GLOBAL demand continues to be a valuable source of bookings for Thai hoteliers.

During the 12 months ending in the first quarter of this year, on average, the booking window of international travellers to Thailand stretched over a month (36 days), |with an average length of stay per booking at three days, according to a survey by |online travel company Expedia group.

Year-on-year growth shows top destinations in Thailand are Pattaya (up 70 per cent), Bangkok andChiang Mai (up 60 per cent), Phuket (up 55 per cent) and Koh Samui (up 50 per cent).

Smaller regions on the rise with eye-catching triple-digit growth include Koh Lipe, Northeastern Thailand, Rayong, Trat and Hat Yai.

Data from the same period showed that package bookings generated a booking window more than 1.5 times as long as stand lone hotel bookings. In addition, cancellation rates of packages are also much lower compared with standalone bookings.

Top package-generating markets include Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore and Japan.

“Delivering global demand for Thai hoteliers is a mission for us,” said Pimpawee Nopakitgumjorn, director of market management at Expedia group. “In particular, Expedia package bookings are attractive because they are a great way for hotels to build a strong base of customers without eroding their retail rates. Last year alone, we sold [more than] 7.1 million packages globally.”

THE TOURISM Authority of Thailand and Emirates airline are joining forces to boost niche tourism markets in Thailand.

TAT and the United Arab Emirates’ flag carrier signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday to increase promotions for inbound tourism through the airline’s global network.

The promotions will focus on niche markets such as green tourism, sports tourism, luxury tourism, weddings and honeymoons, and medical health and wellness.

The agreement also involves the possibility of launching new routes from Dubai to key tourism destinations in Thailand such as Chiang Mai and Pattaya via U-tapao airport.

Badr Abbas, Emirates’ senior vice president for commercial operations for the Far East, said the airline carried more than 700,000 passengers from its global network of destinations to Thailand last year.

More than 580,000 of them flew to Bangkok and 120,000 to Phuket.

“Emirates is planning to add its seventh daily flight between Bangkok and Dubai on July 1. This service will be operated by a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and will help meet growing passenger demand, affirming Thailand’s position as a popular destination for business and leisure,” he said.

Access to markets

Juthaporn Rerngronasa, TAT’s deputy governor for marketing to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas, said Emirates would help TAT access markets in regions that hold great potential for its unique tourism proposition.

Under the agreement, the best strategies and practices will be put in place to increase Thailand’s marketing footprint and position it as a “Quality Leisure Destination through Thainess”, which focuses on enhancing Thailand’s image as a unique leisure destination offering quality with value.

“This ensures the balance between tourism growth and its social and environmental impact by creating ‘value-added experiences’ and striking a balance among revenue, community and the environment.”

THE TOURISM Authority of Thailand (TAT) has joined hands with Mitsubishi Electric Kang Yong Watana Co Ltd and Nation TV Channel 22 to organise five cycling events in five different provinces.

Entitled “Slow Life Cycling at Hidden Gems Plus”, the project invites visitors to ride along in the events, which will be held between May and September.

The cyclists can join any or all of the following rides: Phatthalung’s Talay Noi Wetlands Preserve on May 29; Rayong’s Tung Prong Thong golden mangrove field on June 26; Chaiyaphum’s Pa Hin Ngam National Park (Tung Dok Krajeaw) on July 24; Nakhon Pathom’s Phra Pathom Chedi on August 28; and Lamphun’s Wat Phra That Hariphunchai on September 25.

For more information, visit http://www.nationtv.tv/slowlifebiketrip/ or m.facebook.com/slowlifebiketrip.

TAT deputy governor for domestic marketing, Sujitra Jongchansitto, said during the press conference that the project would promote eco-tourism, boost public awareness of new attractions, and stimulate community economies.

TAT aims to increase the number of cycling tourists this year to 450,000 people, which could translate into tourism income worth Bt1.5 billion, she said.

Nation Broadcasting Corporation executive Nongnat Hanwilai, who supervised the project, said the cyclists could join in activities with local communities and learn about their lifestyles such as fishing, handicraft-making, and tasting fruits at orchards, as well as each community’s “One Tambon, One Product” goods.

Managing director Yasushi Moriyama of Mitsubishi Electric, the sponsor of the events, said the company saw many benefits for Thailand.

This cycling campaign, which promotes tourism and community participation, matched well the company’s policy to promote Thai culture, education and life quality, as well as community participation in environmental conservation, he said.

Gastronomic tourism push

THE DESIGNATED Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (Dasta) has launched the first gastronomic tourism model in Chiang Mai, as part of its low carbon destination management and sustainable project.

Nalikatibhag Sangsnit, director-general of Dasta, said last week that the Baan Rai Gong King community was one of its 13 community-based tourism development sites.

Baan Rai Gong King was recently recognised by the Pacific Asia Travel Association as an inspired award winner for a small community that has turned around from an unhealthy community to a “health and wellness” destination.

The community was selected for gastronomic tourism research commissioned by the Thailand Research Fund, aimed at designing living interpretation through food. “By implementation of the locals’ life and their heritage, gastronomic tourism has been employed as a key mechanism,” he said.

Dasta believes that local Thai food and tourism can be combined into gastro-diplomacy. Thai food is definitely more than just tom yum kung soup, phad Thai or green curry.

Nalikatibhag said food was the major economic driver particularly in the provinces, as it could create linkages among agriculture, heritage, art and tourism. Research shows that revenue generated by community-based tourism in the designated areas comes from tourists spending on food, ranged from 30-40 per cent per capita spending.

“Food ingredients procured from outside the community could account for 40-50 per cent of costs if there’s no management. “The study indicates that using local ingredients could distribute income to the community and also reduce costs as well as save the environment,” he said.

Dasta has urged other provinces to follow this project if they’re looking for an opportunity to increase and retain this revenue within the community.

Por Luang Somsak, head of the village, said villagers have formed a group offering organic products and farm tourism under its own brand, “Suk-Siam”. People in the village have created herbal gardens and built a health centre to support the low-carbon project.

THE TOURISM Authority of Thailand (TAT) predicts that only 2.1 per cent more foreign tourists are coming to celebrate Songkran this week.

“It seems that overall tourism during Songkran this year will likely not be so bustling, maybe due to the economic turndown, which is a major cause for many people not travelling,” Somrak Kumputch,TAT deputy governor, said yesterday.

China is now the largest source of festival-goers, so Tourist Police are staying alert for travellers from that country.

Somrak said more than 2.1 million foreign tourists would celebrate Songkran from April 13-17.

Bt6.9 billion spending

They would spend Bt6.9 billion while here, which is up 3.5 per cent from last year.

The Thai Hotels Association has reported that arrivals might not peak this month despite the grand festivities.

Many in-bounders cannot secure seats, as more Thais are going abroad.

Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, president of Airports of Thailand Plc, said 3.9 million passengers would pass through its six international airports – Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai, and Hat Yai.

The six airports would handle 16 per cent more travellers from April 8-18, or a total of 361,837 per day.

Flights are expected to increase 10 per cent to 24,227 through AOT‘s airports.

To provide assistance and convenience to holidaymakers, Tourist Police have called all personnel to be on alert during the festival particularly for Chinese, who are expected to flock to the country this month.

Pol Maj-General Surachet Hakphan, commander of Tourist Police, said more than 30,000 Chinese would travel to Thailand per day from April 11-17, or more than 200,000 during the seven-day period.

He has ordered his officers at all major destinations across the country to closely monitor tourist venues.

The major provinces and cities getting extra attention are Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hat Yai, Udon Thani, Koh Samui and Pattaya.

However, there’s no report of international crimes plotted against the country at this time.

TAT to boost tourism during low season

TOURISM

THE TOURISM Authority of Thailand (TAT) has mapped out activities to boost domestic tourism during the five-month low season between May and September.

“The authority isn’t worried about international arrivals, as the number of tourists from key markets continues to grow. But the current drought will hit the domestic economy, and that is why we need to push more tourism activities,” TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said on Wednesday.

TAT has created different travel themes for each month and will propose them to the government today.

Starting with May, a tourism campaign will be launched to encourage teenagers to travel during the school break. In June, local foods and seasonal fruits and farms will be promoted nationwide.

“One of events in June is ‘Thailand Selfie Day’, on June 1. Locals are invited to take photos of themselves and submit them to compete for prizes including Thailand’s best resorts, spas and restaurants,” he said.

The agency also aims to boost the number of Buddhist travellers in July as Buddhist Lent Day is that month. In the Mother’s Day month of August, a special campaign for female tourists called ‘Lady’s Month’ will be held.

“TAT will use Nong Mali, daughter of the late star Tridsadee ‘Por’ Sahawong, as tourism ambassador.”

TAT in September will encourage government officers in their final year of service to travel before their retirement.

Yuthasak said some other campaigns such as Thailand Grand Sales would be running during the rainy season as usual, which are expected to attract tourists from neighbouring countries as well as boost spending by locals.

In the meantime, TAT will ask Thais to avoid overseas trips during low season. It will promote a “Best of the World in Thailand” campaign to encourage locals to sample some of world’s best products and services right here in Thailand, such as the best hotels, best spas and best restaurants. The agency expects to spend Bt10 million to run its campaigns during the five-month period.

Yuthasak said TAT was still projecting revenue from domestic tourism at Bt850 billion to Bt900 billion. The events in the low season are expected to help increase Thai tourists’ average spending from Bt2,600 to Bt2,800 per head per day.

Three on China’s no-fly list for ‘uncivilised’ behaviour

Beijing – Three people in China have been fined and placed on a no-fly list since the China Air Transport Association introduced a national system to blacklist unruly air passengers in February.

The trio, the first to be punished under the system, were banned from major airlines for “uncivilised behaviour”, including hitting a checkpoint security officer with a can of milk, attacking airline personnel over a flight delay and refusing to switch off a tablet PC during a landing, the association said.

They will be unable to book flights with five of China’s biggest airlines – including Air China, China Southern and China Eastern, which together operate about 80 per cent of routes in and out of China – for up to two years.

The identities of the offenders have not been revealed.

An editorial in the China Daily yesterday said that such blacklisting was “long overdue” and that the first punishments would warn other travellers to “toe the line”.

“There is no reason for them to be respected when they do not show enough respect for others,” it said.

Li Xiaojin, a researcher at the Civil Aviation University of China, said a blacklist system is necessary as conflicts over delays and disputes among passengers increasingly pose safety risks. “As China’s civil aviation market remains immature, we need more safety education, as well as measures like this to encourage passengers to behave and guarantee safety,” he said.

However, Qiu Baochang, a legal consultant for the China Consumer Association, said specifications of the blacklist system should be detailed to avoid infringements of consumer rights. “The system is in line with international convention, but specific conditions under which a passenger can be warned or blacklisted, and the procedure to inform and educate targeted passengers in advance, should be further discussed,” he said.

The Chinese authorities last year declared 11 types of actions strictly prohibited on flights and at terminals, including creating disturbances at check-in counters, damaging airport security facilities, and intimidating or assaulting crew members.

Such behaviour has frequently made headlines in the country with the world’s worst track record for flight delays.

In January last year, 25 passengers were held by the police after they fought with crew members over a bad weather delay and opened the emergency exits.

In December 2014, a Chinese woman on an AirAsia flight from Bangkok to Nanjing threw a cup of noodles full of boiling water at a Thai flight attendant and punched the cabin windows, threatening to jump out, in a dispute that began over seat arrangements.

In 2013, an official who missed two flights lost his temper at the boarding counter and went on a rampage, violently destroying two computers and attempting to smash a window with a signboard. China Daily/Asia News Network

TOURISM

THE TOURISM Authority of Thailand is planning a “Tourism Response Fund” to defend the industry from political unrest and other crises, TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said yesterday.

The agency is at the final stage of a study on the plan and hopes to launch the fund this year.

“The sector needs to have a special financial-assistance unit in order to help build the country’s image, deal with crises, and assist tourists on a large scale in case of big problems. Tourists visiting the Kingdom during or after a crisis will be covered with a safety package, including during periods of martial law,” Yuthasak said.

TAT will ask the government for a budget of Bt200 million to run the fund in the first year.

Earlier, TAT established a Tourist Assistance Centre to help foreign tourists, mostly individuals on a case-by-case basis, when they suffered serious injuries or were killed. The unit also facilitated other minor requirements such as translations, medical services, and complaints.

The Tourist Assistance Centre has been transferred to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Yuthasak said TAT would continue to promote Thailand as a quality leisure destination and increase the proportion of high-spending tourists from the current 40 per cent of total arrivals to 60 per cent.

Targeted “quality tourists” are from the Middle East including Oman and Iran, Russia, China, and Japan.

This year, TAT will open two offices overseas, one in the Canadian city of Toronto and possibly one in Brazil. It is also considering opening more domestic offices, bringing the number to 40 this year.

Furthermore, cross-border tourism will be in focus. TAT will urge airlines to operate more routes in cities throughout Asean in a bid to boost intra-region travel.

TAT targets 30 million arrivals this year and total tourism revenue of Bt2.4 trillion.

Authorities alerted as Chinese investors cash in on tourism

Chinese investors are putting more money into Chiang Mai, focusing on apartments and hostels to serve the rising numbers of Chinese tourists visiting the province.

Last year, Chinese tourists spent as much as Bt20 billion in Chiang Mai. This has encouraged Chinese investors to get more involved in the tourism business in the province, Chiang Mai Tourism Business Association president Pornchai Jitnavasathien said.

He said the Chinese were investing in long-term leasing of apartments and hostels that are converted into daily accommodations for the rising numbers of Chinese tour groups visiting Chiang Mai. They operate without permits and are located outside the typical hotel and shopping zones popular with foreign tourists, and are managed solely by Chinese staff.

Moreover, the Chinese currency is accepted for the convenience of visitors who are tricked into buying overpriced tour packages by Chinese tour agencies. This type of business is referred to by the media as “zero-dollar” tours.

According to the Chiang Mai Tourism Business Association, there are currently 12 locations where Chinese investors lease apartments or hostels to accommodate Chinese tourists. Three of them inChiang Mai‘s Muang district are believed to be operating illegally without permits.

Authorities are in the process of checking their documents and financial transactions and will take legal action if justified to set a precedent to deter other Chinese investors who are keen to tap this type of business opportunity in Chiang Mai.

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has met with local tourism business operators to brief them about the potential adverse impacts of Chinese-operated “zero dollar” schemes on traditional culture-oriented tourism in Chiang Mai. Locals must stay on the alert and inform authorities if they come across such illegal Chinese business activities in their communities.

Illegal tour guide woes tackled

The number of illegal tour guides, which was a big problem a few years ago, has declined after theChiang Mai Tourism Business Association, the Rak Lanna Guides Association and legitimate tourism businesses worked together to tackle the problem seriously. However, some Chinese exchange students still moonlight as guides for Chinese tourists to earn extra money.

Pornchai said that even though Chinese investors had yet to engage in the restaurant business, authorities were closely monitoring the 1,000 local restaurants that have added Chinese signs, menus, and so forth to accommodate Chinese tour groups, as this could encourage Chinese investors to tap into this lucrative business opportunity in the future. The authorities must keep an eye on such activities before they become widespread and difficult to tackle.

Last year, about a million Chinese tourists came to Chiang Mai, and the money they put into circulation was estimated at around Bt10 billion, or even double that. It is projected that the number of Chinese tourists this year will grow by 7-9 per cent, with tour groups accounting for 60 per cent. However, the number of individual Chinese visiting Thailand is expected to rise in the near future as many younger Chinese who can speak some English prefer not to use the services of Chinese tour agencies.

In the past few years, Chinese tourists have seemed to take an interest in visiting property-development projects, such as condominiums. Some Chinese investors bought condos that were converted into daily accommodations for the huge influx of Chinese tourists to earn income from their assets, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand Region 1 (upper North).

Representatives from the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand, the Tourism Council of Thailand, the DSI, Tourism Police and the Office of Business Registration are to set up a committee to investigate this situation. Their targeted provinces are Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Pattaya and Krabi.
