Huawei is accelerating 5G development on the global market.

The tech giant’s deputy chairman Ken Hu told reporters that the firm has now signed 50 commercial contracts for 5G around the world, and it has shipped 150,000 5G base stations. Many operators around the world, including those from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific, are racing to deploy their 5G networks.

The firm officially issued its 5G licenses last month, marking the beginning of 5G commercialisation in the world’s largest mobile communications market.

“I believe China will help set a great example for the rest of the world, and provide useful insights for deployment in other regions,” said Yu.

Huawei has invested US$4 billion (Bt122.8 billion) in 5G over the past 10 years. It also has developed 5G capabilities in every aspect, from chipsets and products to networking.

“5G is already seeing large-scale deployment. The 5G development will rely heavily on services. 5G-enabled service innovation will help us push network performance to the next level, and help operators get greater returns on their 5G investment. The new service innovations include video streaming apps, live broadcasting, HD video and massive broadcast trucks onsite,” said Yu.

He added that 5G will pay a pivotal role in the digitization of all industries. Currently, China is in the process of evolving towards automated, digital and AI-driven industrial development.

5G can provide much greater bandwidth and lower latency than traditional wireless connections, and can also support different applications with dedicated network slices. This allows 5G to meet a wide range of industrial needs, and lays the foundation for a more fully automated, intelligent future.

“The networks themselves are the foundation of everything, but the future of 5G development will rely heavily on services. 5G-enabled service innovation will help us push network performance to the next level, and help operators get greater returns on their 5G investment,” said Yu.

For his part, Huawei 5G product line president Yang Chaobin noted 5G is on the fast track for commercial use, saying that Huawei has launched commercial 5G networks in South Korea, the UK, and Switzerland. Huawei’s commercial 5G networks offer speeds 10 times faster than those of 4G networks, causing user traffic to increase exponentially.

In Thailand, AIS was the first mobile phone network operator to join with global partners including Nokia, Huawei and ZTE Corporation to showcase 5G technology in the “5G the First LIVE in Thailand by AIS” event held at the end of last year.

The National Broadcasting & Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) last month sold three 700 megahertz spectrum licences for a total of about Bt53 billion as part of an effort to develop 5G in the country.

More disruption on the cards as IT advances

Tech July 01, 2019 01:00

By   JIRAPAN BOONNOON
THE NATION

INNOVATIONS and advances in information technology will come with further disruption to Thailand as it pursues the goal of digitalisation.

Patama Chantaruck, vice president for Indochina Expansion and managing director of IBM Thailand, said the Thai market narrative is increasingly influenced by emerging technologies (hybrid cloud, AI, blockchain) and evolving customer preferences that are driving industry and digital disruption. The rising importance of data-driven business models, security-aware IT architectures and hyper-connected ecosystems puts an increasingly diverse set of players into competition to ensure relevancy and success.

IDC has unveiled its top predictions for Thailand’s IT industry for 2019 and beyond, saying that by 2022, over 61 per cent of the country’s GDP will be digitalised. Growth in industries driven by digitally enhanced offerings, operations, and relationships will lead to US$72 billion (Bt2.217 trillion) in IT-related spending from 2019 through 2022. IDC believes that a digitalised economy will create more intense competition, especially when digital disruptors are heavily penetrating the local market.

According to Digital Economy Promotion Agency (Depa), Thailand’s IT market will grow by more than 13 per cent year on year in 2019, and will be worth Bt527 billion by the end of this year. Hardware will be the biggest contributor with Bt234 billion while digital services will have the highest growth at 34 per cent.

IDC predicted that, by 2024, AI-enabled user interfaces and process automation will replace one-third of today’s screen-based apps in Thailand. By 2022, 20 per cent of enterprises will use conversational speech tech for customer engagement.

According to Forrester’s Asia Pacific Tech Market Outlook for 2019 to 2020, business and government purchases of tech good and services in Thailand is expected to grow 5 per cent annually this year and the next.

Anothai Wettayakorn, vice president of Dell EMC Indochina, said the world has been moving towards the digital era in the past few years with data as the most valuable asset at the centre of an organisation, supported by new technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, the cloud, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

Organisations in both the private and public sectors need to adopt advanced technologies in the process of digital transformation. With data at the core and applications running in multi-cloud, companies can develop insights that allow them to deliver the best experience to customers while creating new business models to beat the competitions.

Private companies and state agencies have been striving to improve their IT infrastructure to cope with the progress in technology. Apart from investing in new technology architecture, companies are also focusing on application developments supporting multi-cloud-based operations, especially mobile applications that create more value for their businesses.

Technology development and improvement play a vital role in encouraging young workers, allowing them to work anywhere at any time with any device and application. This includes advanced security systems to protect and prevent organisations from cybersecurity threats.

Anothai said Thailand has adopted advanced technologies at a high acceleration rate, backed by the government’s strong support, clear direction and policies, such as the Thailand 4.0 initiative.

More private and public investments are expected in five key technologies: cybersecurity, IoT, AI, multi-cloud and compute-centric approach data centre.

A Forrester survey showed that 100 per cent of the respondents were using multiple cloud infrastructure and/or cloud application platforms while 99 per cent believed the use of combined infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service platforms improve performance.

According to IDC, as Thailand embraces the digital path for its economy, as much as 61 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product will come from industries driven by digitally enhanced products and services by 2022. IDC predicted that Thailand’s transformation would drive $72 billion in IT-related spending from 2019 to 2022.

The Dell Technologies Digital Transformation Index indicates that businesses in Thailand plan to invest more in the next two to three years in security and emerging technologies, including multi-cloud, AI, IoT, VR/AR.

In the digital era, data is considered an organisation’s most valuable asset, Anothai said.

To reap the most benefits from data, it’s necessary to bring together advanced technologies, such as using IoT to retrieve huge amounts of data into the system for further analytics while AI works to provide users’ in-depth information, which when used with advanced applications would increase an organisation’s competitiveness. It’s believed that investment in the next five years will be in these areas.

Anothai said companies and organisations must embrace changes to stay relevant in the digital era. Even IT businesses need to adapt to emerging technologies to meet customers’ demand. It’s also necessary to retrain workers to enhance their ability to keep pace with the changes.

Kaival Boonsaith, head of digital solutions at Fujitsu (Thailand), said that Data Analytics, AI and machine learning will lead the market from fiscal year 2019 to fiscal 2022 while new business model over new platforms will be more and more visible in Thai businesses.

AI and Big Data allow corporates know more about their customers’ behaviour and preferences, whereas robotics reduce workplace risk and shorten the production process. Blockchain will lessen risk in loan approvals.

He added that the new IT startup companies, with their own platform, stand out as they will be more dynamic in their new approach.

Supak Lailert, executive director and chief operating officer at Yip In Tsoi, said organisations must cope with the digital disruption through new technologies. Companies should also equip their workers with in-depth expertise, able to change and learn new things faster and more diverse.

Moreover, businesses will utilise cloud services to increase business activities and streamline operation process while cloud security will have an important role in driving cloud efficiency and support market demand. He added that Yip In Tsoi had transformed itself from being a system integrator to a provider of digital services to the market.

Meanwhile, technologies that will lead the IT market in the next three to five years are cloud computing, Big Data, AI, blockchain and cybersecurity, he said.

Organisations adopting these technologies will have an advantage over their rivals in an economy driven by data innovation, AI and automation.

Nuttaporn Voonklinhom, an executive at Thailand e-Business Centre (TeC), said the development and growth of mobile technology was the key driver for the creation of Big Data.

Meanwhile, artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) will enter into the daily life of consumers, providing more convenience in the areas of smart home appliances and devices.

He said Forrester Research expected global technology market spending to reach $3.36 trillion by the end of this year, compared to $2.859 trillion in 2014. Companies will continue to invest in new hardware and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, related innovations and technologies such as Big Data and digitalised software to boost operational efficiency.

Vatsun Thirapatarapong, managing director at Cisco Systems (Thailand), said enterprise marketing saw high growth in the past few years as corporates prepare for transition. Growth will continue in the Thai IT market with companies making further investments in information technology to create added value to their services and products.

In the process digitalisation, technologies with the highest growth potential are social, mobile, analytics and the cloud while AI, blockchain, automation and IoT help facilitate the transition, he said.

Vatsun said, in the digital era, customers and businesses could participate and utilise various services to meet their demands and requirements.

Convergence of new tech|out to rock the corporate world

Tech July 01, 2019 01:00

THE NATION

ARTIFICIAL intelligence (AI), the internet of things, and blockchain are the main drivers in corporate Thailand’s transition to a digital era, said Patama Chantaruck, vice president for Indochina expansion and managing director of IBM Thailand, adding that the pervasive nature of the new technologies is reshaping standard business architectures in the country.

“We have seen the emergence of disruptive technologies. We have seen the historic changes – the advent of data, the emergence of AI/cognitive, the maturation of cloud, the internet of things, the IT and business platforms, the rise of blockchain, the coming-true power of quantum computing – these are each taking a part in transforming the way our businesses operate, and are fundamentally transforming the way we live,” said Patama.

Organisations need to have a hybrid, agile and flexible cloud infrastructure – open, secure and well managed – operating in seamless private, public and multi-cloud environments, to host and run automation, blockchain and AI solutions, he added.

Businesses need open cloud technologies, enabling them to move applications and data across multiple clouds easily and securely.

The rapid innovations in technology have caused companies across industries to rethink how they leverage digital tools such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented and virtual realities and more, into their daily operations.

“We are at a historic inflection point – when data is growing at an exponential rate and changing the way we work and live. Data is being referred to as the world’s newest natural resource, the ‘new oil’,” said Patama.

AI is both “now” and real, with each of us already interacting with this technology. Artificial intelligence is being used for customer queries at call centres and by farmers seeking recommendations for yield increases among numerous other services.

IBM Watson AI, for instance, can provide answers to questions based on a small amount of vertical data. It has now been adopted by more than 16,000 clients in 20 industries in 80 countries around the world.

This is the time to place ethics, trust and transparency at the heart of the discussion about artificial intelligence. Companies and their customers will never be able to realise the full potential of AI unless it is underpinned by trust and confidence.

For its part, IoT is fundamentally about the connectedness of things. Today, everything is invariably connected to everything else. Now, this connectedness allows people to link data and actions across previously disparate and discrete activities.

The use of connected industrial equipment, buildings and facilities and vehicles, industrial IoT (IioT), is creating exponential increases in data (80 per cent of it unstructured) and the opportunity to find completely new and useable insights.

These insights enable people to not only optimise the way everyday things are done, but more importantly to extend that to imagine and implement completely new ways of working.

“IoT gives AI the data needed to understand the physical world as everything becomes connected, while AI is needed to make sense of the vast amounts of data IoT is generating. And to allow people and things to work smarter and better as a result,” said Patama.

Meanwhile, Natavudh Pung-charoenpong, chief executive officer of Ookbee, said that AI and machine learning are playing an exponential role in the real world, especially in autonomous vehicles and voice command using natural language processing. We will have more home devices that can better understand the context of human conversation.

These will be the mainstream technologies in the near future, coming with a bigger impact on the business models of many industries (automobile, insurance, transportation and logistics) and on individual lives.

As for blockchain, Natavudh said the technology has high potential in digital currencies. Currently, big players across industries are moving to tap the opportunities.

The beauty of digital currencies is in cost saving and convenience for both service providers (across industries) and users. Digital currency by blockchain will play a more important role in the next digital disruption, he said. Meanwhile, Patama of IBM Thailand added that blockchain will do for trust and transactions what the internet did for communications and data.

“Disruptive technologies have already changed our work and life. In Thailand, businesses have a great appetite for exploring disruptive technologies.

AI, the cloud, blockchain, IT systems and cybersecurity are coming to life here,” said Patama.

Vatsun Thirapatarapong, managing director of Cisco Thailand and Indochina, said that AI, blockchain and IoT will continue to disrupt businesses and people’s lives in the next few years. There will be more industries affected by these technologies, following the media, retail, technology, and finance sectors affected in the first round.

“Corporates need to focus on customer experience, business process, and tech talent when going through a digital transformation,” said Vatson.

People, as individuals, will also face a bionic transformation that will see a lot more blending between the digital and physical worlds. We will experience a lot more offerings, such as omnichannel and online-to-offline services, he predicted.
