AS TRADE ties quickly increase between Thailand and New Zealand, Thai Airways recently joined the Boeing Dreamliner club with stepped-up daily flights to Auckland, adding more than 65,000 seats to the route per year.

The upgraded service has proved successful for Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI), which has been operating for three decades in Auckland.

“We’re committed to helping grow and strengthen New Zealand’s market ties with Thailand through our new daily Dreamliner service, which offers business travellers 30 ‘royal silk class’ business seats to Bangkok daily, and boosts business class capacity by 40 per cent per week,” said Karun Sirarojanakul, the Thai Airways general manager for New Zealand.

The full services delivered a pleasurable experience, including business-class seating and sleeping on board the long-haul 787-9 Dreamliner that recently replaced the airline’s 777-200ER aircraft used on the route to Auckland since 2008

“THAI is the only airline that operates the Bangkok-Auckland-Bangkok route,” said Karun. Flight frequency on the route increased in 2016 from four flights to five flights per week, boosting weekly capacity by 25 per cent. That was again stepped up in 2017 to daily flights, boosting total capacity by 40 per cent per week.

Thailand is now New Zealand’s eighth largest trading partner, with goods trading between the countries increasing almost 150 per cent since the Closer Economic Partnership was signed in 2005, according to New Zealand Export and Trade website.

Total trade figures between New Zealand and Thailand now total $3.62 billion (Bt113.32 billion) and it is estimated the new THAI service is worth $53 million to New Zealand’s economy.

“The increase in service is great news for New Zealand and will inject $53 million annually into the New Zealand economy,” said Scott Tasker, Auckland Airport’s general manager for aeronautical commercial on the Auckland Airport website.

Beside its alliance, the four-star airline also operates code-share with non-alliance members including Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia, making it easier for passengers to access local destinations.

New Zealanders have a visa exemption for a one-month visit to Thailand.

“Thailand is a popular holiday destination for Kiwis, with more than 120,000 New Zealanders travelling there during the past year,” Karun said.

“The upgraded service will bring more travellers to Thailand, which is the travel and business hub of Asia. On the other hand, Thais can enjoy exploring adventurous experiences and attractive Maori culture here,” he added.

THAI has joined with Destination Rotorua, Ngai Tahu Tourism, and Auckland International Airport to promote travel between Thailand and New Zealand with special campaigns that end this month.

Joining the recent media trip, I experienced cultural destinations in Rotorua, an island city located in New Zealand’s North Island that is renowned for its geothermal activity and Maori culture.

THAI has launched the “Hello New Zealand” campaign for customers to mark the special occasion of its increased flights.

A special fare for economy-class travel on the Bangkok-Auckland-Bangkok route starts at Bt25,720 per person (fares are inclusive of applicable airport taxes for a minimum of two travel partners).

Royal Orchid Plus joined hands with New Zealand Immigration and offers ROP members (Platinum Member, Gold Card and Silver Card) plus one non-ROP member travel partner who holds a Thai passport and resides in Thailand, the chance to apply for a New Zealand Visa without presenting a bank statement. This offer will be valid until March 31, 2018 and is applicable for ROP members who have held silver card status for at least 12 months.

“Hello New Zealand” tour packages are available for those who prefer freedom when they travel. This includes a four-day North Island fly-and-drive package starting from Bt42,500 and a 10-day North and South Island fly-and-drive package starting from Bt74,900. These prices include economy class tickets, accommodation with breakfast and car rental (unlimited distance). The package also includes an iFREE Global Travel Sim card.

Meanwhile, Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) and its subsidiaries have announced their results for 2017 with an operating profit of Bt2.85 billion (29.8 per cent lower than the same period last year). They attribute the drop to a 24.2 per cent increase in jet fuel prices, while average passenger yields decreased by 7.7 per cent due to the heavier competition and the reduction of fuel surcharges even though the average cabin factor was higher than last year.

After deduction of one-time expenses, mainly from the impairment of assets and aircraft and the loss on foreign currency exchange, THAI and  its subsidiaries reported a net loss of just over Bt 2.07 billion.

The Department of Tourism (DOT), under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, is taking an active role in strengthening tour guides’ and tour operators’ knowledge on Issan cultural heritage and the people’s way of life in order to accommodate an expected increase in the number of tourists from Asean countries.

The DOT said that in line with the Asean policy to boost tourism within the region, it is assisting tourism personnel in the upper Northeast to deepen their knowledge on Issan history and cultural heritage as well as to improve their skills and abilities to serve the visitors efficiently.

“It’s necessary for people in the tourism industry to give impressive experiences to the visitors which will bring in more tourists and more repeated visits,” said Anan Wongbenjarat, director general of the DOT.

According to a report by the China Tourism Academy (CTA) and online travel service Ctrip, six out of 10 Asean member states were among the 10 favourite destinations for Chinese tourists in 2017.

The six Asean member states on the list are Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Other countries on the list were Japan, South Korea, Maldives and the United States.

According to the report, outbound visits by Chinese residents hit a record high of more than 130 million and they spent US$115.29 billion (Bt3.6 trillion) in 2017, making China the world’s biggest source of outbound travellers.

The report found that China’s outbound tourists demand high-quality tourism products, with more of them preferring premium and customised trips, looking for a “more foreign experience”.

Living conditions and services, rather than shopping and sightseeing, were given more weight by Chinese tourists. Outbound travel has now also grown into a gauge measuring the happiness of Chinese.

Boost to west coast tourism

THE CABINET has approved a high-end tourism project “Thailand Riviera” at its mobile meeting in Phetchaburi province yesterday, aiming to boost tourism in the coastal western provinces.

Somkid Jatusripitak, deputy prime minister, said the Cabinet agreed on the plan for tourism development in the west coast to boost community economic development and upgrade tourism to the global stage.

“Thailand Riviera” will cover the west coast from Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon to Ranong province.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand will set aside part of its budget for the high-end project which will be forwarded to National Tourism Policy Committee on March 12.

As a means to support the project, the Ministry of Transport will soon complete bidding document for the high-speed train project, Bangkok-Hua Hin, which will be forwarded to the Cabinet for approval. Once the high-speed train project is materialised, real estate development will follow, leading to urban and community developments.

“There are several good tourist spots from Petchaburi to Chumphon province and we have to find a way to make them known to tourists,” Somkid said.

In the meeting to map out a strategy on economic and social development for the provinces in the central region yesterday, the government asked for cooperation to construct a large-sized aquarium in Samut Sakhon province as a means to attract more tourists and push for the province as the world’s kitchen city with seafoods.

Weerasak Kowsurat, tourism and sports minister, said “Thailand Riviera” will be called “Hadsai Luang Chaifang Thalae Wang” in Thai and will be turned into one of the world’s top sea destinations.

In 2017, about 13.92 million tourists visited this area, spending Bt52.23 billion. Of the nearly six million tourists in Phetchaburi, five million went to Hua Hin. Prachuap Khiri Khan recorded 4.2 million tourists, while Chumphon registered 1.29 million and Ranong booked 904,078 tourists.

Once the “Thailand Riviera” project is implemented, places in these provinces will be grouped and connected with the Ministry of Transport’s route development of high-speed train, double-track railway, roads, airports and ports.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports plans to spend Bt170 million for 45 projects as part of its budget for fiscal year 2019.

“Thailand Riviera” project will bring benefits to communities, development of tourism-related products and services, and extend infrastructure.

More entry points sought for cross-border travel

Representatives of tourism associations in the Northern region at a recent meeting on “Enhancing competiveness for community tourism” where they urged to open more entry gates to boost cross border travel.

A CONSORTIUM of tourism associations in the northern region has urged the authorities to open more entry points in order to boost cross-border travel, while also calling on entrepreneurs to initiate local tourism products that meet changes in tourist behaviour.

Ampai Chaipijitr, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand Northern Chapter, said more tourists, both locals and foreigners, had visited communities in the North since the government launched the “Discover Thainess Campaign” last year.

More foreign tourists now travel by car and enter the Kingdom at major entry points, particularly in Chiang Rai province, she said.

However, the council’s northern chapter has seen more demand for cross-border tourism in other provinces, hence it is urging the authorities to consider opening more entry gates in a bid to boost such activity, she added.

“More entry gates in the North can be opened for tourism, including at Kiew Pha Wak and Wieng Hae in Chiang Mai province, Huay Ton Noon in Mae Hong Son province, and Ban Huak in Nan province. If these entry gates were to be opened, the areas would witness more visitors,” she suggested at a recent “Enhancing competiveness for community tourism” meeting.

Currently, Mai Sai and Chiang Khong gates in Chiang Rai are the main entry points for tourists from Laos, mainland China and Myanmar.

Suree Boonyanupong, researcher at the Social Research Institute of Chiang Mai University, saidChiang Mai and other provinces in the North could offer tourists more attractions aside from the region’s Lanna culture and natural beauty, as it has many other things to offer, such as unique communities, traditional foods – and local events all year round.

More importantly, some provinces can be developed as entry points to boost cross-border tourism, she said at the meeting.

“Tourism business in the North has been in a developed state since 2003, which means there is nothing really new in terms of mass tourism. But today’s tourists need to experience and understand the culture and people’s ways of living, instead of [tourism authorities] focusing on numbers. The trend provides a chance to shift to more quality tourism,” she explained.

Suree added that the formation of the Asean Economic Community also presented an opportunity to get more visitors from neighbouring countries, as well as from countries slightly further afield.

“The North should develop itself as the gateway from and into Laos, Myanmar and China. I believe that more tourists will visit the region and help drive the local economy if more entry gates are opened,” the researcher said.

Ampai said Japan was an accepted example of community- and culture-based tourism development.

The Japanese government took 20 years to turn the former capital, Kyoto, into a world-class community-based tourism destination, with the keys to its success being co-working between authorities, operators and local residents, and a clear tourism promotion plan, she added.

Sawan Khwanthaisong of the Chiang Mai Tourism Business Association said community-based tourism would become more popular among international markets, and Thailand’s northern part could serve that emerging trend.

With more and more of today’s tourists tending to seek new experiences from different communities, local operators such as hotels, guesthouses, resorts, restaurants, tour businesses and shop owners are therefore urged to adapt their products and services to meet such change.

Asean seeks strategy for tourism

ASEAN is calling for bids from experienced consultants to create the region’s “Tourism Marketing Strategy 2017-2020”, said Tran Phu Cuong, acting director-general of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and coordinator of the bids.

An overall budget of US$30,000 (about Bt1 million) will be assigned. The deadline for the submission of proposals is August 19, with the service agreement to be signed by September 9.

The presentation and adoption of the final version of the marketing strategy is scheduled to take place in mid-2017 ahead of a meeting in Vietnam of Asean heads of national tourism organisations.

The Tourism Marketing Strategy will follow on from the “Visit Asean@50: Golden Celebration” campaign that will be rolled out in 2017 to mark 50 years of Asean.

The marketing strategy will also sit within the framework of the already adopted “Asean Tourism Strategic Plan 2016-2025”.

The scope of work for the marketing plan includes a market-research programme that will analyse Asean’s current market positioning and confirm likely future patterns and trends for visiting the region.

Specific deliverables of the marketing plan include a competitive analysis of tourism in Asean; vision, objectives, goals and targets; market-research findings on aspects such as purpose of trip and length of stay; branding, logo and tagline; action plans; budget requirements and resourcing; monitoring and evaluation; and an implementation timetable.

“The consultants will be experienced in working across multicultural settings, and be willing to think and act creatively and strategically, and produce innovative tourism solutions,” Cuong said.

Asean women

Adrienne Woltersdorf, director of UN Women and the German political foundation Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), said Asean women had the potential to boost the region’s labour force and economy.

“Asean economies have potentially vast numbers of skilled and unskilled female workers that are not being fully included,” she said.

Economic growth across Asean’s 10 member states has averaged 5 per cent a year, and the job market for the population of 622 million is estimated to be worth $2.6 trillion annually. But women’s lack of equal opportunities cost the region’s economies an estimated 18 per cent of gross domestic product, or almost half a billion dollars, in 2015.

Tourists are walking in Mekong riverfront village, Chiangkhan, which is being branded as new international ecotourism destination. Thailand is expected to welcome 1 million ecotourists in the next few years.

THE THAI Ecotourism and Adventure Travel Association and the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration are promoting Chiang Khan as a new international tourist destination.

Duangkamol Chansuriyawong, president of TEATA, said yesterday that Chiang Khan – an old village on the bank of the Mekong River in Loei province – had high potential to become an international destination, especially for ecotourists.

The 300-year-old riverfront town has been popular among local tourists for years but was not that well known among foreigners.

“TEATA and DASTA have been promoting and developing unique destinations for years and now are promoting Chiang Khan,as a unique wooden community,” she said.

Taweebpong Wichaidit, deputy director-general of DASTA, said Loei was one of the provinces it selected to promote as special areas for long-term development.

Last year, 629,700 visitors, mostly locals, visited the town and generated income of Bt994 million.

“Since it’s a village, Chiang Khan can be promoted as a year-around destination,” he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Thanasak Patimaprakorn is scheduled to visit Chiang Khan on July 6 to map out tourism development for the province as well as to seek cross-border tourism cooperation from Laos.

Earlier, top tourism officials from Vientiane and Loei discussed cross-border tourism as part of cooperation under the Asean Economic Community.

To improve connectivity, the government is renovating Loei Airport, expanding major roads and opening border bus routes.

Duangkamol said more hotels, resorts and guesthouses had opened in the areas. A capsule hotel recently started to serve budget travellers.

Some other attractions and unique culture events in the province are the Phee Ta Khon festival in Dan Sai district and several national parks including Phu Kradueng and Phu Ruea.

In Chiang Khan district, there are also Ban Na Sao village, which is the base of the Phee Khon Nam festival, and Phu Thok conservation park, she said.

Insulting comments affect visitor flow: tourism industry

STRICT REGULATIONS to regulate Chinese tourists entering Thailand by road resulted in no vehicle entries one month after their implementation, said Pakaimass Viara, Chiang Rai Chamber of Commerce deputy chief.

News of the finding came as Chiang Mai residents welcomed stricter |controls of Chinese tourists’ transport to improve road safety.

The road entry point into Thailand for most Chinese tourists is R3A Highway through Laos.

Pakaimass attributed the drop off to regulations making the road journey to Thailand too expensive for many people.

//

“This is a different story to the situation last year when many Chinese tourists visited our country by car,” Pakaimass said. “Now the tourist |industry in Chiang Khong, which relies heavily on Chinese tourists, has already been affected and some businesses have already closed down.”

Chiang Rai Tourism Authority of Thailand director Lertchai Wangtrakuldee said Chinese tourists who wanted to travel to Thailand by car must follow the Transport Ministry regulations, which were very complicated and expensive.

Lertchai said Chinese drivers had to undergo a driving test which took an entire day, buy car insurance and they could not drive in other provinces.

“From what I have asked the tourism business owners that arrange road tours from China, I found that tourists still want to travel to Thailand by their own car. But after the Transport Ministry regulations came into effect, they felt that it is too costly and complicated to travel more than 1,000 kilometres and they can only travel in Chiang Rai,” he said. “We are trying to solve this problem by suggesting the affected tourism business owners send a petition to the relevant agencies asking them to loosen the regulations, and if the tourists are allowed to travel beyond Chiang Rai, the high number of Chinese tourists will resume.”

Gratae Pawantree, a Chiang Mai resident, said there were still a lot of Chinese tourists in the province.

“I think it is good to regulate the Chinese drivers on the streets because they are not familiar with our traffic |system and caused so many traffic |accidents. So I am happy with the regulations to control the tourists who drive from China,” Gratae said.

In a related development, Buntha Chailert, chairman of the Chiang Mai Tourism Industry Association, said that anti-Chinese comments online had resulted in fewer Chinese tourists visiting the province.

Buntha said that because a lot of |people had complained about the bad behaviour of tourists, many Chinese believed they were not welcome.

He wants the authorities to punish people who posted anti-Chinese |comments because they are affecting the relationship between the countries.
