaved part of the rear of the skull while a barbed metal arrowhead was found between vertebrae of the skeleton’s upper back.

The team also found that the curvature of his spine was consistent with Shakespeare’s depiction of Richard as a hunchback.

It took the team several months to confirm the identity of the bones.

DNA from the skeleton was traced back to a direct descendent of the medieval king’s sister, Anne of York, which helped the team to identify that the remains belonged to Richard.

Going Against All Odds : ‘Thai cave Rescue Limited Series’

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2022

Stephanie Adair

Revisit the rescue mission that kept people around the world on their toes: Thai cave Rescue Limited Series tells a story of grit and gumption, of humanity, uniting in a battle of wits against powerful nature to pull off the sensational rescue.

In 2018, for nearly three long weeks of nail-biting suspense, the eyes of the world were on Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Rai. Experts from a range of disciplines flew in from all over the world to join a mission to rescue 12 young footballers and their coach trapped deep inside Tham Luang Cave, their exit blocked by sudden flooding. Each day, every moment posed new challenges, raising hopes and uncertainty, and relentless speculation about the fate of the young lives trapped in darkness without food and water, their whereabouts unknown, and no means of communication.

The boys were first spotted by two British divers before they were rescued after 17 long, gruelling days.

The Nation spoke to ‘Bloom’ Varin, in an exclusive interview, on his experience of playing the role of “Dr. Bhak Loharjun” — a Navy doctor with expert diving skills, who assessed and monitored the boys’ physical and mental health during the operation — in the “Thai Cave Rescue Limited Series”.

This incident was all over international news and drew attention from all over the world. As a Thai, how does it feel to be part of telling this story?

“How does it feel to be one of the storytellers of this beautiful story, I feel honored, to say the least. Because this is the point in time of humanity that crosses a difficulty together as not only a whole nation but it doesn’t seem to me at all like there’s any boundary between languages, culture, religion, or beliefs. We came together as one, to overcome and accomplish something that is impressive. I remember myself telling all others all the time that this story seems more fiction than real life. But it happened and it’s the real thing, so I think this is the point in the history of mankind that is so beautiful and it’s something to be told for many generations to come. It’s beautiful.”

But to really understand what the 13 boys went through in the gruesome situation of rain and heart wrench of watching the waters rise while stuck in a cave for days, ‘Bloom’ Varin decided to recite his lines in a cave.

“So, at that point, I felt like I had to really get into the zone. On one hand, I’ve never had the chance to be a full-time soldier like Dr.Bhak, so I remember one evening I had to spend time studying the monologue right beside the pool which was the only source I could get as close to the water as possible. But that wasn’t close enough, so I drove myself to the nearest cave which was in Ratchaburi, and spent hours inside the cave trying to study the monologue because inside the cave it is this unique echo and the humidity and everything, you could feel it in the air and there’s no connection from the outside world.”

Thai Cave Rescue Limited Series will be released on Netflix for viewing in over 190 countries on September 22. Witness Thailand’s real-life rescue drama, a dangerous race against time and mother nature to save 13 helpless lives.

Frontman Dave Grohl broke down in tears at the start of the song “Times Like These”, before launching into an emphatic performance as the band played their hits “Pretender”, “My Hero”, and “Everlong”.

Hawkins passed away at a hotel in Bogota, Colombia in late March, sending shockwaves through the global music industry.

Hawkins’ 16-year-old son Shane was one of the band’s guest drummers, which also featured Guns N’ Roses’ Josh Freese, Blink-182’s Travis Barker and 12-year-old Nandi Bushell, who grew to fame after challenging Grohl to a virtual drum battle in 2020.

Foo Fighters headlined the event that featured a star-studded line-up which included The Beatles’ Paul McCartney, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson and Queen’s Brian May, Nile Rodgers and Mark Ronson.

Former Oasis guitarist and vocalist Liam Gallagher kicked off the concert.

Funds raised from the concert’s tickets and merchandise will go toward Music Support, a charity chosen by the Hawkins family, a press release stated.

Happy birthday Doraemon, (minus) 90 years old today!

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/life/entertainment/40019703

Popular Japanese character Doraemon celebrated his birthday on Saturday – with a twist.

Happy birthday Doraemon, (minus) 90 years old today!

The fictional robot cat was born in the future in 2112, making him minus-90 years old.

Doraemon first arrived in our time in 1970 as a character in a manga and anime series created by Fujiko F Fujio, the pen name of Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko.

The male earless robotic cat travels from the 22nd century, sent back in time by a young boy named Sewashi to help his great-great-grandfather, Nobita Nobi.

Born from a stray cat

His creator Fujimoto was suffering writer’s block when he saw a stray cat in his garden. It gave him inspiration for a character who travels by time machine to fix mistakes in the past.

He crossed the stray cat with a Japanese doll to create a robotic feline from the future who zips back through time to help Nobita.

Doraemon made his debut 52 years ago as a manga series with 1,344 stories.

It told the story of Nobita, a lazy but kind boy with a flawed personality.

Nobita is bullied at school and has poor grades – not helped by his tendency to nap when he should be working.

Meanwhile, Doraemon has a weakness for dorayaki pancakes but also a fear of the robotic mouse that ate his ears. Adding to the mind-boggling richness of this world are the secrets he keeps in the fourth-dimensional pocket in his belly. Inside is an endless variety of gadgets, a mix of household appliances and magical tools based on Japanese religious beliefs.

The official number of Doraemon’s gadgets is not known but is estimated at around 4,500. He uses some of the items regularly, but others appear only once.

Fujio once claimed Doraemon has a total of 1,293 gadgets. However, Yasuyuki Yokoyama of Toyama University analysed the series in 2004 and found a total of 1,963 different gadgets in 1,344 storylines. The Doraemon Fanclub lists the number at 1,812.

Why Doraemon is loved

Analysis by psychologists suggests the secret of the series’ popularity lies in the character of Nobita. As a likeable loser and low achiever with a limited skill set, he is easy to relate to.

Most of us, after all, have a lazy, selfish and even cowardly side to our character.

Meanwhile, Doraemon is a helper who can solve his problems but refuses to indulge Nobita every time.

Fujimoto died in 1996. When his co-creator Abiko passed away in April this year, there were rumours he had left behind a plot for the series ending. One rumour says the ending features Nobita lying bedridden in hospital with his friends around him. Another has Doraemon’s battery running out and erasing his memory, as the spare battery was in the ear gnawed off by the mouse. Time machines have become illegal in the future world, meaning he can’t travel there to be repaired, so he is stranded in time.

However, Nobita decides to study hard and becomes a world-class scientist who is able to fix Doraemon’s memory himself.

Thai legend Jintara goes global in Times Square equality push

An image of Thai country singer Jintara Poonlarp towering over New York’s Times Square was praised by the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington on Saturday.

Thai legend Jintara goes global in Times Square equality push

“The 53-year-old Jintara is a living legend in Thailand. She has released over 50 albums and 47 singles and been touring for 33 years,” said the Embassy in a Facebook post.

Jintara is featuring on the world’s most famous billboard as part of Spotify’s “Equal” campaign for women’s empowerment.

The embassy explained that: “Aside from her occasional forays into pop, her songs are mostly Luk Thung, which is Thailand’s version of country music, and Mor Lam, another rural style of song that is similar to rap in that the words are mostly spoken.” It added that she has also won fame in Thai films and TV shows.

Jintara revealed the news of her latest role in a Facebook post two weeks ago.

“Finally,” she wrote, in a post illustrated with her image towering several storeys high over Times Square. “Thank you, Spotify, for letting me be a part of EQUAL THAILAND, a great campaign to support women’s empowerment.”

US magazine Billboard wrote earlier this year: “Spotify launched EQUAL, a global music program as a part of its commitment to advancing gender equity in music. The initiative aims to celebrate women pushing the envelope and inspiring the next generation of artists, producers, and executives.”

EQUAL was launched in response to the music-streaming website’s findings that “only one in five artists on the charts are women. Yet we know how integral women artists’ influence has been on Spotify and the music industry at large. To begin to upend this disparity, we must amplify the work of women creators.”

Other artists featured in the campaign include Thai pop songstress Bowkylion, Saweetie of the US, Griff of the United Kingdom, Duda Beat of Brazil, and Gyakie of Ghana.

BlackPink’s Lisa: MTV award highly meaningful to me

“The Best K-pop MTV award is highly meaningful to me and BlackPink fans,” Thailand’s ecstatic Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban said on Wednesday.

BlackPink’s Lisa: MTV award highly meaningful to me

She made the remark after winning the prestigious trophy at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards show on Monday for her song “Lalisa”, which was released on YouTube in September last year.

The song became the most viewed video by a solo artist in a single day in YouTube history, notching up a whopping 73.6 million views in a mere 24 hours of its release. It went on to become the sixth most viewed video in the world in 24 hours, being beaten only by three other videos by Asian artists, one by K-pop superstars BTS and two previously by BlackPink.

The awards, also known as the VMAs, are held by cable channel MTV to honour the best in music videos. This year’s event was held at Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey.

Lisa thanked MTV for a “wonderful night” at the event and expressed gratefulness to her fans for their “encouragement”.

She trumped other nominated K-pop artists, including Itzy, Seventeen, Stray Kids, Twice and BTS.

Apart from being the first solo K-pop artist to win such a honour, this was also the first time Lisa and her other BlackPink bandmates performed at a US awards show.
