THAI people plan to travel overseas by an average 3.9 trips in 2019 – higher than other countries in the Asia Pacific and even across the globe, according to the latest survey by Visa.

According to the 500-sample survey in 27 countries, people in the Asia Pacific plan to travel an average 2.8 trips this year, while the global average is 2.7 trips in 2019 – well below the Thai overseas plans for 3.9 trips.

Meanwhile, travel spending by Thai people would increase from an average Bt49,135.68 per trip to Bt73,670.80 per trip in this year and 2020, Visa Thailand’s country manager, Suripong Tantiyanon, said recently.

Following the high overseas travel spending using credit cards in the first quarter of the year saw to rising, for example First Choice Credit card reported 30 per cent increase when compared to the same period of last year. KTC also forecasts that spending for travel will increase by up to 55 per cent in the first quarter of this year, and continue to rise over the rest of 2019.

The top five destinations for Thai people to travel were Japan (64 per cent), Hong Kong (37 per cent), Singapore (29 per cent), South Korea (21 per cent) and China (16 per cent). The first four destinations will remain on the list for the year 2020, the survey found.

Can Tho city, the economic hub of the Mekong Delta, this week saw a ceremony for five new domestic routes at its international airport as Vietjet added Can Tho–Hai Phong, Can Tho–Vinh (Nghe An province), Can Tho–Thanh Hoa, Can Tho–Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa province) and Can Tho–Dalat (Lam Dong).

The ceremony included Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and senior leaders of the Vietnam government.

The new routes will operate from April 26, with Vietjet establishing itself as the airline with the most flights to and from Can Tho city, the company’s chairwoman, Nguyen Thanh Ha, said.

With Vietjet now having the advantage in the region, she said, “the new routes will not only create convenient travelling opportunities for local people and tourists by safe, modern air transportation, but also promote foreign exchange and contribute to increased investment in the area.”

Haze casts shadow over Songkran tourism

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has forecast tourism levels during Songkran to drop by 10 per cent, partly due to the northern haze problems.

Meanwhile, the Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA) expects the strong baht to encourage Thais to travel abroad during the Songkran festival.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said the haze problem in the northern region would have a direct impact on tourism levels in the North during the Songkran festival from April 12 to 16. It is expected that the number of tourists will drop by more than 10 per cent compared to last year. Hence, tourist groups are expected to adjust their travel plans and choose to travel to other areas in the Kingdom instead.

He expected overall hotel occupancy rate in the northern region during Songkran to be around 75 per cent. Hotels in areas affected by wildfires, such as Mae Rim, Chiang Dao and Fang districts of Chiang Mai province may have reservation rates under 50 per cent. Hotels in Mae Hong Son province may face the worst booking rate at under 30 per cent, making some hotels opt to close down for renovations.

“Due to the fallout from the downturn in the three northern provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son, TAT expects tourism revenue during this year’s Songkran to reduce by Bt2 billion,” he said.

The TAT has predicted that the number of Thai tourists travelling during the Songkran festival at 3.11 million people, increasing by 3 per cent and generating 5 per cent revenue growth, amounting to Bt10.697 billion.

Some 546,000 foreign tourists are expected, an 8 per cent increase, generating an increase in revenue of 14 per cent, valued at Bt10.283 billion. In total, this is expected to generate an income spread of Bt20.98 billion, a 10 per cent increase year on year with a national average reservation rate of 75 per cent.

Most tourists visiting during the holiday season are predicted to be from nearby markets, such as Asean countries, China, Taiwan, and India, with the top three Asean tourists being from Singapore, increasing by 26 per cent; Malaysia, increasing by 24 per cent; and Vietnam, increasing by 22 per cent. Meanwhile, tourists from East Asian markets are also forecast to increase, with tourists from Hong Kong increasing by 26 per cent; from South Korea by 14 per cent; and from Japan by 5 per cent.

Supawan Tanomkieatipume, president of the Thai Hotel Association (THA), said that the rate of hotel bookings throughout the country during Songkran was not good yet.

At present, Chiang Mai has only a 60 per cent reservation level after being affected by haze problems. Bangkok and Pattaya have similar bookings at 60 per cent. The southern region has 70 to 80 per cent bookings.

A key cause of the low reservation rate is the global economic slowdown, which has yet to recover, she said.

“The hotel occupancy rate for Songkran this year is expected to decrease by 5 per cent year on year due to the impact of the smog crisis. This has led to lower reservations by foreign tourists compared to the same period last year,” she said. “Hotel operators hope to see more last-minute bookings in the days leading up to the Songkran festival.”

Vichit Prakobgosol, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), said that although the level of bookings of foreign tourists this Songkran was not comparable with last year, the reduction of tourist figures this year was not drastic. Due to the smog problem in the northern region, Chinese tourists, who usually visit Chiang Mai in large numbers during Songkran, may change their travel destinations to other countries such as Japan, Vietnam, Philippines and Indonesia.

On the other hand, the appreciation of the baht will lead to more Thais travelling abroad during Songkran, Yuthasak said.

Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) reported that during this year’s Songkran period, an average of 40,000 Thais would travel abroad every day.

TTAA vice president Charoen Wangananont said that because 2019 has two consecutive holidays – Chakri Memorial Day and the Songkran break – Thais are more likely to make plans to travel for up to 10 days from April 6 to 15. This long holiday season makes Japan the most popular destination for Thais, followed by Europe.

He predicted that during this period, up to 300,000 Thais would travel abroad, spending at least Bt30,000 per trip, with a total spending of Bt9 billion.

TOURISM  Kok Pha-Ngan Island  faces challenges

Thailand’s idyllic Koh Pha-Ngan island is renowned globally for its marque Full Moon parties. On the heels of soaring demand for the big event, visitor numbers surpassed the one million ceiling two years ago and over a five-year period registered compound annual growth rate of 17 per cent.

While the numbers are impressive, the reality for resorts on the ground is one of disruptive trading. Accommodation establishments are continually being forced to deal with high occupancy that often surpasses 80 per cent in peak periods but rapidly falls off as soon as the Full Moon event tapers off.

According to C9 Hotelworks’ latest Koh Pha-Ngan and Koh Tao Hotel Market Update, the two islands have over 13,000 rooms and supply growth is rising at 10 per cent. As the destination matures, the key challenge is how to diversify its market segments in order to avoid being a one-trick pony.

Commenting on tourism trends to the islands, C9 Hotelworks’ Bill Barnett said “unlike most other Thai resort areas that are being immersed in Asia-centric mass numbers, demand to the two islands in the Gulf of Thailand is focused on long-haul visitors from Europe, Australia and North America.

The main challenge to avoid big event syndrome and a mono market, is the dependence on nearby Koh Samui’s private gateway airport which is experiencing challenging conditions due to high airfares and a broader lack of airline diversity servicing the sector. At the end of the day, you can’t stay there, if you can’t get there.”

Thai Airways has announced a change in its mileage accrual and award tickets chart from October 1.

The adjustment will see its frequent flyer programme members earn miles based on fare tickets and bonus miles based on membership status while increasing the number of miles used to redeem award tickets.

According to the new mileage accrual, the number of miles that a member earns will depend on the class chosen and fare.

The higher the price paid for tickets, the more miles the passenger will receive.

Royal Orchid Plus members will also receive bonus miles for Thai international flights.

The airline said the changes were necessary to be in line with other airlines’ frequent flyer programmes.

The new chart for Thai and Star Alliance network will see the number of miles used to redeem award tickets on certain routes increased on an average of 24 per cent.

With the new awards, members may now redeem one-way award tickets, using 50 per cent of a roundtrip instead of the previously required 68 per cent.

Members may redeem miles based on the current award chart until September 30.

Baht strengthening propels Thai outbound travel

DESPITE forecasts of an economic slowdown, Thai outbound travel is set to continue growing by 8-8.5 per cent this year after the baht continued to appreciate late last year, according to the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA).

ATTA president Charoen Wangananont estimates that Thai tourists visiting other countries will reach 10.92 million to 11 million this year, rising 8-8.5 per cent from the 10 million last year, with overall expected spending of about Bt330 billion. Spending is estimated at Bt30,000 per person per trip. For the past five years, the number of Thai outbound tourists has been rising 7-8 per cent per annum.

The baht’s appreciation has positively affected outbound Thai travel, reducing tour operators’ costs of tour packages by about 10 per cent even though prices of the packages are normally high during the current period, which is the high season for the Thai outbound travel market.

Given the large number of chartered flights carrying foreign visitors, particularly Chinese and Japanese coming to Thailand, Thai tourists have also been encouraged to visit other countries particularly Japan. The smog blanketing Bangkok and the northern provinces as well as the warm weather in Thailand are also encouraging more Thai tourists to travel abroad.

Thai tourists visiting Japan are expected to rise to 1.2 million this year from 1.13 million a year ago, while Thais visiting China are expected to remain steady at about 600,000.

“Thai outbound travel is growing well even though the Thai economy is expected to slow down this year. Presently, about 25 per cent of Thais visiting other countries travel with tour operators and the remaining 75 per cent choose to go on their own,” Charoen said.

During the Songkran festival – a peak season for Thai outbound travel – about 300,000 Thai tourists could plan their trips for 10 days from April 6-15 with estimated spending of Bt9 billion. The most popular destination is Japan, followed by the Europe. Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said the ministry expects 15.44 million Thai tourists to travel during April 11-17, up 8.66 per cent from last year’s Songkran period.

Within Bangkok and its vicinity, about 129,000 trips by cars, trains and boats are forecast during the festival, an additional 18,000 trips and 8.55 million passengers.

The ministry is also targeting reducing the number of accidents, death toll and injuries this year by 5 per cent.

AirAsia has now apologised following an advertising campaign using the phrase “Get off in Thailand” was posted around the city of Brisbane to promote the airline’s direct route to Bangkok.

Collective Shout, a campaign movement against the objectification of women says the marketing gaff promoted sex tourism in Thailand.

Melinda Liszewski, a campaigner at Collective Shout accused the airline of “promoting sex tourism.”

Air Asia has responded… “AirAsia takes community feedback extremely seriously and the airline sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused from recent concerns raised.”

“AirAsia can confirm the advertising campaign has ended and we instructed our media partners to have the advertising removed as soon as possible today from all locations.”

Brisbane City councillor Kara Cook branded the campaign an “absolute disgrace” and said “it should never have appeared on our city’s streets.”

The Australian regulator Ad Standards said while it had not received any complaints about the advertising on the bus, it had received one complaint about the same advertisement on a billboard.

The same ad is still on a billboard at Brisbane Airport, however the airport tweeted on Monday afternoon that it was being removed as a priority.

AirAsia began a new direct flight route between Brisbane and Bangkok in February this year.

An AirAsia spokesman said the campaign had since ended and the last advertisements were being removed around the city.

TOKYO – A group of companies, including NTT Docomo Inc. and Mitsubishi Estate Co., has begun trial runs of a new high-tech scooter called Rodem, offering tourists the chance to cruise around Tokyo’s Marunouchi district for free.

The one-person vehicle is equipped with a tablet device that allows users to access information on restaurants and shops in the area while on the move. Docomo and the other firms aim to use the vehicle to develop new services for tourists.

Three vehicles are being used for the test rides, which run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.

Rodem was originally developed by Fukuoka Prefecture-based robot manufacturer Tmsuk Co. as an electric wheelchair for use in nursing care. Drivers control the vehicle using a joystick and can travel at speeds of about 6 kph.

The companies have prepared several tours. In the “history experience tour,” riders can take in historic architecture while videos on the tablet offer explanations. They can also hold up the tablets to display information on surrounding restaurants using augmented reality technology, or AR.

Traditionally a time when Thais return to their hometowns to pay respect to their elders by pouring scented water onto their palms and visit a temple to make merit, newly released booking data from Agoda (http://www.agoda.com/?site_id=1811392) suggests that they are bucking tradition to spend Songkran abroad.

For the first time this year, more overseas destinations make an appearance in the top 10 with Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul and Taipei taking up four of the top 10 spots. Furthermore, Tokyo has usurped Bangkok’s crown for the most-booked Songkran destination, a title Bangkok held for at least the last two years.

Japan, South Korea and Taiwan offer visa-free entry and have many attractions to offer travellers looking for an alternative way to spend Songkran, such as the trendy Shibuya neighbourhood in Tokyo, the world class Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan in Osaka, the elegant Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul and the famous Taipei 101 Observatory.

Thailand’s seaside cities Pattaya and Hua Hin, renowned for their laid-back vibe, dynamic nightlife, and delicious street food, hold onto second and third destination for Thai travellers.
