Details of the trips involving 107 students and teachers were listed on the Anti-Corruption Organisation of Thailand’s “Watchdog Act” project’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Watchdog.ACT/).

The three 13-day trips followed separate routes across Europe. On Tuesday, the page posted about a trip to England, Wales, Scotland and Germany from March 5-18, 2016 including 33 participants. Another trip’s details posted on Wednesday described a visit to Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden from March 4-17, 2016 with 36 participants. Details about the last trip to Germany, Italy and Switzerland including 38 participants from March 5-18, 2016 were published on Thursday.

The probe led by General Sutthipan Krisanakup, deputy chief of the Armed Forces, will take up to 10 days to complete, Surapong said on Thursday.

Bangkok deputy governor Jakkapan Pew-ngam noted that the campaign, which has been held in Thailand since 2008, helped ACBangkok reduce electricity consumption last year by 2,020 megawatts, equivalent to a reduction of 1,057 tons of carbon monoxide and worth Bt8.03 million.

The campaign will be joined by 7,000 cities in 187 countries worldwide, the deputy governor said. The target this year is to reduce the use of electricity in Bangkok by up to 2,000 megawatts.

The campaign is supported by Foundation for Environmental Education for Sustainable Development (Thailand), the World Wide Fund for Thailand as well as other organisations and government agencies.

The campaign also encourages the turning off of lights on such main roads as Silom, Ratchadaphisek, Khao San, Yaowarat and New Phetchaburi.

The city authorities also urged other provinces including Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Rayong, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani, Si Sa Ket, Chiang Mai and Phuket to join in the campaign on that day.

Cooperation for the campaign has increased over the years judging by the numbers of organisations willing to join, Chakkapan said. In 2008, only 35 organisations took part in the campaign. This year the number has increased to 116.

Throughout the nine years since the campaign started, power consumption in Bangkok has reduced 14,344 megawatts or by Bt49.01 million and 72,171 tons of carbon monoxide, he added.

Eleven state agencies on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on welfare registration and the screening of eligible persons.

“We estimate as many as 15 million people this year will enroll to get welfare due to the wider coverage of registration channels,” said Somchai Sujjapongse, permanent secretary for the Finance Ministry.

The registration will take place between April 3 and May 15, and anyone can submit a registration form via any of five channels – nationwide branches of the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives(BAAC), the Government Savings Bank, Krung Thai Bank, provincial Comptroller General Offices and Bangkok district offices.

Apirom Sukprasert, senior executive vice president of the BAAC, said his bank would also facilitate the registration at local government offices nationwide.

“About 9 million farmers are expected to register with the BAAC,” said Apirom.

People can also download registration forms from http://www.mof.go.th, http://www.fpo.go.th and http://www.epayment.go.th starting immediately.

“Eligible person for welfare this year will get discounts on bills for tap water, electricity, bus and train tickets, as well as Bangkok ‘s mass transit and train tickets,” Somchai said.

Eligible people must demonstrate that they are low-income earners with annual income last year not exceeding Bt100,000, financial assets of not more than Bt 100,000, and condominium units not exceeding 35 square metres or housing areas not larger than 25 square wa (100 quare metres). They must also be at least 18 years old.

Nation TV in collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors and the CP Group held the launch event at the King Rama VI statue in Bangkok’s Lumpini Park.

Celebrating its fourth year, the event is aimed at promoting exercise, good health through cycling, tourism and protecting the environment.

Twelve provinces will be hosting the event throughout the year from March to December. The next destination is Bang Khun Thian on March 26.

Hundreds of police officers, led by the Satun Provincial Internal Security Operations Command, marched into Ban Pakbang School on Thursday morning to tell some 300 protesters to leave the school so the forum could proceed.

However, the operation ended in a tense situation and there was minor clash between both sides.

By early Thursday afternoon, the protesting groups had not budged and were still being monitor by police.

Satun Provincial Internal Security Operations Command head Maj-General Jetthapat Sriwong said authorities were neutral in the matter and asked the Marine Department, the project owner, and protesters to hold a meeting between 10 representatives from each side to find a solution to the conflict and discuss staging the public hearing.

But protest leader Somboon Khamhang said protesters did not accept authorities’ terms and wanted everyone to withdraw from the area to prevent more clashes and discuss the matter later.

Also present at the school were people who said they wanted to attend the forum and had gathered with police outside the school.

DCD chief Dr Jessada Chokdamrongsuk predicted there would be between 150 and 400 heatstroke patients a month this summer – with the number peaking in April and May.

It was predicted that Thailand’s temperature might soar as high as 43 degrees Celsius over the next week.

Heatstroke risks are highest among people who carry out activities under the sun for a long time, such as farmers, soldiers and athletes.

Younger children, the elderly, people with chronic illness such as hypertension and obesity, people suffering sleep deprivation, and heavy drinkers were also at higher risk.

Symptoms include exhaustion, light-headedness, fainting, a high body temperature with a lack of sweat, nausea and vomiting, and a throbbing headache.

Thailand had between 2,500-3,000 cases of heatstroke per year from 2014-2016 with the patients’ average age 41.

According to the DCD, 21 people aged between 29 and 72 died from heatstroke between March 1 and April 17, 2016, and most died in public places.
