Doi Chaang looks to five-fold increase in franchised outlets

DOI CHAANG Coffee yesterday announced a five-year plan to increase by five times the number of its franchised coffee houses over the period.

The caf้ chain has been in the Thai coffee market for 15 years, expanding from a local enterprise in Chiang Rai province. The company opened its first coffee house in the northern province as a market experiment in 2004, before launching the first franchised branch in 2013 at Krabi International Airport.

Doi Chaang Coffee now operates 50 coffee houses under franchising, and a further 150 branches under a partnered licensing model. By 2022, the company plans to cover every province in Thailand with 300 franchised branches.

“We first started the franchise model to ensure the quality and the integrity of our coffee,” said Phitsanuchai Kaewphichai, a co-founder and business adviser at Doi Chaang Coffee.

“Now it is time to make sure that the quality coffee we produce reaches coffee drinkers everywhere.”

On its 15th anniversary, Phitsanuchai said the company plans to strengthen its status as a cafe franchise business by expanding the number of its franchised outlets from 50 now to 100 by the end of this year.

“As seen in today’s market, there are a lot of newcomers and this increases competition. However, when we look deeper into the market segment, we can see that there is still an untapped space for us as the only brand that produces, roasts, distributes, and franchises single-origin coffee,” said Phitsanuchai.

“While we consider Doi Chaang Coffee to be a premium brand in this niche field, we see the opportunity for growth as the consumer trend for coffee consumption is moving towards ‘interest in origin’ as people become more knowledgeable on coffee.”

Before 2013, Doi Chaang Coffee offered products ranging from green beans to roasted beans, under a licensed partnership. However, the company, wishing to control the premium quality of the product throughout the entire process, put in place a brand philosophy of “From Earth to Cup” and implemented the franchise model in its business strategy.

Doi Chaang Coffee is also the country’s leading coffee exporter, having accounted for US$3.6 million (Bt120 million) in overseas sales in 2015 and US$4.2 million in 2016. This success has spurred the company to plot further growth outside the country, with an existing roaster in Canada, franchise expansion and new roaster plant opportunities in Europe in the frame for Doi Chaang Coffee’s expansion.

“Our wish looking forward is to reach coffee drinkers in Thailand with the same quality that we are known for worldwide,” Phitsanuchai said, “We have been certified to international standards, including an SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) score of over 90. Such recognition is given only to coffee universally graded as specialty coffee, and we want people in our home country to taste our coffee and share in the pride and joy that we have been giving to the world.”

Doi Chaang Coffee’s franchise strategy highlights the importance of reaching consumers with a “1 cafe, 1 province” concept. This strategy envisages one large franchised branch in every province by 2022. For Bangkok and its surrounding areas, the brand plans to go for “new urban areas” – the newly developed real estate communities. Such a move would see it stay true to the brand’s target segment, the company says, as it reaches out to those who have embraced the coffee culture.

Banks bet on savings from Net services

THE NATION

THAI banks are betting on reaping the savings from the increased popularity of mobile banking, even as many of the major lenders begin waiving fees for transfers and bill payments on mobile and other Internet banking services, said Predee Daochai, chairman of the Thai Bankers’ Association.

However, Predee conceded that the industry faced many challenges due to the intensified competition among banks and non-bank financial operators. His comment came as the major banks start offering clients fee waivers on transactions such as transfers and bill payments when these are made with phone applications or on the computer. These banks include Siam Commercial bank, Kasikornbank, Bangkok Bank, Kiatnakin and Krung Thai Bank.

“Fee waivers will have some effect on banks’ profit, but we expected mobile and Internet banking will lower the overall cost,” said Predee, who is also president of Kasikornbank.

Kasikorn Research Centre projects that fee waivers will cost the banking system Bt9 billion in foregone revenue this year – figure dwarfed by the overall fee income of Bt190 billion in 2017.

The move will have little impact on the banks’ profits as they can generate more fee income from other services, according to the research house. Fee income collected on money transfers for the whole system is about Bt15 billion to Bt20 billion.

Consumers’ take-up of mobile and other Internet banking services will lower costs for the whole financial system as they do more transaction on their mobile devices and computers. This means less use of cash and less contact with bank branches.

Predee said that, within Internet-based services, mobile banking is expected to dominate the market as bank customers find it much more convenient, along with the cost savings, to make their transactions by phone. According to data from the Bank of Thailand, the number of transactions via mobile platforms jumped to almost one billion last year. With this growth, that level exceeded the number of transactions made by other forms of Internet banking, as well as by credit card and cheque.

Profit growth in the banking sector shrank 7.2 per cent to Bt174 billion, with fee revenue accounting for 20 per cent of this amount. Kasikorn Research Centre projects that fee revenue for the industry will grow by 2-3 per cent this year.

Among the issues for the industry, Predee said, is that the national e-payment system has cut into fee revenue, and this has resulted in the banks competing on the fee waivers.

The rapid changes in technology have also affected consumer behaviour. This has spurred intense competition among banks and the advances in technology have enable non-bank operators to compete in a reshaped financial services industry.

However, Predee said he was confident Thai banks would be able to compete and survive.

He recounted that with the 1997 financial crisis, many local financial institutions collapsed and foreign banks moved into the country. But, so far. large foreign banks have had limited success in doing business in Thailand. Moreover, the non-bank operators that have begun deploying financial technology to compete with the traditional banks could do better in only some areas, he said.

Lastly, a key challenge came in the form of new accounting standards imposed on the banks by regulators. This will cause bank to have higher financial reserves, and risk weighting on some assets will rise. Such an outcome would increase the cost of lending for some business, Predee said.

He said that bank lending for businesses is expected to grow 4.8 per cent this year, up from 4.6 per cent last year. Government investment in infrastructure projects will lead to more investment by the private sector, Predee said.

Retail lending is expected to ease to 5.5 per cent growth this year, compared with 6 per cent last year. High household debt would limit retail lending growth, Predee said. Household debt is estimated to be about 77-78 per cent of gross domestic product this year.

Foreign links enhance Myanmar transparency

YANGON

SOME OF Myanmar’s leading companies have improved in corporate governance and transparency, due largely to their cooperation with international firms, a report has found.

The report, by the Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business (MCRB), ranked First Myanmar Investment (FMI) Group, City Mart Holdings Ltd (CMHL), and Serge Pun & Associates as the top three performers among 182 large Myanmar companies that were assessed through their corporate websites, including listed and public enterprises. CMHL rose from eighth place in the last report to No 2 in terms of transparency this year. This year marks the fourth year of the report, known as Pwint Thit Sa.

Big players, such as Aya Bank, Max Myanmar, Shwe Taung, Grand Guardian Insurance, Dagon Group and Myanmar Thilawa SEZ Holdings, scored high marks. The report also noted that Myanmar Awba, Myanmar Citizens Bank, and First Private Bank significantly improved disclosure of corporate governance information compared with their efforts in the report for 2016.

“The leading companies from last year are still more or less the same as before. FMI should be congratulated for coming top for the third year running and demonstrating a high standard of corporate governance,” said MCRB director Vicky Bowman. “And companies like CMHL, Shwe Taung and AYA Bank should be recognised for their significant improvement.”

One striking statistic from this year’s report is that the average score for a company in which the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation has invested is 54 per cent, compared with an average of 7 per cent for the companies assessed. This indicates even greater transparency than that assessed for the five listed companies on Yangon Stock Exchange, which averaged 38 per cent, she said.

“This demonstrates that good corporate governance is what attracts investors and partners for companies. It also shows that IFC investment and the guidance that accompanies it make a real difference to how these companies run themselves,” she said.

Bowman said some public companies still have very poor disclosure records and an absence of corporate governance, resulting in an average score of only 4 per cent. Over one-third of the companies that were assessed still do not have corporate websites. The scoring was based on the Asean Corporate Governance Scorecard used in Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore.

Tun Tun, chief financial officer at FMI Group, said the firm was very satisfied with its top ranking. FMI is the first company to be listed on the Yangon Stock Exchange.

“We see it as our responsibility to raise the standards of corporate governance in Myanmar and we are honoured to be recognised for our efforts. Corporate integrity, transparency and accountability are our core principles,” he said. “Having been awarded the highest score for disclosure again is a testament to the hard work and dedication our team has put into setting up systems and processes to ensure good corporate governance.”

Myanmar Thilawa SEZ Holdings Public Limited climbed nearly 10 spots into ninth place. MTSH is the majority shareholder in Myanmar Japan Thilawa Development Ltd (MJTD), the developer of the Thilawa special economic zone.

Tomoyasu Shimizu, president of MJTD, said the study reaffirmed the firm’s professionalism and commitment to Myanmar.

“The corporate culture and aspiration of the Thilawa SEZ is to be a leader in sustainability, governance and honest two-way communication with our stakeholders. The report means we are all doing the right thing,” he said.

The report assessed more than twice the number of businesses since its last findings in 2016. The criteria for evaluation are good corporate governance, corporate culture, reporting, sustainability management and communication.

Logistics solution provider JWD InfoLogistics Plc has set aside an investment budget of Bt2.5 billion to finance new investments and expansion this year, aiming to drive its revenue growth by 10 per cent year-on-year, said Charvanin Bunditkitsada , chairman of the executive committee and CEO yesterday.

The company has reached an agreement to acquire shares in CSLF, a Taiwan-based food service firm that manufactures, imports and sells food products.

JWD posted Bt589 million in revenue and a Bt20.7 million in net profit in fiscal year 2017. It has set a growth target of 15 per cent this year and will acquire a 60 per cent equity stake, worth Bt160 million, in the Taiwanese firm.

Payments and transfer of the shares are expected to be completed in April 2018.

Amid the high growth potential of the regional logistics market, the company will enter two new markets in the region this year – in addition to Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Thailand.

As for the growing food and cold storage segment, it seeks to build one additional cold storage plant in Vietnam in the second quarter of this year.

It plans to expand its investments in Jakarta and Surabaya in Indonesia , after partnering with Indonesian shipping line Samudera Group in setting up a joint venture firm to acquire a 67 per cent stake in Adib Cold Logistics (or ACL), a Jakarta-based cold storage and cargo transport company, Charvanin said.

Jetts, one of Australia’s most successful gym chains, has launched in Asia with four clubs in Bangkok, offering 24/7 operations and no-lock-in contracts.

Founded in Australia a decade ago, Jetts offers Thailand members free reciprocal access to its 250 clubs there and in New Zealand, Britain and the Netherlands.

The move is backed by the Fitness and Lifestyle Group (FLG), Australia’s largest gym-and-fitness company, which has more than 450 clubs, 725,000 members and 6,000 team members.

FLG chief executive Greg Oliver said he was confident the “workout on your terms” mantra that Jetts uses will spark a “fitness revolution” in Thailand, with a further eight clubs to be opened later this year and eventually 35 more upcountry.

“As with the global health and fitness sector, Thailand is experiencing a surge and Jetts will tick all the boxes for health-conscious consumers who demand a gym that is simple, affordable and fits into their busy lifestyles,” Oliver said.

Jetts Asia managing director Michael David Lamb is confident the simple convenience and member-centric approach that has made Jetts an international success would be warmly welcomed in Thailand.

“Jetts will ultimately inspire more people to live a healthier life by making it easy and affordable for them to get moving, just as it has in Australia for more than a decade,” he said.

“By making the clubs accessible 24/7 by use of a swipe card, everyone from shift workers to busy parents will be able to work out at a time that fits into their busy schedules.”
